Record Level = Speaker Volume

Currently my record level is equal to my speaker volume. When I mute the speakers, the record level is 0. No record level controls are visible. How can I fix this?

-r in the shortcut target box made no difference. Still no record level controls
In the Audio Mixer, the slider for speaker volume moves in tandem with the Audition slider. They cannot be controlled independently.
It should be .exe -r (with a space). If you can't get record options at all, then something weird is going on, and we'd need to know more about your particular PC or laptop.

  • Headphone and Internal Speaker Volume Levels

I saw a topic about this earlier, but it has become locked, so I thought I would post another to see if anyone has any information about it. Until recently, I have been able to set my headphone volume and internal speaker volume at different levels. In other words, I can set the speakers to a certain volume, plug in my headphones, set the headphones to a different volume, then unplug the headphones and the volume changes back to what it was before I plugged in the headphones. I don't know exactly when it started happening, but I can no longer set these at two separate levels. I have seen that other people are having this problem, so I know it isn't just something stupid that i am doing. Anyone know why this is happening, or what I can do about it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Assuming that you're not listening to songs that have been imported at very low level, the next thing to do is a full Restore. A Restore will remove everything form your iPod, reset it and then put back onto the iPod only what is in your iTunes library. So if you have items that are not in your library (and therfore on the computer) you need to sort that out first.
I believe it will also reset your user data in any Apps you use. There is a backup method for this, but I'm not sure how it works as I've never tried it.
If that doesn't work, there must be a hardware issue, which means booking it in for service.

  • Record Level Adjust for Audio in Voice Memo or Video Recorder

I would like to request that Apple allow me to adjust the record audio volume level when recording in Voice Memo or Video Recorder modes. Often I find that the audio is distorting and most times I cannot step back far enough to avoid distortion levels. While I love the ability to SEE the audio level in Voice Memo mode, I am hoping that it is only a matter of firmware upgrade to be able to ADJUST the record level.
Also, if it is possible, it would be great to see some indication of audio level when recording video... something simple like a bar graph with green, yellow and red bars with the highest level reached sticking for a few seconds so that I can tell what the level is.
An alternate solution (if none of the above is possible in a firmware update) would be to automatically adjust the recording level to prevent audio distortion.
Thanks for the great iPod and here's hoping for a great firmware update in the near future!

Thanks, I've submitted my recommendation to Apple.

  • MacBook Pro speaker volume

I just finished importing a ton of CDs to my laptop and now I find I cannot get the internal speaker volume up past a whisper.  Any thoughts?  This is barely audible yet is working fine on an external output device via Bluetooth.  And, for those of you who say reset PRAM or buy external speakers, this problem never existed until I recently began importing my music library.  I'm sure it's just a setting but I don't know where to begin and definitely do not want to re-import 1000's of songs at a new volume.  Please help.  Thanks.

    Hello there, Donna.
There are a few places where sound can be adjusted on your Mac. If you're in the iTunes application, the following link from the online iTunes Help Guide provides some standard information:
Adjust the volume - iTunes Help
Adjust the volume of music and video
Change the volume for all songs (like turning the volume knob on a stereo): Use the volume slider at the top of the iTunes window.
The maximum volume is limited by your computer’s volume setting.
Adjust the volume of a particular song or video: Select it, choose File > Get Info, click Options, and drag the volume slider. iTunes uses this setting each time the song or video plays.
Have all songs and videos always play at the same volume level: Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Playback, and select Sound Check.
If you’re using remote speakers connected to an AirPort Express: You can use the volume controls on the speakers as well as the iTunes volume controls. To use only the speaker’s controls, click the AirPlay button , click Single, and choose the speakers from the pop-up menu.
SEE ALSOChoose which speakers to use
Additionally the Mac OS Help Guide provides this information:
Turn the volume up or down - Mac Help
Turn the volume up or down
To change your computer’s volume, click the Volume control in the menu bar, then drag the slider to adjust the volume. If the Volume control isn’t in the menu bar, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Sound. Click Output, then select the “Show volume in menu bar” checkbox.

