Recording from iSight - no sound in iMovie 8

Just tried this twice - restarted iMovie just in case.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Welcome to Apple Discussions, kenadianz
You're built-in iSight has no mic, so iMovie 7 ('08) will need to use your iMac's built-in mic or an external one.
If you have added an external mic, be sure you have selected the right mic for use in iMovie. If you have iMovie > View > Audio Skimming disabled and have not dragged the clips up into the edit window, you will not be able to hear anything. Beyond this, there are too many possibilities to try to list. You will need to do some troubleshooting to try to identify what needs to be fixed.
Try doing a voiceover on the clip. If that will not record sound either, check your volume settings.
Also, check your iMovie > Help for recording audio. If you need more help, try the Mac 101: iMovie tutorial to see if that might let you find your problem.
If none of the above helps, try recording audio in iMovie HD 6 to see if your problem is with iMovie 7 only.
Let us know what you find, and, if you need more suggestions, post as many details as you can about what your are doing and what you have tried.

  • HELP: Is it possible to record from multiple video streams using iMovie?

Is it possible to record from multiple video streams using iMovie.
I want to record a presenter on a greenscreen and also his powerpoint slides at the same time and cut from one to other.
Can imovie record from screen and camera at same time?
If so is there a link to somewhere explaining how to do so?
If not, what is the most efficient way to do so, without having to learn a whole complex program?
    Please advise asap.
    Very many thanks

    Alan and Anthony,
Thanks for the quick responses. Unfortunately, there is no backup :(.
I will ask if they get logged into the global zone, but one thing I forgot to mention is that this zone (as are all our non-global zones and the global zone also) are configured for ldap logins.
Assuming that they can even try to login to the global zone, can they even see the directory structure in the non-global zone (sorry, I haven't worked with Zones much thus far) from the global zone?
Also, if they can see the non-global zones directory structure, what should they then try?
Also, I've been searching and I've seen some suggestions of running a "pkgcheck -af" which might restore the directory permissions to what the various packages expect. Assuming that they can get to the point that they can at least log into the zone, is that something that would work?
I'm setting up a new test Solaris box now, with a zone, to try to reproduce the problem. If I can reproduce the problem, I'll post back whether or not I see the same thing.
In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions, please post them.
    Thanks,
    Jim
P.S. In case you're wondering, the box/zone that got messed up was a test/integration zone, and they were in the process of installing some software when this chmod happened.

  • Recording from iSight to iMovie

I try to record from my iSight to my iMovie (6.03) but after a very short time the recording stops. How do I lengthen the time that the camera will record to iMovie?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Maxandshe
    Consider the following:
    0) Your system info shows Mac OS X (10.3.x). Minimum system requirements for iMovie HD 6.0.3 include Mac OS X 10.3.9. Unless you are already using 10.3.9, repair permissions, download and apply the Mac OS X Combined Update 10.3.9, and repair permissions again after the restart that completes the update.
    1) More free disk space may help. Depending on the size of your hard drive, try to start with 20-40GB free when recording video, although you can get by with less. If you need more space, backup files you do not need while recording and delete them from your hard drive to make more space available.
    2) If you notice ANY other performance issues with your iBook, also consider the other suggestions relevant to your 10.3.x Mac from Mac OS X Maintenance.
    3) Make sure no apps other than iMovie are running while you are recording. if Mail is set to check automatically for new email, disable automatic checking while you are recording.
    4) Turn on LOTS of light. Good video quality requires more light than normal room lighting levels.

  • Recording from mic, not sound card

Hi there. Relatively new to Audition so trying to get my head around it!
I'm using Adobe Audition 3.0 and i'm mucking about with it basically to get some experience for my uni project. I'm trying to compile and edit together a collection of audio clips from a number of web streams. I've done it before for a while on a different computer and it worked fine but i'm having trouble doing it right on this occasion.
Basically, it's recording from my microphone rather than what's being played on the computer. I have no idea how to change this. Any help guys?

