Reconnecting to Previous Wireless after hardrive&Software install

My old Pismo hardrive tanked and have installed a new hardrive, Mac OS9.2 as a base with 10.2.8 installed also. I am only concerned with X.2.8.
This mac WAS on the network I'm trying to re-establish to. The only change is the Mac.
I have one WinPC (XP'03) Laptop connected wireless and 1 Win PC (XP '03) Eithernet wired to a Belkin router. They are working fine (thus this post!)
When I reinstalled the system software yesterday at my brother's home (He has an offical Airport base), my Pismo detected the network and I was "on" immediately. However, this morning, I've been unable to get my mac on MY network described above. My Pismo is sitting about 10 inches from my PC laptop, so I'm sure signal strength is not a problem.
I've been trolling all morning on multiple sites and multiple forums, etc. for answers and can't seem to get an easy fix. So I'm posting whats probably been answered before. Your forgiveness please.
As far as I can tell my Mac is NOT detecting ANY signal from the wireless router.
G3 Pismo Mac OS X (10.2.x) Pismo WAS on this network before

G3 Pismo Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I'm not getting any replies to this post.
A couple questions.
1) Is this in the wrong area? I'm not sure where else to post it.
2) When I look at the question without loggin in, there is a box at the top that says:
"This question is not answered. "Helpful" answers available: 2. "Solved" answers available: 1."
I'm confused. Does that mean there are answers somewhere that I cannot see? I cannot click on these links and once I log in to edit/reply, those links go away.
3) ANY tips on how to get this resolved?

  • Desktop files etc. won't open after botched software install

    Dear New Best Friends:
    (a) My new mac mini is just up and running since yesterday. I'm not new to Mac but AM new to setting up, installing, etc., and to being the one responsible. (My brother-in-law used to do everything for me, but he moved, the heartless you-know-what.) Anyway, after a few false starts, a "mini" nervous breakdown and one complete reinstall, things were humming. I was so happy with the Mini -- and, I admit it, with myself. But pride goeth before a (downloading) fall...
    (b) Since I successfully installed an old copy of MS Office 2001 (after installing OS 9), I decided I could be trusted to install a old copy of Photoshop 5.0 (used previously on my G3/OS 9.2). The disc icon appeared on the desktop, but nothing happened when I clicked it. So, freaking idiot that I am, I remembered recently reading about the "drag to the hard-drive" Mac method of installation...
    (c) I dragged it, alright, and it disappeared into that cute little hard-drive icon... and, just like that, i-life as I knew it was over. (Remember when Kevin Bacon flips that fateful switch on board Apollo 13? Everything had been going so well...) Now, none of the desktop icons -- the hard-drive, the printer, various Word files and folders -- will open. (They highlight with one click but don't do anything with 2 clicks.) I can't seem to get into them any other way, either, but again, I'm new to OS X, and to being the one in charge. SO, I have no access to MS Office, or to my Word documents or to numerous folders of art and photos.
    (d) I've searched as best I know how through these Discussions for a similar problem but have had no luck. I've never posted to a forum in my life, but I've admired you all from afar. (I figured out what display to buy from reading here.) I hope I am posting this right; I don't really know how this topic/thread stuff works. (Be gentle on me -- and educate me --if I'm in the wrong place.)
And finally, MY QUESTION: Can my downloading error be reversed?
Thanks so much in advance (you deserve much more just for reading this). Peace and love!

It's happened again. Desktop icon freeze.
Add to that frustration the fact that I just described the chain of events in long detail, and when I posted it earlier this morning, I got an Apple Discussions alert that they're, oh, doing some housework or something, and anyway, the posting got lost and only my computer info was transmitted (which was no longer accurate, because I did NOT reinstall Classic OS 9 after performing a complete erase and install Sunday.....)
So let me start over, outliningg this depressing chain of events:
After successful OS X reinstall mentioned in previous post, I:
    --Re-installed AOL, setting aol preferences
--Responded to iTunes prompt to download newest version; downloaded and left icon on desktop for later install
--Did first Apple Software Update check (remember, have only had this Mini a few days); it told me I needed about ten or eleven updates. I selected eight of them, notably OS X. Figured that getting the latest stuff would, you know, eliminate the glitch that caused first meltdown. Ha. (Downloading of the 8 selected updates took --get ready-- eleven hours and 49 minutes; I use AOL dial-up. In those hours, my internet loading was very slow on both aol and safari, but I figured that was because of downloading going on.)
--Opened desktop Hard Drive icon numerous times throughout day to set preferences, look around apps, and read cute little tutorials about how fun it is to use the Mini .
--Created first Text document; placed icon on desktop.
--Twelve-hour download extravaganza finally ended. Expected to have to install stuff, but I gather it does that automatically in these Apple software updates?
--Noticed that even though downloading was complete, internet loading was still slow; hmmmm; figured AOL was having one of its numerous bad days.
--Double-clicked the iTunes installer desktop icon mentioned above, and installed the newest version.
--May have re-calibrated my display afterwards, or may have been just before. (It's a new Dell 1704 FPT, if that makes any difference. Maybe Michael Dell is sabotaging Steve J.)
--Put Mini to sleep; he and I had had a hard couple of days...
--Put myself to sleep; dreamed of Fun Mini Days Just Ahead.
--Woke up this morning like it was Christmas, excited to begin new and improved life with Mini. Woke Mini. Double-clicked Hard Drive icon. NOTHING. Double-clicked Text icon. Nothing. Same problem. Different day. (Only this time, it IS a weekday, per previous posts...)
--Got online, went to Discussions, read AndyO's recommendation about Finder, File, find p.list, trash it, etc. Did so.
--Double-clicked Text document icon. IT OPENED. Wow! Wanted to buy AndyO a NanO.
--Double-clicked Hard Drive icon. NOTHING. Gulp.
--Closed Text document. Double-clicked Hard Drive icon again. Nothing.
--Double-clicked Text icon. This time, Nothing.
    --Re-performed p.list steps. Didn't work this time.....
Please note major differences between this freeze and the last:
    (1) Classic OS 9 wasn't installed this time. (So neither was MS Office 2001, of course, nor any old software.)
    (2) Updated ("improved"!) OS X is running, along with updated QuickTime and other Apple-recommended updates.
    (3) New version of iTunes is installed.
But in spite of these differences, the problem's effect is the same.
One of AndyO's messages (2.1.1.1?) said something to the effect that if I encounter such problems again there are troubleshooting steps I can take to identify the specific cause and resolve it.
Please, dear readers, what are those steps? I am discouraged, and not just a little worried.

