Recording audio into FCP

Hello, a quick question / request for advice.
I'm a novice FCP user and I have a Sony HDRXR105E HD handycam camcorder. The camcorder does not appear to have an input jack for a microphone.
I think that means that I would have to buy a separate digital recording device, then record the audio during (say) an interview, and then sync the audio to the video on FCP.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good digital audio recorder that works well with FCP?
Thanks

Double System Sound is becoming more and more of a topic with the DSLR HD capable cameras, but they do actually have a TRS-mini input. There are many workable things you can use from MiniDisk to MP3 recorders and more. I've sync'd MiniDisk recordings by the old and simple method of a loud (and visual) clap - which you must do for every take, and in some instances I use flash or any other thing possible to sync up my recording.
If you continue to use a "double" or second system for recording sound, remember that an important aspect of making that audio file ready for easy use in FCP is to save it (convert it) to 48k if it is not already. Most devices that are not expensive pro devices record in 44.1k (44,100 samples each second) so you have to export that file from an audio application that is capable of saving it at 48,000 a second.

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

  • Recording audio into logic?

hello, how can you record audio straight into logic express 7,i have an audio interface, just dont know how to control logic to do this.i know how to record it onto my hard drive, but just thought you might be able to record it into logic ,like you would recording midi, into a track etc..thats if you can do it at all ?
    hope this makes sense.
    thanx

When you record the track segment you are creating is saved on your hard drive. It is not data that is saved as part the song file itself. It is more like a link. Each segment is separate so you are going to create a new one each time you record a part of your song. Logic wants to place them into a common folder.
Logic needs to have a path to those files so it can access them for playback. It is best to have them in the song file folder rather than somewhere else on your hard drive. When you follow through with setting the audio path Logic will create the necessary folders for the different types of files it will need to access.
When you create a new song file it does not have that audio path. So, you either set up the link/path after you create a new song file, or when you try to record your first track segment, Logic will ask you to set that path before recording.
    Hope that helps.

  • Nightmare recording audio into premiere pro with Mbox 2 Mini  Mac OSX

I've adjusted buffer settings, power settings, and so on, not to mention watched two Premiere Pro tutorials on recording audio directly into Premiere that barely still apply, but adobe finds relevant enough to suggest.  I am using a Digidesign Mbox 2 Mini and an ElectroVoice RE20 Microphone.  If I'm lucky I get a clean track of audio for about 45 seconds before the audio begins to pop and crack.  In reading on Avid's forums this is due to a buffer issue, but I've since changed my buffer to every setting and still keep wasting time.  Does anyone have any experience recording directly into premiere pro cc 2014?, Anyone with an Mbox 2 Mini?, Do you have an audio box that seems to work perfectly with CC 2014?  If you have any insight on any of those questions, please comment below.
I've tried everything I could find and read about online, but at this point I have to give up before I waste anymore time.  I've switched usb ports, maybe is a USB 3.0 with 2.0 device?, I switched power locations, plugs, protectors, and so on, even USB cables.... blahhh
    Specs:
    Premiere Pro CC 2014 8.1
2012 Macbook Pro (Non-Retina), 16GB of Ram, dual internal SSD, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
    OSX 10.8.5
Mbox 2 Mini, Firmware 1.4, latest drivers.

    Hi AbzZilla,
I was looking up this post and found you've a similar problem...
I was having the non-responsiveness with the above configurations in 'LE 7.4 & 7.4.2c (Mac-only), but I have now installed Pro Tools LE 8.
Unfortunately I still can't get the MBOX2 to work with the Mac mini 2, but the MBOX2 USB status alights now [i.e. it's very bright and now works] on the MBP 17" ...all with Mac OS X 10.5.6! In all previous Pro Tools versions it confirms support for Pro Tools and the MBox, with the Mac mini:
    http://archive.digidesign.com/compato/osx/os.cfm
So I too am 'stumped' as this is the brand new computer that I wanted the software to be operable on. I've swapped the USB cables (to check if it was a failed cable) and it looks like either a firmware clash or a USB-port power issue? I've also tried non-powered USB hubs... as it could be the later issue? So when I find my powered USB hub I'll let you know, ...if there's a change?
Until then... I Iook forward to further posts in this thread!
    Thanks for kicking-off the discussion.
    'Regards, ;-R

  • Recording audio into  logic from a rewire application

Im using logic 8, but im about to have 9.Is there a way to record audio in from a rewire application, in my case Reason 4.Im able to run sound through it,and out of the main mix. But cant figure out how to record onto a track for later use and manipulation.Any help would be great. Thanks

In your mixer: options> new Aux. channel strip, set input to Reason channel (#,#). In Reason don't use the 14:2 mixer, but hook everything up to the hardware interface. If you do go through the 14:2 everything in Reason will be on one track in Logic (Mix L/R in the Reason input menu).
Then in Logic, either change the ouput of that channel, or set up a send, to a bus (say 1).
Then create an Audio track in the arrange window, and set the input to bus 1.
That gives you a track with the Reason part recorded as an audio file.

