Reconnecting Offline Media to Previous Project

I have been reading the previous threads concerning the subject of 'Media Offline', but have not quite found the answer to my particular problem.  If I have missed such a thread, please point me to it.  Thanks much.
I began editing a project in CS4.  I should point out that all of the originally digitized HDV (to .avi files) footage is the same, orignally digitized footage.  I was forced to continue editing this project on a completely different computer (both were PC's).
I imported the original CS4 .prproj file into CS5.  As expected, all of my Timeline 'Sequences' as well as all of my sublips organized into numerous bins in my 'Project Panel' also showed 'Media Offline' when I tried to open them in my 'Source Panel.'  This was before I re-imported all of the original .avi files (the raw whole tape files) into this newly created CS5 project.
I then re-imported all of the aforementioned originally digitized .avi files to my D: drive.  I then created a new bin in my 'Project Panel' and imported those .avi files into my CS5 project.  I assumed this was the method for re-connecting the original raw files to the old project pointers. The newly created 'Peak Files' were kept in a folder also on my D: drive.  But after re-importing all of the original digitized files, I am still getting 'Media Offline' both on my Timeline edited 'Sequences' as well as any sublcip file in the bins of my 'Project Panel.'
Is there a step I am overlooking?  Is there a re-connection process I am missing?  Shouldn't I be able to take a CS4 .prproj file and open it up in CS5 and continue editing it there with the original source asset files?  Or am I going to have to go through all of my original footage again and create new subclips and 'Project Panel' bins?
I should also point out that the raw .avi tape files play fine in my 'Source Panel.'  It's just that none of my Timeline 'Sequences' or 'Project Panel' subclips will connect.  Of course, I could just start over and go through all the tapes and reorganize.  But that will take me two to three weeks.
I am running CS5 5.0.2; Windows 7 Pro x64; 12GB of RAM, nvidia GTX-470.
Finally, I should mention that I do also have all of the original tape files in .mpeg format residing on the same D: drive, although in a different folder if that makes any difference?
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.
Tom

I have done this with several projects recently (CS4 projects opened in CS5) and although they are DV not HDV, I don't think you are doing this right.  I copied the whole CS4 project with directories to the new machine.  In my case, the captured files are in a subdirectory.  I opened the CS4 project file and CS5 prompts to rename.  The files are right where there were before, so no relinking is even needed.  In some instances where assets were not, ordinarily relinking worked.
I imported the original CS4 .prproj file into CS5.
I did not import into; I opened the CS4 project with CS5.

  • Reconnecting offline media issues after moving files

Hi I am having a bit of a headache with offline media files in final cut. Our data requirements have recently outgrown the internal drives on our mac pro so we have switched to keeping all of our footage/projects etc on an external network raid (freenas). After moving all the footage over to the new drive final cut understandably asks to reconnect media so I point it in the direction of the new location and click search.... It searches through but finds nothing so I hit locate and manually point it to one of the offline files. It finds maybe 2or3 (out of over 2500) of the files then asks to locate more and so on. I spent an afternoon reconnecting all the offline media and all was fine until today when half the files showed as offline as final cut decided to start looking for them in their old location and not the new location I specified previously so I had to spend hours reconnecting them manually a few at a time again.
I'm worried that I would needto make a quick change to the edit and when I open a project final cut has a tantrum and says stuff is offline then won't let me quickly reconnect everything at once, instead making me do it one or two clips at a time
Does anyone know why it's doing this and what I need to do to make it stop???
    Many thanks in advance!

I hate to say 'you built this house' but you might have.  Although FCP's media manager has been crap since it came into being in v2... it still is the best way to move media around.  BUT - THAT said, if you at least kept the CAPTURE SCRATCH folders intact it shouldn't have been that much of a problem to get stuff loaded back in.
I'd say... keep plugging away, bit by bit.
    Good luck,
    CaptM

  • Newbie- How to reconnect "Offline Media" in CS3?

