Recording live music with Soundblaster X-Fi Xtr

Hi,
My new Dell shipped with a Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme. I told the sales rep I wanted to record li've music into it, and wanted a card with a MIDI port - he said this was the card I needed but now it's arri'ved it hasn't got a MIDI port at all, just mic/line in, and digital in/out as well as the speaker outputs. I'm gonna have to buy an external audio board it seems... In the meantime I want to at least record some basic stuff but I can't work out (I'm new to this) how to overdub. Since I've only got the one line in for my instruments and vocals I want to be able to record over existing tracks I've saved - will someone please tell me how to go about this cos I've looked in all of the help menus and opened all of the software that shipped with it and can't find the right option. I thought it should be possible to achieve in WaveStudio, but this seems to just record over my existing track, not overdub it. Sorry if it's a really obvious question but it's driving me nuts.
Also - any clues as to why an AWFUL, piercing, electronic whine should come through my speakers occasionally when I click on a button in a website, or open a program? Doesn't seem to follow a particular pattern, which makes it difficult to predict. Most unpleasant...
Thanks!

sorry, i overlooked the psu,
the sticker says 550w psu : +3.3v - 30a, +5v - 35a, +12v - 20a
yes the onboard sound is disabled, as is the onboard modem.
I've tried it in slot 3, as well as all other slots and I get the same symptoms in each, I suspected an IRQ conflict to start with, possibly with the IDE controller but with it happening in everything slot I ruled that out for now.
What about changing the PCI latency clock etc... would that have an effect on the card?
I asked the question on the creative labs forum and a user suggested changing the PCI IRQ pool options in the bios but that didnt seem to have any effect either. Im close to giving up with this card but that would be a waste of money til I could afford a new board, CPU etc...
I'd be happier having a bios upgrade than have to change all the settings but I understand this probably isnt going to happen due the age of the motherboard. Funnily enough I havent had any faults using vista other than this, and as I stated I have also tried it with XP Pro SP2.
thanks for your help, and any other help you can offer. Im quite an experienced computer user so get technical if you need to

  • Recording live music with video iPod...

I tried using my video iPod to record a live music show and was very disappointed with the results. I purchased a MicroMemo digital audio recorder and used a set of stealth mics I've used for years with my portable MiniDisc recorder.
The iPod doesn't allow you to set recording levels and I think that was the problem. The recording was WAY oversaturated and virtually unlistenable. I tried using Audacity to edit the file, but I was unable to fix the oversaturated recording.
Can anyone advise me? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Bill,
I've used plugins in apps such as Pro Tools plugins to clean up
recordings of lectures. Other good audio software
that allow you to filter a sound file include Cubase
    , MacFOH ,
    SoX .
Thanks for the suggestion, Ed, but my recording is SO oversaturated that it can't be salvaged by anything. When you look at the recording in any sound editor, the top is severely clipped. You can't do anything to restore what isn't there to begin with, and that's the top of the waveform.
    Here's
a list of other open source audio projects at
    GNU.
    Nice list! Thanks for that!!!
    Good luck!

I did get some help from XTremeMac's tech support. Sharon Rivera from that company wrote this:
] The way to get true sound is through the line in setting with an
    ] external powered source.
It turns out the battery box (9V) on my Core Sound stealth mics means my mics are powered by an external source. All I have to do next time is use the "line" setting instead of the "mic" setting on the MicroMemo.
    Thanks for your suggestions!

  • Best mic for recording live music with video ipod?

i believe there are mics for recording sound, and believe there are even some which are made for great sound quality such as live music.
if so, which one is the best?
    thanks.

This is sort of like asking what is the best motorized vehicle.
There are different mikes for different purposes, instruments, etc. I'd get on Google and look for recording websites.
Myself, I like various Neumann's for certain applications.

  • Recording live music/sound through iPod.

I know that there's a microphone to record voice for iPod, but could you also record live music through an output on an audio board with the use of the audio cord adapter?

as far as i know no one has come out with a mic adapter for the 5G iPod yet. so until someone does it is not possible.

  • Record live music in MP3

    Hi,
Is there any model that best to record live music in MP3 format for at least an hour or so? Also, the play back still ok with internal speaker.
    Thanks,
    Bagus

I don't know of any model that records into MP3.
Most models can record into AAC Mono. But you need an extra application to record over 2 minutes at a time (depending on the model)
The original N-Gage phone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-Gage supports stereo AAC recording from the FM radio or an external line-in. But you will need a stereo microphone with high impedance output to connect it into the line in.

  • Recording live music on 2nd Gen ipod nano

    Greetings-
I recently purchased a 2nd Gen ipod nano 4 gig. I'd like to be able to record live music, then load it in my computer. I obviously don't expect CD quality, just decent enough playback to be able to replay the music on my computer (using the Amazing Slow Downer, for example) to learn new tunes.
I would typically take it to an Irish music session, record the musicians then go home and try and learn the tunes.
    Suggestions for a microphone?
Is this done through the memo function of the ipod?
If y'all have experience doing that kind of thing, I'd appreciate your kind advice.