  • How do I import a clip then record audio into it?

    Hi,
I need help figuring out the process and/or the keywords involved to locate help.
    Here's my thinking:
Step 1 Import a clip from Snap Pro X screencast.
Step 2 then while video is playing, record audio using the internal microphone onto it.
Step 3 save as one file.
Sort of a layering idea. Laying audio on top of a screencast after the fact.
System: iMovie 10.0.5, Snap Pro X 2.5.4, MacBook Air and iMac OS 10.9.5
    TIA

  • USB input, recording audio into Quicktime (snow lep) becomes a .Mov prob..

    Hello,
I am using a USB interface that (similar to iMIC) input and the sound comes in fine, records fine, plays in itunes (drag and drop into it)... but it will NOT play on iphone!
How do I change the ".mov" format of quicktime to be whatever the ipod likes?
I am clicking "record new audio" in the file dropdown of QT, but it automatically does it as a .mov anyway.
    Help? thanks

You need to convert the video to a format that the iPhone understands. Here is an Apple tutorial on how to covert a video for the iPod. Instead of picking the iPod format from the drop down menu you pick the iPhone.
This only works if you brought Quicktime Pro. You can Buy Quicktime Pro From the Apple store. If you do decide to buy Quicktime Pro you need to also have Quicktime 7 installed. If you don't have Quicktime 7 already installed in your Utilities folder here is how you can install it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678
At this time there is no Quicktime Pro for Quicktime X, only for Quicktime 7.
(Open up iTunes and look under the Advance tab and see if there is a conversion for the iPhone. If so, you can also convert videos using iTunes. You might need Quicktime Pro to be able to do the conversion in iTunes.)

  • AVCHD and 5.1 audio into FCP 6.01?

    Hi-
I'm trying to import and transfer AVCHD video and the associated 5.1 audio from a Panasonic HDC-SD1 AVCHD camcorder into Final Cut. The picture comes in fine, but when I try to import the audio, the Log and Transfer window downmixes the audio to stereo, and there's no way to get the program to import discrete tracks. I've tried ProRes and the Kona codec, no go either way. Any ideas?

The audio is already encoded in 5.1 AC3 Dolby Digital.
You can't edit the encoded stream in FCP or Soundtrack.
You need to import the audio and decode to 5 channel aiff files
using something such as the free mAC3dec
then add the 5 separate files to the timeline.
Figuring out what track is which channel may be difficult.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/mac3dec/
Of course you will lose quality because Dolby Digital is highly compressed
and is meant only as a delivery format, not an editing format.

  • Why does the letter P show up when i try to record audio into Logic Pro and no audio is audible ?!

Can anyone pleaes help as I have occured this problem today and sent hours trying to fix it and not had any luck !?!?
I always record in audio by press "R" on the channel strip but today for some odd reason the letter "P" shows up and no audio is audiable ?
Can anyone tell me what's going on ............!?!?
"When I try to record in some audio and press "R" it chnages to the letter "P" and no audio is coming through ?!?"

This is because you have Punch on the fly enabled under Options (top menu)>Audio>Punch on the Fly.... signified by the letter P instead of the letter R

  • Can't record audio into logic

Hi guys. This is my first post here. I am new to Logic and Macs in general, so bear with me. Lol. I am trying to record bass, guitar, vocals as well as some intrument samples from Logic, but when I click the record enable button, I don't see any audio coming in. This is odd, because I can record in Soundtrack Pro, so there must be a signal getting to the computer from my Presonus Firebox. One other strange thing that is happening is that I can play audio from my two Dynaudio BM5As no problem, but when I play a sample from Ultra Beat, it plays back through the built-in speakers on my Mac. Also, when I go to play a software instrument, it doesn't play, either through the monitors or the computer. Sorry if this is a bit confusing, but I don't know how else to put it. Any thoughts? I assume it is just my own lack of technical knowledge and that the solution will be found in some sort of settings window. Any and all help appreciated.
    -Spencer

Make sure your Firebox is the selected Driver in Logic's Audio Preferences.

  • How Do I Record Audio Into iphone 5

I'm looking for a way to do line in recoding through the headphone jack on an iPhone 5. I've downloaded FiRe 2 for this purpose but there are no settings to switch from the internal mic to an external mic. Their support has offered no solutions. I've also considered buying White Recorder and Pro Audio to Go but if I keep buying apps to test, I will have spent enough money to buy a dedicated recorder. I have the appropriate TRRS mic adapter cable from Sescom. My goal is to use the iPhone a s a field recorder for video shoots instead of purchasing a Zoom or Tascam recorder. I would also like to record live music events in stereo as well but the video application is most pressing now.
    Thanks.
    dp

My iPhone seems to automatically switch to an external mic when one is plugged in.  The issue I find is that using the headphone port only allows mono recording because there is only one contact for the mic there (excluding the ground)  To get stereo recording, you need to use a digital input, which goes through the dock/lightning connector.  I don't know of any that are out for the lightning connector yet, but there are several options for using the dock connector.