I've been using Premiere for a while (successfully), but always by importing existing QT movies (that I have created using QT pro) No problems at all.
A bit more detail: I'm an animator, so in the past I have been assembling the original frames of my shots (created one at a time) in QT Pro into QT movies...then bringing those into Premiere.
But recently I've imported live action footage from a dv cam, through the Capture window. No problem, the importing worked great, and in the bin it displayed all clips as ".mov" files...
I did some cleaning up of my computer today and although I know Premiere is very fussy about where you store your files, I didn't think I'd done anything serious. But when I opened Premiere for the first time after cleaning up my computer, I'm informed it can't find all of the ".mov" files.
I "Skip All" (just to see the damage to my timeline) and when the project opens, my timeline reads that all the clips are "Media Offline".
How do I reconnect? Or do I have to re-capture? It's not a long piece but still- this seems like a horrible thing to just happen... I need to protect myself for when I've got longer timelines... even this short one represents hours of work...
Do these offline .mov files actually exist somewhere?  If they DO exist, how do I reconnect? Where are they? I've looked through all the obvious Premiere folders I can find, and there's no files to reconnect to...
Finally- how do I avoid this nonsense in the future?! Should I be using Capture in a different way? All I was doing was opening the Capture window, controling the dv camera via the window's controlls, marking in and out points, then capturing... then the .mov would show up in the bin.
Please help, I'd really like to get this little project back in action...
    Thank you very much,
    Chris.

    Chris,
I strongly recommend this site: PrPro-Wiki. Look both in the FAQ and the Tutorials sections. Yes, most will reference things being done on a PC, but with the exception of substituting Command Key for Ctrl, and a name, or two being different, things are covered very well.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Old FCP file unexpectedly quitting when trying to reconnect offline media

An old project that I transfered from one computer to my new mac pro is not working.
When I open the FCP file it asks me to choose a scaling quality. Either: Normal, Fastest, or best. I have tried all three (with the same result.)
Next it says 152 media files are offline and 28 render files are offline. I kept all these files in the same folder when I transfered the project to my new computer, so I thought I would simply reconnect them. I click "reconnect," search for the first file, find it, and click it. As soon as I click the name of the file, not "choose," just the name of the media file, FCP unexpectedly quits. I click report and send the automatic message to Apple. It is really long, but if you want I can post that message. If any one has any ideas or could offer some help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot for your time!
    Peace,
    Andrew

Let me know if this isn't right or if you want the first part, or what follows this. Thanks a lot!

  • FCP won't reconnect offline media

OK, I've read several pages, but can't find anyone with the same problem.
for no apparent reason FCP made all my freshly captured clips offline. (We did have a power outage, but that's all I can think of that might have done anything.) I did not move or rename any files. Just opened up FCP and they were ALL offline. All of them have the correct reel number.
Tried to reconnect, but got the message that there was "not proper content" to reconnect...
So, I moved the files to trash, and manually recaptured. Now about half of them again say they are offline, and FCP refuses to accept them when I try to reconnect. This time, it is just the audio file that is offline.
I remember this happening once before, but not to this extent.
I tried trashing the FCP thumbnail cache as well.
I tried renaming the files with .mov as well.
Am I trying to operate FCP on a Mac that is too slow or something like that? I've been using this version of FCP for a long time. Just using a different computer. And I'm stuck with this iMac.

Has the media itself corrupted? If so then you should treat yourself to the "FCS Maintenance Pack" .. there's nothing else like it out there for Final Cut Studio users :
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsmaintenance/
Amongst its many tools you'll find a QuickTime Repair tool, and in a worse case scenario, a Media Salvage tool
If the media is ok then you should treat yourself to "FcpReconnect" ... yet another must have tool for every working FCP editor :

  • CS3: Offline Media in Trimmed Project

Typically, I do a rough cut and then take it over to my editor and have him finish it.
When I took the project to him...most of the files were offline; he manually reconnected some and Premiere seemed to "figure out" where the files were and they were all connected.
Now I want to edit the project a bit more. I have a trimmed project from my editor and most of the files are offline. (Lower thirds and titles on online.) Is there a trick I am overlooking? They relink when relinked manually, but I don't want to do that for each clip...
    Have done a forum search.

Make sure that the drive letters are fixed. So Z on one PC has to be Z as well on the other PC. You can set that up in Disk Manager.

If the clips are not actually missing, you could try to refresh the timeline by using cmd-0 and then going to the timeline options tab. Then select name only where it says "thumbnail display". Press ok to accept the change, then repeat the process to add thumbnails back to your timeline.

