Recording live music on 2nd Gen ipod nano

Greetings-
I recently purchased a 2nd Gen ipod nano 4 gig. I'd like to be able to record live music, then load it in my computer. I obviously don't expect CD quality, just decent enough playback to be able to replay the music on my computer (using the Amazing Slow Downer, for example) to learn new tunes.
I would typically take it to an Irish music session, record the musicians then go home and try and learn the tunes.
Suggestions for a microphone?
Is this done through the memo function of the ipod?
If y'all have experience doing that kind of thing, I'd appreciate your kind advice.

As Lougoose and others have said, the "Music Videos" folder is simply there by default in the iTunes software, and does not have to do with your nano having the ability to play videos or not.
If you'd like to let Apple know about this, as a possible feature in a future update of iTunes or iPod firmware, write your suggestion on these Feedback forms:

  • 2nd Gen iPod Nano won't sync

My stepson's 2nd Gen iPod just won't sync.  It behaves normally in iTunes and doesn't cause any problems or symptoms with the computer.  Made a playlist and selected it to only sync to that playlist, shows that everything is fine, click sync- nothing happens.  I went through every step on the website's troubleshooting pages- reset the iPod, restarted the computer, tried it on different USB ports, and reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.  I tried to restore it and it went through the download process untill the end when a window popped up saying "error downloading software".  I'm at a loss and feel bad for him because this was a Christmas present from a family member and now it won't work : /  Any more experienced users have any ideas?  I called tech support and they said they couldn't help me unless I paid the $29.99 fee because this iPod is too old for a warranty >: /

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
lost libraryHow to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • 2nd gen iPod nano has blurry, upside down and backwards text suddenly

I have a second gen iPod nano and after a couple of weeks the screen is blurry upside down and the text is backwards. I have tried resetting it and restoring to factory defaults. Nothing helps. It is fully charged. I followed the troubleshooting instructions from Apple and I didn't find this listed on the forum.  Thanks for the help.

I would have to disagree with you. I like the shake and shuffle feature. I would assume people also use ipods for travelling/commuting. Bus rides, trains, flights and so on.
But, to each their own opinions I guess.
    Peace!

  • 2nd Gen. iPod nano keeps disconnecting

My 2nd Generation iPod Nano keeps disconnecting.  It was working fine until I tried to delete everything, which did not work, so I resorted to clicking "Restore".  The problem is that I am trying to sync podcasts only I keep getting a message:  "The iPod...cannot be synced.  The required file cannot be found".  This is very bizzare because I also realized the iPod Nano itself keeps giving a message also:  "OK to disconnect" and goes into sleep mode.  I am not sure if this is a settings issue...Help!
    Note:  The iPod is charged.

Ummm.. didn't you read the box or Apple website BEFORE you bought it?
You've made it through almost 3 large OS updates without complaint so I don't see how Apple wronged you.
This is your fault for not looking into this beforehand. There were major changes in OSX starting with X.3 that made it so that some software would not be compatible with the operating systems below that version. iTunes is such software.
    * Your nano needs iTunes 7 to sync.
    * iTunes 7 does not work is OS9, OSX.1, or OSX.2
Just like it won't work in Windows 98 or ME
An operating system made FOUR and a HALF YEARS ago can not be expected to support into perpetuity hardware that did not exist back then.
Your laptop works just fine, you have no problems upgrading cheaply to X.3 (you don't NEED X.4 despite your claims) and you can cut the pathetic comparisons to how "simple" windows makes it with anything.
He11, their own Zune isn't even supported by Vista.
I for one am glad the OS is updated in approximately 12-18 month intervals instead of allowing it to languish on its laurels. The gains in features are a good thing not a curse. If you want them people are free to upgrade at their discretion. No one is forcing you to upgrade the OS and no one made you buy the Nano. The requirements are all over the place and it was your job to look into it before buying it.

It really seems like a software issue. ...
    You're welcome.
Unless you get better suggestions here, and having ruled out other possibilities and concluded that software is the cause of your problem, my only remaining suggestion is that you try reinstalling and re-updating the software that you believe is damaged or causing the problem.

  • Restoring 2nd Gen Ipod Nano?

hey guys, iv just had a real big problem with my ipod nano (2nd gen)...
well basically i was wanting to sync some more music from my itunes onto it and it just kept disconnecting itself for some stupid reason, and after several times it said something like my ipod wasnt readable, and i think i accidently put my ipod into factory mode and iv been attemting to try to restore it back to normal and iv tried everything but i cant seem to find anything that works. iv even tried putting it into disk mode but i dont know how that works, and every time i try to restore it it keeps coming up with this error code...and now i cant even load my music back on it now, im just wondering if anyone can help and knows how to restore an ipod nano like mine and knows how i can get it back to normal so i cant put my music back onto it?? Thankyouu

If iTunes is recognising your iPod you should have no errors when you go to restore it. Restoring your iPod will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7

  • My boyfriend bought a 2nd gen ipod nano at a garage sale and can't get it to turn on or unlock. I shows the apple icon and a ipod with a cone shape next to it. I do we get this to work?

My boyfriend bought a ipod nano 2nd generation and can't get it to work and it only shows apple icon and an ipod with a triangle next to it. Says to see apple.com/support/ipod. Can anyone help to figure out what we need to do to get this working.  Thank you

I think it needs to be charged. Try keeping it connected to the computer for some time. Then disconnect and connect again. And I hope you have itunes installed in the PC as the iPod can be synced only with that. Here's the link to download itunes http://www.apple.com/itunes/
Also check the apple site for further syncing info.

  • ITunes not recognizing my 2nd Gen iPod Nano.