As Lougoose and others have said, the "Music Videos" folder is simply there by default in the iTunes software, and does not have to do with your nano having the ability to play videos or not.
If you'd like to let Apple know about this, as a possible feature in a future update of iTunes or iPod firmware, write your suggestion on these Feedback forms:

  • Recording live music on a Mac G4

I have just finished putting together a Dual 500 Giga G4 for my son (as a surprise) he wants to use for recording his live music on.
I know nothing about this... will I need a sound card? or will I need specialist software?
I have done a little research but am as nonplussed as when I started as I have no basic knowledge of the terminologies used.
I have seen devices that connect using USB are these prefereable to the PCI type devices?
My son plays in a band and they want to record and edit their music, what do I need?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

know nothing about this... will I need a sound card?
Nope, all Macs since at least 1997 built-in stereo sound cards, not all had input, but the PowerMac G4s all did.
USB devices are preferably only in that the signal is digital, mean no noise issues going from a digital source. But you can get a direct line in via a straight 1/8th inch cable as this user tip of mine explains:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=2379847
it also explains the software you'll need, all of which is free.

yes, plug the console into the line-IN on the mac and set up GB:

(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
however GB would not be my recommended choice, especiall if the recording is to be unattended. if GB throws a modal error dialog it will cease recording; an audio editor is often a better choice:

  • Tell me where to go-I have bought logic express 8 - Recording live music.

    I have Macbook 2
    Presonus Firepod 8 in
    PA gear
    500 gig Firewire drive
We play live and I just want to hit record and play.
I stop at breaks and save the files.
    All of this works great!
Now any advice for someone who has five hours of music recorded with the default settings for each channel. For example why does it say midi files instead of audio files?
Hey I am serious, I am looking up at a real steep learning curve.
I have mixed some material down (bounced) to Itunes, it sounds great, but I am driving a fast car with no experience. So any advice, ABC's of live recording, any tips?
I am just a guitar player in his fifties who has been given the tools, but could sure use some common sense.

    Hi, and welcome!
Please note this is the Logic Pro forum - you should post your queries in the Logic Express forum.
So... No one here is going to type out the Getting Started manual for you - crack it open with a cup of coffee, or if you really can't be arsed to read a manual, then I'd suggest getting some tutorial videos from MacProVideo.com - about the fastest way of getting you up to speed with Logic.

  • Recording Live Music on Digital Recorder. Will They Load To iTunes ?

I want get a portable 4 track music recorder, most probably a Zoom PS04. Will the tracks I store & mix on its smart media card load into iTunes ?

While I'm not familiar with the device you've mentioned, the important thing to know is the format(s) the audio will be stored in on the device. If the file format is compatible with iTunes, you should be able to just connect a card reader to your computer and the media card will mount as a disc drive, at which point you should be able to add the files directly to your iTunes library or move them elsewhere on your computer using the Finder.
NB: I've seen lots of card readers that don't work on OS X Jaguar, and manufacturers don't always make drivers available for Macs, so if you need to get a new one, please check the specifications.

  • Self recording live music

    Hi,
I have recorded musical imovie's of myself through the internal camera and mic.
I play uke and some singing.
Is there a way/s to improve on sound quality?
I usually hit capture, then start a Garageband track I made, for accompaniment (I recently downloaded BandinaBox for Macintel so I will use that too) and that's it.
Sometimes I play amplified uke, which helps bring out the fullness of tone to the recording.
I play with volumes til I get best effect, then go for it.
I imagine there are all kinds of set ups, but is there any suggestions for upgrading the sound?

sorry to tell you: I'm no specialist in mics/music recording.
    allthough..
the built-in mic of a Mac is meant for.. iChat.
so, ANY mic is better than that.
I remember this is a frequent topic on this board, perhaps 'microphone suggestion recommendation etc' as keywords in the Forum Help spits out some threads..
perhaps the guys&girls in the Garageband section of this board are better qualified to answer..
for mixing diff. audio sources, I would suggest the investment into some simple mixer. and to avoid speak-over/feedback, wear some headphones..

  • 999 bars & it stops? when recording live music

    Hi
Does anyone know if you can increase the length of recording time of the 999 bars that seems to be the limit in GB. I was recording my mates band last night and after around 30 mins or so GB reached the 999th bar and I think stopped recording as the timeline was not moving.
Is there anyway of extending this 999 bar limit to record for an hour or more?
    Thanks
    Adrian

    Hi Hang Time
    Thanks for your reply.
I have just played back what I recorded last night and although GB stopped at the 999th bar it was still recording, It got to bar 1192 before I stopped it and created another track and started recording again.
Next time I will just leave it.
So I wonder if it does have a limit!!??
    Adrian
Oh and just to add it was a 4/4 120 bpm song setting
