Recorded too low...Remove hiss from audio?

I'm a noob at Soundbooth and I'm hoping it will help resolve a problem. I shot a video and I think the audio (voice recording) is too low. While editing in Premiere I pulled the audio up in volume and it sounded acceptable... but when burned to DVD there is a hiss. Is there anything I can do with Soundbooth to fix the volume and eliminate the hiss.  The simpler the explaination the better. Thanks!

re 1 & 3- there's a description of how to do this in the STP manual. Just look under the help section and it'll be there. Just read it this weekend and got it to work for me and believe me, I'm not the shapest knife in the drawer. One bit of advice, make an extra sequence before you export to STP so you don't mess up your original audio.
Regarding how to remove the hiss, unfortunately it's not a one size fits all. Jay Rose wrote an article entitle "Shh- the silent art of noise reduction" or something close to that. Definitely try to find that article if you can at DV.com You can always try a low cut or shelf. Start at 130 Hz Male to 200 Hz female and back off if it cuts too off (makes it sound too thin). There's supposed to be a way to compensate for this by doing an eq bump 3 x the frequency you cut or something like that. You can also cut or shelve frequecies above 12000 Hz. Then there's using a downward expander, but that's a little tricky with what STP comes with stock imo. Expanders are better for film/video than noise gates as they are much less abrupt. I would use noise reduction as my last resort and almost never use it at all. A lot of these filters can be applied in FCP.
Honestly, if you ask at the DV.com audio forum I'm sure they'll give you the advice you need. Jay Rose did write a book on post production audio that you might be interested in as well. Pretty much all of what I'm trying to tell you comes from it or that aricles. Unfortunately, I seem to have lost that book.

Just some quick things to check out for now.
If the Premiere Elements audio effects are not working for you, please check out the noise removal offered by the free audio editor named Audacity. Have you used that before?

  • Sound Recorded Too Low

    Hoping someone can help!
On my recent shoot, the recording volume settings were too low (I think) and after capturing to FCP the average reading is around -50 and peaking at -12.
Even upping the sound bar by the max 12dB isn't enough really to repair it. I'm a pretty basic user of FCP so don't know a lot of the technical stuff. I have Soundtrack Pro and don't know if that can help me as I don't know how to use it.
Any help would be hugely appreciated folks as stand to lose an awful lot of material..
    Thanks!

The quick solution is to double your audio tracks
The quickest way to do that is to hold down the Option key while dragging the audio clip to a new track ... before releasing the clip, press the Shift key (while still holding down the Option key). This will create a duplicate clip in perfect sync with the original clip.
You can also use the Dynamic Processor filter to add more gain.

  • Volume too low on download from itunes store how to fix

My download from itunes store won't play on my ipad at a decent volume.  How do I fix it?
Actually, I suspect the download itself is too low and fuzzy.  How do I reload?

If you are having a problem with a song you downloaded from iTunes, you can report it to an iTunes worker and they will redownload the song for you for free.  Go to the song you bought and find where it says "report a problem".  Click on that, and you can explain your problem to an iTunes worker.

  • Removing Pops from Audio

I cut some audio, but there's a pop where the person is ending one word and about to begin the next. What's the logical way of dealing with this issue?
    Thanks.
    - anthony

Hi. Well I guess the "logical" solution is to re-cut the voice over. If that's not possible, zoom in on the waveform of the audio track and see where exactly the pop occurs. If it is between syllables you need to complete and start the words adjacent to the pop, hooray. Just highlight the pop-only waveforms and delete them. If, however, the pop (assuming it was caused by an explosion of air onto the mic) occurs when the speaker pronounces a "p" or another consonant, you can try reducung the lower frequencies with the audio EQ filter--for just that spot -- until the loud explosive fequencies are minimized. Anyway, whatever frequency range the pop is happenning in can be minimized by adjusting the EQ of that moment.

  • Removing echo from audio track.

    Hi
I have audio recorded in a church which sounds great apart from the echo on it. Im at a loss as to which filter, if any will help remove it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Many Thanks
    Adrian

You may be able to reduce the level of echo by using a noise gate; the results will depend upon the nature and level of echo and also other background noise, but some reduction may be possible. Don't be too agreesive in the setting of noise reduction otherwise it will be very obvious that you are gating the sound and you will end up hearing the background sound coming and going as quite often heard on less well processed movies and tv productions.

  • Help : input level too low in Logic from studioKonnekt 48

I tried to record and use some voice microphone and some guitars (telecatser, some preamplified acoustic flattop, some archtops with humbucker or P90...)with Logic and SK 48 TC near.
If the voice setting with the gain trim at 12 were OK or even tooo loud, I NEVER succeeded to raise a level higher (lower..) than - 30 Db and this with the gain trip at the maximum and the main output at the maximum level...This dosen't allow me to work properly. I've tried different entries (1 to 4) than the line inputs and so on..
TC wrote me that they have -62 db in preamp but I could not succeed to raise a workable level.
Situation is quite different when I use a guitar pream (Radial PZ-Pre) or a Para acoustic DI from LR bagss.
Today, I've tried with a bass direct into SK 48, trough the preamp ...but the signal in Logic stayed absolutely loww while the screen indicator of the SK48 hardware showed me enough gain (orange to red)
I a not expert in both audioinyterfaces and Logic. I do not find in Logic how to increase the input gain from the audio interface...
Any help would be more than appreciated...since I have spent days and days to undertsnad and try...and finally I did not record anything since I have this new gears..So, I feel disapointed..
    Ciao
    Chris

+"I do not find in Logic how to increase the input gain from the audio interface..."+
You don't (apart from the level fader of the Record Track, of course).
You can adjust input levels in +Audio MIDI Setup,+ but when I suggested checking there you replied: +"Thanks a lot, but everything is weel set up ???"+
So you need to look at the software that controls your interface.

