Recording device for podcasts

Hi.  I've got a Marantz PMD660 digital recorder that I want to use to make podcasts, but I DON'T know what to use to port in the phone conversation from my BB Curve.
Has anyone here done this before with a BB phone?
Thanks
Craig

  • Recording Device for ipod Touch 2G?

Hi, Does anyone know if there are any recording devices available for the ipod Touch 2G. I know there are heaps of apps, but my friend has an iTalk attachment (is really cool) for her ipod nano, and it doesn't work on the touch. I'm a journalist and keep having to borrow dictaphones from my colleagues. Any tips?
    Thanks!!

  • Recording conversations for podcast

    Hi everyone,
I want to record interviews using Skype and eventually put on my website as well as for podcasts. I have the latest version of Mac OS and Skype.
My priority is, ease of use (installation, changing any settings--apple and other apps).
What apps will I use (Garage Band, Quick Time) and which ones are easiest to use.
Does anyone know, if me and the other person have Skype, can the other person use the mic on their computer, or do they have to have a headset w/mic or use their phone?
Of course would perfer free apps, but if it's significantly easier to pay $20 or so than would rather do that.
Thanks so much and Happy New Year.

Your best bet is probably Skype Call Recorder - I've not tried it but it is designed to do what you want. When you've made your recording you can use GarageBand or an audio editor such as Audacity or Amadeus Light to edit it and make an mp3 file.
As to the actual recording, I get quite good quality off the internal mics on my Macs, but your would need to experiment. A decent mic would be better but good ones aren't cheap: remember that the audio input on Macs does not work with microphones directly - you need a preamplifier, a mixer, or to use a USB-connected mic.
Headset microphones tend to be poor quality, and you can get noise if the brush against clothing or the face. However both ends should definitely use headphones to hear each other, or you will get echoes.
If you want to make a podcast this page, which gives basic information, may be of help:

  • Recording devices for FCExpress

I'm beginning a project using FCExpress. What kind of recording devices can I use on location that will not empty my pockets but give me good sound recordings? I don't want to buy a mike and carry my laptop around. Any ideas? Anything would help.

As Al said, "Use your camera!"
When you are in the appropriate place shoot any old video. It doesn't matter what, as it is only the sound you are concerned with.
All good pro cameramen do this to get ambient sounds in case the editor later needs some audio to fill in gaps.
If you don't want to carry your camera, get one of those tiny Digital Voice Recorders (or Dictation Machines). They are about the size of a mobile phone and can take hours of recording using flash memory. If you get a good Olympus model for about £70 you will be able to plug in an external mike if you don't want to use the built-in ones.
The quality is excellent. Recently I saw a video where I thought the introducer was using a radio-microphone. Of course he wasn't - it was one of these devices.

  • Recording iChat Audio for Podcast

I'm struggling to find a solution for recording audio for podcast interviews and am thinking that perhaps there's an easy answer I'm overlooking.
I have no problem connecting to an interview subject using iChat, however, my voice levels are only 50 to 75 percent as strong as the subject's. This same situation occurs when I'm using Skype. I have all of my input levels set to maximum.
Tests with Ecamm Call Record and Audio Hijack Pro have a similar problem.
Also, is there a way to record audio directly from iChat with these third-party apps?

    Umm, a Pretty problem.
I would first test with several Buddies to get their opinion on how loud you seem to them.
I can turn up my volume but it still requires that I speak as loud as I would in a conversation and face the Mic. If I sit too far back from the mic I get too quiet no matter how I talk.
I find this with people who test with me who confirm they have System Preferences > Sound > Input volume cranked up. (the worst are Australians sitting outside on the veranda for Breakfast and trying to show me the view with a laptop)
As I have two Macs sitting quite close to each other I do get feedback if I connect the two in a Chat so I have to pay attention to the volume setting.
Having said all that if the resultant recording seems too low in Volume at You end I would personally use iMovie 6 to teak the volume up when I spoke - either by Extracting it and cutting it up and increasing those portions or by using the purple and yellow dots to do so.
The Eccam page actually says this...
    Create a Podcast
Conference Recorder makes it easy convert your QuickTime movies into MP3 or AAC format. Simply drag a recorded QuickTime movie to the included "Convert to MP3" or "Convert to AAC" utilities, and let them do the work for you. Additionally, Conference Recorder records each side of the conversation on separate tracks, allowing for easy post-editing. The included "Split Movie Tracks" utility will automatically export each movie track to a separate file.
This would mean that you could turn up the track for your Audio in Quicktime Pro
Launch the file but not Playback
Go to the Window Menu > Show Movie Properties
    Select the Audio Setting tab.
Increase the Volume db on one Audio track and see if it your speech by playing.
Adjust as required (Change track if required).
Save File to save the adjustment.
    Hope this helps.

