Recording a VO in Soundtrack

Help! I'm trying a record a VO and am having trouble. First off, I've been using FCP, disabling the video track, to record my scratch tracks. I would much rather be using Soundtrack Pro for this, due to the much greater audio capabilities, but can't get my system to work. My setup is:
Intensity Pro card with RCA audio plugs routed In and Out to the Tape Input and Output on my Mackie 1202 mixer to create the loop. My mic is plugged into the XLR input on the top of the mixer, channel 3. Again, I have no problems doing this in FCP, but Soundtrack does like me.
So, I hear my VO on the monitor speakers but it won't come into Soundtracks meters. When I go to arm the record on the Track and click record on the Transport controls, no audio levels come through.
What am I doing wrong? Can anyone step me through.

Hi Matt,
From your original description of your set-up it sounds as thought you have the In's & Outs of the intensity card patched to the In's & Outs of the Mackie mixer. This set-up can be fine providing you have routed a send & return between the Mackie & the Mac. You could bypass the send & return by sending the master output of the Mackie to the line in on the Intensity & sending the line out of the Intensity to the line in on the Mackie mixer.
Providing you have the routing correct, with the intensity & Soundtrack Pro you can only record on to tracks 1 & 2. There are some 3rd party cards that will you to record 8 or more tracks into Soundtrack Pro, however for what you want to do the intensity card should be fine.
The 1st thing you want to verify is that the trim on the Mike in on the Mackie is set to an adequate level & the the Master out on the Mackie is displaying a good level. in other words, the input on track 3 of the Mackie is routed to the Master output & that signal is patched from the Master out of the Mackie to the RCA input on the Intensity card. The recording input in Soundtrack Pro is to Line in Intensity Pro. Then you press the record button on the track you wish to record on ( this should be either track 1 or 2). At this point you are in record pause mode & you should see levels on recording meter in Soundtrack Pro.
If this doesn't do it, then there is still something wrong in the routing. Patching & routing signals can sometimes be trying. I have a small hand held test tone generator made by Fostex (model TT-15) that runs off a 9 volt battery, that I patch into various points in the routing of audio gear & I sent in a 1000 Hz tone to verify that the signal being received & that one or more pieces of equipment in the path is not malfunctioning. The tone is also useful for making sure that all the meters are calibrated to a common reference.
All the best.

  • Recording Vinyls with USB, Soundtrack limits max level to 0 db visually

    Hello,
I am recording some vinyl records into Soundtrack Pro with a turntable that has a USB out. Sound quality and everything are good, but I can never seem to get recording levels above 0 db. The turntable has a gain knob and even if I turn it all the way up, soundtrack stops the entering levels from going above 0 dbs.
Plus, is it possible to see the horizontal track waveform above 0 dbs max? I would like to see if soundtrack is clipping or cutting my tracks beyond 0 dbs.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you. See that's the funny thing, no matter how I record it, SoundtrackPro doesn't allow it to surpass the 0 db. I imagine that it has a limiter that compresses it when it gets near 0 dbs.
But after the recording, I can lift it in the mixer up to +6 db...and it doesn't sound distorted to me at all (no cutting or rasping), matter of fact it sounds better (louder = better).
I even did a test where I took the peak beats (originally below or at 0) and raised them up 6dbs and exported it and you couldn't hear distortion. However when I raised the track fader +6 and the master +6 to get a +12 mix...then it was distorted.
I think they have the +6 in the meters so you can see when you've added to much gain after recording-using library effects; and in the track faders as a quick and easy way to add up to 6 dbs of gain with out having to apply a gain...whew!
When you say the "peak indicator" what exactly are you referring to? Where is that located? Are you referring to the little square above each fader in the mixer? where it puts the highest dbs reached? It changes red when you go beyond 0 dbs.
So what would you suggest I do? Record my tracks with a -3 db estimated peak to be safe? Normalize after recording? What's the best sounding and safest method?
    Thanks so much again.

  • Recording voice over to Soundtrack Pro

I am trying to record some dialogue for a short film and am looking at the following hardware:
Behringer Xenyx 1002B mixer (I need something with battery power for mobility)
    Behringer UCA222 USB audio interface
I am using Soundtrack Pro 3.0.1
Has anyone used this setup? Will STP detect and accept what the ACA222 spits out?
    Is there a cheaper option?
    Any help is appreciated.

Maybe I didn't understand your question. Are you wanting to mix multiple mics down to one audio signal to record into STP on one track via the analogue audio input on your computer? If that's the case then any mixer should work. I use a USB XLR mic input to feed a mic straight into the USB input on my Macbook pro. I use it for both simple production recording and VoiceOver and ADR recording back at my studio. For multiple mics I believe I could plug in multiple USB adapters, but I will typically use my Edirol R4 for when things get more complicated or I need to be very mobile. If you're mixing more than two mics, then wouldn't any mixer work? If you're looking for a mixing control surface, then your options are limited to a handful of options. I use the Euphonix MC Mix. I'm looking for a box to input (not mix) maybe four mics (boom and three lavs) and feed them via USB or preferably Firewire into STP to record onto separate tracks. The reviews I've read are very mixed. If you or anyone else has a suggestion for this please post it.