  • Recording levels

    Hi
I have a question about recording levels in relation to some of the instruments in Logic, specifically, the acoustic pianos. I've noticed that even when set at a level of 0.0, the volume is only registering in the very lowest section of the meter at around -18. Playing with force, which I don't necessarily want to do, only brings this level in the meter up to about -11. And pushing the level all the way up to +6.0 only results in barely any difference to the volume being recorded, and if I did that anyway, I wouldn't have anywhere to go during mixing.
I hope you can see my point, which is probably an absurdly simple one, and probably not an issue anyway, but I'm just wondering if when the project is complete everything recorded will be governed by the low volume/signal of this particular instrument. Not that it sounds too quiet, the volume is perfectly adequate, but my concern is the recording signal/level is not strong enough because it's registering so low a meter reading.
This is something that's just bugging me, and probably so simplistic it's the sort of thing you hunt for in manuals without luck. Some reassurance/advice would be welcomed with thanks.
    Robert

Well don't record your Tracks at 0dB, never, especially not Audio tracks. There is absolutely no need for that and many engineers will tell you that Audio tracks recorded at lower levels (at 24 Bit) are much better to handle and the overall Mix will sound more tranparent. You have to understand the principle of additive Mixing meaning that two tracks played back at 0dB will add up and already clip the Outputs. Now iamgine what 24 tracks played back at maximum non-clipiing level (odB) will add up to...
In your template(s) (if you have one ore more) set all fader and Instrument levels to -10dB to start with. If you want to make something louder, turn the other tracks down first until you hear that particular Instrument. Read some books by Bob Katz about Mixing and Mastering, start learning now....

  • I can't raise my recording level when recording my guitar

When I plug my guitar directly into my computer, GarageBand (line in) with guitar volume on max I get a weak recording signal (10% signal strength). It does record with decent playback but the signal is very weak with lots of headroom. When I adjust the "recording level" slider (even to max) I only gain another, maybe 10%, nowhere near the clipping red lights. Again, my guitar volume is set at max. Any ideas???

Your guitar's signal just isn't strong enough, you either need to pre-amplify it somehow (e.g. by using a pre-amp or a mixing console) or get an audio interface that does the analog-to-digital conversion.

  • IMic recording level.

I'm using the iMic USB interface to record drums but the volume control for Real Instrument is "greyed out"... can't be adjusted (it's "locked" all the way to the left). The computer preferences recognize and receives the input device. But I can't raise the input to a recordable level in GB. Is this a software problem?
I can record without any problems using Audacity. But why won't GarageBand allow me to adjust the recording level?
I have tried reinstalling OSX and GarageBand but I still have the same problem.
There's nothing wrong with the iMic because it works with Audacity.
    Any ideas?

Hmmm well it appears that it is working. I've discovered that I am able to record, but the slider in GB is still greyed out so I can't adjust the recording level; but it seems to be ignoring the GB setting and just looking to the system preferences for the mic level. So I can only assume that it must be a software fault with GB.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Recording Level Low in Garage Band, Avid mBox mini, NT2

    HI there,
I have setup a home studio. I have a MacBook Pro connected to Avid Mbox Mini Soundcard, two speakers and a Rode NT2 condenser mic.
For some reason, the voice or acoustic recording level is very low...I can still record but the sound level is very low and if I increase the input volume then there is a terrible echo...I am sure there is something wrong.
These are the solutions I have already tried:
    - System preferences, I put the input as Avid Mini...and activate +48 button to power the mic.
    - Garage band, I move track volume to track pan, Monitor ON, 24bits...and the Recording Level is gray-out since I am using an external sound card (I assumed because of what I read).
Any idea on how I can solve this issue, I am sure there is something wrong, the mic and soundcard can record this bad.
    Thanks in advance. Mariano

