Recording from analogue cassette

Hi everybody! I'm a computer klutz and wish to record onto my computer from a tape casette, how do I go about it and what equipment do I need?

Hello @8323,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I have read your post on how you are looking to record from an analogue input using recording software. I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
Are you recording audio with an analogue device while your internal microphone is still enabled in the sound manager? Is a howl sound made when you are recording with only the built-in microphone? In the meantime, I recommend following the steps in this document on Resolving microphone problems (Windows 8), which should help enable your system to record a better quality of audio.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

  • Recording from LPs, cassettes, CDs, radio, VCR, etc.

My iMac finally died after six years of service, and I replaced it with a MacBook. I think I have made a mistake in buying a laptop (For one thing, I hate the keyboard), but I'll just have to make the best of it. Anyway, I need to learn how to transfer songs from my cassette/CD player and turntable/radio to my computer. When my iMac worked, I just plugged one end of a cable into the headphone jack on my cassette/turntable, etc. player and the other end into the audio-in port on my iMac and then used SimpleSound to copy the song into my iMac.
How can I now do with my MacBook what I used to do with my iMac, transfer songs from cassettes, LPs, radio, VCR, etc. to my computer?
MacBook, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Take a direct output from whatever it is you want to
capture the sound from. Then on the other end of the
output, plug a 1/8in cable from the device into the
line input on the macbook. Then use GarageBand to
capture the sound. Try that, and if anything is
    unclear, let us know!
    Matt
I vaguely remember something about where to make the connection and what to avoid. When you say "direct" does that include the headphone jack? I know that works and is safe, but I am reluctant to connect my computer to the speaker jack for fear of blowing-out my computer. There is nowhere else to make the connection. One jack is safe, and one isn't. At least that's the way I remember it.

  • Best way to record from analogue camcorder

I have just purchased a TV@nywhere Master card with MSIPVS.  My main aim is to transfer my analogue 8mm video tapes into digital format.  I am currently running MSIPVS on an 800mhz P3 and the quality is OK but I had hoped for better.  I have chosen the 'best' setting for recording which uses Mpeg-2 I think and a total bitrate of about 550.  I would like to try to improve the quality, when I try PAL or NTSC DVD quality instead of the default then the video is very jerky and unusable.
    1.  Can anyone suggest how to optimize my video recording (capture) quality so that I know I am getting as good a result as possible?
    2.  I also have a 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 which I could use, I had originally  thought that the card would provide the high quality video, would using the much faster machine make a difference?
I would appreciate an answer from anyone who has knowledge of these issues.
    Thanks,
    Conley (Cape Town, South Africa)

The jerkiness sounds like you're dropping frames on recording (capturing) due to a computer that is too slow. Also if you want quality video you have to go to MPEG2, bit rate of at least 4000 kilobits per second (500 kilobytes per second)

  • Trying to record from a cassette player or turntable into GarageBand

    Hi,
I have cassettes and LPs that are out of print that I would like to put into digital format so I have them in a form I can use more often. I have a cord with a plug in jack on both ends that I used to record straight from turntables & players with a PC (running from the headphone jack into the microphone jack) but my Mac G5 (power pc) isn't recognizing it when I plug it into the microphone jack on the back.
Any suggestions? Does anyone know what I need to use and where to get it?

There was no choice there for "Line-in" in my Sound Preferences. I did some nosing around and found the Audio MIDI Setup.app in my Utilities and there was a way to switch to "Line-in" there. I did that and it works just fine now.
Thank you for your help - it got me thinking, otherwise I most likely wouldn't have found the answer.

  • How record from portable cassette recorder to Mac

I need to record some conversations from a portable cassette recorder to my iMac 24 intel...I already have mini-stereo cable which fits the cassette recorder but not sure how to connect to iMac.
The cable plug is 3.5mm plug to 3.5mm plug.
    Thanks for any help????

Connect the cable from the recorder to the Mic input on the computer. If there is no Mic input on the computer then you will need a gizmo like the Griffin iMic which will provide a Mic input via one of the computer's USB ports. You will then need some sound recording software that will record sound from a sound input device on the computer. The Griffin iMic comes with an application called Final Vinyl which should do the job. You will need to experiment with sound level to be sure you don't overload the iMic input. Start with very low output level from the recorder until you find the right level of satisfactory recording to the computer.
BTW the above will also work for tape recorders, radios, etc.

  • Recording from Cassette Pla

When recording from a cassette player (into an mp3), is the "line out" from the player the same as the headphone jack or do I need to get a different cassette player.

Lots of times the headphone jack isn't the same level or impedance as a true line level output, so overdriving and distortion may be a problem. Depends on the particular player. A "set-top" type player has line out jacks and would probably sound a lot better in the end. I've gone through changing all my tapes to music CDs and it was well worth it in the end. Now on to the vinyl, then the laser discs.

  • Gaps every 40 seconds when recording from cassette or records

Since purchasing Audition 3.0 some months ago, whenever recording from a cassette or record a blank space is inserted every 40 seconds into the recording. This gap is quite audible when playing the recording back.
I tried to contact support and twice it has not solved the problem...very frustrating...help much appreciated.
This was the major reason for purchasing the software.

Okay, not the results I expected to see, but let's keep hacking.
My next suggestion would be to change the audio device driver being used. Click Edit > Audio Hardware Setup and you should see a drop-down box labeled "Audio Driver." There should be at least 2 drivers listed: Audition 3.0 Windows Sound, and Creative ASIO.
If you are using the Creative ASIO driver, my first recommendation would be to stop. It is notoriously buggy and erratic. I would recommend changing to the Audition 3.0 Windows Sound driver which is not the most powerful driver, but is compatible with almost all hardware out there.
If you were already using this driver, or still experience the recording gaps, my next suggestion would be to visit http://www.asio4all.com/ and download and install the ASIO4ALL driver. It is similar in operation to the Audition driver, but it is based on WDM technology which allows for faster operation and more control over the hardware. Once installed, launch Audition and change the Audio Driver to ASIO4ALL.
If the gaps STILL occur, I think we can probably rule out audio drivers as the cause and move on.
Thanks for your patience as we troubleshoot this!

