Recording from old vcr

I have a panasonic vcr and want to transfer video tapes onto dvd . Is the best way of doing this by scart from vcr to dvd recorder or is it better to transfer onto my apple imac G5 and then burn onto the dvd. I would prefer to use the G5 route as I think this is more flexible in adding titles etc. if this is recommended can anyone suggest the best piece of kit on the market (not too expensive please!!) in the UK that is is compatible with os x.4.
thanks
chris

Mac OX 10.4.2 using imovie 4.0.2
I too use Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge connecting my VCR-computer. However, since updating to Quicktime 7 I have not been able to import any video. I did notice that in my preferences I have it set to open new projects in NTSC , but when I switch from the editing to import it switches from NTSC to PAL.
Have you ever had this problem? Any recommended fixs?

I am considering the purchase of an
EyeTV HD DVR for HD Cable and Satellite TV for Macintosh (10021040)
I wish to record segments of VHS tapes for use in Macintosh iMovie
My VCR (GE) has only the standard RCA red, white and yellow sets of three, one set for IN and one set for OUT.
Will I be able to hook up and record from this VCR to my Macintosh which is

Looking at the ElGato web site and the pictures of the unit I would say no.
Now, if the goal is to only capture your old videos I would suggest getting the older Elgato EyeTV Hybrid. This unit has the older composit (Red, White, Yellow) imputs as well as a S-video.
I have this and used it to transfer older VHS tapes and it worked very well with an antenna to get off the air broadcasts.
This older unit may be harder to find but it works like a charm.

  • Recording from my VCR or TV onto my mac??

    hello!
i'm a brand new mac user - just bought a macbook pro and LOVE it! i'm officially converted. :0)
so here's my question: i have a lot of stuff on my tivo that i would like to get on to my computer as well as old VHS tapes that i would like to get on my computer but i have no clue how to go about doing it. i know my boss uses some simple cable to connect her VCR to her PC and presses record on some program that came on her PC and presto it's all on the computer - plain and simple. (although i do think i notice a little loss of quality...) but anyhow, i was wondering how i would go about getting all that tivo and VHS stuff on to my mac? a simple way preferably because while i am pretty computer savvy, that was with my PC and like i said i'm new to mac, so... be gentle!
thanks so much in advance! any and all help is appreciated! :0)

    .. so, use his set-up
    if this is no option:
    a) VHS is analogue. has to be 'digitized' before usage in ANY computer (=not just a cable, for sure, you boss' machine has some digitizer inside...) . on this board, many recommendations avail, Canopus $$$ or an eyeTV Hybrid stick $$, which is not only an analogue>>digital device, but a TVreceiver/recorder too ... and cheaper than Canopus ..
do NOT buy those cheapo BestBuy-9.99-usb-stick-thingies! does not work on Mac ..
    b) I'm not familiar with Tivo (US market only..) but I'm pretty sure, it stores internally some .mts (=mpeg transport streams). no idea, how you tell a Tivo to 'share' such recordings, but if you manage to get those .mts to your Mac, you have to convert them, 'cause mts isn't meant for editing.
    you'll find on my website
    https://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/mts-to-mov
a few suggestions, how to convert mts into something editable ..

  • Copy Purchasing Info Record from old client to new client

    HI SAP Expert,
When viewing report through the transaction ME1P, there are PO price history.
I want to copy this history to new client. Does anyone know how to copy it to new client?
    Regards,
    Jalal

all info you see in ME1P is coming from purchasing documents, not just from info records.
if you want the history in a new client, then you would need to migrate the old POs.
for migration you can use LSMW

  • Question re: Editing DVDs made from old VCR tapes

We recently had a relative take some old family VCR tapes and install them on DVDs. Now we want to edit the DVDs. What will we need to edit these. When we open the DVDs there are 2 folders labeled audio TS and Video TS.