"An iPod has been detected, but can not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again."
This is the message my MacBook keeps giving me when I plug in my iPod Nano. All was fine until I downloaded 7.5 (then 7.6)
I've used different USB cords, I've reset my iPod Nano, I've switched it to Disk Mode to try to restore it that way...nothing works. And I know it's not my iPod because I deleted 7.5 and reinstalled 7.0 and it worked just fine. Unfortunately I need 7.6 in order to sync my new purchases with my iPod.
Anyway, anyone else having these issues with the new iTunes updates?????? Any solutions? Or does Mac just expect me to buy new iPods every 6 months....????? (very annoyed with mac right now as my other 30GB iPod Classic just starting flashing the sad ipod icon...i've had it 1 1/2 years....so very obnoxious.)
    Thanks for your time!

I'm glad (selfishly glad, I guess) that someone else is going through this too. Just upgraded to new iTunes and now my little 2GB nano isn't even recognized. Tried everything you did as well. No worky.
I will be anxious to see what someone comes up with...

  • The New 2nd Gen Ipod Nano is out to get me! Help me please!

Okay, so the new Ipod Nano's have come out, and so I bought one.
I'm really happy with it and everything, but sadly, and for some unknown reason everytime I connect it to my pc via USB, it makes my pc crash. Well not so much as crash but freeze? The Ipod sits idly by laughing at me and my PC. Make it stop! Its evil.
The thing is, no error message appears on either, and also when I do connect my Ipod to my pc, theres several secounds before it does in fact crash, and in that time the Nano isn't getting detected.
I've reset the Ipod, reset my pc, updated my version of Windows like it says you should, made sure theres no virus or anything running a riot on my pc. So I can't think whats wrong with it.
My Pc operates on Windows XP, and the thing is, its quite the a good PC, and this is the first time its done this. I've tried it on my mums laptop which also runs on XP, but the thing is the laptop my mum has is like 5 years old and the Ipod is recognised as soon as you connect it.
_< I'm getting really annoyed now, and I dont know what to do. Or even I dont know what else to do. I've spent the last two days doing everything I can think of, trying different USB ports, well, everything you can think of, the only thing left is reinstalling windows, and right now I cant do that as I dont have any way of backing up some of my files. </div>
Please can you help me! Anyone? -.- I need help....

No.  You can turn your 6G Nano in to be recycled at your local Apple Store for a 10% discount towards the purchase of a new one. Otherwise, your only other option would be to sell the iPod on Craigslist or eBay and use the proceeds from the sale towards the purchase of the new 7G nano.

  • Help! 2nd gen. ipod nano audio output not balanced

anyone knows what the problem of my ipod nano? while i was listening suddenly there was no audio output on the right earphone. i restarted it at least 5 times, even changed to another earphone. then after a few hours i tried to test it again and the right earphone works again but volume is much lower than the left earphone.
i dropped it at least about 2 months ago, could it be the cause?
will apple warranty work on my unit?

First off, be sure that you've fulle connected the headphones/ear buds to the iPod correctly. I know it's a simple thing, but sometimes is accidentally looked over, and can be the cause of this type of issue.
Next, I wold suggest that you restore your iPod.
If a restore doesn't help, and you're iPod is still under the 1-year warranty, I would suggest that you send your iPod in to get it repaired/replaced. Apple could possibly cover for it witht he warranty (although I can't guarantee it).
You can place an iPod service request online here -> iPod Service
Most likely, if a restore doesn't help your situation, then it's an internal sound problem with the iPod that will have to be replaced by Apple.

  • I have 2nd gen iPod nano with songs from iTunes but also burnt from CDs. I now have a new laptop currently without iTunes or any music on. Is there anyway for me to connect the iPod to iTunes on the laptop and not loose all of the songs on it?

Pretty much as it says above. I don't want to loose all my old songs that weren't downloaded and am wondering if there's anyway that I can make sure there safe to connect it to a new laptop with no music on at present.
Any help or advice would be great :-)
    Thanks

Thanks for trying, no it did not help. The article describes getting song from apple devices to PC, not the other way around. I will try ringing tech support tomorrow.
    Thanks anyway.

  • How can I transfer all my music from 2nd gen iPod Touch to iPhone 5?

When I connect my iPhone 5 to my MacBook Pro (Model MacBookPro2,2) running OS X 10.7.5 and iTunes 10.7 and try to sync, only my recently purchased music is copied to the iPhone.  Is there a way to directly transfer  ALL my music, currently contained on my 2nd ge neration iPod Touch (running iOS 4.2.1) or my first generation iPad to the iPhone 5?

It needs to be stored on your Mac and in iTunes firs before it can be synced over to your iPhone 5.
If all the content you want to sync to the iPhone 5 are purchases from the iTunes Store, you can redownload them all via iCloud directly from the iPhone assuming you live in a country where iCloud has gone live.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If it's non iTunes store purchased content that is no longer stored in iTunes on your Mac, you'll need to the help of third party software to help you get the job done. See this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • 2nd Gen iPod Nano - Impossible Restore

I recently bought a used 4gb 2g nano and had it working fine. Forgettiing that it needed itunes 7 to work, I formatted it in hope it would would with itunes 6.
Remembering this, I had to install itunes 7, bringing me to my problem...
When I try to restore the iPod, it loads saying "Connecting to the..." and asks if I want to restore. I click yes and it says again "Connecting to the...", but after maybe 10 seconds or so it says "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPod "iPod". The network timed out."
It does this every time I try. I've even tried reinstalling itunes 7.
So I am now stuck with a useless nano.
    Ideas?

You might be getting a conflict from another USB device and/or network device. Try connecting just your iPod, (and keyboard and mouse), and disconnect from any network you might be on and try again to Restore it. You might also want to download and reinstall iTunes.
