Recording in iMovie with external microphone?

Is there a way to capture video in iMovie using the iSight and an external microphone? If so, how do I set that up? If not, what program records the best quality videos but also has this external mic option?

Yes
If so, how do I set that up?
Connect external mic. Then select it in the "Record From:" in the choices bar in Voiceover window.
If not, ... ?

  • Record video directly into imovie with external microphone?

Here's what I am trying to, and I am just wondering if it is possible.
I like recording video covers/songs to put up on youtube.  i don't have a video camera that takes good video AND sound, and the video quality provided by recording in imovie through the isight is perfectly fine.  however, i would like better sound quality than i get with the internal microphone.
i own an mx audio pro system which allows me to connect external microphones to my computer through usb for higher quality recording (i've used it for garageband).
my question is whether i can simultaneously use the isight and external microphone when recording in imovie, and how i would do that??
    thanks!

Click System Preferences/Sound/Input and select your USB mic.
I know this works for voiceovers, but it should work for iSight as well.

  • In iMovie 09 can record video w/ iSight with external microphone?

In iMovie '09 is there a way to capture video using iSight camera while having the audio come from a different microphone other than the iSight microphone? If so, how?
I've attached an external microphone and selected it under settings and for the voiceover mic (within iMovie '09). But regardless of any setting changes I make the video captures audio still from my iSight microphone.
Thanks in advance for your help.

did you try changing any settings in the Sound control panel within the System Preferences?

  • Recording an interview with two microphones?

Thank you for considering my question.  I'm conducting a series of interviews on location and am recording the conversations with GarageBand on my MacBook Pro (13", late 2011), running OS X Maverick 10.9.2.
I've been using one Blue Snowball external microphone, but this doesn't pick up both voices very well.
May I add a second microphone to GarageBand and get two separate vocal tracks?
Also, which external microphones do you like for recording interviews?  The Blue Snowball is very bulky, and I'd rather not have to cart it around (although it looks impressive).
Thanks in advance for your help!

yes, you can create an aggregate device for multiple inputs:

(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
although this short video tutorial is made with os x 10.9 and GBv10, the principles are the same for 10.6 and earlier versions of GB:

you can take a look at the Samson here:

but im not sure that it's any less bulky.

  • ZEN NEEON with external microphone possib

    Does anyone has Zen Neeon?
Neeon has 'direct line-in recording' as stated in the product page, does that mean it is possible to plug an external microphone (eg. Sony ECM-DS70P) to the line-in jack and bypass the built in microphone?
    thanks.

I don't have a Neeon, and there aren't a lot of people here who have one so I'm not sure how quickly you'll get a response to this. On the previous MuVo N200 (which had its name illogically changed to the Zen Nano, if I recall correctly) the line-in wasn't well rated for quality, based on posts here. Being a Journalist you might want to try and get a product from Creative UK to test for yourselves.
On point 4 you are best to contact UK Customer Service (or as you are a Journalist, perhaps UK Sales) who will be able to tell you (or not) whether the player is coming. Often this kind of information is limited to a press release.

  • Why can't I record to iMovie with a HD camera?

Trying to record to the newest version of iMovie and since the recent update I am not able to record to iMovie because "camera not controlable". Is there a fix to this or way to bypass? I'm using a  Sony HD camera.

    What is a high rating?

  • How to record on iPhone 4 with external microphone?

I got a GoPro for christmas and my main intentions were to use it with my car. In this case, sound is very important and unfortunately, the GoPro does not record too good of audio.
My question is: What steps will I have to take to utilize an external mic with my iPhone and more importantly record it? I have looked on the app store for apps, but I am afraid that it wont record or recognize the sound coming from the external mic. I am wary of "voice recorders" because I know some try to implement technology such as noise cancellation that would skew my end product. I just want raw sound.
Additionaly, what adapters if any will be required?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hello everyone,
I just found this topic which seems to be related to my problem.
Firstly, I do not own an iPhone 4 like you but a 3Gs (doesn't really matter I guess).
I also bought an adapter from kvconnection : http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-iphone-mic-a22.htm
My wish is to make phone calls using a microphone connected to my computer. I have some kind of a home-studio, and I would like to build a dock on which I could plug my iPhone, with the upper jack connected to my soundcard, on which my mic or my computer sound comes.
In simpler terms, I'm trying to use an external audio source than my iphone microphone during calls. But this adapter i bought doesn't seem to work.
Have you guys a piece of advice or any solution ? Maybe just some compassion sharing the same problem =)
Good holidays to all of you!