  • Computer will not boot up after recent software install

I recently tried to install a series of software updates. Not all were successful. Soon therafter the computer froze up while in safari. I turned it off and the computer would not boot up on restart, and instead sent me to the darwin login screen. I rebooted in safe mode per these forums, and turned off an itunes startup function, and then rebooted. That seemed to do the trick as I could now get back into the OS, but the computer was dreadfully slow. It froze up again in Safari and I turned it off again, and this time it would not go past the grey startup screen with the apple. I tried safe mode again, but the computer would shut down around 30 seconds after the wheel below the grey apple started turning. I Was able to get my Tiger Install DVD in the drive, and turned the computer back on, but now just get the grey apple screen and the wheel spinning indefinitely. I cannot do an erase and install because my photos are not backed up. Please help!
    Thanks

Hi, Deaton41. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "I recently tried to install a series of software updates. Not all were successful."I suspect the only way you are going to resolve this is by performing an Archive and Install. For important tips on this process, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order. If you follow my FAQ's steps to the letter, then your photos should be AOK, assuming directory corruption hasn't damaged them. I suspect directory corruption is the root cause of the unsuccessful software updates, which that then led to your current problem re: start up.
Before installing future software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
    Good luck!

  • Can I trash "Previous Systems" after Archive and Install?

For details leading up to this question, please see my previous post entitled "Not recognizing password after OS install". Basically I want to know if I can throw out the "Previous Systems" folder that was created when I did an "Archive and Install" re-install of my OS.
    Thanks.

For more information about the previous system folder and what is saved, you can check out Mac OS X: About the Archive and Install feature. Probably the most important piece of information is that the Previous System Folder contains a copy of the /Users folder. If you thought that something was missing from your home folder in the new system after the upgrade, you could copy it from the /Users folder. But, if you selected the option "Preserve User and Network Settings" when you did the Archive and Install, this should not be necessary.
Personally, what I would do is to leave the Previous System Folder be for a couple of weeks. If you don't find anything missing, then it should be okay to delete it.

  • My 3G won't restore to backup after new software install

I tried downloading the new operating software for my 3G and had minor problems. After reading online that it is best to go thru the restore process versus updating, my husband and I both followed the procedure online. We both backed up our phones and then restored them to factory settings. This installed the new software on the phone. After that, we restored to back-up. My husband did this with no problem. I have had so many problems. Basically, my phone will restore to factory settings with new software, but when I try restoring to back0up, the phone just freezes up and continues to the reboot screen over and over and over until you hold the nap and home buttons to shut down phone. I keep getting error messages such as "your iphone cannot be synced. the required disk cannot be found.
HELP!!! I called apple and after 4 calls, the only solution was to take m phone into an Apple store for service. The problem is I live over 150 miles from an Apple store.
Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I have even tried just running on the restored phone with nothing on it for 2 days and tried backing up today and had the same problem again. Currently, I have no contacts, no emails, no photos, no music, no anything and I live and die by my phone.
    Please help!!

  • Problem Deleting Previous System after Archive and Install

Earlier in my time with this wonderful iMac, I did an Archive and Install to try and resolve a slight problem. I read all the docs beforehand and knew it would save the previous system in its own folder and saw that I could likely delete that folder afterwards.
I have waited months since then, (almost forgotten about this folder) but have never had reason to want anything there, so today decided to delete it.
I dragged the entire previous system folder to trash and tried to empty trash. It deleted most of the stuff, but kept one package DownloadReader7.pkg complaining of locked files.
I have used Pacificist to look at the contents of this package and it says it is a receipt. It contains elements of Adobe Reader Download Manager.app
I have looked on my present working system and can not find an equivalent.
    So two questions...
    1. Is it safe to delete this package (if I knew how)?
    2. If it is safe to delete it, HOW do I, when it appears to have locked elements when I try to empty trash?

