Recording live piano and/or upright bass

Looking for suggestions on the best settings (EQ, compression, normalization) for recording live piano (upright Yamaha) and maybe also upright bass. Using Logic Express with two mics (Cardioid and Pencil) connected to Saffire Pro 24 (audio interface). Right now, I've for the gain knobs on the Saffire box set at about medium and then I normalize the audio recordings -- sounds decent but just want to make sure I'm not way off base. THANKS!

Don't normalise your recordings. All that does it raise the levels of the sound you want and the noise floor (background noise) as well. Usually there's no need to do this.
It's impossible to tell you "the best settings" for EQ, compression, reverb. there's no one-size fits all! It's like if I ask you here what shades of color should I use when painting this lanscape I can see from my window. Unless you are here there's no way you can know. Even you were looking at the same landscape and my painting your advice would be subjective.
Better to understand how the compressor, EQ, reverb plugins work and then apply it to your recordings that way. Listen to commercial releases of a similar style and use your knowledge of the plugins and how they work to replicate that style and build up skill in this area.

  • Lenovo g580 do I need to buy an external audio interface to record live instruments and voice ?

Hello,  If anyone could help me please ?, I am wondering do I need to buy an external audio interface to record live instruments and voice onto my lenovo g580.?
My friends have said that good laptops have audio interface's built in... but I cannot see how this could work as I am trying to build a home recording studio. Do they mean that I just need to have a mixing desk ? As the audio interface is already in my laptop, ?
Another question I have is... I have bought a microphone to record with a studio mic. But when I plug it into the headphone socket, it works as a speaker and not as a microphone. Please can you tell me how do I make it work as a microphone, and record on ableton. Thanks. I live alone with two cats so I'd really appreciate some help !
Thank you very much, best wishes.

I'm preparing to expand my studio from a 1 man songwriting system,
to add the capability to record a complete live band, with 16 separate
simultaneous tracks recording. Am I dreaming?
Nope. I've been recording live bands with up to 56 channels at 24 bit 48kHz for three years now.
    1) Does my computer have enough native power to handle such a task?
Yes. The actual recording uses the hard drive buss, so you need to make sure you have fast drives and a dedicated FW or SATA buss for them.
    2) Is there an audio interface device that could help shoulder some of
    the cpu load?
No. CPU is used only for routing audio, effects, etc. An audio interface is used to route the audio in and out of the computer, and as such does not process effects at all.
    3) is it possible to use my multiple, fast internal drives to help?
Yes. Although with Logic Pro you can use only one drive at a time for recording. HOWEVER, I have been able to use SATA drives to record up to 56 tracks AT ONCE. So there is plenty of power there.
    4) If not 16, what's the highest realistic track count I can hope for?
Again, I have done 56 tracks. 16 is a walk in the park in comparison to 56. I would recommend you invest in Apogee AD16X and DA16X, since in one interface you get ALL 16 inputs, and the other gives you the 16 outputs to go to, say, a mixer. And the sound quality is very very very good.
    thanks in advance
    You're welcome.

  • Recording live streams and streaming them through VOD service

We have a licenced FMS interactive 4.5. Currently we have a one time per day Live stream event which is streamed by FMLE to livepkgr application. As far as I understand the event is recorded on the server. We want to share that record on FMS vod service. Sadly I cannot find any real information how to do this? Do we have to code our custom Flash application for FMS for that, like livepkgr2 ? How to get the record and copy the file exactly the moment the record finished? Maybe somebody already did this?

you can creat an app folder in fms folder which is inside of
    ur setup folder,
for details u can mail at [email protected]

  • Recording live: No measures, no metronone

I am trying to record live piano. Don't need or want metronome or measures on my time line.
    1. Can I record so that the measure line is just time (second or minutes)?
    2. Also, last night, i recorded straight threw 90 min or more....and at 1000 measures, it stopped recording and I did not know and lost a lot of cool stuff because I kept playing.
So, my main question (Garage Band 2.02) I wish to set up to record live piano, no measures or metronone, and have unlimited time once I click RECORD. (I am using mikes through a presonus interface, etc.)

  • Recording a live piano performance with GB and iMac internal mic

I am a complete novice with GB. My iMac sits six feet away from my piano, and in a few days my piano teacher will play a concert on it. I am into digital photography, but have no video recording equipment. Can I record this performance using GB and my iMac internal mic, and, if so, how? I would understand completely if you refer me to an article or other secondary source where this is covered.

You will certainly benefit from the mic upgrade. Be aware that most "studio mics" require a microphone preamplifier to bring the level up to something that your computer will be able to see (as well as to provide power if the mic requires it). If the connector is the type that looks like a headphone plug which will fit in your computer input, you are probably ok.
The recording quality will normally be determined by the format and settings instead of the application you are using to record. Stick to 16 (or 24) bit, stereo .aif files and you should be fine. The standard for CD recording is 44.1kHz.
For some information and advice on recording piano, there is an article on my website here: http://doghouseNYC.com/articles/piano1.htm
    Good luck!

  • Live Recording with mics and Software Instruments

Has anyone used the Software Instruments in GB to play live, while recording the Software Instruments direct and live (Real Instruments) as well?
I'm thinking about getting a FirePod or similar, to record my band live using several mics and playing and recording Software Instruments all at once. I'm concerned that this set up might have too much latency and make the Software Instruments not playable with my band live, and perhaps all this might make my iMac G5 bog down.
Anyone have any experiences with any or all of this kind of use of GarageBand with an audio/MIDI interface?
    iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey Hang,
Sorry if I'm talking in circles. That post was early!
I'd like to be able to use the built-in Software Instruments live and record that MIDI as well as the live tracks at the same time. However, I could deal with using my own keyboards for the live sounds and just record the MIDI from them while recording the live tracks too, if that makes the system work. For instance, if the part I wanted was a piano, and the Software Instrument piano used too much processor power, I could "record" with a smaller instrument that wasn't such a hog. Then, in mixing, I'd use the Software Instrument I wanted for the keyboard part. Live, my real keyboard could provide the piano for all to hear.
    Am I making sense yet?
I suppose one thing I could do is something I was thinking of doing already. I could get one of the $40 MIDI-to-USB interfaces to record with the band. Right now, I'm just using a stereo mic set up to record stereo into GB. I could add MIDI and see what happens. Heck, I could enable 6 more real instrument tracks at the same time and see what happens! Then I would know it was possible on the iMac at least.