  • Connecting 2 USB Devices for recording in GarageBand blue yeti and M-Audio Mobil pre. will they both work together one track each?

I Have set my Audio Midi Setup under Audio Devices to Aggregate Devices and selected M-Audio MobilPre USB and Blue Yeti Microphone.
I plugged my MobilPre into one USB port on my MacBook and the Blue Yeti Mic into the other USB on my MacBook. So I have two inputs
and I set each device for OUTPUT as the HeadPhones from the Blue Yeti Mic. I still cannot record the vocals on the blue yeti and the Guitar on the MobilPre
At the same time even though both show the rec button is active on both. What do I need to do to get these to both work recording at the same time?

I'm not sure what you mean by "mixed with audio in Alsamixer". Can you clarify?
With that said, my problem did mysteriously fix itself after some update (presumably to alsa). Unfortunately, I noticed it in passing one day while I was changing the volume of something in pavucontrol, so I don't remember the exact update that caused it to work. But yes, my current setup does work now: I can listen to audio through my DAC and use the Yeti for recording. However, I have found that use of the Yeti crashes Google Hangouts, although it works perfectly in every other program I've tried.
As documentation, here is my current working setup (it is very similar to the above): in PulseAudio, the DAC is set to be a Digital Stereo (IEC958) output. The Yeti (called an 'Integrated Rate Matching Hub' in pavucontrol) is set to be an Analog Stereo Input. In the input devices section, I have the Yeti's volume set to around 58% (-14.31 dB), which is past the base volume a fair ways but produces decent levels for recording. The DAC's volume is set to 100% (0dB gain, the DAC takes care of the level). In alsamixer, I have the mic level for the Yeti set to 40.
Edit: This is a long-time-later edit, but let me say that when you have multiple USB audio devices, what USB hub and in what order they are connected seems to matter a great deal. If you can't get your Blue Yeti to work, try moving it to a different set of USB ports (controlled by a different controller) on your motherboard. This magically fixes the issue for me.

  • 1820m - Using E-DSP Wave for Windows Default Recording Device?

Good Morning! I just ran into an interesting problem. My professional applications all use EMU-ASIO (1820m) and work perfectly fine. But I have this prgram called Jing, that can record short videos of your screen so you can share how-tos, and short training snippets. The problem is that it records audio from the Windows default device for sound recording. Mine is set up as "E-DSP Wave." But a mic plugged into the audio dock does not register any signal in the Windows recording hardware. I'm fairly sure there is a way to do this in PatchMix (Version 2.0) via inserts or something, but I've tried the manual and some trial/error, and can't figure it out.
Can someone give me a clue? This seems like it should be a no-brainer.
    Thanks.
    Ken

Just to add a bit of information to the above, as yet unsolved problem...Windows XP can use the E-DSP Wave just fine for playback! It's only recording that it can't seem to manage. I can select it, but as I said above, the volume control is totally greyed out, and the "test" hardware" function in the "voice recording" window won't register signal from the audio dock. One other thing, I CAN record into Adobe Audition when I select E-DSP Wave from within its audio device window! So sound IS getting into windows through that driver. I just can't figure out why XP won't recognize it.
Again, just hoping someone can give me a clue.
    Thanks.

  • What device for recordi

    Hi everyone,
I'm looking for suggestions and advice from some Creative fans. Personally I've been eyeing the 40 GB Zen Touch and will probably get that as soon as it becomes available (seems like that will be pretty soon) but for a friend of mine it's a little more complicated.
He wants something with excellent audio recording capabilities so that he can record his music practices and concerts and then transfer them to his computer for storage. I was originally looking at mp3 player/usb stick/voice recording devices but he assured me that the recording was more important than small size or mp3 playback.
I then looked at external microphones with "stereo mini-plugs" to ensure a good quality recording but still need something to record onto. Are there any Creative mp3 players with that kind of plug that would be suitable for recording like that?
And on a general note, when it says "voice recording", for example in the case of the Zen Touch, what format does it record in? WAV? probably not directly as an mp3, that would require on the fly compression.

Sorry for the late response, yes on the Korg unit there is a setting to be able to record a microphone directly into the line in jack. There are three settings in total, Line, Mic, and Guitar. The only time you would be able to plug a mic into a line in is if the mic was somehow boosted or amplified by a battery or another source. I know specifically what Sony microphone you are referring to and it will not be useful going into a just a line in input without a mic gain switch.
Mp3 players are great, however for recording, the technology has gotten so good that your friend may even be able to professionally USE some of the tracks he's rehearsing into the Korg. It uses higher end A/D (Analog to Digital) conversion technology.
    Hope that hel
    ps.