It's safe to delete any files in the PSF.
Usually all you need do is press the OPTION key before selecting Empty Trash. If that doesn't work the next thing to try is restart the computer after you've dragged the file to the Trash. If neither works then visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving Trash problems.

  • How do I restore previous settings after archive and install?

I had to do an archive and install (with the box unchecked about users) on Friday after I had a kernel panic issue, but now I don't know if there is a way to restore my previous settings and access my previous files. I found the "previous system" folders, but it restricts my access to almost all of the folders, and I can't even find all of my music (iTunes) files or my stickies. I also can't find all of my bookmarks and internet settings. I'm totally panicked...there is a lot of information for my business that I really can't afford to lose. Please help me!

    See the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107297.
The following can also apply to locating and moving data from a Previous System Folder. The "Home" folder will be /Users/shortname/ where "shortname" is the user account name you created.
Because you did not transfer the users accounts when you did the Archive and Install you may have created a new user account and password that is not the same as the one you previously used. This means the PSF has different permissions associated with it.

  • Can not turn on wireless after Windows vista install driver issue?

    Hi all,
Not sure if this is the right place for the post, if not I apologies in advance.
I have a Compaq Presario C700 (C730EM) on which the hard drive died on me, I brought a new one and installed Windows vista premium from disk (not a backup / recovery disk).
All seems fine however I can not turn on the wireless, the C700 has a wireless button on the top left hard side (which has a red LED when not on). Normally you push this and it turns on (turns LED Blue) but nothing!
I have commented wired and updated windows etc. and have tired to find wireless driver which I guess I’m missing? Not sure if it’s wireless driver missing or a keyboard driver?
After installing a few drivers which I thought where right no joy!
    Can anyone help?

That is a message telling you to connect your iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Do it and see what happens. You may need to restore your iPad but first just connect the iPad to the computer and see if iTunes instructs you to finish the update.

  • How do i find previous system after save and install mac os x

The title pretty much describes my question. Due to the fact that my machine was irritating slow, I re-installed the operating system Mac OS version 10.5.6.
I choosed the option 'save and install' and followed the prosedure. Afterwards, I got the message that the old system was in a newer version and that I had to upgrade the mashine before I could get hold of the old files. So I upgraded to 10.5.8, but still couldn't and can't find any previous system-map. I then transferred programmes and files from an old PoweBook G4, and the programmes seems to have been transferred all right, but documents are gone and the photos are not recognizable.
I regret doing the re-installetion! and wonder if its ever possible to recover files from the previous system.
Oops, I discovered another problem: The word-program doesn't function properly.

I've just had a look through the MindNode Pro support site, which did actually help (thank you), because it reminded me that Mobile Documents is in ~/Library. I was able to open iCloud files from the Terminal at least (once I remembered to add the .mindnode suffix). MindNode, however, brings up the same error as before. I tried using TextEdit to open a link to a TextEdit document stored in iCloud, and exactly the same thing happened.
I don't know why this happens, but it seems strange that you can open documents from Terminal in this way, but not from the applications themselves (or cross-application). I've just noticed that the error message I described in the initial post substitutes things like %20 or %22 for certain characters: could that be what's causing the problem, or is that just the way the link is displayed by the error itself?

  • HP Photosmart 7660 not printing in 10.6.4 after old software install

    Hi all...
I have a client who took her MacBook running 10.6.4 to Florida with her. She has a Photosmart 7660 printer at her residence there. Rather than just plugging the printer in, she installed older software from the CD that came with the printer. Now, the Mac detects the printer is there but there is an immediate error (in the print queue) when attempting to print anything.
I am unsure of how to proceed, and all help is appreciated!
    BD

She needs to go to HP's website and download the latest SW for her printer, install it, and then run Software Update to get the latest drivers that HP passed on to Apple and which are included in HP Printer Drivers v.2.5.2 for Mac OS X v10.6 available at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907

Do you know what version it was you installed?
I would start with a clean uninstall of that Desktop Manager software (that is what you installed?). See this link for instructions:
    http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-software/25937-how-perform-clean-uninstall-reinstall-blackberry-...
Then, I would recommend downloading and installing Desktop Manager verions 4.6 from here:
    https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22
Persoanlly, I would recommend the version you find there withOUT the Media Manager software.

how do i reconnect itunes (that is installed on my new OS drive C:) to my old itunes library (installed on old media drive G:)?

Press and hold down shift as you launch iTunes, keep holding until this dialog appears.
Click Choose Library... and browse to the old library that you want to connect to. This would normally be found at \Users\<User>\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl or, \Documents and Settings\<User>\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
In some cases you may need to fix security permissions on the folder. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
