Recording Digital Audio via Optical Line-in

Hi,
I've been trying for the past hour to record Digital Audio from my XBOX 360 via an Optical Cable, into my MacPro's Optical line-in.
However all I get it huge amounts of noise / static / clicking all of the time.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

I suspect the audio from your XBOX is encoded in surround sound. The Mac will not decode this type of audio directly from the optical in port. You may need to try and change your XBOX preferences to standard stereo.

  • Combined optical digital audio output/analog line out

Combined optical digital audio output/analog line out minijack on the new Mac Pro support 5.1?

Are you asking if it has that?
    http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/
    says:
Combined optical digital audio output/analog line out minijack
    Which means it does.
On all but the earlier Mac Pro models, this has been standard since the iMac G5.
    Mac Pros earlier used SPDIF.
    These are now mini-Toslink.

  • X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro cannot see 5.1 Dolby Digital input via Optical link (mods, please he

X-Fi Fatalty Pro cannot see 5. Dolby Digital input via Optical link. I am pumping my Xbox360 through the Digital I/O dongle and every thing works OK using Dolby Stereo, outputing to my 5. analog speakers. However, it does NOT work when choosing Dolby Digital 5.. My SPDIF tab just says unknown input.
Please help, this is very frustrating...

Ok, for those who also wanted to know the outcome, I though I'd post.
I was told that the dongle cannot decode 5. to analog, but the Dri've Upgrade and the Console Upgrade could (at $80/$80 vs. $5).
    Great.
So what I want to know is this:? what chipset or connection is Creative putting in the Dri've Upgrade and Console Upgrade? It seems to me that the card should be doing the decoding, not the type of optical port. If it's getting the signal, then what is the problem? Is is that the flexijack cannot output/input 5. at all, only stereo?
Anyway, the Digital I/O dongle is going back, the thing is useless for my purposes. While I can hear 360 games fine, DVD's on it default to 5. if they have that type of audio, and there is no way to switch it to stereo; it gives me only silence then.
And mods, nothing in my frustration is with you; you seem to be very helpful and responsi've. I just wish the rest of the company would get on the ball.

  • Digital Audio In to Line Out Not working.

How do you route digital Audio in to Line out?  I have a 2010 Mac Pro, running digital in and have validated it's a good signal.  No sound through the line out.
In the interim, i've used Audio Hijack to route it through the line out with no issue.  I'm confused as to why i must use this 3rd party product to route the audio. Any ideas, this can't possibly be a new problem.
    Thanks!

I've had problems connecting my computer to my cable box as well. Comcast apparently disables some of the functions on its boxes. Call your cable company. It's most likely a problem with your box, not your computer.
Good luck and if you find the problem let me know.

  • Can MacBook Pro output digital audio via usb?

I'd like to output digital audio via usb. Can it be done from iTunes? This would allow me to go directly to my dac and then to my preamp.
    Thanks.

Russell, there are quite a variety of devices that accept digital audio over USB from any mac with a USB port - see http://www.trendsaudio.com/EN/Product/USBAudiodesc.htm for one example.
Try a google on MAC USB Audio OUTPUT any you should pop up some useful options.

  • Does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack? (is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC?

does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack?  If so, is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC then to stereo?

My suggestion to work around this problem would be to hook up an Airport Express. The AE also has an optical out the same as your iMac. As long as your wireless connection is robust enough you should be able to stream from your iMac to your AE and then have the optical cable connect between your AE and your DAC, which then connects to your Integrated Amp/Receiver/Pre-Amp (depending on your system configuration).
I assume because you are using the optical out and connecting to an external DAC that you are looking for a high level of Audio quality ?

  • Recording digital audio from satellite recei

I'm considering the purchase of an Audigy 2 NX. I've found several postings on recording digitally, but I'm still not sure if satellite audio can be recorded. By connecting the optical audio toslink from my satellite receiver to the Audigy 2 NX, can the music stream be digitally captured via the USB connection to the computer without undergoing a conversion to analog? Does the Dish Network (or DirecTV) signal include copy protection bits that prevent this type of recording? Are there any other known issues? Thanks.

