Recording iphone 4 video directly to computer, as it's recording?

Is there a way to use an iphone (3 or 4) as a video source for recording directly to my computer?
I'd like to use my iphone to record very long videos (1-2 hours), but the video files will be too large for the iphone's memory.  I have Quicktime, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, etc.  Can't seem to get any of these apps to do what I'd like.  Also could not find anything in the App store that would work on a non-jail-broken phone.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

No. You will have to get a separate camera if you want to record directly to the computer.

  • How can I capture video directly into FCP without recording to tape first?

I hooked my Sony VX2000 to the computer via firewire and opened the Log and Capture dialog box. The video from my camera shows correctly in the preview window.
I click the Capture Now button and the capture window opens but no video displayed. The message below the window says "Waiting for Timecode".
I guess the camera doesn't send timecode when it's not recording so I press the record button. Now video shows up in the capture window. After 16 frames it freezes and an error box pops up that says "Capture Now has reached the end of the tape. All existing footage between the point where you started the capture and the end of the tape was captured successfully."
Foiled again! This has been a problem from time to time when I want to capture video from a source that does not supply timecode.
Is there any settings I can change to capture video directly from a camera using FCP without having to record it to tape in one step and then capture it in a second step?
    Thanks,

I thought I had tried that. Thanks, that was the answer.
I am aware of the danger of not having tape backup. Having worked with the new Panasonic AG-HVX200 it is a chore to free up the P2 cards fast enough to keep from starving the camera crew. Copying the P2 contents to a single hard drive is the practice but leaves the whole shoot at the mercy of a single point of failure.
As far as my capturing directly to HD, it isn't a problem for short podcasts that could be recreated quickly if lost. Also, I can still record to tape in the camera but avoid the second step of capture when I'm in my edit bay anyway.
    Peace,

I usually just add them to an iTunes library and then sync with the phone. File / Add to LIbrary, select Movies under Media down the left hand side.
Have  a look at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1347 for more info.

What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
There are numerous converters online to convert the .VRO files into .VOB or MP4 or other which should be supported by Premiere Elements.
Maybe explore the free MPEG Streamclip for the conversion

  • How can I viewing my iPhone shot iMovie video on my computer?

I made a movie on my iPhone using the iMovie app. I uploaded it to itunes but can't find it. App message said it was in "share" section.  I want to view the video on my computer.

So you have done the Copy to iTunes button in iMovie on iOS? You have to plug in to iTunes, under your device, Apps > File Sharing, and find it there. Then click Save to... and save it to your desktop. This is still in the format for iMovie MOBILE, so in iMovie on the computer, you will need to do Command + I to import, then choose iMovie for iOS project.

  • Cannot transfer recorded big video files to computer

So I recorded a 12 min vid with the touch the other day, and it just' won't transfre to the computer. I get some error & it won't go through my desktop. The vid plays fine on my ipod. So I just did another test to record another 12 min vid, and I got the same problem with that video. Seems like I'm not able to transfer big videos to my computer because I'll get an error.....

Called an apple support & they solved it. Apparently IOS 4.1 is having these problems.

  • Can't share videos directly on iphone/ ipod facebook app

i can't share videos on facebook lately. when i am using facebook app on both my iphone 4 and ipod touch, and i am watching a video on facebook, then i click "share" it ends up sharing a link on my wall with the thumbnail of "facebook" and a link called SHARE (m.facebook.com) then when i click on this link on my wall, it takes me to the video!
when i am using m.facebook.com from safari though, i can share the link to the video directly on my wall. any clue why is that? i dont' remember that it used ot be like this. i think i used to share video directly and normally on my wall from iphone facebook app!

The FaceBook app isn't an Apple product.  Contact FaceBook for help on their products.  FaceBook will be better integrated with iOS 6.

  • HT4946 how can I save videos from my iPad/iPhone camera roll to my computer or hard drive

As per above, I am searching for a way to save camera roll videos and pictures to my PC computer or external hard drive as my iPad is full.  If I need to I would also need to import them back on my iPad in future.

kewl man has given you one option to move the photos and videos to your computer. You can also use Photo WiFi Transfer apps to move the photos and videos to your computer.

