Reconstituting iTunes after problems on G5 with Leopard upgrade.

Where do all of the iTunes bits reside on a system? I need to reconstitute iTunes after problems upgrading from Tiger to Leopard using "archive and install".

Sorry,
This is just a user to user forum. If anyone has a fix or work around they will help.

  • What problems are associated with an upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard?

    Hi folks.
Is it possible to upgrade directly from Tiger to Snow Leopard, without having to buy Leopard? I've seen many answers around the web, many of them conflicting. There appear to be possible associated problems if you bypass Leopard. But as I'm not certain that what I read is correct I thought I'd come straight to the Community and ask.
    Thanks in advance.
(Only reason I'm asking is I persuaded my mother to buy her first Mac (second hand) and it has Tiger loaded onto it. I'd like her to have a more up to date software.)

The computer has to be an Intel Mac.
The basic requirements for Snow Leopard are as follows:
An Apple computer with an Intel Processor
    1GB of Memory (RAM)
5GB of hard drive space (Storage)
    DVD drive for installation
You can go directly from Tiger to Snow.
Possible problems: make sure the current third party Tiger apps will be compatible. 1 GB RAM is bare bones. You want more than that.
Before upgrading make sure you have the current Mac configuration backed up completely. Use a cloning program like Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone on an external drive.

  • How to install a clean install with leopard upgrade DVD!

Does somebody know how to do an clean install with a Leopard upgrade DVD?
I bought my MacBook for 1 week ago, and them said that i would get leopard sent later. And when i get it, its a upgrade cd that i cant install only leopard on my ny frsh hard-drive. *** apple?

First, there is no such thing as a "clean install" option in OS X. But the "cleanest" install is to start with a reformatted drive (using Disk Utility's "Partition" tab), followed by an install of the OS that will be cleansed of any traces of OS or file system corruption. (The "unclean" options, "Upgrade" & "Archive & Install" won't be possible, & the erase part of "Erase & Install" is at this point redundant.)
However, if you use Setup Assistant (which runs after rebooting) or Migration Assistant to bring over copies of old system components, applications, & settings, you may be reintroducing something "unclean" from the old versions.
This said, if your up-to-date disk is just an updater (nobody seems to know yet), you can do a "cleanest possible" install by following the above with your original Tiger Installer disk, letting it reboot & not importing anything during setup, & then following the instructions supplied with the up-to-date disk to upgrade. At this point, you may want to clone the startup disk for future reference, before adding back in your apps & user files by whatever method(s) you chose.

  • E-mail folders that did not come through with Leopard upgrade

I had many e-mail folders in my Apple Mail that did not come through in my Leopard upgrade. I do have them backed up on a Lacie. Any easier suggestions then going to the back up. Can you drag from the abckup to the new e-mail set up on Leopard

    I found them.

  • Iphone unable to Sync with Itunes after the 5.0.1 IOs upgrade

I get an error message when I try to sync my iPhone 4 with my iTunes. It reads:
"The iPhone "XXXX" cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the selected items (additional 7.25GB required)."
My status bar for the phone on iTunes says that with everything selected, I have 2.7GB free on my phone.
I've also noticed that when it attempts to sync it cancels the sync after attempting to download something about a Safari safe downloading something or other (I've never been able to catch the whole wording because it cancels shortly after the attempted download)
This is frustrating, how might this be fixed, or how might I downgrade my OS to a previous version?
    Thanks!

    3 things to try:
    1. disable anti trojan / virus real time scanners - close and reopen itunes - try to sync
    2. disable firewall - close and reopen itunes - try to sync
    3. disable your wifi and/or lan connection - close and reopen itunes - try to sync
(vpn software also seems to cause problems sometimes)
it seems they made some changes in the way it connects (prob in for the tethering) and its causing some issues for some (my connection failure was caused by -a squared- my anti trojan program)

  • Random iTunes library problem or bug with duplicates

iTunes (Mac) spontaneously creates duplicate songs and does some unusual things in the process. The duplicate songs only appear in my library, the music media remains intact most of the time. Sometimes iTunes moves one or two songs from the same recording to a separate folder and puts in outside the iTunes Media folder.
The duplicate songs that appear in the library appear randomly. Sometimes both dup songs play fine, even though there is only one source file for the song. Sometimes only one plays, so I have to delete the one with the exclamation mark. Often one of the 2 dup songs has the wrong artwork. This wouldn't be a big issue if I didn't have such a large volume of music and this wasn't happening to hundreds and hundreds of songs, which need to be dealt with manually one at a time.
I have several music folders (CD , Downloads) inside the Master iTunes Media folder on the ext HD
In iTunes Perfs I have enabled "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder." This setup worked fine in the past, before 2010.
I've repaired permissions regularly and have repaired the Boot HD.
I first starting noticing this problem at some point in 2010 while using iTunes 9. Upgrading to iTunes 10 has not helped.
Any ideas on what's going on or what I might try to fix the problem?
Is this a bug in iTunes?
If I re-installed iTunes and could return to an earlier version which one should I use ?
Specs. iTunes 10.3.1 with 350 GB of music on an external HD