  • Can I capture and record live feed on "Final Cut Pro X"?

I am an intern at my church and we are wanting to finish upgrading everything to mac at the church but we are needing a program that can capture live feed and later edit it so that I can create TV programs; hence, why I am needing to know can Final Cut Pro X capture live feed and record it? Along with that I need to know can I import avi. video files into Final Cut Pro X and it still allow me to edit them for our TV program? Thank you ahead of time for all of your help. Right now we are capturing in SD and I need to make sure it will also not be a problem capturing in SD and will make a smooth transition when we go to HD.

    See here:
Re: import live video hvr v1e
The above discusses HDV over firewire which is high def,  DV will be the same  deal.
So it depends on what type of camera you are going to use.
If you jump to an AVCHD USB cam the game changes.
So far I'm not aware of a direct import method.
There are workarounds with additional equipment at present.

  • Time shifting and record live stream

    Hellow everyone,
I would like to stream videos for my viewers and them have a abiliti to timeshifting live stream.
Can I use live application for timeshifting? Or I should use livepkgr to do that.
For archive and play on the VOD mode I like to stream live and record at same time. in the livepkgr I see in the stream folder create a stream file with the f4f extention automaticaly whoever in the live application I should call application.record on the FMS to save live stream on the server.
Please advise me the better solution to archive and time shifting.
    Many Thanks.

livepkgr application for for HTTP streaming...
f youjust want to stream over rtmp use live application and code to record the stream...recording is pretty simple in AMS just call Stream.get() s.record(...) s.play() where s is the stream which you are recording...
    application.onPublish = function(clientObj, streamObj) {      trace("recording started...");       var strName = "recorded_" + streamObj.name;      var s = Stream.get(strName);      if (s == undefined )           return;         s.onStatus = function(info)      {           trace(info.code);      }           if (!s.record("record"))      {           s.trace("record failed.");      }            s.play(streamObj.name, -1, -1, true); }

I would think a 15" with the i7 CPU. You can get a 13" with the i7 CPU but the 15" has a dedicated graphic chip along with the intergrated one.
You will also need to upgrade the hard drive to a faster 7200RPM model instead of the standard 5400RPM model that comes with all MBPs. The Sibelius website recommends the 7200RPM or a SSD. You will also be better off installing 8GBs of RAM.
Both of those upgrades can be made after you buy a MBP for much less then Apple charges for the same upgrades and you get to keep the original RAM and hard drive.

  • Audio recording, chipmunk voice and stuttering?!

Hi all, I use the Elgato Game Capture HD with my MacBook Pro to record gaming videos. I use a standard USB headset with a mic to record live commentary over the top, this setup has always worked fine for me, until yesterday.
After recording my video, when I started editing it, I realised that in recording, the audio had caused my voice to go extremely high pitched, stutter and therefore out of sync with the video and then after about 5 minutes it just completely cut off.
I thought at first this was a problem with the mic, so I used my more professional mic which is a Zoom Handy Recorder H2 and plugged it in via USB. Same problem. So then I thought, it must be the Elgato recording software. Tried using Audacity to record some audio, it was fine once and then same problems. Which makes me think it's something to do with my MacBook?!
If anyone's had a similar problem or would even know how I would start to tackle this issue, i'd be incredibly grateful!
    Thanks in advance!

I have a 5c, and here is how I was able to trim a test recording:
    1. Open the recording file in Voice Memos.
    2. Tap "Edit" at the bottom. It's between the arrow-up symbol and trash can.
    3. On the right side, near the bottom-right corner you'll see a blue box with a round blue dot at the top-left corner of it, and another one at the bottom-right. This is the Trim button. Tap it.
    4. You should now see the recording with the "wavelengths", a vertical blue line (with a blue dot at top and bottom), and on each side a red line (also with red dot at top/bottom).
    5. Touch the left red line and you'll notice you can touch/drag it to the beginning point of your desired portion of the recording.
    6. Touch the right red line and touch/drag it for the recording's end point.
    7. Hit the Play button to play just the trimmed portion, making sure it's what you want.
    8. Once it's what you want, touch "Trim". Up pops "Trim Original" or "Save as New Recording".
On emailing it, go to the trimmed copy and click the arrow-up symbol, which will allow you to either message or email it.
EDIT: I found you can name your recording file to what you want by tapping the default name of it. A cursor will appear where then you can delete and retype a custom file name. Great for emailing so you recipients will know what it is by looking at it.

  • New to iMovie, create live video and audio?

Hello, I am trying to create a video of a live musical performance to post on youtube and have figured out how to use the isight to get a video but can I use the biult in mics to record live audio with the video?

    Hello, Nateomite
As Karsten says, you will certainly get better results and much more convenience with a camcorder.
However, if you decide to use your MacBook, the built-in mic can record audio with your video:
in iChat: iChat > Video > Record Chat records both video and audio.
      in iMovie: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/7.0/en/10172.html
tells you how to record using your MacBook's built-in iSight (and mic.)
Other movie/video recording apps may work differently, but most allow sound with video.