Once the photos are on your computer, you can place them into folders that you can sync back to the iPad or just use the WiFi apps to transfer the photos back to the iPad.

  • Best Streamclip settings for iPhone 4 Video - to edit in FCE

First, the problem: iPhone 4 records HD video in h.264. But Final Cut Express doesn't have sequence settings for editing h.264 or iPhone video clips.
The solution: I'm using Streamclip to convert all of my iPhone 4 videos to a format FCE lets me edit in.
Question: What are the optimal settings to insure that my final output retains quality almost equal to the original video shot on my iPhone? (More specifically, I plan on uploading to Youtube as a HD video).
I've read somewhere that I should convert to Quicktime Movie format, with Apple Intermediate Codec 720p 30fps. Is that the best compression type to convert to for editing iPhone 4 videos in FCE? If so, how should the other settings in streamclip be jiggered? For instance, does it make much difference if I set the Quality slider to 100% (As opposed to the default at 50%?) What about audio compression settings?
(P.S. I think it's very annoying that I can't directly edit a video from iPhone 4 on another consumer Apple product, the FCE. Does FCP let me directly edit h.264/iphone 4 videos?)

The slider makes no difference as AIC is variable bit rate within a specific range. No audio compression in FCE ever. Uncompressed stereo 48k, the video standard sample rate.
It would be truly miraculous if FCE worked with iPhone media as the current version predates it by three years, which in computer lifetimes is two generations, basically the equivalent of your grandfather having developed an app for a smartphone when he was a young man. FCP is a mere year old, well before the iPhone did video. Furthermore, if you'd read the forums, you'd see that H.264 is an acquisition and delivery forward. It is not used in production. The codec is not suitable for efficient production and really should never be used there. It's very unfortunate that camera manufacturers have taken the cheap way out and used this codec, rather than actually developing and using a suitable intraframe production codec.

  • IPhone 4 videos have been corrupted on import

I shot hundreds of videos on my iPhone 4 this summer. I imported them to my iMac using Image Capture on my return, and have only just decided to have a look at them in iMovie.
Upon attempting to import them to iMovie I noticed it only recognised 333 of 367 videos. I found the videos in the Finder and discovered that about 40 of them don't have thumbnails. I tried to open them with Quicktime and it said, "QuickTime Player can't open "IMG_2859.MOV" because the movie's file format isn't recognized."
And yes, I have since wiped my phone of these videos as Image Capture gave me no reason to suspect any were corrupted. They all played fine on my iPhone while they were there.
So, are these videos lost forever?

