Recording application sound

I want to make a captivate recording of a multimedia
application.
It works fine to record the movie-elements in the
application, but i also want to record the application sound.
As a work around, I now put my microphone in fron of a
loudspeaker. The result is not to bad, but it would be much better
If I could record the application sound electronically into
Captivate. Is this possible? How?

Hi Paul,
Unfortunately this isn't really any thing else that you can
using Captivate to capture the audio. I've used the old sticking
the microphone in front of the speaker from some projects in past.
If volume of the recorded audio is a problem then you could
probably improve on this using an audio editing application such as
Adobe
Soundbooth (Beta 2) or
Adobe Audition.
Failing that, could you always contact the developers and can them
if they could provide you with the application sounds.

Mark

  • External Hard Drive and Audio Recording Application

Hi, hope everyone is doing well today. I'm new to this forum but I have been occasionally browsing it from time to time and find it very useful. So I figured I would post a couple questions that I have.
First of all I would like to tell you all excatly what I want to do with my computer. Currently I am trying to optimize my computer for the Audio Recording Application I have *Cubase SX 3* I recently just upgraded my RAM from 512 KB to 1.5 GB. My next purchased is most definitaly going to be an external hard drive, which leads me to my first question.
    1. If someone could recomend me an external hard drive that is abosolutly amazing for audio recording and such around $150. I would ONLY be using the drive to save my audio files. Definitaly needs to be firewire also.
    2. Next question is. I've heard of people booting from their external hard drives which has nothing but there OS and there audio recording application. That way when they boot it up they don't have processes running "Behind the scenes" and taking up some processor power. Is this true? If so, how would you going about doing this and what would I need?
    3. If anybody else that is reading this is like me and does alot of audio editing on their iMac G5 computer if you could give me some tips in optimizing the performance of the computer in order to get the most out of it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks ahead of time everyone.

Hard drives are pretty much the same. 7200 rpm are obviously a bit faster than 5400rpm. Why Firewire? USB 2 is about the same speed as standard Firewire 400, but the drives are cheaper.

OS processes are going to be running in the background regardless of which disk the OS is on, that's what an OS does! If you don't want more processes simply make sure you don't have any other apps open. I don't know Cubase, but a G5 will handle video editing along with background tasks no problem, and video editing generally involves far more data manipulation than just sound, even if you're doing multiple tracks.
You can easily install the OS on an external hard drive using your original system install disk. Simply connect the drive and choose that as the destination in the installer. To boot from that you would choose it in System preferences/Startup Disk. You could minimise that system by deleting other applications from that drive's Applications folder, turning off internet connections, disabling all widgets etc, but as long as you only have Cubase open it shouldn't make too much difference.

There's not really much else to optimise. Modern Macs are not like computers of old, and OS X is a very modern system, not requiring the type of disk optimisation etc that there used to be.

  • Captivate 4 Automatic Recording does not record application

Windows 7 64bit, Captivate 4.01. Run as Administrator. Create Project>Software Simulation>Record Application - Microsoft Excel 2010. Automatic Recording selected - mode doesn't matter, but Demonstration and Assessment checked. Start recording with red button. All settings default. After lots of moving around, typing, clicking, etc. in window, I can't stop recording using End key - I have to click on the CP icon in the Notification Area icon to stop recording. The resulting project is a single slide without any of the actions recorded. To repeat - I did start Captivate by right clicking on the desktop icon and selecting Run as Administrator.
Anyone resolve this issue? I did try searching the forum before posting, but maybe it isn't IE9 compatible as I got 0 results - even when searcing for "Captivate 4 Windows 7"

Captivate 4 CAN sometimes work fine on Windows 7 64bit systems.  It does on mine, but not all users report this success.
Before you go and buy Cp 5.5 you might as well try the different compatibility settings to see if one of them will work for you.
Another thing to be aware of is that Captivate doesn't always capture every single screen event for some programs.  So with the project you found resulted in a single slide, were you hearing the camera shutter sound at regular intervals?  If not, it may be simply that Captivate wasn't "seeing" the events on screen and you might have needed to do more manual captures to get everything.