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.
I need some clarification on your instructions. Once I have Exported my Library to the desktop and moved my iTunes folder to the desktop I can't proceed as you suggest.
When I open iTunes it opens the original library full of all my music. If I launch iTunes (while holding down C key) I can create a new empty iTunes Library inside the Music folder.
If I try to import (open) the original Library.xml file on the desktop nothing happens. If your saying I need to import all the music in my iTunes folder (inside the Music folder) I can't do that since all my music is on an external HD.
Are you saying I need to reimport the entire contents (all the music) in my iTunes Media folder?
I thought your solution was aiming to simply rebuild the directory structure while leaving the original music media alone.
    Thanks for helping clarify.
Or could you point me to a support.apple.com/kb article?

  • Preserving Comcast Connection with Leopard Upgrade

My computer is messed up somehow; I haven't been unable to upgrade to Leopard, and I can't even clone my hard drive. So I'm just copying one folder at a time to my external hard drive, after which I'm going to try Leopard's Erase and Install option.
One of the first things I'm going to want to set up if I get Leopard installed is my Internet connection. I have an account with Comcast. Does anyone here know what files or information I need to copy to make sure I can still connect via Comcast?
On another note, I've discovered that if I unplug my Comcast cord, I'm often still connected to the Internet. It appears that my computer has automatically logged into someone else's account...I guess. This stuff is still new for me.
It would be great if I could hitch a ride and not have to pay for service. But is it legal?
    Thanks.

"...One of the first things I'm going to want to set up if I get Leopard installed is my Internet connection. I have an account with Comcast. Does anyone here know what files or information I need to copy to make sure I can still connect via Comcast?"
Nothing specific. Your Mac should detect the signal from your modem and you're there.
"On another note, I've discovered that if I unplug my Comcast cord, I'm often still connected to the Internet. It appears that my computer has automatically logged into someone else's account...I guess. This stuff is still new for me."
Your airport card is probably picking up someone's wireless router. If you are able to get on the internet via their wireless access then their router is open and not password protected. There are always discussions whether this is a legal or moral issue. I believe you should have your own service and not jump into someone else's just because they are stupid enough to leave the door open.

Has anybody an Idea, what happens and if this issue can be resolved?
    kind regards,
    André

Use another audio output device, is the way I see it. I don't think this issue will be addressed, there simply aren't enough of us to warrant any time spent on a fix. I'm going to start looking at other USB D/A converters, and just run their analog output to one of the analog ins on my Yamaha. Or scrap the yamaha altogether for something with a little more headroom and cleaner PA stage -- love my AP-U70 as I may, it was always a bit rough around the edges, and started clipping -- even soft clipping -- way too soon. My biggest concern is how I was under the impression that as long as USB audio worked, my Yamaha would work, since I thought USB audio was a common platform that all devices played nice with. If that's the case, how many more smaller-user-base USB devices are being dropped from the "friendly" list during OS updates? Will I plug an older digital camera in one day to find that it is no longer supported? Or my Harmony remote? What next?

  • Audio Buzzing/Crackling with Leopard Upgrade

I've recently upgraded to Leopard and am experiencing a strange issues.
Immediately following the upgrade, I can now hear an attached USB drive spinning up and down through the speakers. Clicking mouse buttons periodically results in popping/cracking sounds through the speakers. It seems that any firewire/USB activity is now causing line-noise through the audio.
If I switch everything (audio cable, firewire & USB devices) over to a Tiger Mac Mini, no buzzing/crackling comes through the speakers.
I figure that Apple changed the audio gain or something, or there is another thing I am missing.
Has anyone else experienced this same issue?
Any insight would be much appreciated.

It could be a driver problem. Are you using any 3rd party audio drivers?
You might also check into the main Leopard forum where you will get many more replies and probably a solution.
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1225
My audio did not change, either on my G5 or MBP, but I don't use my external HD in the USB mode, but I certainly do not hear any mouse clicks via the speakers.
You might simply have a bad ground or broken wire or something.

  • ARD Version 2.0 - Can't run with Leopard Upgrade and can't upgrade to ARD 3

I tried to load in my ARD (Version 2) to my Powerbook that now runs the Leopard OS. It loads in but every time I try and run it, the program asks for my administrator password - then uploads some files and says the program is installed. I click "okay" and then ARD shuts down. This is a constant loop that won't let me run the program.
Any ideas why this is happening?

ARD 2 is not compatible with Leoapard

  • A few problems with Leopard running on my White iMac...

I have only found 2 problems so far with Leopard running on my iMac. First off, the most annoying one:
Sometimes, especially when switching users, the screen turns to the "gray screen of death." You know, the one with the request to restart your computer in like 4 languages and a huge picture of a power button... anyway, it is getting quite annoying and I wish I could make it stop. It has also happened when I have been dealing with moving large amounts of data, "large pictures, movies, etc.)
And now, the second problem. I was just looking up the memory left on my hard drive when I noticed something I hadn't before. my 160gb hard drive had 50gb left. not too strange there. but when I checked through all the things (apps, users, system, library, developer, etc.) in it (I simply did apple-i and checked the gb each of them took up) and after a quick add-up on my calculator widget, all the things in the hard drive added up to 50gb. so I have 50gb free, 50gb used and a 160gb hard drive. How does that work? Do I need to do something to get that extra 60gb back or is it just gone???