  • Reconnecting media for entire project

I have had to clean up a very messy project by moving all the media to new drives with one Capture Scratch folder on each. I'm wondering if there is a particular way the media should be reconnected.
Would I start reconnecting the media from bins of clips? Or reconnect the media from sequences? Or would I simply highlight everything in my browser and then start reconnecting media.
Thanks in advance. This has been a crazy process and prompt responses from other users has really helped. Again, I hope we can all make it clear to Apple that they should push fixing their media management to the top of their priority list. I make this clear on every tech support call.
    Loch

If there is the possibility of media corruption (or sequence corruption, for that matter), reconnecting from your main sequence might be beneficial.
In the past, I've discovered clips (stills, usually) that have gone wonky on me by reconnecting one-by-one from a sequence.
If there is no question of media corruption (it's simply that the project is too bloated, for instance) then you can probably make do with connecting from your bins.

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
If you opened a previously saved closed project and were greeted by a colorful media offline display and "Where is the file.....?" messages, there are at least two possibilities.
    1. You have move, deleted, or renamed files and folders that you imported into the project after you saved closed the project.
When you import media into the the project, all you get in the project are copies of the originals which are at a hard drive save location. However, the project needs to
trace back to those originals at the location where they were when you first imported them into the project. You can use the "Where is the file....?" messages to reconnect
your source media to the project. Can be time consuming and a nuisance.
    2. If you stored the project's source media on an external hard drive and that drive changed drive letter for some reason, this would create a media disconnect situation.
Correct the drive situation if this applies to you.
Please review and consider and supply more details. We can discuss this and other related matters (such as use of the Project Archiver) depending on your details.
    Thank you.

  • How do I find the "Offline Media" or otherwise fix this?

When I try to encode a particular 30 minute timeline (I have successfully encoded other shorter timelines for Blu-ray before, in between, and after getting errors on this timeline)  I get this error message - "Offline material is present in this export and will be encoded using the Offline Media graphic". I have spent hours going through the timeline frame by frame and cannot find any "offline material." As far as I can tell nothing is offline.
Presumably, Premiere Pro "knows" what is offline. Is there any way to get Premiere Pro to indicate to me WHAT it "believes" is offline and WHERE on the timeline it believes that material is?
Yesterday, even though this error appeared, I successfully encoded this timeline for DVD. It encoded fine and a frame by frame examination of the encoded video by two people did not find any sign of "the Offline Media graphic" or any sound problem.
I decided the error message was itself an error and have spent nearly all day yesterday and today trying to encode the timeline for Blu-Ray. I have tried the unmodified AME presets "H.264 Blu-ray" and "MPEG2 Blu-ray". Both generate the same error message -- "Error compiling file. Unknown error."
I have tried to EXPORT it directly from Premiere Pro and from an AME QUEUE. The result are exactly the same either way.
The encode appears to proceed normally, but after about
I am working on a 2 x 2.4 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon MAC running with a OSx (10.8.5) with 28 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 RAM. It has an nVidia graphics card, but at the moment I can't get this box to show me which one, so I will send this message now and update that bit of info if someone requires it.

WELL... that was weird. Thank you all for your advise, but it seems I was mislead by Premiere Pro, so I must apologize for unintentionally misleading you.
I STILL get the error message - "Offline material is present in this export and will be encoded using the Offline Media graphic".
And after following the advice I got from Michael MTT and checking every single one of the dozen of offline clips in the project... I know absolutely that there is not a single offline clip in the timeline I'm working on and that the error message is indeed a mistake by Premiere Pro.
But the solution to the "Error compiling file. Unknown error." message turned out to be truly weird. It was generated by a corrupted video effect (color correction) on a 2 second clip.
As I mentioned, I also work on an Avid system and when a timeline on the Avid has this sort of problem I do a "video mixdown" which PP calls "nesting". Based on the success of that procedure I decided to try nesting all the video tracks in this troublesome PP timeline. That turned the render line above of the timeline entirely RED. So I did a RENDER ALL (is that what it's called?) and about a quarter of the way through the timeline, up popped "Error compiling file. Unknown error."  The rendered line was green up to a point and then red. Finally, I had a place to look and what I discovered when I did was that when I played through that part of the timeline it was holding the previous graphic as a still through the clip with the corrupted effect on it, but the criminal clip was not being played. I dug around, found the corrupted effect, which was the third of three identical color corrections applied to that clip. I deleted it and POP the everything displayed and rendered and encoded perfectly.
    Thanks again all.

