Recording a trumpet?

Hi all,
My young son is developing into a decent trumpet player and recently discovered Garageband on my Mac. I now routinely catch him fiddling with loops and developing his own sort of jazz tunes. I'm actually pretty pleased to find him applying what music theory he has learned in this fashion and want to encourage him.
I have an M-Audio 49e hiding in my car trunk for a holiday surprise to help him with input. But I can imagine that at some point he may want to record his own playing (maybe to combine with some jazz drum loops).
Since I have the sneaking suspicion that at some point I may have to get him his own Mac, I would like a reasonably priced suggestion for recording his trumpet. I suppose a decent microphone + preamp?
Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated-- I'm not a musician myself, but I am really pleased that he is showing such interest.

What a great FAQ!
For now I will let the little guy use my new Quad G5 and it has been optimized for video/Photoshop with 2 large 7200 RPM drives and 7 GB RAM. The only "problem" is that he might get spoiled a bit.
I would like to proceed in steps because I want to make sure that he is really interested in the whole process before making large investments -- I like the idea of a Firewire-based or USB interface for the preamp because it can be easily transferred to his own Mac if we decide to go that way. I could probably go with one of the M-Audio offerings to start. I have the PCI 2496 in one of the other machines and have had good luck with it.
I'm pretty undecided about the microphone. I suppose a real "simple" approach (probably one step up from the ibook + built-in mic) would be to let him start out with one of the low end USB mics and see what he thinks. If this really gets him going then move to a preamp + "real" mic.
And at that point I will probably start looking an an iMac or refurbed Dual G5.
What I like about GB is that he seemed to take to the interface very naturally, I basically showed him what little I knew and then left him alone for awhile -- came back to find him fine-tuning his "Ode to Percussion" with 4-5 tracks and having a ball. He's only 11, probably the perfect age to catch the "bug" -- if he wants to move to Logic or one of the other big guns by high school I have no problem with setting him up. I will have to do some reading as well to try to get a handle on things.
Does this sound like a reasonable progression?

Problem recording myself playing trumpet; suddenly experiencing clipping

I discovered I can record my practicing using GarageBand. I'm using a Sony stereo mic that I've connected to my computer. I've been succesfully recording myself for a few months.
Yesterday, it suddenly didn't work. I didn't change anything. At least, I didn't change anything on purpose. It doesn't record properly even when I go back to a saved "song." There is a lot of distortion. Rather than showing the changes in dynamics, the track looks like a solid block.
I'm sure there is a simple solution. But I haven't figured it out yet. I'm getting ready for an audition. Help! I want to use my computer to record and not my minidisc player.

Check your "System Preferences-->Sound-->Input" and make sure your line in is selected (assuming you are going direct into the Mac and not using an interface). When the line in is selected, you can slide the input volume to a comfortable level. When you are done there, check GB's prefs too to make sure you have the line in selected.

I am assuming you know these tips, but just in case...stay back from the mic a couple of feet as the trumpet is a very loud instrument...for very loud notes, turn your trumpet off axis in relation to the mic (you need to find the best angle for your mic) so that the diaphram doesn't get hit by the super-high/powerful blasts.

No trumpet and trombone solo in the Orchestra pack?

I am recording my orchestra piece in Logic 8 with the Orchestra jam pack and can't find the trumpet and trombone (legato/stacc) solo instruments. Don't tell me they are not included! If not, anyone knows a way to get these instruments without buying again a new instrument pack?

If that's the same Jam Pack that one uses for GarageBand, then I don't think they're in there. At least, I can't find them.

Trumpet peaking on one track

Hi all. We recorded a song for a buddy of mine using Garageband. He has a Mackie board and mic'd stuff. I have the tracks and have gotten them sounding pretty good, but the trumpet player was a big, um, sloppy and I want to bring him down in the mix.
Here is my problem... there is a bunch of other sound on that track that I want to keep and I can't figure out how to just get the trumpet a bit lower in the mix.
Any advice where to start?
What I settled on at this point is going in and adjusting the volume down on that track in those spots, but other important stuff gets quieter at those points too, most notable the drums and some bass the mic picked up.

Your best bet would be to use E.Q.
Try the AUGraphicEQ (Info; Details; blank effect), set at 31-band; try one band at a time, starting at mid frequencies, and work your way up. Push each band up until you find the range that the trumpet dominates in, then carefully pull down that range to bring it to a more comfortable level.
It's a tough bet when multiple instruments are on one track, but you might get lucky. Just experiment.

Is there a way to record sounds from keyboard as they are?

So I have a musical keyboard that I've attached to my macbook to record in Garageband. I have a ton of sounds on my keyboard from percussion, brass, piano, etc.
When I record, for example, a trumpet sound from my keyboard into Garageband, Garageband just records the notes using its one version of trumpet or piano or whatever.
How do I get GarageBand to just record the sound as is?
I tried the "real instrument" track option but that ends up record all sound from the microphone on the MacBook and not recording the sound through the MIDI connection.

How to use a compressor to fix the sound of a 2 track live recording?