  • Using iMovie with external USB 2.0 drive

I use iMovie on a 2-year old MacBook Pro. The MacBok Pro has Firewire 800 and but only USB 2.0. I've been using an external Firewire drive with it for storing my movies. Now it is full and I need to get another external drive. However all the new drives I've seen are only USB.
My question: Will it be a problem to use iMovie using USB 2.0? (The new drives are all USB 3.0, but the computer is only 2.0). Will I be able to edit movies that are on the extenal drive? Or will I need to store the "in-progress" movies on the computer, and then move them to the external drive when I'm done with them.
And when I ask "will I be able to" I mean doing it without seeing endless beachballs...
    Thanks!
    Dan

There are plenty of firewire drives available. This is one of the best:

  • Importing a Skype recording into iMovie with BOTH audio channels intact

Today I bought Call Recorder from ecamm; this is software designed to record video and/or audio from Skype conversations.  Today I successfully recorded a Skype phone call, resulting in a .MOV file that contained both people in the conversation.  But when I export this file into iMovie, I get only one voice!
I've converted the .MOV file to MP3, Apple Lossless, and m4a formats, but I still get only the person on the other end of the line, without my voice included in the file.
How can I export the file into iMovie so that BOTH channels are retained?
    Thank you!

Lennart usually quotes Fred Shippey on this:
If it's an AVCHD hard disc camcorder, try using Voltaic for converting to DV format. (..I haven't tried that - I don't have a hard disc camcorder - so I don't know how easy or not it is..)
For other kinds of non-tape camcorder, e.g; miniDVD, hard disc, memory chip, the usual means is to use MPEG Streamclip (..which is a free download..) and you'll also need Apple's MPEG-2 Component, which is a $19.99 download from Apple.
In both cases, convert to .dv.
Oooh, sorry Lennart; I didn't see you there!

  • How to record MBP Retina with External Capture Card?

I want to record games on my Mac, such as Minecraft and Amnesia, with my Avermedia Live Gamer Portable (in order to reduce the lag I get with using Quicktime), but whenever I try to it will not let me record. I have been told that this is because there is HDCP on the HDMI port on the MBP Retina. So I was wondering if anyone knows how to get around this?
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi there,
If I'm not mistaken, I think you need to have the power cable in for clamshell mode to work.
If you make sure the power is in you should be able to wake the MBP up from sleep mode with it shut and plugged into another display.

  • Imovie with external disk

    Hello,
as my disk space is too limited, I would like to use an external disk as main source for iMovie to a) store my projects and b) edit my projects.
Is this possible? If yes, how do I set this up?
Many thanks for your help on this.

    Hi
    External hard disks
    One must and one should.
    • Must be Mac OS Extended formatted - NOT UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - You do this by using Apple Disk Util tool - when it's brand new as it will be erased in the process
    • Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly to me
Free space on internal / start-up / boot hard disk should never be under 10Gb
Due to that Mac OS is UNIX and needs space for it’s temp files and each application
    also needs it’s scratch space.
Especially iDVD needs about 25Gb or more for SD-video and even much more for HD and
it can’t use any other external hard disks to this action.
Has to be enough space on the internal / start-up / booth hard disk.
    Order of Choice
    • Internal extra one in e.g. MacPro (e-Sata) - definitely the Best (can exist as an external port too)
    • External FW800
    • External FW400
    • USB2 - only to store material - not run from
    • Now too - Thunderbolt (great alt.)
    • Net-Work-Server systems - Not recommended at all.
Just for storage AND the NetWork HDs HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended - else disaster.
IMPORTANT - If You want to boot from it
    • Don’t buy Western Digital (My Book)  - not boot-able (for PowerMacs e.g. G3, G4, G5 at least)
    • HAS TO BE - FireWire
    • Has to be - Mac OS Extended formatted (mine are journaled)
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
    Yours Bengt W
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project
    Yours Bengt W