  • Recording homemade edited movie soundtrack onto a CD?

I recorded some birdsong with my video camera, loaded them into iMovie then sent them to Garageband to edit. Having edited them I now need to record them onto a CD but GB has sent the file to iTunes as a movie clip. How do I get the soundtrack onto a CD please?
I need this for this evening so I'm panicking a bit here!
    Thanks,
    wippitwalker

Thanks for your reply, Keith, I must admit I'm struggling here & have to go out now but I'll try again when I get home later tonight. Whilst I needed it tonight for a rehearsal I still have a couple more days to play with it before I need it for sound effects for a Show. When I tried opening the file in Quicktime (I think I did it right) I got the message the movie could not be opened error 1409.
    Thanks again,
    Carol.

  • Recording analog directly into SoundTrack Pro.

    A) Can I record from an analog device (i.e. cassette tape recorder, stereo amplfier, etc.) into Sound Track Pro on my MacBook Pro? B) Do I hook the analog device up to the the MacBook Pro via 1/8th-inch Miniplug and the audio line in port? C) If not, what should I do?

  • Recording Cassette Tape - Dolby B & C  Question

    Hi,
I am recording speaking voice from a cassette tape that was recorded without Dolby.
I have experimented using Dolby B & C on my tape deck, as I play the cassette, recording it into a Soundtrack Pro project. This reduces the tape hiss quite nicely and does not seem to affect the speaking voice frequency range (80 - 1100 Hz).
The one thing I did notice is that Dolby C seems to "pump" a little, probably due to more of the "ambient" sound (tape hiss) being removed from the pauses.
The Dolby B example seemed to be the best.
I have tried various EQ Effects to reduce the hiss after recording and the result has not been very good.
Of course, after adjusting the amplitude, applying Compressor and Limiter, some of the hiss is made more audible. But, this seems to be just what is going to happen with noise.
Has anyone else done something similar and can offer some suggestions?
    Thanks, Ken

Did you try STP's noise reduction? It does a pretty good thing. Strong equalization does remove the noise, but also clearness and detail in sound. (High frequencies in a voice can easily reach 2000 Hz). Dolby playback on a non-dolby recording is like using a preset filter, I would only EQ manually, to have more control. With Noise reduction software, you don't have to filter out all high frequencies anymore to get rid of noise.
To use noise reduction in STP:
Open a soundfile in the editor. Click and drag over the wavevorm to create a selection of nothing/noise. Click Process > Set noise print, then undo the selection by clicking once on the wavevorm. Click Process > Reduce noise. In the Popup window you can make adjustments. Play around a little, and you'll be amazed of what it can do..

  • Soundtrack Pro clips to final cut

I have a number of sound clips that were recorded and edited in Soundtrack Pro 3.0 that I now need to export to Final Cut.  I know I have done this in the past, I thought I just used Export to WAVE files. However, it is not working this time.
I don't see any info on this in the manual - everything is about bringing Final Cut files into Soundtrack and not the other way around.

Export to AIFF at 48kHz 16 Bit.

  • Repost from soundtrack pro forum: advice needed on how to master a dj mix.

i posted the info below on the soundtrack pro forum and someone suggested i use waveburner to master my dj mix after it's been recorded:
when i record a mix in soundtrack pro, it's 1 long song. sometimes certain parts of the mix come in at a lower volume than other parts because some records or songs aren't as loud as the previous song that it was mixed out of.
how can i bring up the volume on the lower parts and make them equally as loud as the other songs? or, how do i level out the volume without making the mix sound worse?
any advice on getting the EQs and other settings right would be appreciated.
if anything's not clear, please let me know.

no, i have not. would waveburner be more appropriate for what i want to do post-mix?
    if so, could you elaborate?
    thanks for your response.

  • Distorted audio when trying to record simple VO tracks

I'm running my Heil PR-40 mic through an Alesis USB output mixer. I have my input settings as USB Audio Codec in my record preference settings. When I monitor through headphones (connected to mixer) my output signal is clean as a bell.
When I playback my recorded VO tracks in Soundtrack, the audio is totally distorted with clicks, pops and whatever - totally unusable. My VU settings during record are actually a bit low, so peaking is not the problem. I have never been successful at getting good mic audio into my Macs. What am I missing?
Running Soundtrack Pro 2 on an Intel 24" iMac with 2 gig ram and dual core, OS 10.4.1
    Help!

  • Something has gone wrong inside my Soundtrack Pro and I cannot figure it out.