  • Cellular Data for Podcasts pop-up - how to get rid of (iOS7)

I am downloading all of my podcasts to my iPhone 4 (iOS7) through iTunes on my iMac. Before iOS7, I did this and listened to them in the Music app - it was all really straightforward. iOS7 forces me to use the Podcast app. I'm still not sure if I'd doing the sync/download from iTunes correctly as sometimes the episodes appear on the phone and sometimes they don't (and I'm the one who usually figures these things out and tells my other family members how to do it), but that's a whole different story.
Because I do not want any podcasts automatically downloaded to the phone, especially over Verizon's network, I turned off Settings -> Podcasts -> Use Cellular Data. I have also turned off Sync Subscriptions.
Whenever I am not on a WiFi network and I unlock my phone while it is in the Podcast app, I get a popup that says:
Cellular Data is Turned Off for "Podcasts"
You can turn on cellular data for this app in Settings.
And I have to "OK" it to make it disappear. It is getting annoying. I know cellular data is off. I did it on purpose.
My goal is to get rid of the popup but I've had no luck yet after tweaking a few settings. I don't know exactly what Sync Subscriptions does, but one educated guess is that as long as I have that off, no podcasts will be downloaded to the phone unless I do so via iTunes on my iMac. Is that correct, and would that allow me to turn on Use Cellular Data (to get rid of the popup)?
    Any other ideas about this?
And if someone can explain all of the different permutations of how to manage Podcasts between iTunes and an iDevice (or even when a computer isn't in the picture), I'm all ears.

None of the tips suggested above worked for me. I still had that infernal message about connecting to the internet. But I have apparently (crossing my fingers) found a solution which works for me.
In the good old days I had iOS6 on my iPhone 5 with iTunes 10. I created a Podcast playlist in iTunes and I could cheerfully listen to it on the Music app driving around Europe (I'm on a UK tariff) with no 3G or wifi.
I now use iOS7 on my iPhone 5, syncing with iTunes 11 on Mavericks. I can now listen to the same Podcast Playlist with the Podcast app, wifi and Cellular Data turned off, Cellular Data and Notifications turned on everywhere and not a trace of the warning message. All the Podcasts play in sequence with no problem. Victory?!
The problem turned out to be in the syncing with iTunes. Although the Podcasts, whether in the Playlist or not, appeared to be syncing, in fact they were not imported fully into the phone. Thus when I selected a Podcast to play, the full file wasn't actually on the phone and so it wanted to stream it.
My solution was achieved by doing the following.
    1. Create Podcast playlist in iTunes and drag some podcasts into it.
    2. Wiith phone connected to iTunes device, highlight the iPhone in the left hand column and swivel the little arrow to expand the list of contents. You can then check the actual contents of each section on the phone. Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts etc.
    3. Hit iPhone in left hand column. Hit Podcasts tab at top of window. Uncheck everything in and out of sight and Apply/Sync to remove all Podcasts from phone.
    4. Hit Podcasts section of expanded iPhone contents list in left hand column. That should be empty. Similarly there should be no sign of the Podcast playlist below it.
    5. Now return to the Podcasts syncing section. Check 'Sync Podcasts'.
    6. Scroll to bottom of page to 'Include Episodes from Playlists' and check the Podcast playlist you created. Apply/Sync.
    7. Now check that the Podcasts in the playlist are in the phone by hitting the Podcast label in the expanded contents list. It should match the contents of the Playlist which should also have appeared in the list of playlists in the phone.
    8. With WiFi and Cellular Data turned off, go to Podcast app and, if you're as lucky as me, you should be able to play any of the Podcasts in the playlist without that infernal message being displayed. Displaying 1 or 2 fingers at your mobile provider is optional!

  • Can I use a MIDI keyboard as an input device for a software instrument?

I have a Casio CTK-2100 that I am currently playing around with in Logic Pro 9. It can record and playback the different instruments fine using MIDI tracks. But I was wondering if it is possible to use the keyboard as an input device for a software instrument instead of the "Step Input Keyboard".
Is it? If so, how do I set it up?