Can anyone show me the basics - or where to look on the internet?
I have some live recordings from a gig - in stereo. you can't hear the acoustic bass - and the sax and trumpet are way too loud - unfortunately - it was recorded direct to 2 track.
I know this is a deep question - but, even some simple basics of how to boost the bass and get some mids would be helpful.

You asked about a compressor in your subject, but I'm not sure thats what you need. In any case, I got a lot of use out of this pdf back in the day, and still look at it sometimes:

Technically it goes with one of there products, but there is loads of general info.
I would start with your eq, go into your channel eq and make a pretty sharp full cut, not more than 100hz wide. drag it across the spectrum slowly and you will get a feel for what sounds reside where. After you know this you can likely make cuts where the horns come in the most and boost the bass. Bright horns are going have have a lot of body above 7k, while string bass will reside mostly between 70 and 1000

Recording Dry, Mixing Wet

I fairly new to garageband (about two hours total playing with it), but is it possible with the software to record tracks dry with no effect, and add them during mixdown? I've figured out how to make my reocorded acoustic guitar sound like a trumpet or a dirty british guitar (which is quite interesting), but for the life of me I can't figure out how to add a little reverb or delay after it's been tracked. Thanks for the help.

Actually, after I asked this question when re-reading I realized I kinda answered my own question. I realized I can change the effect just as easy as I was changing instruments. I've used all kind of means to record my bands songs as of the past three years (4 track cassette, striaght to cd, cubase, we've tracked in a pro-tools studio...yada yada), but I have to say recording with this program thus far is so easy and intuitive, I can't wait to see what we can come up with on our own. How do I use my web cam to record audio and video? I can get the video to work but no sound.

I want to record both audio and video at the same time. The video works fine but not the audio. I do use Skype without any problems using both.

You did not say what webcam software you are using...

Make sure you have turned on a working microphone in Settings:
YouCam > Right-Side Settings >
Right-Side, Lower-Right, Select a working Microphone from the Drop down list
AND
CHECK "Capture with audio"

You can also buy (for $38 US) YouCam 5.0 from the Cyberlink.com website and it has audio/video and all sorts of other goodies, too. (They have 3.x as well, but why buy what HP already gives you?)

CUBE Not getting All records from DSO

Hi Experts ,
We have a situation where we have to load data from a DSO to a Cube . The DSO contains only 9 records and while we r loading the data into cube , the cube is only getting 2 records . Thus 7 records are missing. Also The Cube contains more Fields than DSO. in the transformations , for the extra fields we have written end routine and those extra fields will get data by reading master data .. Any pointers how to get the missing records or what is the error ...

Pension payment period record issue in Retiree Payroll

Dear Experts,
We are implementing Retiree payroll with new set of wagetypes and payroll area. Now requirement is that there needs to be a provision of recording the balance period of pension payment and further it should be displayed in the form of report. That means say employee has the eligibility of receiving pension from 01.12.1998 to 14.11.2015 and he has received it till Oct, 2010, remaining balance period needs to be projected in month and days like 60.14/98.12 etc.
Now please suggest how to achieve it, should we create a custom infotype for storing it or any other way is there.

It is Indian payroll.
Requirement is to store the balance period of pension payment, like if one employee is eligible to get pension ( as per our pension benefit scheme) for 10 years 3months 15 days since his retirement date and has already received for 36 months i.e. 3years, we need to store and display that he is eligible to get pension for another 7years 3months 15 days in 87.15 format (i.e. 7*12+3= 87months and 15days) on monthly basis.
This will be also captured in a report later on.

Yeah, I got the "200" because I'm transferring 300 training sessions from VHS to DVD. I use the RCA inputs (three wire plug type - white & red (sound) and yellow (video)). EyeTV200 does a fine job.
I also use our Canon GL2 to pass the video through the camera via firewire into my Intel iMac. I find EyeTV 200 easier (and I can watch and record TV!) while at work! (WaaHOO!)
This is for the analog signal. TEh EyeTV 500 is for
digital cable.

How can I display all records as a end user?

It is a .cfm but only displays 15 records at a time, I was wondering if there is a tag or way to have it display all 300 something records at once? My ultimate goal is to get just the full table into a excel spreadsheet while retaining the HTML formatting so the links still work.
My thought is that the state has set it up this way to only display a set number of records at a time, the data is not private or protected, I am simply seeking a easier way to access it in aggregate.

I think your best hope is to ask the author of the CFM whether they provide any web service that can get you that data when you call it. like.

There's a chance they may be regulating performance on the resultset, and don't want to return that many records at a time, pagination or not.

How to delete the double records connected to one or more than one tables in SQL 2008?

Can anyone please help me with the SQL query. I Im having a table called People with columns names: personno., lastname, firstname and so on. The personno. is having duplicate records,so all the duplicate records i have written with "double" in
the beginning of the numbers. I tried deleting these double records but they are linked to one or more than one tables. I have to find out, all the tables blocking the deleting of double person. And then create select statements which creates update statements
in order to replace the current id of double person with substitute id. (The personno. is in the form of id's in the database)

You should not append "double" in the personno. When we append it will not be able to join or relate to other table. Keep the id as it is and use another field(STATUS) to mark as duplicate. Also we will require another field(PRIMARYID) against
those duplicate rows i.e the main or the primary personno.
