Recording delay

Hey, I was just wondering if anybody wrestles with the recording delay setting in the audio prefs as much as I have to--like every time I fire up logic.
It's stable from project to project, but once I quit logic and start with a fresh launch (after a delicious lunch) I need to do the ol' record-the-click trick through my interface and adjust for it.
Just wondering. In my set up I need to do a negative delay anywhere from -20 to -160.
(In crazy hopes that the driver/application communication would be perfected, I checked out the online manual for Logic 9... and the recording delay preference is still there. boo.)

I have tried the count to the zero crossing method.
i have tried iS's use the anchor method. I have made sure the levels were the same, and that the pans, etc are equal.
I am totally convienced that there is a flaw in logic. a huge, huge flaw with OSX and the way it gives feedback to the system. I don't know how or why, but FW is bunk on Apple computers.
What do I do to make this click, cancel *** ever you want to call it. how about WORK!!!!
somebody, anybody this is a plead for help.. ichat, ichat video, VNC whatever it takes to get it working. I don't know if I am at fault. I might be, but I need someone else to try on my machine, or at least listen while i do it..
    PLEASE~!~!!!!!

I gotta say FP, sometimes I find it hard to follow exactly what you're getting at, but usually I can figure it out. I understand that the people posting here come from different cultures, different backgrounds and all may have different ways of using english.
but the one thing I would say is, try and start out your posts with a clearer intro on exactly what it is you're talking about. I knew what you meant cos you've been discussing the recording delay issue in other threads, and as you said it's been a topic here lately. but if you make a bit more of an effort to explain exactly what you're doing and what you've been trying out, you'll get a lot more users able to jump right in and offer advice.
sometimes I open threads here, and when there's just a sort of confused question followed by a lot of ranting about how it doesn't work but it should and therefore it's all a load of sh*t, I just think forget it.. too much hard work. I'm not at all saying that your posts are like this, but sometimes it takes a bit more effort than it should to understand where you're coming from.
I'm only saying this to help you out, you post here frequently and it's obvious you do a lot of work and are running a pretty serious logic setup.. so I'm more than happy to get in there and help you figure things out when I can.
btw, are you sure there isn't a level of delay in your path that you aren't taking into account, to do with the RME, or the fact that you're using rewire?

so i set audio recoding delay 2550 samples but
At the final export ( export all tracks ( Command + shift + E ) ......all other waves which from Audio units are ok but .......
that motif wave which i record already using 2550 samples .........is not in proper position it just delayed .....i dont know why its happens ........if  i set 0 delay it just come front and starts before the bar .......... i dont know why its happens

I'm having the same problem. After figuring out the negative recording delay number that's accurate (which logic's manual says you should rarely ever have to adjust from zero) it worked but I had to adjust it for different sessions by the same process. Very time consuming. Is this a (completely unacceptable) bug?! Will there be a fix coming soon? I keep reading about people having this problem. I could have sworn the 80's were over...

  • Buffer size and recording delay

    Hi
I use a Focusrite Saffire LE audio interface, and in my core audio window the buffer size is currently set at 256 and there is a recording delay of 28ms. I don't think I've ever altered these settings since I started to use Logic. I don't know if this is related, but I do notice a slight delay when I monitor what I'm recording -- a slight delay, for example, between my voice (as I'm recording it) through the headphones and my "direct" voice.
Anyway, are these settings OK, or should they be altered for optimum performance?

256 samples Buffer size will always give you a noticable amount of latency. If you use Software Monitoring you should try setting your Buffer to 64 samples. With the recording delay slider in the preferences->Audio you can compensate for the latency (of course not in realtime) so that the Audio will be placed exactly there, where it should hae been recorded at. In your case set it to a -value. A loopback test (check the link below) will clarify the exact amount of Latency occuring on your system.

  • Why does recording delay change?

so yesterday i recorded vox and acoustic gtr totally fine. then i went to add bass today and i get a huge recording lag in placement of recorded audio. what changed this? everythings been stable for months. do i really have to go through all this recording delay calculation trouble just to have it work right again? seems totally ridiculous.
    cory

Did anything at all change between yesterday and today? Did you add any latency inducing plug-ins (or are you using any currently)?
As well, updating your profile, as far as equipment goes, might help zero in on your problem.

  • How much recording delay are FireFace 800 users using?

I thought when I first hooked up my FF a couple of weeks ago that I had compensated accurately for my recording delay sufficiently, but now it still seems that audio is still being printed slightly early. I currently have my recording delay at +8 at a 64 sample buffer @24/48. What's everyone else running at?

Yeah, when I noticed this I was tracking an electric guitar while monitoring through GuitarRig. I'm going to see what happens by turning off PDC. I never thought of that until you mentioned plug-in's. Thanks!