I bet you've moved to a Vista or Windows 7 machine.
Under pressure from the record companies, the ability to record the Stereo Mix output of you computer has been disabled or removed from many new computers.
You may be lucky and find it's only been disabled on your machine.  If so, then do the following:
    To enable:
    ->> go to Control Panel
    ->> Hardware and Sound
    ->> Manage Audio devices
->> in the Recording tab window right click in the white area away from any devices and from the menu enable "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show disconnected devices"
->> right click on Stereo Mix to get the properties window and in Device usage "Use this device (enable)"
However, there have been many reports in here (you can do a search) that some computer manufacturers are actually removing this ability entirely, again under pressure from the record companies.
This being the case, you might try some software called Virtual Audio Cable:  http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm
You have to pay for it but at least there's a trial version so you can see if it works for you before laying out your money.

  • Recording from isight into imovie during powerpoint slideshow?

I'm setting up a visual perception experiment in which people see objects presented during a powerpoint slideshow. I would like to use my iSight camera to record their faces (their eye movements actually) into iMovie during this task without the iMovie window interrupting the powerpoint presentation. Is this possible?

Although the idea of starting a recording behind the Presentation seesm good.

  • IMovie skips while recording from iSight

I record videos weekly and this recently started happening. After I finish capturing footage from the iSight and play it back I notice that it cuts and skips through the footage. So even though I was recording for 5 minutes only 4 minutes will be there with random bit cut out. It just skips around.
I originally thought my macbook was overheating as it only seemed to happen sometimes and shutting it down for awhile would fix it. But it's happening more and more frequently and now skips in about every 10 seconds of footage.
Any thoughts on things I could try?

I think you need to free up as much hard disk space as possible:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8358.html
I like to keep at least half (no less than one third) of my startup disk free for best OS X and video performance. You can do with less, but, generally, the more space (and RAM) you have, the better things work.

  • High Pitched Noise When Recording From iSight Camera

I apologize if this has been asked before. I did a search on here as well as with Google.
Whenever I record a video clip using the built in iSight camera I notice that there is a constant high-pitched noise embedded in the clip. You don't hear the noise during recording, and otherwise the audio is crystal clear during playback, but I can't seem to figure out what is causing this noise. Video clips I import into iMovie don't have this problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem? How can I prevent this from happening with future recordings?

    Hello obsidianspider
I am sorry to report that you are one of about ten people who have posted here about audio noises during video recordings with MacBooks. I listened to your YouTube clip, and I believe you are hearing something. I can hear the muffled "thumping" of background noises being amplified because there is no voice or other close sound being recorded in your video, but my old ears do not hear anything high pitched in your video (or anywhere else for that matter.)
I am sure Apple is aware of the issue, but with so small a number reporting this issue among thousands of MacBooks sold, I understand why there is not yet a kBase technical article on this subject.
I expect that Apple searches its warranty & repair work for quality issues and trends, but, if you have not (and do not) contact Apple or your retailer for service on this issue, please report your problem via MacBook Feedback so Apple can accurately record the magnitude of this problem. Unlike posting in this user forum, "Feedback" reports go directly to Apple.
We users who post here have found no solution yet, so the problem appears to require professional service for resolution.
However, if you are willing to try a test, please post back and tell us whether video or movie clip recording applications other than Apple's give the same audio noise you hear when using iSight with iMovie. Apple's QuickTime Pro has already been tested and found to exhibit the problem.
If you have access to an external microphone that can be located away from your Mac while you record video, you could also test to see whether you are recording a physical sound coming from your Mac or electronic noise being produced within your Mac's circuitry.
If you want to read the suggestions we have offered for minimizing your audio noise in video recordings, take a look at the suggestions offered in Eemma's thread, which was the first to report this problem. The suggestions for minimizing noise start here:

  • Recording from iSIght

Is there a way I can record the feed from my isight so i can make a movie using it?

    Hi!
You seem to be a real Pro. Perhaps you can tell me (because nobody could till now), if there is any way to record two streams from two firewire cams. I use the broadcaster now, because it makes the right codec and compression in one go. I would love to use it twice or so ...
So do you know a solution for this problem?

  • Voiceover recording from Firewire Soundcard

    Hi All,
I've read most posts concerning voiceover recording but none describe my problem. I would like to use my Alesis firewire IO26 external sound card with a generic microphone. In every single program the device registers and is able to record from the microphone, except in Imovie '11. The device registers but there's no signal.
Is this a bug? Has anyone had this before problem....?
    Thanks

I gues I should've tried this before posting but I just recorded a little voiceover in FCP and that works like charm (same setup).
The reason I'm not using FCP for the entire project is that my mom edited our holiday video in Imovie and I would like to finish it there. Even if i wanted to finish the project in FCP it would not be possible because the timeline will not convert correctly to FCP.
So the problem remains that iMovie will not let me record a voiceover.

