Recording good sounding guitar tones

So I'm trying to record my guitar through an irig adapter in GarageBand on my iPad and all of the crunchy and distorted tones sound kind of crappy. Is there a trick or technique to getting the right tone? I've heard all of this hype about how great the amp emulators are in GarageBand and I'm rather disappointed with what I'm getting. Thanks.

Hi Chris. The best way to do post recording processing of your vocals is to record them separately. This will ensure that you have just the vocals to work with and no guitar 'bleeding' into the vocal track. This can sometimes be a frustrating process for a guitarist/singer who is used to holding/playing an instrument while singing. Depending on your equipment, you may be able to get away with not using a mixer or audio interface as you will be recording only 1 track at a time. (A list of your gear and description of how you use it would be very helpful).
Once you have tracked your guitar and vocals separately, you can then add some effects. With a basic guitar & vocal project you can typically do 1 of two things. With the 'Master Track' tab highlighted you can add some of the Reverb effect to the whole project. Reverb is the effect that will give you the sense you are sing "in a bathroom" or a larger room. Experiment with the amount.
The other option is to selectively add reverb to you individual tracks. This allows you to set differing amounts for the vocals vs the guitar. Presumably you have used the "Real Instrument' option to record your vocals. With that tab selected (next to the Master Track tab) and the actual track channel you used to record your vocals highlighted/chosen, chose the edit tab in the info pane. At the bottom you will see a Reverb option/slider. Alternatively if you have a third party reverb AU you can click an empty slot and load it for use on the track.
Hope that helps.

  • For guitar, vocals, keyboard/drumpad controller, what is the best audio interface to use/record quality sound in Logic, Mainstage, Garageband, etc. (lowbudget)?

So many to choose from. im really just trying to record clean sounding electric guitar tracks now vocals in the future and keyboard/drumpad controller near future..(irrelevant but thought i should mention im in the market for a keyboard and drumpad controller combo hopefully will be usb or something) but i need a quality audio interface to use with Logic Pro 9 and all the stuff that comes with it (mainstage, etc) and also Garageband. I have heard so many different reviews about this or that but all in all i dont think i can afford an apogee except maybe the apogee One but it at 249 or whatever i feel like i could get alot more bang for my buck. Ive heard alot of good things about m-audio gear but i heard mixed reviews as well. If someone can just tell me what is the best interface in the 100-200$ range for the needs ive listed above...Any responses or advice greatly apprecitated.
    Thanks

    hi mm
there are so many different sound cards out there these days it seems - ill just say that one that i got alot of use out of was the tascam 122 (http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-122.html)
it has 2 decent phantom powered XLR inputs, some midi stuff, a place to plug a guitar into and some nice big knobs.
the next level would be something with more ins (8 or 10) and probably firewire, and also around $400 i think.
oh, and your computer should be more than sufficient to handle what you want to do.

I am trying to record a basic guitar track while I sing along.  I don't want my vocals to be recorded at the same time but the internal mic seems to be picking up the vocal and guitar sounds.  I tried System Preferences, Sound, Line In - Audio Line Input.  It seems to be a common problem in Garageband for the Mac, ipad and iphone.

for me it turned out that the jack into the iMac was loose.  Once I fiddled with it everything worked okay

  • Track Enabled To Record Distorts my Guitars Sound

When I enable a track to record it alters the sound of my guitar. It almost sounds like the distortion effect is being applied twice which makes it the sound full of static and just crappy.
If I disable the record button the guitar sound goes back to normal.
    Any ideas??? I'm totally stumped.
    other info:
The GNX4 is connected via USB to the laptop and LE8
The laptop is configured to use the USB interface as the input and output for audio

The LE8 track is a simple audio track with no plugins applied. I'm not using any of the features in LE8 to alter the sound of the guitar.
My GNX4 1/4 outputs are connected to a simple mixer (with no effects enabled or anything else to alter the guitars sound) and my speakers are plugged into the output of the mixer.
When I disable the LE8 track for recording my guitar sound is perfect. I hit the record button and it changes the sound. I don't know what other information I can give????
Its almost like hitting record causes some kind of signal loop that is applying the GNX4 effects twice before LE8 records it. I can't explain how that might be happening but that is what sounds like is happening.

  • Recommended setting for good guitar tone

    Hello all,
I'm a new garageband user and would like some recommendations on getting some good guitar tones. I have been fool'n around with the amp settings and have found some fairly decent tones but if anyone would like to chime in and post their settings that would be most excellent.

Very true, Let's say something like a 65' deluxe reverb ( ala Roy Buchanan )

  • Making a sound recorded inside sound like it is heard from outside

    Hi there,
I am trying to make a sound recorded inside sound like it is heard from outside (in the street). Any suggestion about a good filter?
    Thanks,
    JCD

    - I hope the inside recording didn't have too much reverberation or 'room tone' (imagine recording it in a washroom). The indoors sound needs to be flat (no echo from walls, no background sound)
    - Reverb puts dead sound into a space with walls. You can add reverb, but you can't take it away. If your character is on a football pitch but you record the dialog in a washroom, it's not going to work. If your scene is in the Louvre, and your talent is recorded in a voice-over booth (or in a car or in the bedroom surrounded by blankets - hey it works), you can add the reverb.
    - Cut out a lot of the bass frequencies. Nice clean indoor sound has too much of it. The Big Outdoors lacks the reflectors that makes for big boomy sound (remember, big sound can 'sit on the shoulder' of the viewer)
    - Add location sound, so if your visual location is windswept moors, then lots of wind noise on the mic. If it's city, then lots of traffic hum, tyre noise, sudden car horns and stuff. Take your VO and pull out the bass, and you're 'there'.
    - Match camera perspective to voice perspective. If you did a close mic in a quiet room my guess is that the talent spoke softly and in a measured fashion, so your outdoor shots must be similar OR strikingly different (as if we're seeing into their mind).
    - If you need talent to deliver outdoor lines in voice-over (quiet room) for a frenetic environment, mic them up 'distant' and get them to speak loudly. Position yourself (the interviewer) a long way away from the interviewee. Mic them up with a Lav, but make out you're using on-camera mics, so they have to speak up.
    - If you're doing foley with amateurs, get them to replay the part with a radio lav (they think it's backup, it's your main) and put the biggest mic you can find as the main mic. Sometimes people need something to act to, and a lav does not cut it.

