Recording in mono instead of stereo

I am an elementary teacher creating student podcasts. We've had no problem until today.
I have 4 5th generation video ipods that we use with TuneTalk stereo to record the pieces of our podcast. Suddenly one of my ipods will only record in mono. It downloads perfectly to iTune and everything sounds fine, but when I pull it into Garageband - it sounds like the chipmunks are visiting. My 4th graders think it's great - I don't!
I redownloaded - the voice memos - made sure I had synced it to the correct computer and the problem continued. I am syncing to a MacBook running 10.4.9. I made sure my iTunes and my iPod software are up to date. I am using iTunes 7.1.1
I have recently updated Quicktime to 7.1.6 and have been having some issues with the Q with the ? for podcasts using Safari. Would that bother my voice memos???
Any suggestions??

What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
If you're using video from a camcorder that shoots in 5.1 and your project is set up for stereo, you can end up with issues like this.

  • Why Does FCE capture DV audio as dual mono instead of stereo?

FCE captures DV audio as dual mono audio files instead of a single stereo audio file. You can see this if you "Show Movie Properties" in Quicktime. Files I captured in Premiere 6 years ago have a single stereo file. The problem is that the new dual mono format for DV won't play on the Final Cut Pro 3.04 installed on my wife's G4 (OS 10.4.11, Quicktime 7.6.2). FCP 3.04 doesn't see any audio for these dual mono files though it will play the video. It won't even create an audio waveform. But FCP 3.04 plays the older stereo audio clips captured in Premiere just fine. And if I export the dual mono files out of QT as a stereo file, then FCP 3.04 will play them just fine.
This lack of backward compatibility is quite frustrating. I can't seem to find a setting in FCE that will capture audio as a single stereo file. Why isn't NTSC DV always stereo? I guess maybe they had to go dual mono to facilitate surround sound panning in 5:1 or something. If nobody knows how to do this in FCE, I guess I'll just capture in FCP 3.04. I spent the better part of a day figuring out this hidden little tidbit. The lesson is don't try to go back!! We must always accelerate forward into newer versions and formats.

The problem is in your wife's machine. She is using a version of the OS and QuickTime that are much too new for the version of the software she's using. She really not not be using an OS newer than 10.4.10 and QT should 7.2 or earlier.
Yes. I was beginning to suspect that this was at the root cause of my issue. Thanks for the info. Frankly, my wife needs to buy a new Intel iMac so we'll both be able to work on the video I'm dumping. I had FCP 3 lying around from years ago and it's the only thing that might have worked on her old G4 AGP, so I thought I'd give it a try.

  • Encore transcoded audio into mono instead of stereo!!

    OK here is my workflow:
Shot 1080p video on Sony XDCAM PMW-EX1 with stereo audio track. Imported footage using Sony XDCAM Transfer (makes .mov files). If you open the .mov files in QT Player they show as having Track 1 - Video, Track 2 - Audio (left), Track 3 - Audio (right). I then used QT player on most of these files to set in and out points and then copy the selections, saving them into referenced movie files. (Did not do this on all of them though). In QT Player, all of these movie files play fine. Dragging the movie files into Peak 5.2 you can see they have a Track 2 and Track 3 for the audio (stereo!).
Then I dragged all my movies (referenced and non) into Adobe Encore CS4 and selected everything and transcoded it all. (I dragged it to the timeline befoer transcoding.) The timeline shows just one audio track. It's the audio track that appeared when I dragged and dropped the video from the bin into the timeline. Should I have made a second audio track before dragging and dropping?
Because when I did Build, and it made the BMDV folder, then I burned that to a BD-R, and played it, it's in mono. All the AC3 files are in mono (left channel only). Why would that happen? Shouldn't it automatically get both channels of the sound and do stereo, or warn you before burning if it's in mono?

You are correct, sir. I'm surprised the software is not intelligent enough to recognize that. It really should be drag-and-drop simple. It should at least ask the user, "do you want to discard one audio track?"
To solve this I tried the following: go into Final Cut and export the audio as stereo AIF, then drop that in. I wanted to avoid having to re-transcode all the video, but when I did this, it decided to anyway, then had an error. So I deleted the transcode folders. Then I went to transcode again and now it's saying "Error Creating Transcode Folder" or whatever. Sigh.
This program just seems too finicky and not very robust. I'm going to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 7 and just use Compressor 3.5, which finally can export a BDMV folder that I can just burn to whatever.

  • BH-903 turns mono instead of stereo

    Hi,
I have been using Bh-903 with e71 and earlier with E61i and was very satisfied with it. However since last week it has turned mono I can only hear audio from right ear and left has gone silent.
I have tried reseting the headset but problem remains.
I have tried with different phone problem is still same.
Any help or it has just broken...
    Chand

Stereo tracks should be unaltered.  What have you done?
this is how you should create it...
Right-click in this area and add new audio track...
    Select mono audio submix track...
A mono submix will be created in the mixer...