I record to a Audigy Platinum ZS through my satellite reciever (DTV-Hughes receiver)and have had no problems with DRM or encrypted bits. I do however have an annoying background hum present. I'm using RCA to a 3.5mm connector to the line-in port with a cable length of about 25'(?)but other than that, usually record at 48khz, 6bit with nice results (Nero Wave Edit)

  • How to enable Surround Sound via Optical line?

Hi, I have been having problems outputting Dolby Digital 5.1 from my Mac to my Panasonic Home Theatre Reciever, When I insert the Optical line with the adaptor, It only gives me the option to send Stereo channels. No options for 5.1/6.1/7.1(Rear/Center)
However, I can use Dolby Pro Logic as another way of Dolby Digital. But I wanted to get actual Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound. I don't want to use more space on my MacBook Pro's HDD. Just to encode another movie/TV episode. (a.k.a Family Guy)
Is there a way I can install AC3 on my MBP?
    I would appreciate everyone's help!

I Found out the problem. When I was hooking everything up, I kept the t.v. on so I can assign audio inputs with the onscreen display. If the T.V. is left on....only stereo outputted. When I turned the t.v. off and with the airport express plugged into AUX, I was able to switch between surround sound settings.
so the moral of the story is, turn off video devices when you just want sound, especially if they are hooked up to the AVR with HDMI.

  • Digital audio-in to line-out?

    Hello all,
I've just got myself a PS3 and am wanting to route the digital audio from my PS3 to the Mac and out to my speakers. I have the optical cable going in the digital-out of the PS3 and in to the digital-in of my Mac Pro. Looking at the Sound preference panel, I'm getting a signal because the input signal is flickering. I can't seem to get any audio out from it though. Digital-in is selected but am having no joy.
I downloaded the demo of Audio Hijack and this works fine - I can get audio from the PS3 to my Mac and out through my speakers, however I'd rather not have to use this software to do a simple task.
Can anyone suggest what I might be missing or not doing? Is there another sound control panel I might need to use to route the audio out?
    Thanks!
    Alastair

When I run AudioHijack Pro and route the audio from digital-in, it works fine. Also, viewing the input page on the sound preference pane, the input level shows activity so I know sound is working. However, I can only route audio using audio hijack pro.

  • Uploading digital audio via camera connector???

I am using a Marantz digital audio recorder for field interviews. It takes a compact flash card, same as a digital camera. I would like to use my 60 Gb iPod Photo as a remote storage: upload the WAV (uncompressed audio) files on my CF card to the iPod, erase the CF card, record more interviews, go home, upload the whole thing to my G5. My Belkin card reader (which works great for photos) doesn't recognize the audio files. Anyone tried the camera connector for this? Any other suggestions? This has got to be possible, no?
    Thanks,
    Nathaniel

Interesting application. Although conceptually the same as backing up photos, I doubt this would work. I've plugged a USB flash drive ("thumbdrive") into my camera connector; the iPod Photo recognized the drive, but reported that it has 0 photos on it and so wouldn't allow any import. The drive has many files on it, but none in the format/directories that a digital camera would place them. Of course, you could always use a PowerBook to copy the files from the CF card with a USB reader, but then you wouldn't need the iPod at all and would have to carry more equipment with you. I doubt that Apple would add general file backup functionality to the iPod software for such a purpose. You could always use the feedback page ( www.apple.com/feedback ) to request such an enhancement, but you won't get a response and I doubt they'd implement it as the camera connector is marketed just for the purpose of uploading and viewing photos.
    Cheers,
    -Sam

  • Recording digital audio from dvr

Having trouble with recording audio from a dvr with a toslink cable connected to digital input on an imac. The resulting audio is high pitch static. Is Garageband capable of processing this audio, or does it have to be run through an amplifier first? Any help is appreciated