  • SX20 with external microphone

    Hi all,
Does anyone else ever encounter the scenario where a client wants to connect only one peripheral to a wall-mounted SX20, but also have a ceiling microphone?  Should this solution really require an Integrator codec?
People connect all brands of PCs to SX20 codecs.  Why should the SX20s not be able to accept different brands of microphones?
Cisco...can you help at all?  Is there a workaround available?
    Thank you.

People connect all brands of PCs to SX20 codecs.  Why should the SX20s not be able to accept different brands of microphones?
Hi Ben, welcome to Cisco Support Community!
The microphone inputs of SX20 are not standard audio interfaces, that's why you cannot connect another standard microphone to them. Have you ever realized that Cisco Telepresence Microphones used with SX20 have mute button? This is one the reasons why the inputs are not standard.
With regards audio PC input, it is a standard audio interface, that's why you can connect any device to it. However, it is not recomended to connect a microphone to this input, because it is not designed for this purpose, so that you can have problem with echo.
SX20 is not designed to the kind of room you have. I would also suggest you an integrator package solution, such as C40/60.

  • Using an external microphone with a Mac Pro Tower

I have a Mac Pro tower with OS 10.4.11 and I have a question regarding recording sound through an external microphone.
I own a microphone with a 1/4" jack and when I plug it into the designated input on the back of my tower, I'm not getting any sound. I've troubleshooted with a couple different microphones and none seem to work. Am I doing something wrong? Is there some sort of configuration that I have to do when using a mic?
    Please help!

I'm sorry, but that's not really my area of expertise. If you are planning to use this for simple voice-recording you could try the Griffin iMic device which helps provide both pre-amplification and impedance matching between a mini-plug mic and a USB port for sound input. I've used it recording music from a boom-box to a MacBook.
The tech specs state that the audio line-level in port is:
Input impedance greater than 20,000 ohms
Input level: Max 2 V rms (+8.2 dbµ)
I would look for a mic that meets those specifications. MacSpeech.com has several microphone/headset recommendations for use with their Dictate and iListen voice recognition software. I would think that their suggestions would be useful.

  • External Microphone Static at Certain Intervals

    Hello,
I've had a Sennheiser PC-151 for a few months now, and whenever I record in Quicktime with the microphone, about 2 minutes of straight static/echoing occur. This usually happens at about an hour and nine minutes in, and from there occurs every hour afterward. I've searched a couple of forums and found that a lot of people have had similar problems. The solution I kept seeing was to go into Audio MIDI and change the clocking/add an aggregate device, which I did, but nothing changed. To give some specs, the microphone is on a headset which has a 3.5mm stereo jack. I have that attached to a USB adapter. At first I thought that the static came from the time machine backing up, as it happened every hour, but it still occurred even after I turned off Time Machine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Sorry, if I did confuse you with the wrong words that I used!
I am aware of DropBox, sure its a correct answer and very user geared, but for those in only one location such as Japan, North America, Europe etc. I should have mentioned, that I neeeeed to use it incl. in China.
As someone who is often in China, DropBox has some drawbacks .i.e. either its shut down, or takes ages until you can access or just in the middle of a up / download it keeps crashing...
I thought I found a way around this blockage, by using foreign proxies while being in China it worked well until recently. But on my recent trip to China out of 10 attempts, on 8 I couldnt access the site with any reliable overseas proxies that I had!
I found NetDisk which seems to work well and very userfriendly, but I do wonder for how long! To avoid any troubles I had to start to upload my important files / docs into my yahoo email account as draft's. Yahoo has functionality limitations because, they can not be indexed or organized in a user-friedly way. It sometimes also not possible to access Gmail, which in fact has better ways to organize files / folders but because of access issues I dont use it for file related issues!
    Anyone, facing similar issues...!