  • How can I input data from dvd and VHS to iMovie 6?

I am trying to copy excerpts from a dvd that I recorded from a commercial dvd into iMovie for inclusion in a power point presentation. With the dvd in my super drive and using the help menu procecure of 1. Choose File >Import 2. Select the file you want to import 3. Click Open. When I select the dvd icon on my desktop and click Open, I ged a drop down window for importing files for about 20 seconds, but I never have any files presented in the clips squares on iMovie. I get the same results if I drag the dvd icon to the "drag clips her to build your project" strip. Same thing if I drag the icon to the clips squares. However, I never get any data presented in the areas and the play, reverse, review clips buttons. Same thing happens if I try to transfer the file on the dvd (VIDEO_TS) to the same locations. If I try to transfer the seven sub files individually, I get--The file could not be imported: The file “Hard Drive/Volumes/B04101500/VIDEO_TS/VTS_011.VOB” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -2048--. In all these situations there is no data presented in clips or display, but a gray clip area will go blank. This dvd is about 20 minutes in length and is not broken down into scenes in a menu. I recently upgraded to iMovie 6, so I reloaded the program to no avail. I have previously used iMovie 5, but it will not load as long as '6 is loaded.
Since I also have this data on a VHS tape, I tried to recode it through an ADS Tech Pyro A/V Link converter to enter it into iMovie. In the past this was a simple procedure--connect a VCR player to the converter, connect the converter to the firewire port on the iMac, the system profiler automatically recognizes the converter, start iMovie, then Play on the VCR, and press Import on the File menu. That starts the recording in the past. Now I get another drop down window with an "open" button. However, since there is no software for the Mac with the Pyro A/V, there is nothing to open. Has iMovie 6 made these procedures obsolete?? They have worked in the past.

Hi LesToile - welcome to the forum!
It is not possible to directly import material from a DVD as you are attempting. DVD is MPEG format - iMovie is incompatible with this. In order to use it, you must firstly convert it to DV format. Have a look here:

I have no knowledge of your A/V Link Converter, but if you have a vidcam you can use it to record from VHS to DV tape, and thence into iMovie (there are now problems with the alternative 'pass-through' method using the camera).

Logic is a professional level program, it doesn't do anything for you, nothing is setup ready for the user to start recording, (like Garageband tries to do). You really need to read the manuals and online help to become aquainted with the program at a deeper level. I'm not trying to be rude but it's almost impossible to answer your questions with the little information you've given coupled with your lack of "Logic" knowledge. At this point reading the Getting Started manual and using Logic the online help is a must. You have to do some work to use this program.
No one knows whether you're trying to record MIDI, or Audio tracks or even how you have the keyboard hooked up.

  • Recording via iSight, but alternative sound input?

    Hi everyone,
I have a question that I suspect I know the answer to, but don't want to believe. I am wanting to record something with my iSight, but as the sound quality is too poor for what I want, I would like to record the audio from an external mic, that I use for my podcast - not the iSight mic.
Is there a way to do this? I have searched through these forums and couldn't find an answer, so I apologise if this has come up before.
    Lucas
    iBook Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Definitely the iSight mic. I changed the settings in the system prefs (I hadn't thought of that!), but when recording from the iSight, it was still the iSight mic.
I think the sound quality is exaggerated by the fact I don't have the camera up close, but even when I do, the quality isn't as good as I want. It picks up too much room noise.
It isn't anything important - as I hope to be buying a video camera in the next couple of months. I am just making a couple of sample shows for a vlog I am hoping to do by the end of the year that will supplement my blog on Japanese cooking.

  • Saving a sound recording from internal mic?

Is there a way I could save a sound bit recording from the internal mic that I recorded in iMovie? Or should I use a different program? Thanks!

Extract your audio track and export to QuickTime. This .aiff file can then be converted using iTunes to make a smaller file size.

  • How do you remove the sound from the video's in imovie 08

    hello
just wandering how do you remove the original imported movie sound in imovie 08 ?
so that i can play my own sound track, i know it could be done in 06 ,but i just can find it in 08
    any help would be great

Just wondering ... can you then add other background music ... and not use the audio recorded from the camera at all?
Yes. You can add your own audio either to the background of several clips or "pin" it to a single clip.