  • Record video into finalcut  and audio multitrack into logic in sync

    Hi,
I'm an experienced logic user but new to video.
What is the best way to record video and audio multitrack!! synchronously?
Can I record video direct to my harddisc and synchronously record audio into logic or soundtrack pro? We have two separate macs available.
-Can I connect finalcut with logic via rewire or do I need additional sync hardware?
-How can I start record simultaneously for finalcut and logic?
    -Do I need finalcut pro?
-Can I record video and audio directly and simultaneously into soundtrack pro or finalcut?
I currently work with a cutter who uses canopus but assign each video take to each audio take is so time consuming. There must be a better solution for video production.
    Any feedback appreciated,
    Thanks Eddie

I may be wrong about this, but AFAIK…
Can I record video direct to my harddisc and synchronously record audio into logic or soundtrack pro?
    No.
-Can I connect finalcut with logic via rewire or do I need additional sync hardware?
    FCP is not ReWire compatible.
-How can I start record simultaneously for finalcut and logic?
    You can not.
    -Do I need finalcut pro?
Maybe, but I can't say one way or the other. What is your goal with video?
-Can I record video and audio directly and simultaneously into soundtrack pro or finalcut?
You can record directly into FCP, either via FW or SDI (if you have supporting hardware)
I currently work with a cutter who uses canopus but assign each video take to each audio take is so time consuming. There must be a better solution for video production.
Not familiar with Canopus, so I can't comment.
    Any feedback appreciated,
Some editors find the term "cutter" to be an unfair characterization of what they do. We do waaaaay more than just cut out the bad takes!

  • How to correctly import .mts into FCP with full 5.1 audio

Well, I've found a couple of solutions to this so far. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a stickie, but it might be useful to others as well.
Getting the audio from new consumer video cameras, for example my Sony HandyCam, which have 1080p video, and 5.1 surround sound audio into FCP can be a bit tricky. The hard part is the audio. FCP will import the camera's .mts files fine using Log and Transfer, but the audio is mixed down to stereo.
This solution was posted over at Ken Story's FCP boards:
    http://www.shedworx.com/hd-information/surround-sound
Although I haven't tried it, it looks very good.
I actually tried the following method, using Parallels (i.e., some form of Windows):
I used TSMuxer in Windows to demux the .mts files. I then used BeLight which is a front end GUI for BeSweet **(you have to download both, and drag both the BeSweet application and the azid.dll file into the BeLight folder before you run). This separates the resulting .ac3 file into 6 mono .wav files.
I then just imported them back into FCP and all was well.
The advantage of this method is that it's free, but the major disadvantage is that it only runs in Windows, so you have to have a PC or emulator. So next time, I'll likely give VoltaicHD a spin.
Hope this helps anyone trying to do the full import to FCP

Oooof! Does this mean that we have to do this procedure, using VoltaicHD, for each and every one of the ~1750 clips with 5.1 surround I have from my trip to China? Perhaps I misunderstood, but it looked like this process was a one-clip-at-a-time process?

  • Unable to record audio

I am trying to record audio into Logic through a electro-acoustic guitar and AKG microphone, which are both plugged into my Saffire 6 interface. Everytime I set up a new audio track and select the 'R' record button, a loud static noise plays through my monitors. You can see that the interface is picking up a signal from the guitar but all you can hear is the static.
When I increase the gain on the instrument channel on my interface, the noise stays at the same level. But when I increase the volume of the monitors or the volume of the mixer channel in Logic the noise gets louder. This makes me think that all the cables are fine but it is something to do with a setting in Logic.
The mixer channel in logic always looks like this when audio recording is enabled:
I've read on some other forums that it might be to do with the buffer size - I've tried changing this but the problem seems to persist. I also read that it might have something to do with setting the midi clocks in the synchronization tab but there wasn't enough information explaining how to do this.
My midi setup currently looks like this:
I've had this problem for ages now and can't find a way around it....

    Couple of more questions:
Does the Focusrite have a feature called zero latency monitoring, also called direct monitoring? If so make sure it is turned off and not used. The Saffire has a "Mixer" knob, do you have that in the correct position. Do you have the latest drivers?  2.6 it looks like.
    http://www.focusrite.com/products/audio_interfaces/saffire_6_usb/downloads/
Does the microphone channel work ok? Have you tried reversing them.
What happens to that channel if the guitar is not plugged in, is there any noise?
Are you using a standard 2-conductor guitar cable, or is it by chance a three conductor stereo cable? It should be just a standard guitar cable.
It there anything else being used on the USB bus, are you plugged into a USB hub or directly into the Mac?
Speaking of which, wht Mac and OS?