  • Odd stuff - recording delay - automatic channel Strip changes

Recently I upgraded my interface from a MOTU 828MKII, to a Metric Halo 2882. I also upgraded from Logic 8 to 9. The problem is, I did this in the middle of a project. This project was/is just a test of a whole new upgrade to my home studio including some preamps/mics/interface/acoustic treatment/etc. Up to this point I mainly recorded my own stuff (5yrs), no big deal. But I'm thinking of moving this into a part time gig. So I asked a some friends if they'd be interested in free recording as guinea pigs.
The first day (Saturday) we tracked drums into the MOTU on Logic 8, as my Metric Halo interface hadn't arrived yet. Everything went good. That Monday, my Metric Halo arrived. I switched out the MOTU, and had the 2882 up and running by Wednesday. Thursday, I installed Logic 9 and updated to 9.1. I had all weekend to work though some of the new stuff, and it all sounded good.
By Monday I had the guitar/singer come by to lay down the rhythm guitar. When we recorded it, with the same settings as in the previous session, although with Logic 8 and a Motu interface, the guitar was around 246 samples late. I adjusted the Recording Delay ahead 246 samples, and it made it slower. I adjusted back 246, still not right. So we called the session.
I've scoured forums, and the only info I can find is plugin latency, and I/O buffer settings. I never had any issue with the MOTU as far as recording delay goes. I had latency issues, but nothing that actually recorded. It was my understanding that, the I/O buffer only affects the monitoring latency, everything "goes to tape" correctly though. I've spent the last 4-5 days trying to figure this out. If I start a new project with the 2882, everything syncs up great, no delay at all. But if I try to add to any project that was started with the MOTU, and Logic 8, I get a recorded delay.
The frustrating part of this is, last night, I updated Logic to 9.1.1, and recorded a loopback click. It worked fine. No delay at all. I tested a bass through the same recording chain I used before, and it was perfect too. I'm not sure if this was a fix in the new update, or I have some other instability thing going on. Any Ideas there?
Also, after updating last night I had a weird problem with plugins that were disabled, suddenly re-engaging. It seemed as though when I would do any changes in the MIO Console, I would come back to Logic, and random plugins would be re-enabled. I'll check tonight if this is repeatable, but last night it was a bother. I also had a Focusrite LiquiMix running at the same time. Maybe this was causing a problem. It did seem to only affect the channel strips that the LiquidMix inserts were on.
    Thanks,
    Erik

Thanks very much; I'm still perplexed though. You're right, the "mono->stereo" plug-ins yield stereo effects for the guitar; but I'm referring to the pre-assembled "sets" of plug-ins that are accessed by clicking on the word "inserts" (above the various slots for plug-ins). When you click on this word, all sorts of effects-sets are offered: for drums, vocals, pianos, guitars, etc. I'm referring to one for "electric guitar" (under "distorted guitar") called "Angus on SG + MS 1959" (though this is true of the other effects in this same category for electric guitar). Here's why things don't make sense to me: 1) since this effects-set ("Angus...") works just fine if it's applied AFTER I've recorded the guitar dry, why should it NOT work when I'm recording with the effect? I.e., I don't need a special double guitar plug for my Firepod for the effect to work on the signal it HAS recorded; so why should the special double plug be necessary WHILE recording? Meanwhile, 2) given that this is a GUITAR effect (Angus Young playing his Gibson SG through a 1959 Marshall Stack), and guitars always have mono output, then how can it be that Logic, by design, should require users to buy a special stereo plug when using effect-sets specifically designed for guitar? .... That's why I'm perplexed. I do think your two suggestions will work; but it just seems impossible to me that Logic is actually designed to work in this way -- at least not on purpose. On the other hand, I'm a newbie, and I may be missing something that's obvious. Sure would appreciate hearing whether it seems to people that there's a problem with my set-up (or with Logic), or whether the physical stereo-plug solution is actually a well-known practice that I am simply not familiar with. Many thanks!
You have recorded only one chanel on a stereo track.
Use a second input on your firepod or use mono ->
stereo plugins on a mono track to hear them in stereo.