  • How to record in Mono

Is there anyway to record in Mono but using Stereo Mastering? When I create a new multitrack I choose stero cause the quality is significantly better but, I can't seem to record in mono mono. It records like left channel or right channel..

Yes, there are ways--which is right for you depends on whether you record in the Waveform (Edit) View or Multitrack View.
In Waveform, the dialogue box that opens when you click the record button has a category called "Channels" and the drop down menu there lets you specifiy mono or stereo.
In Multitrack, the input control (the right-facing arrow in the box to the left of the track section)  gives you a selection of None, mono or stereo--and, if you select mono on a stereo source, lets you select the right or left track.
(You'll have to have set up drivers, sound card choice, inputs and channel mapping in the Edit/Preferences menu before you get to this step.)
There shouldn't be a difference in quality whether you record in mono or stereo so long as all the other parameters are the same.

  • I have recorded in mono how do I convert to stereo in imovie 08

I have recorded  in mono how do I get movie to play in stereo?

I'm assuming that you have recorded in mono, then after editing the project and exporting it, the movie plays audio through one channel only on your speaker system.
Try exporting the project using "Share > Export using QuickTime". In QuickTime choose an appropriate video setting (such as H.264). The Sound Settings will probably show the default "Stereo (L R)", as the movie is being exported from iMovie which always assumes you are using stereo. Click on the Settings box - in the window that opens, for Channels select Mono. This may seem counter intuitive, but will allow the audio to be heard through both speakers after exporting. Of course, the audio will be identical in both channels - not true Left/Right stereo.
I haven't tested this but believe I've seen this tip elsewhere in the forum. Hopefully, I haven't misunderstood what you are trying to do.

  • Stereo signal on monitoring, but only recording in mono

Ive got a line-in cable going into my SB Audigy 24 sound card, carrying a stereo signal. When I hit F10 to monitor the recording level, Im getting a stereo signal.
However when I come to hit record, I only record a mono signal. It does this at both 16 bit and 32 bit depth.
I never had this problem with Audition 2, and I had the same sound card.
Please, what do I need to do to fix this?
    Many thanks indeed.

I've just had the same thing happen... it's one of those things Vista decided to do for me because I didn't reset it myself. If you have been recording in mono through no choice of your own, the setting in Audition's Audio Hardware Setup has got changed to one similar to this:
Default Input: [01M] Line In (name of sound card)
Click on the down arrow for the dropdown menu of input choices and set it to
    Default Input: [01S] Line In...
and that'll fix it for you. M=mono. S=stereo.

  • Setting audio recording from mono to stereo

How do you set the audio recording from mono to sterio on windows vista?

Select them all the timeline and press Opt-L.

  • Mono a1,a2 instead of stereo a1+a2

My FCP project has its sound in two separate mono channels a1 and a2 (in Viewer tabs). When I close the mono tab, a stereo tab appears but it carries no signal. Now I cannot treat the two channels both at the same time in raising and lowering gain (with the pen tool). How can I combine these two to act as a stereo pair?
    Hans van der Meer

    To create a stereo pair:
1 Select a pair of mono audio clip items in the Timeline. (Use the Command key to select the second item, if necessary.) If you click one item of a linked pair, the other item is also selected.
2 Choose Modify > Stereo Pair (or press Option-L).
The stereo pair indicators appear on the selected clip items in the Timeline.
If the clip items you want to make into a stereo pair have different durations, the clip items are trimmed to the region where they both overlap. The levels, pan settings, and filters that were applied to the top clip are applied to both, and the clip attributes from the bottom clip are ignored.

  • Audio Imports a Single Mono Track instead of Stereo

I am transferring mini-DV footage into a project that I was previously working on with a different camera. The audio used to import in Stereo Pairs, now it is just a single Mono track.
I don't think I changed any settings. I looked in the Clip Settings on the Capture window but I don't see an audio toggle. I am using FCP 5.0.
What should I do differently when importing and how can I get the previous single Mono imports into Stereo Pairs?
    Thanks,
    Hagen

If you have only one single mono audio track then duplicate it (select audio track then hold down SHIFT and OPTION/ALT key simultaneously and drag the mono audio clip down to the audio track below, it will give you a duplicate) after doing that select and double click the duplicated mono track and in the viewer Pan that hard right (1). Finally select both audio tracks and hit Option+L. You now have stereo pair.

  • Mono vs. Stereo?

I have a USB device which contains 4 1/4 Inputs (2 Left/Mono & 2 Right).  If I was to run 4 external Instruments as Mono instead of 2 external Instruments couldn't I break it back down from 4 Mono Instruments into 4 stereo Instruments within Logic Pro?

