Recording from a DVD

I have movies on DVD's that I created with my old PC using Pinnacle Studio Software. Is there a way to Download these DVD's to my MAC so I can create new movies using Final Cut Express?

Because it's free I'm partial to MPEG Streamclip. It works well. You do have to have the QuickTime MPEG playback component. If you don't already, it's $20 I think.

Can I record from a DVD recorder/player either NTSC or PAL subject matter tranfered to a DVD into iMovie. This is not copyright material, but my own NTSC VHS tapes transfered to DVD. Do I need a converter box? What is the video format? Is this a possibiltity? I only have firewire in to the MAC. How do I do it?

    Hello Alaner,
you don't need a converter box (although it's a possibility) but you can get the video off your DVD on your mac, converting it into something iMovie can handle

Does anyone know of a good freeware or shareware program for recording audio from a DVD into any format?

  • Record audio from a dvd

How can I record a snippet of sound from a dvd playing in the computer?

Thanks. I was hoping there might be something built in, analagous to the screengrab feature. Guess not.
I looked at Versiontracker, and went with "Audio Hijack Pro." For the moment all I want is to grab a few seconds for a ringtone. AHP offers unlimited trial, with the limitation that it introduces some noise on recording over 10 min. Wiretap's trial is 30 days, and I might want to make a new ringtone in 31 days, so AHP is more suitable for my needs.

The free program a52decx takes a DVD and outputs the audio in an .aif file. Search google to find it.

Extremely easy. INstall "WinDVD Creator 2 Platinum for Toshiba" that is on the "Additional Tools & Program" CDs that was provided with your Qosmio.
After installation, reboot. Once you take control again, apply this patch (double click the .ref files)
    http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/updates/windvd-creator-reg/regpatch-xp-na.zip
Now open winDVD Creator 2 and from then on you will figure all out by yourself. (you can select if you want to record from tv, composite or svhs). It will record in .mpg (MPEG2) format, ready to burn on DVD.
    Later,

  • Recording sound directly from a DVD into your computer

Can you record sound directly into your computer from a DVD playing on your computer?

Audio Hijack also creates large files, size-wise. This can be a problem if you are working with putting music on audio cds. Google "ripdifferent" for a site that discusses various methods of legally backing up legally purchased media. The gray area here actually has to do with breaking encryption- under US copyright law, users have always been allowed to make a single back-up (Fair Use) of any recorded media they have purchased. It is possible that media companies are, themselves, in violation of copyright law by making it difficult to make said backups by encrypting their media. Also, copying (ripping, recording, etc.) any DVD in any way would seem to be covered by the warning at the start of all DVDs (including soundtracks), which would include Audio Hijack, for instance. This all came about when the digital revolution made it possible to create exact copies. Back in the day, copying an LP to cassette, for instance, was not considered a problem, because you would lose a generation. BTW, ripping music DVDs can be problematic, as they are mastered differently than are "movies," and some Mac ripping programs have difficulty with them. Proceed cautiously and consider legal ramifications, but also consider retaining YOUR legal rights as well.

  • Recording from DVD

I have two DVDs I want to record footage off - the first is a DVD (made on a pc) of home movies where I want to get rid of some videos (holidays with the now ex-girlfriend!) and make a DVD of the rest (like footage of my Dad who has since died). The second DVD (made on my mac - iMovie and iDVD) is work related - camcorder footage for something where they want the same thing but with a scene or two removed.
Can I record these from my DVDs using Quicktime? Presumably upgrade to Quicktime, put in the DVD and record the movies or save as, as they play?
If not what are my options? I have a dual boot so could resort to windows based software but I'd rather stick with mac if I can.

Your question is the mother of all FAQs here but here it goes again:

  • Recording from CD or DVD

On my G575 is there a way I can record the sound (or part of) of a DVD I am playing?  Thanks in advance.

    hi TonyVella,
You will need a software to record a sound / video from a DVD playback. Try the following:
    1. How to record a DVD using VLC - You can get VLC here.
    2. Recording audio playing on the computer using Audacity - You can get Audacity here.
Let me know if you encounter some problems.
    Cheers

  • Why does th  It is a QuickTime movie from a dvd home recording.

If you are referring to an MOV file stored on a data DVD for playback in the QT (or similar) media player and not a DVD "authored" for commercial DVD device playback, then it sounds like you encoded it incorrectly. Basically DVD devices have a limited data transfer rate and if this rate is lower than the total playback data rate (combined video + audio data rates), then some of the data is not transfered to your computer fast enough for smooth playback in your media player.
I would normally recommend compressing your movie content using the H.264/AAC codecs (most efficient Mac standard codecs) and set the "Optimization" pop-up to the "CD/DVD ROM" setting. This option will "package" the encoded content for playback directly from a DVD player that is compatible with data rate limit you impose for the encode. Another option would be to copy the file from your DVD to your computer drive for playback since hard drive data rate transfer is much greater than that of a DVD player.

  • I am unable to import recording from DVD to iMovie so that I can edit it.

I am unable to import recording from DVD to iMovie so that I can edit it. Any suggestions?

The files on the DVD are MPEG 2 files and need to be converted in order to be usable in iMovie. Streamclip from Squared5 is one option although others are available. Wondershare is one as well. Just Google for mp2 converters and you'll find many.

  • Copy Recording from STB to DVD

I have recorded a treasured program on the STB.  I want to transcribe it for permanent keeping on a DVD.  Is there any way to do so?

You should be able to hookup the output of the DVR into the input of a DVD recorder.
Hit record on the DVD and play on the DVR.
    Very old school.
I haven't tried it yet as I've only had FIOS 6 days.

  • Import audios from VCD, DVD, RealMedia, casette tape, vinyl record, etc.?

    Hello,
Is there a way to record/rip these other sources beside CDs to an iPod Nano? This is for someone who is using one and a Windows XP Media Center SP1 (all updates). He is not a computer expert so he won't know how to convert, pick bitrates, etc. Are there any software products that can rip/record, convert, etc. with ease like Apple products?
    Thank you in advance.

To answer part of your question, one way to record
vinyl is to connect your player (through the Tape out
sockets of your amplifier) to the audio in socket of
your computer. On the computer you'll need audio
editing software to capture and edit the resulting
long file into individual tracks that can be added to
the iTunes Library. There are a number of commercial
programs for this (I use Sound
Studio for the Mac but there are Windows
programs). If want to try out the process first you
could try the open source program Audacity which has
Linux, Mac and Windows versions at this link: Audacity
In addition to the software you'll need RCA to 3.5 mm
audio plug cables to connect the Tape Out sockets of
your amplifier to the audio inputs of your computer.
There's a short guide to recording here: How
to record from vinyl and cassette to a computer
    also from the BBC Copying
    Vinyl Recordings to CD
Thanks. This sounds more complex than I thought it would be. Is there a specific file format that the recordings have to be in? I recall in the past that I had to record as WAV format before even converting to MP3, but that was years ago.