  • Mapping to offline media

I copied a project from one computer to another.   All the media is contained is several subdirectories under a main project directory.  When the project is opened on the new computer all the media appears under Project Assets, but it is all offline.   When the project is first opened it prompts for the location of the first image in the timeline.   However, there are about 300 images in the video, so would like to avoid mapping to them individually if possible.   Is there a command that will search for and map all the media in its new location?

    Joe,
    Welcome to the forum.
ATR has given you some viable options.
The PrE Project file (PREL), uses absolute Paths to link to the media in the Project. If any part of that absolute Path is changed, or missing, then PrE cannot follow those links. When you moved things to the second computer, it is very likely that the absolute Paths were broken, and most likely as drive letters changed.
One can duplicate the folder scheme in the second computer, if it has a drive letter available, that matches that on the first computer. As an example, if the media was on the D:\ on the first computer, but now are on the C:\ of the second computer, Moving those media files, in their exact folder structure to D:\, would likely solve the issue. If this is not a possibility, then I recommend letting PrE do the relinking. It will do this, for all media assets in each folder, once the first one has been located. This will need to be repeated for each media asset folder, but otherwise is automatic for ALL used media assets in THAT folder. This article on "Where is File ___ ?" goes into more detail: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4598705#4598705 Also see this article on Media Offline: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3561281#3561281
I often migrate Projects between computers, and for that task, I use external FW-800 (IEEE-1394b) HDD's. I first set the drive letter of each of those external HDD's to be the exact same, in the OS of every computer, that will work on that Project. Then, when I Import my media, usually Copies of the files, in each folder, into the Project, the absolute Path to that media is the same, including the drive letter. This article goes into more detail on using external HDD's: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4542396#4542396 This setup would only be useful to you, at the very beginning of a Project, and not once media assets have been Imported into the Project from a previous absolute Path. Also, this article on Folder Setup might be useful for the next Project: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4028231#4028231
I think that the easiest method to get your Project easily from one computer, to another, would be ATR's recommendation to go back to the Project on the first computer, and use the Project Archiver, to Copy that Project and all media assets, to an external HDD (remember to set its drive letter in the OS of both computers, before you start). Then, the links via the absolute Paths will be the same, and you should not get any Media Offline, or the "Where is file ____ ?"
Good luck, and please report your progress,
    Hunt

  • PP CS4 won't relink offline media

Can anyone help me trouble shoot my Premiere Pro CS4? It would refuse to let me save anything, freeze and make me force quit it over and over, finally it told me to reinstall. So i did but now none of my previous timelines work, the media is all either offline or just not playing when i try to playback. When i try to relink the offline media it tells me the file dimensions are too big. What can i do? This is a big project which needs to be completed urgently and i don't want to have to start over losing weeks of work.
I'm using a macbook pro and an education version of the adobe masters collection.

Hi all, thanks for your help but neither of those solutions are working. I have found an autosave in which most of the media is still linked but not all of them and I am still being told that the file dimensions are too large to link, despite being from tapes i captured using premiere pro. While all clips are in the same place as where i edited them, the ones that appear to still be linked are blank and will not play.

Jeff covers two of the biggest reasons that Media is Offline, and why one might not be able to relink to the media. This ARTICLE goes into detail on a few other reasons. The biggest question, and also at least part of the solution, is "why is the media offline?" One of the main causes is that something changed in the Path to the media, which is absolute. Then, when PrPro cannot find that media, it asks "Where is file ____ ?" and the user chooses anything but the Finder to locate that media, then Saves the Project. All media with changed Paths will then show as Offline. However, manually relinking will correct that. In your case, you are failing in that relink operation, so Jeff's suggestions take on even greater importance. Still, by defining WHY the media is showing offline, might be useful in determining how to relink. Good luck, Hunt