  • Recording The Sound/Audio

When I use iMovie 09 to make a video it doesn't record the sound and i know for a fact the built in microphone works. What do I need to do to enable it to record the sound again while I'm recording my videos?

    Hi Life93,
What you describe would be possible by recording your video, then removing the audio from it and adding audio from GarageBand once the video is in iMovie (I presume here that you are using iMovie for your video production. Other applications may need different methods.)
See this thread on how to remove the audio from a clip in iMovie -

  • Cannot record ingame sound with glc (-git)

I have a problem with recording ingame sound with some games with glc (well, glc-git). glc says, it can record sound from games, if they use alsa (or sdl and forcing sdl to use alsa). As long as I don't use pulseaudio, this shouldn't be a problem. But for some games, I can't get the sound recording to work. The 2 at the moment are:
    FTL
    Amnesia: The Dark Descent
I usually get a message like this:
    [ 1.46s alsa_hook error ] 0xa8a8170: unsupported audio format 0x0e
    [ 1.46s alsa_hook error ] 0xa8a8170: can't extract hardware configuration: Operation not supported (95)
I can record the game, but not the audio. If someone can help or test it, if it works for him, that might be nice. Or if someone knows a workaround or so. Or if someone can confirm, that there is no audio recording for those 2 games (but I actually don't wanna hear it... :-) ).
Also there are plenty of games, I got the audio recording to work with. You can see it in my youtube-channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ChemBroTronNo1

doorknob60 wrote:Do you use 64 bit? I don't have a copy of Amnesia downloaded right now, but if Amnesia is a 32 bit binary game, and you use 64 bit, you need to make sure you have the proper 32 bit libraries. lib32-glc will probably be enough.
That's not the issue, the problem is that some games are firing 32-bit float audio (0x0e type as indicated in the error) into ALSA through whatever means, and the standard GLC only supports 16, 24 and 32bit signed int audio. My fork above adds very rudimentary support for float.

  • Why are system and application sound files appearing in itunes?

Suddenly, over 900 system and application sound files, each about a second or 2 long, have appeared in my iPhone 4S music player. They've also appeared in my iTunes on my desktop iMac. Not sure whether they appeared on the computer first or on the phone first. I can't figure out why they appeared there or how to get rid of them (without also removing them from the system and applications which, of course, I don't want to do).
I searched through the discussions here and found several other people complaining about the same thing, going back a couple of years, but no solutions offered. I hope someone can offer a clue.

Thanks for the suggestions and help. While the cause of this problem is still obscure, we've managed, with an Apple tech's help, to remove the system/application sound files from both the iPhone and iTunes. We used Time Machine to backtrack to the point at which the sound files first appeared in the iTunes folder, then moved back one more day and restored the iTunes Media folder (where all the music was stored) and 2 iTunes files: iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml (we could also have simply restored the entire iTunes folder with the same effect). Then we synced the iPhone.
As for the cause, that's still a puzzle. From Time Machine, we were able to determine that the files were added between midnight and 12:47 AM on a particular day, but that computer was not in use at that time (the user was asleep in bed, and the only other person in the house at the time was me -- and I don't touch that computer).

  • Logic recognizes my Edirol UA-20, sound comes through but when I hit record no sound gets recorded! The volume levels are showing sound, why won't it record? ?????u

Why can I hear sound on the track coming through but when I hit record it turns red but doesn't record any sound?

How are you monitoring the sound coming from Logic?
Did you set up the audio preferences for input and output in Logic.. to reflect your setup?

  • Is it possible record the sound without using server  ?

    hi
i need to record the sound(.mp3) from microphone in flash, i want to save in a local system from a web page and without using the sever like fms red5 etc. any idea or solution ?
    is it possibe?
    if so how ?