So something's happened to my hard drive to corrupt just these 40 videos in this particular way, do you think? Everything else seems fine. Hmm. Do you have any more information or useful links that I can read more about this phenomena?
Not necessarily. It simply means the files, as written to your hard drive, have a problem. This corruption could just as easily be introduced during the transfer process or been included in the original file on the iPhone whose player may or may not trap on a format test since it already knows the format used to store the file when the iPhone actually records the content. As to other information, you can search the QT forum for similar topics. This is not the first time users have reported this problem. In each case the problem files play on the iphone but not on the computer after transfer.
It seems like something there should be a market for but I found only two apps that deal with this sort of corruption and both want astronomical amounts of money for the use of a tool to fix them and make it awfully awkward to actually work out if your video is saveable in the first place, including uploading it to them! Very odd, old school way of doing business, and has put me off using either of their tools.
Have not researched solutions but can readily see why it might be expensive. For one thing the software may have to be tailored to the specific problem. This may also explain why the file would require examination by a qualified expert whose "bench time" may easily cost you $80-$120 per hour. You will note that I too asked you if it were possible to examine a copy of the problem file. In my case, I wanted to know if the file container could be opened by an application like Dumpster. If so, I then wondered if the problem might be solved by simply adding a valid entry to the field preventing the file from being played. This, of course assumes there is nothing else wrong with the file. This is not a work flow I normally use and only thought of it because a user in this forum was reversing width/height values when encodeding his content and then re-setting the "Current Display" value to display his files at the desired dimensions in old generation media players like QT 7. Unfortunately his work flow causes the files to display in "new generation" aspect ratio oriented player apps like QT X at their original endode matrix dimensions. In any case, in discovering two ways to modify his work flow, I found it was possible to modify media header data if the file could be opened and thought your problem file might be good for further testing.
Disappointed but not the end of the world, it's only a bit of holiday video. At least it wasn't my wedding.
Good attitude. My philosophy is to use dedicated devices for dedicated uses—i.e., use a camcoder for movies, a digital camera for still photos, and an iPhone for phone calls (with or without FaceTime).
Really would like to know as much more as possible about how this happens and why, so I can do what I can to avoid it. No other files I have randomly corrupt themselves weeks after being ingested onto the computer!
Sorry, this is a relatively new area for me and I am learning by "feeling my way around" at this point. (Basically, my interests are directed at the conversion of my video library for TV viewing.) As to avoiding such problems in the future, that will likely depend on when and how the files are being corrupted. If at the source, there is little or notheing you can do. If during file transfer process, you might try a different work flow. And if you have no other problems with the hard drive, it is unlikely that files are randomly corrupting themselves weeks after being copied.

  • IPhone photo/video library glitch - wrong file extensions, name shift, lost files etc [LONG story - sorry]

I have a 5s running 7.0.4. and my computer is running Windows 8.1.
We had a baby and my phone filled up fast with pictures and videos, so I decided to offload them onto my PC. I connected my phone to the usb port, and directly copied from the DCIM folder to my hard drive.
Something happened during the first attempt, and the process was interrupted. So I went into each of the sub folders, and selected all files, and started the copy process again. I told the computer to skip any existing files.
So all the file counts matched in each folder, and I figured it was safe to start deleting from my iPhone.
On my hard drive, I separated all the MOV files into my Videos folder. But in Windows Explorer, the thumbnail view showed several MOV files with no thumbnail - just the generic icon.
As I sorted my photos into various folders, I also noticed a lot of generic icons instead of thumbnails for the JPGs. I started to feel concerned that my files had become corrupt during the transfer. But then I noticed a PNG file that was a few hundred megabytes. This was odd, so I added the MOV extension to it. Sure enough, it was a video with the wrong extension.
I renamed every PNG and JPG file that had no thumbnail to add the MOV extension. Every one was a video with the wrong file extension.
Then I went to the video folder, and all the MOV files that had the generic icon were actually JPG files.
Well I was just happy to see that the files were not corrupt.
One more time before I deleted things from my iPhone, I did a spot check to see that the largest videos were on my hard drive. I found a few videos that were not copied over, despite the file counts having been accurate. So I copied the videos again, and compared file sizes and date/times when there was an overwrite prompt. Most were matches, but several were the same file name with different sizes and dates.
I didn't know what was going on, but I just wanted to get the files on my computer. So I renamed my local copy where there was a name collision, and copied the videos. I deleted the videos from my phone as I went along.
I felt pretty confident that I had all the files copied now, so I began mass deleting my photos.
I went to the Photos app on the phone, and watched the thousands of pictures disappear, and the glorious free space grow on my phone.
But wait... there was still 1 video in the Photos app. I thought I had gotten all the MOV files off the phone...
I have a photo info app installed, so I was able to see the file name of the video. I searched for that file name in the DCIM subfolders, but the folder that had that series of files (the IMG_3000-3999 files) listed the files with that particular video skipped. It was clearly still on my phone, because I could play it.
Then I noticed it was a 45 minute long video of my baby. About 5 GB. So I figured it must be due to the file size that it wasn't visible from explorer. (Can't explain why that would be, but M$ keeps changing crap too. I never freaking know what to expect from them either.)
After having deleted all the jpg, png and mov files from the DCIM folder, there were still about 26 files in my camera roll on the iPhone. And I could still view the video.
I decided I wasn't concerned about the photos, I just wanted to figure out how to get the video onto my computer.
So I selected all the photos in the photo app (skipping the 1 remaining video) and tapped the trash can.
Poof! One item remained, and it was one of the garbage photos. My video is GONE! ^#@*&#($^@Q&%( And no, I didn't fat-finger it. I was very careful to select the correct thumbnails.
Looking back, I know that I should have just started the entire file copy process from scratch when funny stuff started happening like mismatched file names. But I am a sleep-deprived new mom and just wasn't thinking clearly. It would be nice if I could have used my file/directory compare program to check the iPhone against my laptop, but it is not compatible with devices, only removable drives.
And no, I don't use iTunes. I stopped using iTunes years ago when it would randomly decide to delete contacts from my phone just because they didn't exist on my computer or some sh-- like that. I have always just manually synced all my stuff and have never had an issue like this. To say I am sad to lose that video is an understatement.
I googled "iPhone undelete" and "iPhone data recovery" and downloaded a trial for one of the likely candidates. It turned up a bunch of garbage, but not my video.
Anyways... I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of scenario? Has anybody identified what could cause this to happen? I would like to avoid this in the future. (I will avoid this type of loss, because I know now what I could have done differently to be more careful. But it would be nice if I didn't have to get all neurotic about checking 60GB of photos/videos side by side each time I copy them to my computer...)
I have seen other threads on the forum here regarding corrupted libraries and such, but I am not sure this is the same thing.
One suspicion I have is that it might have to do with the iPhoto app being installed on the phone. I can't articulate why I think that is worth considering. But when I looked at my Video folder, I ended up with many duplicate videos, and all the duplicated videos' file names were 2 numbers apart. As if all the file names got shifted at some point. Very strange.
Thanks for listening to my rant. If anybody has an idea, I am interested. If anybody else has lost precious memories due to this, we should talk. If it is a widespread problem, maybe we can all get together and pound down Apple's door?
As an aside: Why am I unable to select Apple Support Community to post this question to?