  • How do I make the internal mic on my macbook air sustain better when recording on garage band? I have been recording an acoustic guitar and listening back, the mic seems to pick it up well naturally for 1 or 2 seconds then dramatically drop out.

I realised that you just need to go to System Preferences > Sound > Input > and uncheck 'Use ambient noise reduction'. mmm answered my own question.

  • Help! Guitar tones do not play...

The guitar tones screenset, from the new project menu doesn't produce any sound. I can access the same exact guitars from an empty project, but not from guitar tones. weird. I'm running logic 8.01, on a quad G5. I have 2 internal drives, with the audio and samples on the second drive. I initially thought that was the problem but now i'm not sure. Every other project seems to play fine. Anyone else have this problem, or any ideas how to fix? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your fast reply. Sorry for the lack of info. Here is a list of things I've tried:
    - using the finder to locate the original videos
    - selecting the video, file, reveal in finder, original = 0.00 sec still frame
    - opening with different programs; imovie, itunes, imovie video converter, firefox
    - different household macs (as we are on "sharing")
    - can't find them on hard drive or external hard drive back up device
    - exporting them using "original" then reopening, still equals 0.00 sec still frame
When the image (video) is selected, the info states that it is a mpjeg, which I believe is a still image. Do you have any other suggestions on where to locate the originals on my macbook or how to convert them back to .mov?

  • I'm trying to multi-track using an m-audio device, I can record my guitar fine. However, I want to create a new track so I can record an acoustic tambourine over the top. Instead it records the original guitar as well as tambourine? its really annoying

I'm trying to multi-track using an m-audio device, I can record my guitar fine. However, I want to create a new track so I can record an acoustic tambourine over the top. Instead it records the original guitar as well as the tambourine coming out with a really distorted sound. I've managed to record over the top of a guitar before and add diferent riffs and sounds but I've tried all of the settings but its still not working. Basically I want to record different tracks without it recording my previous guitar riffs as well. Help would really be appreciated.

Ah that was it, thanks a lot common sense really but thanks for the help

  • Trying to record the sounds in my casio keyboard to garageband

I have a decent quality casio keyboard with midi. The midi works fine when recording midi sounds in garageband. However I will occasionally want to use the sounds built into my keyboard since some of them are better than the garageband sounds.
Ive taken a line out from the keyboard and connected it to the audio in port on my mac and set up a new track as a real instrument track. As soon as I do this the green volume indicaters go to halfway and Im not able to record anything.Im just getting a load of distorted inteference.Im using the built in input in garageband.
The only way Im able to record the keyboard is through the built in mic in garageband which is picking up the keyboard sounds but it doesnt sound too great.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Cheers

  • Xperia Z2 Cannot record audio sound louder than a bird chirping without distortion!!

Seriously Sony My Nokia 808 Pureview recorded Loud Concerts perfectly!!! Amazing that i spent 450 Euros on the new Z2 Xperia and the audio recording isnt bad is ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC!! Why have 4K Video if u cant record the sound. Even at a sports event it sounds Horrible... I NEVER had this problem on my Nokia Pureview... PLEASE FIX THIS!!! IT is totally unacceptable for a Flagship device!!

Because the CEO of Nokia is a moron that should have put ANDROID in the Pureview and that would sell a million units!!
But lastly Windows phone has NO let me repeat NO good apps!! If the Apps were equal, I would have absolutely no issue with getting a Nokia Lumia ahnds down!...You cant even get Tinder on a Windows phone!

  • Cannot record ingame sound with glc (-git)

I have a problem with recording ingame sound with some games with glc (well, glc-git). glc says, it can record sound from games, if they use alsa (or sdl and forcing sdl to use alsa). As long as I don't use pulseaudio, this shouldn't be a problem. But for some games, I can't get the sound recording to work. The 2 at the moment are:
    FTL
    Amnesia: The Dark Descent
I usually get a message like this:
    [ 1.46s alsa_hook error ] 0xa8a8170: unsupported audio format 0x0e
    [ 1.46s alsa_hook error ] 0xa8a8170: can't extract hardware configuration: Operation not supported (95)
I can record the game, but not the audio. If someone can help or test it, if it works for him, that might be nice. Or if someone knows a workaround or so. Or if someone can confirm, that there is no audio recording for those 2 games (but I actually don't wanna hear it... :-) ).
Also there are plenty of games, I got the audio recording to work with. You can see it in my youtube-channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ChemBroTronNo1

doorknob60 wrote:Do you use 64 bit? I don't have a copy of Amnesia downloaded right now, but if Amnesia is a 32 bit binary game, and you use 64 bit, you need to make sure you have the proper 32 bit libraries. lib32-glc will probably be enough.
That's not the issue, the problem is that some games are firing 32-bit float audio (0x0e type as indicated in the error) into ALSA through whatever means, and the standard GLC only supports 16, 24 and 32bit signed int audio. My fork above adds very rudimentary support for float.

Not all apps are enabled for video airplay, it would be up to the developer to do so.