  • Recording from casse

    hi again
i forgot to ask-when your recording from a cassette tape to a cd how can i get the songs to fit onto a cd as a caseette tape is 90 minates and the cd is only 80 minates?thanks

I believe you can buy CDRs which are 90 minutes, but I'm not sure how well these work.
You can even find 99 minute CDRs. The only problem with the higher capacity CDRs (90+) is that some burners and some players do not support them. I would check http://www.dvdrhelp.com for compatibility of your burner and players before investing in these discs.
Are you using any specific software to enhance the sound quality of the cassette recording before transferring?

  • Recording from an audio cassette into digital format on a Satellite A100

I want to record old music tracks from an audio cassette into mp3 format or similar. I have downloaded Audacity software but don't know if I can actually set up a line-in connection from my cassette player to my Toshiba Satellite A100. Is this possible via the micophone connection? Are there alternative ways of arranging this via one of the USB ports?
If anyone has suggestions I would be interested to read them.
    Thanks
    Ken

    Hello Ken
If you want to do this on professional way you need right stuff for doing this. A friend of mine has bought some package to digitalize old gramophone records. He bought some external device and special software.
I can really do not remember the name of this product but I know it was connected over USB port. The gramophone or, in your case, cassette player must be connected to this external device.
Google little bit around and you will find many good products for these purposes. In my opinion the MIC port is not the best solution.

  • Recording from Cassette Is

<SPAN>I have a up to date PCI Sound Blaster card with mini jacks. Trying to get that actual recording level or default level, when recording line-in from a cassette deck, or more precisely from a receiver that the deck in connected to. I know I have achieved this before and really need help. Now the recording level in hooked to the sound mixer line-in settings. I need the sound coming into the PC to be independent of the PC volume control line-in level. I need the sound coming in and what is being recorded in the PC to be the actual level found on the cassette. Now the problem is when I notch up or down the recording volume of the line-in on the mixer up or down, the recording level does up or down with it. I do not want this.. Please Help

You can't bypass the source (line-in) volume control, but you can bypass the source: Wave and Recording level controls by using Asio4All (or WDM/KS) drivers and some recording software supporting ASIO (or WDM/KS) driver mode.
I don't know the card/software you have there, but ... normally you just
    - set the source (line-in) level to 85&#37;-00&#37;
    - control/set the recording level on "Windows Recording Controls" (or creative mixer app) or on software you're using
    - control the output level w/ master volume control (task bar, playback controls, ct mixer) or w/ Wave output volume control

  • Recording from minidisc to Logic pro 7 via an fa-66

Hi, I'm having issues recording from a sony minidisc deck through my edirol fa-66 to my macbook. I've tried the various anologue inputs on the fa66, the 1/4 jacks and the RCA inputs on the back. With the anologue it's sounds fine until I arm the track to record, then it starts jumping and phasing. Same with the optical input, I press the "Digital sync" on the fa-66, without the "R" record armed it sounds fine, when I arm it the sound starts jumping and a message comes up "saying sample rate not recognised- Sample rate 3674"
The minidisc was recorded from a PA at I assume the satndard rate for mnidisc players of 4100Khz.

If you are using the Digital input (SPDIF) to record from MiniDisc then you are correct that it is 44.1Khz, but are you ensuring that the SPDIF input is set as the master clock? You will need to ensure that is so whilst you record digitally from it.
I can't fanthom why you might be have a problem recording from the analogue outs though. The phasing sound you describe sounds like you are hearing the original sound plus the slightly delayed sound due to software monitoring perhaps?

  • Recording from minidisc to creative player with an x

I tried recording from my?minidisc onto my computer with the x-fi card, through the line-in and mic jacks. When I stop recording and turn off the source, I still have the record volume showing some input even though nothing is on. I?even?tried disconnecting the minidisc from the input jack but the player is still showing some input. This is causing my recording to have a steady interrupting noise every quarter of a second or so. Any ideas where to search for this mysterious input or how to get around this problem.Louis?

  • Recording from line in

I want to transfer audio from a cassette player into Audition.  In Audio Hardware Setup - Edit View, "Release ASIO Driver in Background" is checked.  Under Edit View Ports, it shows Default Input as "[01M] Line In (High Definition... - 1."  When I hit record in Audition (while playing the tape, which I can hear) it records nothing.  I would appreciate ANY help on this.  I'm not a technical wiz, so please try to dumb it down for me.  Thanks!

I assume you are using Audition 3, not an earlier version. You need to tell us which operating system your machine is using and whether you have installed anything like asio4all.
If you are on Audition 3 and Windows 7, and your machine has a jack labelled LIne In (I have come across a machine recently with a Line In option in Windows, but no actual input!), you should select Audition Windows Sound as the input in the Edit->Audio Hardware Setup in Auditioon, then via the Control Panel button check the DirectSound input port is selected..
After this it should just be a matter of setting the recording options correctly in Windows Control Panel, Manage Audio Devices. You should plug something in to the Line Input. This ensures that "Jack Sensing" in the OS isn't disabling something, then via the Recording Tab, ensure that Line in is enabled and selected as the default.
Let us know if this helps.
PS Release asio driver in background should be unchecked, but I don't think it will affect this.