So I can record with any other program on my Mac Pro, including the voiceover inside FCP, but cannot get a clean recording from Soundtrack Pro.
Everything sounds like this - https://rapidshare.com/files/4143174674/Track%201%20Recording%20232.aif
I thought it might have something to do with sample rates, but didn't notice anyhting.
I was using a Shure SM89 shotgun mic recording some family members commentating on old family film. I was going into a Behringer 1202 mixer, and then out into my Mac Pro from the line-in. I assume I cannot fix these recording, and it was my fualt as I had my headphones pluged into my mixer and not into the computer.
Now anything I record in Soundtrack Pro sounds like this, although it records fine in other programs.
    Any suggestions?

It is an analog mixer, and I have the main outs going to RCAs and then those paired down into a stereo mini jack going into my Mac Pro.
I actually have not messed with any setting in the program in a year or so, and it was working fine for that time. I recently updated to OSX 10.6 from 10.5, and I am wondering if that may have something to do with it?
Like I said this was working fine for the past year or so, and after that update I can no longer record anything usable in Soundtrack pro, all the audio sounds like the sample I provided.
That being said, I can open FCP7 and use the voiceover tool to record audio with the exact same set-up and it works perfectly fine, so for the meantime that is what I have been doing, and worst case scenario my MacBook Pro also and The FCP Studio installed on it, and I could always record to Soundtrack Pro through that.

  • Metronome and Effects while recording

I am trying to record some songs into Soundtrack Pro and would like to know if there is a metronome to keep time. I cannot find a drum track that fits the recording but still want it timed out to a beat.
Also, when I record my electric guitar, is there anyway to make the effects "live?" And by that, can I have it play back the effects on the track I am currently playing?
    Thanks

Am I not doing something to be able to hear the effects as I am playing them live through SoundtrackPro?
Garage Band does do this and I cannot get STP to do it.
I have searched this post but so far nothing.
    WHY ???
    This is getting very frustrating.

  • Can't find Microphone in Audio Hardware

    Hi guys,
I'm desperate to record a voiceover for a film and am struggling to find my mic + preamp in my audio hardware list.
I am using an M-Audio Nova plugged into a CME Mtraix X preamp (as the mic needs phantom power) and can't seem to find a tutorial anywhere for how to solve my predicament.
I arm the track and press record but volume is shown on the meter. In the audio harware options I have what I believe are the 4 default settings. I may be forced to having to export to record a voiceover in SOundtrack and then export it back to Premiere, a long arduous project i hate.
I hope you can save me!
    Any help greatly appreciated,
    Jon

It might help if you would list all of your Edit>Preferences>Audio Hardware settings, including the ASIO settings.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Edit] While you are at this, please list (screen-cap will be great) your OS's Audio/Sounds settings and any settings in any Audio console programs, that you might have.

  • Adding voice channels to a trunkgroup

    I have this:
    controller T1 2/0
    framing esf
    linecode b8zs
    pri-group timeslots 1-24
description Connection to Switch T1 2
    controller T1 2/1
    framing esf
    linecode b8zs
    pri-group timeslots 1-24
description Conecction to the switch T1 18
It happens that sometimes the T1 2/0 is full so I would like to direct the overflow traffic to the T1 2/1.
I was thinking on using something like:
    controller T1 2/0
    framing esf
    linecode b8zs
    cablelength short 133
    pri-group timeslots 1-24
    trunk-group alpha timeslots 1-23
description Connection to Switch T1 2
    controller T1 2/1
    framing esf
    linecode b8zs
    cablelength short 133
    pri-group timeslots 1-24
    trunk-group alpha tiemslots 1-6
    trunk group beta timeslots 7-23
description Conecction to the switch T1 18
And at the dial-peers use the trunkgroup alpha in the one I like 29 channels and trunkgroup beta in the one that will remain with 16 channels.
    Will this work?
    Any comment will be apperciated.
    Regards

    This is my recommendation.
Step 1) Create your Keynote presentation.
Step 2) Record your speaking part (separately) with an audio recording program.
I recommend Audacity. It's a great free application. You can download Audacity from www.sorceforge.com among other places. You'll also want to get the Audacity LIB file that is needed to export your audio recording to .mp3.
    3) From the Keynote Inspector, under the Document tab, go to the audio section and add your new voice recording file to the Soundtrack.
    4) From Keynote, go to File, Record Slideshow.
While the audio plays, click through your slides. This is getting the slide change time down.
    5) From Keynote, go to File, Export. Make sure to have the following settings:
    Playback Uses: Recorded Timing
Include audio (sound files, movie audio): NOT SELECTED
Include the slideshow soundtrack: NOT SELECTED
    Include the slideshow recording: SELECTED!!!
Click next and your Keynote presentation should export to a .mov file (keep in mind, this .mov file has no audio. we'll take care of that in the last steps).
6)Open the new .mov Keynote presentation in Quicktime Pro.
    7) Open the original .mp3 sound file in Quicktime Pro.
    8) Select All of the .mp3 file and then click CTRL + C to copy it.
    9) Go back to the .mov Keynote file and Select All. Then go up to Edit > Add to Movie.
This adds your sound and movie file together.
    10) Finally click on File > Save As. Select, Save As A Self-Contained Movie and you're done.
    I Hope This Helps!
