Record a phone interview on my iPhone?

Hello-
I've been trying to figure out a way to record phone calls I make on my iPhone. I have an old set up that worked really well with my Verizon phone but the connections don't work on my iphone. I've tried a number of adapters to get a 3.5mm plug to fit a 2.5mm plug but I've been have all sorts of issues trying to get my voice to record as well as the person I'm talking to.
Is there just a simpler solution I haven't heard of yet? Some software or an internet application?
Thanks very much!

Here's how I would do it...
1) Buy this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=7C3 E400&fnode=home/shopiphone/iphone_accessories/cablesdocks&nplm=TN550LL/A and this: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=62E A09E8&fnode=home/shopiphone/iphone_accessories/cablesdocks&nplm=TN548LL/A
(or similar products, I have both of those personally and have found them to work very well)
2) Plug the splitter into the iPhone
3) Put the iPhone stereo headset into one side of the splitter, and the cable into the other
4) (With this step I am assuming you have a mac)Open Garageband and create a new project. Create a new track, and select real instrument. Change the input to "built in audio" and make sure the monitor and metrenome are off.
5) Listen to the call through your headset and talk into the phone as usual. This way your voice will be recorded and you will be able to hear the conversation though your headset without creating feedback in garageband.
I hope that helps you...

That's not a feature of the iPhone. You would have to route your calls through a 3rd party service to do so.

  • Recording a phone interview

I have to record an interview with a WWII veteran by phone and don't know the best way to feed audio into FCP. Has anyone had experience with getting a signal from a phone (a normal land-line) into a computer?

Here's a versatile little box. You'll find all sorts of great uses for it, once you realize it's potential.
    Gentner Box
You actually hook up a nice mic and this box replaces the telephone handset (you do need a phone with a separate handset and base for dialing - $5 at Target).
I have done time sensitive shoots where we actually hooked up an output of the mixer to this box and sent it back down the phone line to a transcription service. At the end of the interview, the producer checked his email and already had a transcript.
Plus, it's perfect for recording phone interviews, too, which is what you're looking for. It can also be used with an earpiece to allow the producer to interview your subject over the phone while you shoot the interview on location.
Like I said, tons of great uses.

  • Phone interview recording? directly to computer harddrive or dv deck?

    Hi,
I'm a documentarian, and i'm looking into various ways of gathering phone interviews with my iphone. I have the regular 8gig iphone, not the new one btw.
So, i'm thinking about how to make a proper set up for the phone interview process. I don't want to just put the phone on speaker and record it that way, because one party is going to outpower the other in volume and the speaker never sounds that good anyways...
so, that leaves a setup that runs a line directly to my laptop(or miniDV deck. either or) and into an audio program.
If i find a spliter that goes to the headphone jack that my headset can plug into on one side, and run the line to the audio in on my laptop with the other... should that work?
I'm concerned with being able to pick up both sides of the conversation, and having them be about the same level/quality...
has anyone given this issue a troubleshoot yet?
    radioshack here i come...

    anyone?

  • How Can I record Phone Interviews in Garage Band for a podcast?

Hello...I have a Blue Snowball microphone, IMAC, and Garage Band 3.0.2.
I would like to record phone interviews in Garage band and be able to keep the incoming call at a high enough and clear enough level. So I am not to loud and they are not to low.
This wil be or a podcast.
    Please help, any ideas?
    -Chris

There's cheap telephone interfaces at Radio Shack (you might do a search in this forum, they have been mentioned before) which plug into the Mac's line-in. Since the Snowball is USB, you can go to the Audio-Midi Utility and create an "Aggregate Device" that consists of your line-in and your Snowball - that way you can record the two sources to two separate tracks and adjust their levels independently.

The format from the phone is :
h.264 encoded video, AAC audio. Both standards of MPEG 4.
You need Windows Media Player version 12 or above to play MP4 (or add the codecs to your current version).

  • Can I use my iphone to record a phone conversation?

  • Recording phone interviews...

Anyone know if this is possible with the iPhone and it's new audio recording function (or some other app out there)?

I use iDicto. This apps lets you record your voice. But I also use it to record phone conversations. The only way to do it is to use another phone to make the call, then hold that phone up to the iPhone. The recordings are pretty good. Of course, you have to tell the other party that you are recording the conversation.
    Hope this helps.

  • Recording podcast skype/phone interviews

    Hello,
I have been doing a podcast for a few years now and, up to this point, all my interviews have been recorded in studio.  I would like to venture out and do phone interviews with guests.  I have searched on the internet and there seems to be a LOT of options.
It looks like going through Skype is the best way to go.  Is that true?  Also, I wanted to see what you would recommend as far as recording software goes. I would prefer it to be 1) easy to use 2) for the guest to have the option to be on skype, cell phone or a land line 3) compatible with a PC and Audacity
Thanks in advance for your help!

Skype can work: it can also be problematic; but I've never tried doing this, and though I have handled a lot of telephone and landline interviews it was using professional broadcast equipment (very expensive). So I can't give you much help on mixers and the like. The best place to ask, oddly enough, would be in the GarageBand forum. There are  number of people there with experience of 'semi-professional' and domestic equipment.
I would, however, suggest avoiding cell phones; the results tend to be very poor. There are programs which will record off Skype, which would probably be your easiest option.

  • Way to record a phone call?

Is there an app or a way to use an iPhone to conduct a phone interview, then use iTunes or (??) to turn it into a podcast?

I don't understand the so-called "legal" issue. If you buy a Nokia E61 or later (Symbian S60) and download the application Call Recorder Pro and then use it on you Nokia to record incoming and outgoing calls while it makes a pip-pip sound all the time, are you, Nokia, Symbian, and the app developer breaking the law?? Are ALL call recorders breaking the law? Where are all the court cases then?
Is it not that all parties should KNOW that a call is being recorded ONLY if the conversation is to hold up as evidence in a court of law? The pip-pip sound (which cannot be switched off) is the mutual indicator that the call is being recorded or a cue to the other party that they should ask "what is that sound?".
I really hoped that OS 3 would have provided this itself or allowed 3rd parties to do this. I miss this function terribly. I used to use this great app (Call Recorder Pro) on my Nokia E61. It is particularly suited for taking lots of details from a call while driving - no need to stop to write down details etc. You can play the call back while driving to absorb or follow content - no need to read an SMS while driving etc. It's fantastic. You can later archive your selected calls to disk. It's also great for recording "promises" or names of people or commitments from service providers/contractors during a conversation. They can hear the pip-pip (or you tell them what that sound is) so they know what they say had better be true and factual. I cannot for the Life of Me understand why Apple can't or won't make this available! What is their case? Why do other manufacturers have it available? IMHO all you got to do is have a disclaimer on Application start-up (like GPS car navigation does), thereby passing legal responsibility on the the user - SIMPLE!
Please give Apple feedback (http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html), so that they are more aware of our thoughts.