In my case number of weird things happen whenever I try to copy pictures/videos from my iPhone from direct USB...
    1. JPG files are wrongly named as MOV and vice versa.
    2. I copy only folders but in addition files with no extension are copied in the main folder, very strange.
    3. Whenever I open one of the folders, strange icons like this () start appearing which cannot be copied even.
Unfortunately I used to delete a lot of files with wrong extensions in the past because I never new they could be fixed.
    Apple should answer this!
Note: I am using Windows 8.1 and use a direct USB cable without iTunes to copy the media files directly from My Computer.

  • IPhone 4 video to TV out?

I had a wire that took my ipod nano 3rd gen out to my TV. worked great. does not work with my new verizon iPhone 4.
Is there a cord that takes video on my iPhone out to my TV?

Belkin makes one I have seen it at Frys... I looked at it it was more $$ and not as high quality. The iPhones do not directly support HDMI so you might as well let the TV do the conversion. The iphone4 supports 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite AV Cable. The iphone4 can record in HD and encode with the latest h.264 but the video out thru the 30 pin is still lower resolution
sorry for the long winded response

  • IPhone 4 video to iMovie 09 (iMac)

I have been taking videos in my iPhone 4 and they are in format .mov. However when I transfer them to my iMac (using image capture or the iTunes) and then try to import them to iMovie09 the iMovie does not recognize the format, in other words I cannot open them in iMovie 09 for further edition. Can anybody tell how can I open those videos in iMovie? Am I doing something wrong? by the way direct transfer from the iPhone to the iMovie does not work either.
Thanks a lot for the help, this is driving me crazy.

Shortly after uploading it to YouTube (via web browser) your video will be immediately available in a lower resolution quality.
You will have to *wait for YouTube to "Process" your HD video, before it becomes available in 720p*.
It can take anywhere from 1 to several hours.