If you've got an external device that puts out a stereo signal then you will lose whatever stereo separation there is by summing it to mono.  You can then create a new stereo image using certain FX, but it would not be the same as the original inst.'s stereo image.  You will have to decide if the instrument you are using benefits from its own stereo capabilities.  ie; a guitar through a stereo chorus pedal.  Can you get rid of the pedal and use Logic's chorus FX (go mono), or is the pedal special and you want to preserve what it does (keep it stereo)?  If you've got outboard synths the chance is more likely you are going to want those in stereo from the source.

  • How can I record in mono useing L for ch1 R ch for 2 and so on

and have playback uniformed up 40 tracks.?

Assuming that you are asking about recording in Multitrack view. In the track you just have to click on the input selection box (right pointing arrow) in the track header and select your required mono input there. Ususally the Inputs from your audio interfaced are number, for instance, (01S), (02S) etc for the stereo inputs and (01M), (02M) etc. for the mono halves of stereo inputs.

  • 5.1 sound instead of stereo

My camera (Sony HDR-SR11) records the sound in normal stereo.
Also my prroject is regarded to be in stereo.
However when I import my footage, 5.1 tracks are created.
The properties of my clips are on the attachment.
I should do something wrong, but I can't discover what.
Where am I supposed to make a mistake?
    Rob

Hi, Harm.  You helped me once before and I'd like to ask if you could help me again.   I have two concerns:
    1) I did an interview on video not long ago, using a Sony PD 150 camcorder.  When it came to edit the video footage and I imported it into CS4, I found that the sound was a little low.  I couldn't increase the volume enough the usual way (by raising that little line on the sound track in the timeline) and was wondering if there was another way to do that.
    2) I checked the inteview footage the other day and found that, whereas the video is OK, the sound has disappeared completely!  The line on the soundtrack in the timeline, the one that is usually squiggly with the sine wave, is now completely flat.  Do you know how or why that happened and is there any way to get the sound back?
    Many thanks!

It should not be a problem, only optically, but you can try to just delete the 5.1 tracks.

  • Recorded in mono, but want to pan

I recorded in mono, but I want to pan. Is it possible to copy the track into two different stereo inputs and have one right and one left so I can pan from one to the other?

    Hi,
you should be able to pan every mono track by default, like every normal mixer console can. The mono channel's output is splitted at least to the OUT 1-2 Channel, which is stereo by default, so if you turn the pan knob in the mono channel's strip, it will pan to the OUT 1-2.
You know which knob the pan knob is, don't you?

  • Line in being recorded as mono

Alright guys, here's the deal. I've asked this before in a wordier way. I've searched through the board's past, with countless people having the same problem and not really getting a full response. See for yourself:http://forums.creative.com/creativel...ine+in%22+leftorhttp://forums.creative.com/creativel...e+in%22+stereoAnyway, here's the problem. I'll try and make it simple.
With the SB Audigy 2 Value, recording anything that outputs as stereo via LINE-IN doesn't record as stereo sound. It ends up only in the left speaker (left channel). The LINE-IN is supposed to record in stereo. YES, a stereo signal is being recorded. YES, the cable and connection is stereo. YES, all settings are set to line-in recording with stereo sound. YES, I have the newest drivers. YES, the programs I use all record in stereo. Has anyone EVER managed to record something in stereo? This could be... synthesizer output, guitar with stereo effects, a minidisc or cd player, anything that outputs stereo sound. When I say stereo, I mean two seperate channels (left/right). Not only one of them. For the love of god, somebody please give me a straight reply. This is driving me nuts. All I want to do is record stereo sound. This is necessary for basic recording.

you're welcome...and sorry if i sometimes sound a bit unfriendly....it's not my intention(but that was on another post, it's depending on how people ask...lol)
good to hear that you can use the full soundcard quality for recording.
Hint: try to record as wav 96KHz 24 bit, that's the highest quality for recording with mediasource.(after wav record you can convert it to any media compression format that you want, but wav 96KHz 24bit rocks your amplifiers...)
oh yeah another thing, above that left right volume meter you see something like avrl(auto recording volume) but only use it if you're lazy, because when not using it, you've a fixed input level(the rec slider at for example 50%=0DB), recording can better be done on lower volume then too loud, lower recordings can always be edited to put peak of rec file to 0DB, when you record too loud you get clipping, everything above the 0DB will be lost.
So newbees prefer to use avrl, but the negati've part of it is: sound get louder on low level output, and it gets lower on high output, and we don't want that when making high quality recordings..
But you'll find it out, give yourself time to learn all the good possibilities for this A2zs win-soundcard.Message Edited by www_96KHz_tk on -7-2005 :3 AM