Yes, the terminology can be a bear, many, many years ago when I started using Logic the manuals were written completely by the programmers, while they were quite humorous in places the were also really hard to understand so I learned/realized.. you can't really do anything so wrong it's going to destroy your computer so why not go ahead and experiment. I learned the basics of Logic without a manual, months later when I went back to find some some details I could figure out the manual made a lot more sense.
Logic has been somewhat Appleized but it's not really an Apple program, it was purchased almost as developed as it is now... a lot of the additions a fluff to make it easier to understand for new users while at the same time there are some real improvements.
This is personal opinion: With all of the forums/online tutorials...etc...etc. It seems users are learning (but not understanding) the same things, plus everyone wants to use it right away so nobody takes a deep breath and investigates on their own. Logic is a deep, deep program, while learning don't be afraid to go off on a tangent and explore the program without any other input, it can actually be inspirational. One other thing good about the manual or "Online Help", in looking up a function you will invariably come across a related concept that will provide further insight.
    And..... have fun.

  • No "Enhancements" Tab in Windows 8, Recording Device Properties

Hi, I just bought my HP laptop, a HP ENVY 15-q008TX, Windows 8.1. Whenever I'm using the microphone, I've found that the microphone automatically lowers its volume when it's too loud. It's obvious there's some auto-leveling going on in the background, be it by my audio driver or Windows. I don't want that and it's problematic when I'm recording audio for work.
Searching for answers on the internet gave me these common answers:
    1) Turn off auto-audio adjustment in Skype -- Done. However, the auto-leveling issue I'm facing happens in other software, even when I'm not using Skype. So it's not a Skype issue.
    2) Go to Control Panel > Sound > Select "Do nothing" for communications activity. Done, but issue persists.
    3) Go to Control Panel > Sound > Recording Devices > Properties > Advanced > Unselect "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device". Done, but issue persists.
    4) The last solution I've found is to go to the "Enhancements" tab of Speakers Properties AND Microphone Properties and check "Disable all sound effects". This sounds like a possible solution except that my Windows 8.1 has no Enhancements tab at all for both Speaker and Microphone Properties.
I then tried checking the Beats Audio Control Panel (that's the audio software my laptop came with) which has barely any options.
In the "Listening Experience" tab, it doesn't show any auto-leveling option.
In the "Recording Experience" tab, it asks me to attach audio device when my headset microphone is clearly attached and it's working and detected by my Windows and other software.
So at this point I don't know what to do. I suspect there's some audio software issue going on. Any advice is appreciated.

I do not have any issue connecting a microphone. That connecting error in the screenshot seems to be something wrong with the Beats software itself than any issue between my microphone and the HP laptop.
    To clarify:
    1) My microphone works perfectly and it shows up in Windows Control Panel.
    2) I have used my microphone over Skype with no issues.
    3) I have recorded many audio recordings with my microphone with no issues.
Where I do have an issue with the microphone, as I have outlined in my original ticket, is that there seems to be an autoleveling or loudness equalization going on where any input audio that goes beyond a certain volume will automatically be softened for 10 seconds, before the microphone increases volume again. I have found this issue reported many times in other forums and apparently it's a common issue, and the solution seems to be to disable the loudness equalization in my Speaker/Mic properties in my audio control panel.
The issue here is that I cannot find this option to disable loudness equalization at all in my audio control panel, be it in Windows or in Beats audio panel (as I have cited in my original ticket). I would like some help to know where exactly I can find and disable the loudness equalization option in my computer because it has to be somewhere since it has been operating in the background.
    The manufacturer is Sennheiser.

Well first you need to sync your iPhone 4 with your Mac/PC so that it will transfer all your music, apps, podcasts, etc. Then sync your iPod Touch and the media you selected during the sync should be there on your iPhone. If you have difficulty in transferring media from iPhone to your computer, try softwares like TransCopy. They will help in transferring data from your iphone to your computer. Dont forget to check that all the transferred data is in the iTunes media folder so that the iTunes can locate the files. Link to Transcopy software :

  • Is there a dual video sources workflow anywhere for Podcast Producer 2?

I looked at the standard "dual source" workflow, but the QTZ compositions appear to use output from a plugin rather than direct "video input" patches. I'd love to be able to plug in both a Canopus ADVC-55 firewire codec (to capture PTZ camera image) and an Epiphan USB encoder (to capture whatever XGA signal is being sent to the room projector). Ideally, this would show up with whatever setting was chosen for the dual source workflow (e.g. "Overlay" or "Keynote"). Has anyone worked this out or have an idea as to how to proceed?

The QTZ compositions already expect video as input sources for both primary and secondary source. As far as I know you can use two different video input, but then you will have to you two different bound Macs to control the recording. With Podcast Capture you can't select two connected cameras on one machine. So you will need to bind two machines, start the recording from Podcast Capture and select the remote cameras for each input.