  • Recording Delay feature

I'm sorry about posting this in Logic Pro 7, but this pertains to Logic Pro 6.4 and the 'Recording Delay' feature in the preferences. How does this actually work? Is it trial and error or is there a method. I cannot find anything written about it nor does anyone know how it works in my local area. I'm using a PowerBook G4, 1.25 GHz with 1GB of ram. I have problems on Playback with the tracks not coming out "tight" even though there is no perceptible delay during recording. This can happen with just a few tracks of guitars and a basic rhythm track based off the metronome click and NO effects etc added. The buffer size can be as low as 128 and there is no real improvement. My card is the Echo Layla 24 connected via the PCM/CIA slot. It has no adjustments for latency, just in Logic. I have 'Software Monitoring' checked ON. I guess I'm wondering if this recording delay feature would help or is it a sound card issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Otakar,
I'll try to explain what's going on as briefly as possible, and then get to your situation, "I have a feeling that I'm doing something wrong because I cannot find anything to measure.
If your audio card has something called "hardware monitoring", to be very basic about it, it would sort of like a wire jumpering the audio input to the audio output. This would let you instantly hear -- from the output -- whatever's coming into the input.
But you don't have hardware monitoring on your audio card. Most of us don't. But what we do have is software monitoring. Think about this: the very word "software" implies that the computer has to do something (run a process, execute instructions, etc.) in order to pass incoming audio to an output so you can monitor it.
Now, in general, a computer can only do one thing at a time. Think about this... as you're recording audio in Logic, the computer also has to perform thousands of other functions: the screen has to update to reflect the position of the SPL in the Arrange window, the waveform of the audio you're recording has to be calculated and displayed, the numbers in the measure/beats counter have to increment, and so on. And all this time it has to keep recording audio and not miss a single sample of it.
And if you have software monitoring switched on, well, there's yet one more thing the computer has to do. So to break it down, audio comes in to your interface. The computer records the audio as samples. But in order to provide provide monitoring, the computer has to "read" the samples all over again -- AFTER it's been recorded -- and then send it to one of the outputs of your audio interface so you can monitor it.
Now of course, it seems like the computer is doing all these things at once, but really, it's not. It carries out instructions to do these things one step at a time, at blindlingly fast speed so you think it's doing more than one thing at a time!
For reasons I won't get into, the process or recording the audio samples takes priority over everything else, especially when it has to record 44,100 or 48,000 samples every second! Re-reading the audio and passing it back to an output -- software monitoring -- is one of the processes that takes a back seat in the overall "order of operations". This means that when software monitoring is on, it's going to be delayed because it doesn't have the highest priority in the list of instructions.
    This is what causes latency.
And "latency" is just a fancy word for "delay".
So you're always going to have some amount of latency when dealing with a software monitoring situation. The actual amount is determined by the buffer size setting. You want to set this to the smallest possible number that allows audio recording and playback (plus plug-in performance) to be happen flawlessly. And the amount of latency is directly proportional to how large or small you set this number.
If you need, say, a buffer size of 128 to get your system to function properly, the downside is that your software monitoring latency may be unacceptably high. But if you lower the buffer size to, say, 64, your system might not play back (or even record) audio properly.
The only way around this is to use a hardware mixer for monitoring.
FINALLY... to your situation: if you're getting silence when you put the original and re-recorded click out-of-phase with one another, your recording delay setting is correct!!!
    Hope this helps.

  • A Problem With Recording: Delay Between Tra

I recently purchased an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro to replace my ailing Audigy 2 Platinum from a few years back. I've been trying to do some home recording (namely with Sony's Acid Pro 5.0) and I've been noticing some delay between tracks when I record.
For example, I will record one track, and then record a second track, playing along to exactally what I hear. When the second track mixes down, there is an offset between the two tracks on the order of two or three tenths of a second. This offset produces a noticible doubling effect, and requires me to go in and move the audio track around so that it plays properly.
I've tried other programs (Audacity and n-Tracks Studio) so I figure it's not something wrong with the program. My computer is new, it's running an Athlon 64 3400+, with over a gig of ram, so I can't imagine it's a problem with my computer.
Anybody have any thoughts or experience with problems like this?

    Latency issue.
If you can select ASIO drivers (audio settings) on your software then use it and set latency on ASIO panel to ~ 5 ms.

  • Recording Delay Problems with Scarlett 8i6

When recording through a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6, everything sounds normal but on playback, the recorded audio lags behind by about a half beat.
Focusrite says it's an Apple problem. Apple says it's a Focusrite problem and offer nothing beyond that.
After several reboots and disconnecting/reconnecting the interface, the problem seems to have self-corrected but my confidence is not high.
Is there a more concrete and permanent fix for this issue?
    Thanks

OK, maybe this is something... I shut everything down last night, then started it all up again later.
The delay came back... and it's a pretty major delay. Tried again this morning and I still have the same problem.
So, I tried disconnecting the 8i6, started Logic but did not open a project. Then I plugged in the Scarlett and opened a project. Tried a loopback recording and it looks OK. I'll need to try it a few more times to see if it's repeatable but, even if it is, it seems like something is pretty sloppy about all of this. More as it develops

  • Record delay

I just started using logic studio although I have used logic for more than 20 years. When i put the program in record, there was a delay in the starting of the recording. i had to wait almost a minute before the program would start recording. i am using an external usb drive to record my audio. there is no problem reading info from this drive but going into record, i can see the drive searching. Can anyone help me with this

Make sure the drive is formatted OSX Extended with Journaling off.
If you purchased a complete USB drive it may be PC Fat32 or NTFS format, that will cause the problem you've described.

  • Outboard re-recording delay

Hi, I'm running some tracks out of logic through some outboard compressors and back in. Naturally their is a delay caused by this so I'm having to realign the tracks visualy. Is there a way to measure the delay between the sent signal and the recieved and to compensate? i.e. outb oard delay compensation.
    Thanks,
    D

    http://www.collective.co.uk/expertsleepers/latencyfixer.html
You'll have to determine the latency manually, which is easy enough to do with a loop back. Set up a click track, send it out to the outboard processor, and record the input on another track. Then see how many samples late the click is. The answer is your latency (measured, of course, in samples). Report this to the plug-in and you're set...unless you're using Apple's FW CoreAudio driver, in which case the latency fluctuates randomly.
Keep in mind that this is (AFAIK) only good at a constant buffer setting, so if you change from, say 64 samples for tracking to 1024 samples for mixing (a wise thing to do), then you may need to redo the latency test.
    Hope this helps.