  • IdeaCentre B520 - sound recording too low, sound on Skype too low

    Hi
When I speak on Skype or use Sound Recorder to record my voice (using internal microphone), the sound is very low.
I think I have turned up every possible Microphone and Audio setting on the system to its highest.
My IdeaCentre B520 is very new and I haven't installed anything else on it other than Skype.
    OS is Windows 7 x64.
I used the Lenovo automatic check for drivers and it said all drivers up to date.
I haven't had a system with an internal microphone before, I literally just talk (loudly) at the monitor, I presume there isn't anything else I need to do?!
Thanks for any help you can give with this frustrating problem!
    Patricia

    Hello Patricia,
This is not good to know that you are encountering the issue with your new desktop.
Please make sure that the Audio driver version is 6.0.1.6294, if it is not then you may download it from the mentioned below web link.
    http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/ie/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_4706.html
If the version of the driver is same then you can try the settings.
    1. Right-click the icon of the speakers icon at the notification area, and then click “Sounds
    2. Click the tab “Recording”, and then click “Microphone” à select “Properties”.
    3. Select the tab “Listen”, and then check “Listen to this device”. Apply it, and the function will be enabled.
    Best Regards,
    Tanuj

  • How to remove hum from audio?

    I know about these options:
Audio Enhancements - Equalization - Hum Reduction.
Audio Enhancements - Audio Analysis - Hum Reduction.
I may not be using these options right, but they can't help me.
I know also that I can use the Graphic Equalizer, but I do not know which graph to adjust to remove the hum. Is there a role of thumb? Any YouTube tutorials anyone know? Plugins?

The hum is my freezer in the background But it is not loud. I just don't like that I can tell that one voice clip ends and one starts because of the background. I have key frames fading start and end of each voice clip, which helps, but isn't there anything else I can do?
To avoid that, you always record a few minutes of your room's ambient noise (or outside if you are outside). Get a lot of that sound with nobody talking or making noise. You then use that in-between your cut dialogue clips so they flow smoothly.
You probably have a second or two in one of the clips where nobody is talking and you can grab that bit and copy/paste it in-between your clips.
Also, FCP X has some room tones built in, in the music media folders. Just search "room tone" and you'll find several. You can pick one of those that sounds the most like the one you've recorded and fade in/out the beginning/end of those clips.
If all else fails, you can put some royalty free music underneath and put a room sound FX on it to make it sound like it's a radio or TV in the room, in the background. This can hide audio issues well.

  • Removing hum from audio

Lost the audio tracks from the mixer, so
all I have is the audio from the RED camera.  There is a constant hum.
I tried the DeHummer tool at different settings, no luck.
All I have is Premiere CS5, no other tools like Audition.  Is there a way to remove the hum
since it is constant?  The audio files are *.mov for some reason, so Audacity didn't help either.  Of all the scenes that could get screwed up, its the one with my five year old in it!  UGH!!!!!
    Thanks for your time,
    Stuart

    Stuart,
Much will depend on the frequency range of the hum and on the frequency range of the Audio that you wish to preserve. This ARTICLE will give you some tips.
While I use Audition, SoundBooth (do you have that program, as it's included in most Adobe suites?) should be able to help, as can the great, little free Audacity.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to remove hiss from a Live Instrument

I have a lot of hiss in one of my live bass tracks. Is there a way to remove it?

Make sure your backup copy is up to date and use that to move the music.
You can also type "move itunes library" into the google search bar.

  • Removing distortion from audio

    Hi guys,
I recently filmed at a mini festival and got a little to close to a speaker, I stupidly left the mic on automatic instead of controlling it manually!
Dumb move I know and I know ultimately it comes down to the raw audio but does anyone know what Final Cut Express 4 audio tools would be best to combat the problem?
Also out of interest, the speaker was on my left side, am I able to control the audio in a way where i can lower the left sides volume and increase the right, does that make sense?!
    Any ideas?!
    Cheers

    Hi
As You might guess - this is tough and often futile. AND I'm much of a paper and clip / trial and error kind of person.
    Left - Rigth balance
    • There are sort of Pan - function in FCE - never used it - the proper way is to learn to use this
    • I un-link the stereo pair of audio and with pen tool adjust amplification - by hand so that it sounds OK to me
    • or I export out as QuickTime and as .aiff - and do the balance in an audio editor like Audacity or Sound Studio etc.
    Noice
    • Wind - nearly impossibly to get good - You might try SoundSoap™ on the exported audio - will help a little.
    • Use Equalizer - also helps - take down everything under 100Hz and then fiddle with the rest to get an as good sound as You like. Still marginal effects.
Or as TV-Broadcasters do - FAKE it by dubbing - Hard to do and most probably need of sound-engineer + people that are good voices - and TIME and Patience.
Result can be excellent but the cost astronomical.
    Yours Bengt W