GarageBand cannot decode a Dolby Digital signal. You will need to decode it first with an external device (i.e. DVR > Amp > line output from amp > input on Mac)

  • Simultaneous import of video via firewire and audio via in-line audio port

I have a converter that takes the S-video and audio input from my DVR then converts both to DV format, and then outputs via firewire. I hook the firewire up to my G5, open iMovieHD, and the application recognizes that as a camera and imports wonderfully.
Well, the audio comes through with a MAJOR buzz or hum. It's probably the converter, but the buzz/hum is not enjoyable.
So, I removed the audio from the converter, and the video converts wonderfully in iMovie without the audio. I have the audio coming in through my audio line-in.
I start to import my video, and iMovie starts recording the video. But I want to record the line-in audio at the same time. But when I switch to audio to turn on the input from the line-in, the video stops capturing.
When I start to capture audio first, then switch to capture video, then the audio stops capturing.
Is there any way that I can capture the video via firewire for one "track", and my line-in audio for the other "track", and have them play simultaneously in iMovie during capture??
Any help would be appreciated. thanks Adam

    hey there badkitty 42,
i don't think you can do that. it sounds like your issue is electrical. try turning the plug around on each piece of gear in the chain & listen for the buzz. if it's not heard you've found the cause of your ground loop. you can also pick up some of the 3-prong orange or grey electrical adapters from Lowe's or Home Depot to see if you can "lift the ground" to get rid of the buzz. i'd try one on the convertor 1st. one last thing, do you have any flourescent lights in use on the same circuit or in proximity to where you're doing your transcoding? these are notorious for inducing 60Hz hum in audio & video gear.
    good luck.

  • Audio via optical not always working

Recently downloaded several TV series through the iStore. All play through my ATV3 and HDMI OK. My wife uses headphones to listen to the TV and these are powered through our Pioneer amp. The ATV3 is connected to the amp via HDMI and also through a optical to analogue converter, it's this connection the headphones are connected to (Zone 2 in the Pioneer)
Here's the problem - Two of the TV series play OK but the other two just produce a rapid clicking noise in the headphones but the sound is OK through the speakers (HDMI).
Music is OK and all of the other movies etc are also OK
    Any thoughts??

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Have you checked whether these TV shows have surroundsound. If they do you may need to change your "Dolby digital" settings on the Apple TV.

  • Digital audio via USB no longer works since IOS8

    Hi,
I use the "Lightning to USB Camera Adapter" (ref MD821ZM) to connect my iPhone or the iPad to my Bowers and Wilkins speakers MM-1 USB cable.
This allowed to use the B&W internal DAC.
It has worked fine in IOS 7 and it was a fantastic feature and easy to use.
IOS no longer streams the music digitally to the DAC. it just keeps playing the music from the iPhone/ipad internal speakers.
I truly hope this is only a bug and not a feature Apple has voluntarely decided to remove, which would be a shame because it doesn't harm anyone to keep it.
or anyone has a suggestion (app or something)
    thanks,
    BigMat

    b,
We are in business. I charged the iPod via the cigarette lighter (didn't take long). When I plugged it into the computer after charging it I got the familiar ding-dong sound and the iPod updater immediately prompted me to update the software on the iPod (which I did).
After updating, the computer no longer seemed to recognize it. I stopped all the USB devices that were running, one at a time until I finally saw Apple iPod in the list and I stopped that as well and disconnected.
To make a long story short, after rebooting my computer and reconnecting the iPod, iTunes came up as normal and it looks like I'm over this hurdle.
I have no idea why the computer wouldn't recognize the iPod when the battery was dead but suddenly recognizes it after charging it.
My wife says that the iPod had been left plugged into the computer for a long period of time but I'm not sure what that would have done.
At any rate, we're working now and hopefully someone will get some benefit from this thread.
    Thanks again,
    Greg.