Hi, thanks very much for your reply gjmnz...I finally went to Virgin like 7 times...during the same day...to figure out what was the issue...and here is what I have learnt:
    - The memory of the computer is very sensitive to recording, that is why I read some blogs saying that the mic is unstable, some times is picking up and sometimes is not...for instance I was using Torrents at the same time so the pick up was horrible...over time. Because the torrent and internet connection was eating my memory, event though I have 8gb
    - The other thing I learnt and I agree with you (thank you) is that you shouldnt be paying much attention to the leds levels in GB...that will miss you, you have to test and try different gain levels.
    - The last thing and what solved my problem, was to buy an analog mixer console for the mic to enhance the picking...And now it is working properly to the point that now it makes senses to use the lower of the Dbs...the NT2a has -4 or -8 for ambient noise cancelling...
Conclusion, for me at least...if you bought a Avid Mbox mini and you have a Rode Condenser mic (NT2a or NT1000, I tried both) the only way to enhance the capturing of the mic is to get a mixer console...
This is the one I bought http://www.mackie.com/products/402vlz3/ (it is ok...but works for home recording).
Hope this helps the rest...I read that the low volume issue is being around since 2007...and I saw a lot of question unanswered...
    Best, Mariano

  • Erratic Recording Levels

I am having difficulty with erratic recording levels in SB 2.01. The sound card is an
    Andrea USB pod.
This is what happens: I will record a 20 second sound clip, stop recording and copy and paste
the clip into another file. I will then record the another sound clip. The volume is often 20%
higher when recording the next clip.
I use the USB pod to record in Dragon NaturallySpeaking and to record into Soundbooth.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking automaticlly sets the pod's recording level to 81. When I lower it to
60 for use with SB, it is often too high (The level meters in the Record dialog box are in the red
area). Even when the level is lowered to 43, the level meters are often in the red area. However,
when I shut down and restart SB, 43 is often an appropriate level.
Are the erratic recording levels caused by the sound card driver?

    Hi Durin,
I checked Dragon NaturallySpeaking to find out if there is an option to select which sound card can be used with it. I did not find any such option. I'm using a Dell XPS 420 that came with a "Sigma Tel High Definition Audio Codec" sound card.
I tested the Sigma card with SB. In the recording level dialog box, there are two controls: one for microphone volume and the other for microphone boost. With microphone boost turned off, the recording levels in SB are near zero. Only with the microphone boost turned up to the max of 20db are the recording levels in SB satisfactory.
Do I need a better sound card? I found some lower-priced sound cards that may result in good quality audio when recording in SB. Do you know if the following are decent cards:
    (1) Creative Labs SB0880 PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Sound Card
    (2) PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series
    (3) M-Audio US41750 Audiophile 192 Hi-def Aud Card

  • Focusrite/GBand 'Recording Level' problem.

I recently bought a Focusrite iTrack Solo interface (using with a MacBook Pro) and having downloaded the latest versions of OSX (10.8.5.) and GBand '11, Version 6.0.5 (428.5), still find that I can't record to GBand.
GBand recognises the iTrack in both Input and Output ... I can't adjust the 'Recording Level' slider.
Following the instructions from a link provided in another answer on here (can't remember your name mate ... sorry!) I've gone into 'Audio Midi Setup' and ensured that the rate is set to 44100 (2ch-24bit Integer ?) but found that I was unable to adjust any of the Volume control sliders in the panel below.
I'm pulling what's left of my hair out!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Where is 'recording level' slider in new GB?

In GB 6.05 there was a slider to adjust the input's recording level.  I can't find it anywhere on the new version.   I know there's a track volume level but that does no good if what's recorded was clipping to begin with.

The recording level is in the Smart Controls for the track:
Show the Smart Controls pane and click the button.
You may need to enlarge the Smart Controls pane by dragging the upper border.

  • Ipod  Nano recording level

Is there a way to control recording level? My ipod nano records too low.
    How would I record Higher?

At this point, the software people with iPods purchased in EU countries were using to remove the cap do not work on the 2nd gen nano. No word on when it will. So other than maxing your volume limiter and trying more expensive earphones there really isn't anything you can do right now.

I think your saying in your first post the RECORD icon is not acti've hence you can't record?
I think on the new cards ( XtremeGamer Fatalty) they have done away with What U Hear (aka stereo mix) so you won't be able to but I'm not sure on the XP drivers.
There has been other post like this on Dell forums and audacity?about people not being able to record with cards that dont support mix.
Just to be sure, open the Volume control? > Options > recording and see itf What U hear is listed.