    Alternatively:
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, as well as the the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Recording from vcr

My 17 in G4 powerbook has svideo which allows me to watch movies on my tv. Question is, is this svideo conection in and out? I'd like to use it to record from my VCR to digitize some of my older vhs footage.
    Peter

I've converted VHS movies into a digital format. The easiest way to to that is to get an analog to digital converter box. I have an older version of http://desktop.grassvalley.com/products/ADVC55/index.php which works just fine with my Powerbook. They also make additional models with more features. If you have a video camera that allows an RCA input with a Firewire output, I'd guess that would also work.
The easiest way to do it is to use the iMovie application, then use iDvd to create a DVD. If you get into it, you may find some limitations in iMovie and iDvd, in which case Final Cut Express would be a good step up.

  • Trying to transfer from a VCR...

I have a vcr hooked up through ElGato eye TV 250 and have recorded clips to my harddrive. According to iMovie, it can accept any format. well, guess what...it doesn't. A quicktime error comes up...the error is as follows...
The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/Documents/EyeTV Archive/Live Recording - 4/3/07 12_58 AM.eyetv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -43
This doesn't look like being able to accept any format to me. The tutroial, from what i've seen, doesn't address recording from a VCR.
If anyone can help. it would be greatly appreciated. I have a ton of video to edit and create.
    Thank you.

welcome chrono to the  boards of discussions...
    any format.. huh..? no:
iM is a DV-editor, meant to import lossless from firewire connected miniDV devices, by using the same codec, 'dv'...
due to the underlying Quicktime engine, iM 'swallows' some other (audio, video, still) codecs.. but not 'any'... the QT error -43 let us guess, it is somekind of mpeg...
the suffix of your file, you're trying to import, 'xxx.eyetv', is telling us, it is a proprietary format of your converter device..
I'm not familiar with these products, afaik, they come with some software, which allow an 'export'... if that export allows diff. formats, choose 'dv-stream'... if 'mpeg(2)' is the only option, you need to convert that with additional software (mp2 plugin (Apple, 19$)+ Mpeg Steamclip (free, www.suqared5.com) ...

  • Question about recording from VCR to Qosmio

I want to record my old personal Videos from VCR tapes to DVD using my Qosmio F10. I plug the VCR analogue output via a coax cable into the Qosmio TV aerial input and set up the Qosmio to recognize the VCR input as just another TV channel. It records onto the hard drive using MCE but the quality is poor compared to the original video tape. The colors and sound are ok but the pictures are lacking in detail and clarity.
Is there a setting on the Qosmio that I can use to improve the quality or is it the type of input I am using. My old VCR only has a coax and scart output and I can't get the scart output to input to the Qosmio.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi Nicky,
Thanks for the response. By Composite do you mean RGB output from the VCR?
    The Qosmio has 3 inputs:-
    1. conventional TV coax
    2. S Video
    3. iLink - firewire
There is no straight RGB input tho'
Can I use the iLink with a scart output from a VCR? The iLink works fine with my Camcorder.

  • I am trying to crop faces from old family group photos and paste them on to records in Family Tree Maker. When I do this, the pasted cropped image reverts to the original of the entire family. Is there a way of unlinking the original version from the crop

I am trying to crop faces from old family group photos and paste them on to records in Family Tree Maker. When I do this, the pasted cropped image reverts to the original of the entire family. Is there a way of unlinking the original version from the cropped image?

Are you copying the cropped images directly from Aperture's Browser window and then pasting into your family tree?
It would be safer to export the cropped faces as new image files to a folder on your disk, and then drag them from there to the "Family Tree" window.
To export select the cropped image versions in Aperture's browser and use the command "File > Export > Version". Select a suitable export preset from the pop-up menu, for example "Jpeg fit into ..." and select a folder to export to.