It is no different thing than Flash or Flex apart from the libraries/Classes which will help you interact with the Native OS.
Few additional features AIR will provide are
    File handling,
    Database connectivity,
Native OS API's like accessing Clipboard,
    Native dragging,

Adobe AIR classes are listed with the AIR icon. in the list. You can read more about adobe AIR on Adobe's site

  • Does iPhone record when sound is manually turned off via the external side switch?

Does iPhone record when sound is manually turned off via the external side switch? Enquiring minds want to know.

Are you asking if the phone logs when someone mutes it? No, I don't believe so. Or, are you asking if audio recording apps still record when the phone is muted? Why don't you use the included VoiceMemo app and test it?
    Best of luck.

  • For guitar, vocals, keyboard/drumpad controller, what is the best audio interface to use/record quality sound in Logic, Mainstage, Garageband, etc. (lowbudget)?

So many to choose from. im really just trying to record clean sounding electric guitar tracks now vocals in the future and keyboard/drumpad controller near future..(irrelevant but thought i should mention im in the market for a keyboard and drumpad controller combo hopefully will be usb or something) but i need a quality audio interface to use with Logic Pro 9 and all the stuff that comes with it (mainstage, etc) and also Garageband. I have heard so many different reviews about this or that but all in all i dont think i can afford an apogee except maybe the apogee One but it at 249 or whatever i feel like i could get alot more bang for my buck. Ive heard alot of good things about m-audio gear but i heard mixed reviews as well. If someone can just tell me what is the best interface in the 100-200$ range for the needs ive listed above...Any responses or advice greatly apprecitated.
    Thanks

    hi mm
there are so many different sound cards out there these days it seems - ill just say that one that i got alot of use out of was the tascam 122 (http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-122.html)
it has 2 decent phantom powered XLR inputs, some midi stuff, a place to plug a guitar into and some nice big knobs.
the next level would be something with more ins (8 or 10) and probably firewire, and also around $400 i think.
oh, and your computer should be more than sufficient to handle what you want to do.

I don't see anyplace in the program where you are actually saving a file to disk. You have the output of SI Read being filtered and graphed and also back out to the sound card, but that's it. The only Snd Write Wave File function is outside the loop and will only write an existing file to a new location.

  • [Solved] ffmpeg records no sound

I use the following string to record a video with ffmpeg:
    ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i hw:0,0 -f x11grab -r 30 -s 1920x1080 -i :0.0 -acodec pcm_s16le -vcodec libx264 -preset ultrafast -threads 8 output.mkv
I only have alsa, no PulseAudio or OSS stuff.
I've been trying everything I managed to find through google but nothing seems to work. General sound output works, I can listen to music and do all my stuff like I'm used to, I just can't get ffmpeg to record my sound.

    I'm using the latest ffmpeg-git with x264-git. (I compiled it correctly, so I don't think it's a build issue.)
I tried using -i default, -i sysdefault and -i plughw:0,0 instead of -i hw:0,0. I also tried various hw:0,1 etc. combinations, because I was fustrated and didn't know how to continue. I also tried recording only the sound, without the video, but nothing works at all.
Only the video runs perfectly fine. Please help.

Recording sound directly while playing something works with the following .asoundrc script:
    pcm.!default
    type file
    slave.pcm
    type plug
    slave.pcm
    type hw
    card 0
    device 0
    subdevice -1
    file /dev/shm/audio.raw
    format raw
I then convert the raw file with ffmpeg from RAM. This is extremely annoying though, because the audio file isn't synced to the video. But IT WORKS. I want a solution with ffmpeg though, I have gathered more information, if somebody is interested:

Is there any way to add Item 'IEC958 Default PCM' to numid=28,iface=MIXER,name='Input Source'? I tried recording from 'Line' but it doesn't work.
Am I doing something wrong? I'm still digging mad for a solution, and only the .asoundrc script works this far.