  • Reconnect offline clips

I used the tagging of PSE5 to tag my video clips (same as photos). I also used the move/copy method to store the material (avi files) offline on to DVD's. Due to a glitch in the PSE6 ability to recognize offline files from PSE5 I am bringing all my material back online to external hard drives. Everything has gone fine. I've just about filled up my first 750GB hard drive from the offline material.
My issue at this point is I have hit some DVD's that the Move option under File dropdown in PSE5 doesn't recognize the DVD's I put in. This may be a DVD cataloging issue. My computer can see the files in the DVD, so there is no problem for the computer to deal with the files. It is just that PSE5 can't see the files for restoring them to an online location. I'm looking for suggestions on alternatives to bring this material on line and still retain the tags I have for them and have PSE5 recognize they are online.
    TIA,

    Apple Discussion- reconnecting offline clips
    Hi Tom
I have all the media connected except the voiceover. I even find the voiceover clips and I drag them into the browser then I try to reconnect them without luck. I can manually drag one at a time from the browser to the time line to replace those off lines, so I just have to work around it. The reason why I move them around at the first place? Because I need the space in my internal drives for a new project, therefore I want to save the project (including the medias) in my external drive for future editing. Apparently, I am not smart enough to handle it.
    Thank you

  • Sharing media between two project files

If I have all the media in one project file, and the current sequence in another, shouldn't any changes I make to the media be reflected in both projects? Jpeg files in the media project were re-named and replaced with uprezed versions. The files in the sequence project did not change to match this - they still have their original file names, and were linked to the old files. They are still connected, as I made a copy of the media before I renamed the files. So now each project is referencing different media. Is there a way to resolve this? The only thing I can think of is to go through the timeline and replace the files one by one.
Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
(I know, I know . . . files shouldn't be renamed! I made a mistake last week - I'm already wearing the cone of shame.)

    Oops ...
The resolution is to "reconnect" the timeline instances with the new masterclip source media
Select all the offline media in the timeline, then choose File menu > Reconnect Media...
And in the Reconnect dialog press the "Locate" button, then navigate to and select the new file ... if you had/have kept the file names the same then leave "Matched Name and Reel Only" checked and let the app identify and reconnect all those offline files in the same relative path ... but if you have different names for the new source files uncheck the "Matched Name and Reel Only" option and sit yourself down for a long session of manually finding and attaching media

  • Office365(Click to Run) Deployment with MDT Offline Media

    Hi,
I have a scenario where i have to deploy Office365 using click to run with MDT offline media. Now the problem is with configuration.xml file in which we specify the source path of office files.
Here in this scenario as i have to deploy client machines with offline media, so in this case what will be the path in the config.xml file?
For testing purpose, after downloading the office source files, placed the setup.exe,config.xml file and office source folder in a same folder. Here is the config.xml file that i am using
    <Configuration>
    <Add SourcePath=" " OfficeClientEdition="32" >
        <Product ID="O365ProPlusRetail">
          <Language ID="en-us" />
        </Product>
      </Add>
    </Configuration>
In source path, i leave it blank,so that it will use the office source files which was saved in the same folder.
Then in MDT server, created a new application for Office365.In command line used the command :- setup.exe /config configuration.xml
Created a new task sequence for OS deployment and added the step install application for installation of Office365.
After creating a selection profile for the deployment, created a offline media for deployment of client machine.
Now while i am running the offline media on the bare-metal machine, after OS installation the deployment got stuck at step install Office 365. Got error message pop up, according to which internet connection needed during installation process so that the
click to run set-up will download the office source files, It means this will not use the previously downloaded file which was saved in the same folder.
So this is what my problem is.. How can i customize the configuration.xml file so that i can install office 365 with offline media.
    Regards
    Pallavi

    <Add SourcePath=" "
....In source path, i leave it blank,so that it will use the office source files which was saved in the same folder.
    As per
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219426.aspx#BKMK_AddElement
SourcePath indicates the installation source path from which to install Office when you run the Office Deployment Tool in
configure mode. If you don’t specify SourcePath in
configure mode, Setup will look in the current folder for the Office source files. If the Office source files aren’t found in the current folder, Setup will look on Office 365 for them
So, for the /configure mode, you should remove the Sourcepath element completely - do not specify as <space>