  • Retrieve recording from fios

I guess this topic was discussed before and it was all over the internet. here is the issue.  I just got new plan and sign up with fios tv with dvr.  I am new to this and actually first use dvr.  I recorded some shows on tv and want to take it out put on my hard drive.  I looked through the dvr menu and found no option to do that, then contacted tech support.  they told me there is no way to do that due to copyright.   The recordings stay in the machine forvever even if I cancel my service I have to return the dvr machine recordings still in it.
I found discussions on internet about people trying to download the recording with real time recording with tv tuner.  I have an old vcr with dvd recording.  I tried to record it from dvr put found quality is not good, plackback was crappy, not clear.   Maybe the connection was not properly setup.
anbody know how the connect settings to improve recording quality?
I also found discussion that people try to record from dvr playback with tv tuner.  what are the good ones that can recording HDTV quality?  is it possible to record with HDMI ?

  • Recording from a stereo

How do I set up a voice memo recorder to record from my stereo? It should be possible (as the manual on the voice memo recorder briefly notes, and Apple confirms), by switching the button behind the microphone from "mic" to "line." But so far I've only succeeded in getting a message that no microphone is connected. Ordinarily I have an AV cable hooked up in a way that works for sending music from the ipod to the stereo -- connecting to the output jacks for a VCR, since all the others were in use by cd player, tape deck, and phonograph player). But when I try switching it to the input jacks and recording an old LP, I get only the error message, whether I plug it into the place where the microphone goes or instead where the earphones go (which I guess can't be right) on the ipod. Can anyone explain what configuration would work? Am I right in assuming I don't need any further wires?

    Hi,
Are you trying to upload to your computer, the audio tracks on old LPs played on the stereo? If so, probably a better way to go is to get a second set of audio cables to go from the audio/line-out jack of either the phonograph or amplifier (depending upon your stereo's setup) to the audio-in jack at the back of your Dell (assuming you have a sound card installed).
I suspect if you use the iPod Voice Memo mic for recording the LP as it plays over-the-air so to speak, the quality won't be great. Better to input directly into the sound card the audio output produced by the stereo.
Depending upon what you want to do with the audio tracks once it's on the Dell, you can get other pieces of hardware, such as an M-box, or software to further clean up to sound, before you import it into iTunes (for example).

  • Video record from PC

I have trouble recording from my MSI Ti-4400 card to my VCR (from W2k).
I've connected from my graphic card to the VCR with RCA connectors to a SCART adapter to the VCR. The picture is perfect on the TV but when recording on a VHS tape the playback from the tape flickers.
I've tried different tapes and sources and no problem there. It must have to do something with the settings on the graphic card?
    Thanks for help.

Found it. The Output device in the graphic card settings was set as NTSC-M as default. Works fine now.
Strange that it had a perfect picture on the TV but not on the VCR recording since the signal was passed through the VCR to the TV (maybe I have an old VCR )
    Thanks anyway!

  • Old VCR Video Tape to DVD

Is there a way of taking old VCR videos (home movies) and transferring them to DVD? Can this be done from VCR to Mac computer?

    Hi -
The answer to your question is yes, but it is a multi-step process that you may or may not be interested in doing.
The basic workflow will be to connect the analog outputs of your VCR to a device (convertor) that will change the signals to a format that the Mac can ingest. You use iMovie software to ingest the material.
Once you have the material in your computer, you can (if you choose) edit and title it in iMovie. Then you can send it to iDVD to have the material converted (internally in the Mac) into a format that will create a standard DVD, and then burn that DVD.
The convertor you use to connect the VCR to the Mac can be a dedicated convertor like the ADVC300, or you can possibly use a Camcorder that has analog inputs and a DV output to do the job. There in no way to directly connect the VCR to the Mac without some kind of hardware interface.
In any case, you would use iMovie and iDVD,
If you are not planning on editing the material, but just want to convert the VHS tapes as they are to a DVD, and have lots of tapes to do, then you might want to consider a stand-alone DVD recorder. This will simplify everything as you simply connect the VHS machine to the DVD recorder and burn copies directly. Here is a link to an example of a DVD recorder:

    Hope this helps.