There's probably a way to coerce Finder.app into showing everything
(all is possible in unix) -- but I don't know the OS-X magic words.
It told me that improper of the "sudo" command could lead to data loss
and i don't want to risk doing anything stupid (like a misspelling) that
could lead to my hard drive being wrecked.
Good advice. IMO, the 'du' (disk usage) command is safe, because it's
'read only' -- but I undestand that you'd be hesitant to trust your data
to advice fom an anonymous voice from "The Internets." I can't/won't
    argue with common sense.
You can run the same command without the 'sudo' prefix. It might
miss a few things and/or spit some 'permission denied' messages,
but the results will at least be a lower-bound of disk usage.
...in the beginning was the command line,

  • I wiped my computer, and now iTunes doesn't work. Does iTunes no longer work with Leopard, or did I do something wrong?

I wiped the computer using the original OS disk so I could give it to my mom in July. iTunes worked when I did it. I just updated the system and tried logging onto iTunes for the first time since I wiped the memory. I can log on, but nothing appears on the home screen. It looks like I can download files from the internet and import them into iTunes, but I can't access the stuff I've purchased from Apple. Is the iTunes Store no longer compatible with Leopard? Do I have to purchase a newer OS to access my purchases? Or did I do something wrong?

Hi, likely something else isn't updated, maaybe Safari?
Is his he version you have, & Safari 5.0.3 or more?

  • Update Flash after doing Snow Leopard upgrade

Just as an FYI: I upgraded from 10.5.8 to 10.6 this morning. Before the upgrade I had the latest version of Flash (10,0,32,18). After the upgrade I had an earlier one--I don't remember which one exactly, but it was something like 10,0,23,? or so. You can check your Flash version here:
    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Anyway, be sure to update Flash after you do the Snow Leopard upgrade.

Sounds like you've damaged your system by forcing it to quit and restart in the middle of installing. You probably also had something wrong with your machine that was interfering with the installation in the first place, as the Snow Leopard installer is ordinarily pretty good at failing without damaging anything if something causes it to fail.
I would advise [repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417]. If that fails, you'll need to erase and repartition the hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard from scratch. If repair works, but you still can't boot, you probably have corruption in important system files. You could try installing Snow Leopard over it at this point, while booted from the Snow Leopard disk. If repair shows no problems, post back here, as you've got something a little more exotic than simple hard disk damage going on.
Do you have a backup? If not, it's possible all your data might be gone at this point, depending on what exactly has gone wrong with your computer. You can try to back up from Disk Utility running from the Mac OS X install disk... see the Restore tab. You'll need an external hard drive to which to copy.

  • Lost functionality with Leopard...

    Lost functionality with Leopard upgrade....
1 - AOL for Mac OS X (10.3.7) application: can't access email addresses when writing mail and can't attach files.
2 - Canon's MP Navigator (2.2.2) won't batch scan documents with MP830. Worked fine with Tiger.
3 - Can't mount USB hard drive attached to my airport extreme and when I try the extreme goes offline and I have to restart it.
How about you all. I only used 'em all the time.

    I have the same problem.
After upgrade from my Mac Pro to Mac OS X Lion yesterday, the same problem happened described by danhalli.
No  connection to the printer over 2101nw. The MAC gets all information if an other computer makes a connection to the print server, so the communication works,  however connection cannot be established.
There was no way to fix it. complete new installation from Printer Software or wireless  HP Print Server did not help.
Important:  all other computer in the network are working fine with the connection manager (MAC and Microsoft PC´s)
All MAC computer are working fine  with the SW 10.6.8 . The  SW 10.7.2 does not work I hope it will be fixed soon. If you can not print, it takes a lot of time !!!!

  • Airdisk issues with Leopard.

With Tiger I had my AEBS connected to a USB disk and it worked just fine, no connection problems.
Now, with Leopard, Im running the exact same setup and I keep getting disconnected from the USB Disk.
When moving files between my MBP and the USB Disk I get a Server Connection Failure, and then it makes me Eject my USB Disk.
Any clues on how to remedy the situation?
I do a lot of sharing between my USB Disk and MBP, so any help is welcome!
    Thanks in advance!

I am so glad I checked out what the problems were before I upgraded. I bought an AEBS because I thought this was going to be a great way to work in Leopard, It's the backbone of my home network backup system. I have been using the AirDisc with Apple Backup 3.1.1, and although it did take a whole weekend to make the first backup (road trip!), it has been working very well since, (only a problem with iDVD project files). I use it to backup 3 macs, and I was looking forward to Time Machine. I guess Apple will wait for my family pack purchase until this is cleared up. New features sound neat, but I can't throw out what works for what will not.
