Recording LPs with Intel iMac

I want to digitize my LPs, 45s, and 78's onto CDs and MP3 files. I have seen in Consumer Reports that this is possible with a special turntable and software. Before I invest, does anyone have any insights or recommendations for doing this?

As has been said if you have lots to do, or value your vinyl steer clear of those USB decks.
Absolutely. If you have a vinyl collection worth preserving, you probably also have a better turntable, phono cartridge and phono preamp than could be expected in an integrated turntablecartridge+preamp+A2DUSB package. Much better to use your existing audio system and spend your money on a higher quality audio-to-USB interface.
I haven't been shopping for one lately, but a quick "google USB audio" found this VERY interesting candidate. $125 from amazon.com. (As usual, the German site has the most complete specs.):

A 24-bit A-to-D is a huge plus for working with stuff like vinyl LPs. You can set the recording level very conservatively (to avoid digital overload), and still be assured of getting at least 16-bit (CD-quality) dynamic range.
I have no experience with this product, but TASCAM is the pro-audio division of TEAC, and has been a major player in the recording industry for nearly 40 years. There are also many other USB-audio interfaces -- from big names in audio such as Edirol (Roland), M-Audio, Emu, etc. They're all likely to have much better A-to-D converters than a "USB turntable" -- and a general-purpose USB/audio interface can be used for all sorts of stuff beyond digitizing vinyl.

  • HP Color LaserJet Problems with intel iMac

Can anyone give me advice on the following:-
When I try to print from my wife's new intel iMac 20" to our HP Color LaserJet 2550L, it doesn't work and print center gives me the following error message ... "The process "hppostprocessing" terminated unexpectedly on signal 5" .
The printer is connected directly to the iMac via USB. It's not on a network.
I ran the HP Color LaserJet installer from the original CD that came with the printer and when that didn't work I downloaded another (latest) Color LaserJet installer (dated 2004) from the HP website. Still getting the same error message from PrintCenter.
When I look at the HP installer log, it appears that the installer tried several times without success to install plugins into the PPD folder (HD->Library->Printers->PPD).
After trying installation and checking out my PPD folder (above) there is nothing in it.
This printer has been (still) working fine with our older 20inch iMac.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Same happened with my photosnart. Here is part of the email from HP
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I understand from your email that you are not able to print to your
photosmart 1218 printer from your new imac.
I believe you are correct when you mention the glitch between the new
    Intel processor in the iMac.
I have checked the Apple website and noted the pre-installed printer
drivers that ship with this operating system, do NOT include drivers for
the Photosmart 1218 printer. There are Gimp print drivers available for
the Photosmart P1000 printer. They may work, but provide only basic
printer functionality. (see the Apple document listed below).
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303057#hpdrivers
I understand that our engineers are investigating the driver issue with
the Intel-based Macs, however, I cannot provide you with an expected
date of resolution. Your printer was manufactured in 2000, and the most
recent drivers are from Aug 2005. These drivers were created before the
    Intel based macs were available.

  • SilverKeeper backup doesn't work correctly with Intel iMac and 10.4.8

I use SilverKeeper 1.1.4 to backup daily to a LaCie drive. But it will no longer do automatic backups (that is, wake computer from sleep at 6am before I start the day) since I migrated from PowerBook G4 to new Intel iMac 24". It only starts the backup when I come and wake computer, not by itself, which it had done before...The SilverKeeper people have been unable to help me.
New Intel iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Could very well be that SilverKeeper's scheduling function no longer works with 10.4.8. Let me suggest alternatives that do:
    1. Deja Vu
    2. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    3. Synchronize! Pro X
All are universal binaries. You can find them at www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com.

  • Recording LPs with smart recorder and sound quality off.....

    Hi,
I have X-Fi Extreme music card on my PC and trying to record some LPs with SmartRecorder. These are classical LPs and I find that when played back, the orchestra (violins, choir, etc) sound like this was recorded in a tin can. Any ideas why this would be? I connected all my cables accordingly and?am still?getting this problem.

Which type of connection are you using there?
Do you have preamp stage w/ RIAA there before soundcard (you have connected the PC into your stereo system just the way
like you connect a casette recorder or you have connected your turntable w/ RIAA preamp directly into soundcard) or
have you connected your turntable (w/o RIAA + preamp) directly into soundcard?
If you're using the latter method, you need to have EQ w/ RIAA compensation added into signal (you need some ASIO/VST
capable recording software which allows you add FXs into signal (Hermann Seib's VSTHost) and an EQ capable for
    compensation curve +20dB (20Hz) - -20 dB (20 kHz) (ddmf:IIEQ). It's possible that you
can't get levels set high enough w/o adding some gain plug-in into signal path. You can use Sonalksis FreeG VST (stereo)
for this (in VSTHost, place (route) the FreeG either after or before the EQ (try which works better for you)).
Also, check if the recording source is set correctly (w/ "What U Hear" option you get all added effects added
into signal (EAX, CMSS) so it's best to set input as Line-In) and turn all effects OFF.
If you record into lossy format as mp3 or wma, check that the bitrate is set high enough (I suggest you use bitrates
256 - 320). Also, do not use addons like Chrystalizer, etc..
    If needed some software, http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showpost.php?p=282263&postcount=7

  • Dual networks, express and extreme problem with Intel iMac accessing both

I have two airport networks setup to two different ISP's. One is setup using two Airport Expresses with a printer hung off one. The other is setup with an Airport Extreme with two USB disks.
I have a G4 iBook 14" laptop and a MacPro 17" Intel laptop that see and can bee switched between both networks utilizing Internet Connect. They are running OS X 10.4.11.
The other system is an Intel iMac 20" (late 2006) running OS X 10.5.1. The only wireless network it sees is the Airport Extreme. This is frustrating because I want to be able to switch to the Express network to print and cannot get the iMac to recognize the network. Before upgrading to 10.5.1, I could, on occasion, see the other network, now I can not.
Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to fix it? I believe it is operating in 802.11n, but have no way to verify this.

I miss posted this in windows. I reposted this in the Airport Extreme.

  • Typeit4me doesn't work with Intel iMac?

I've tried installing the most-recent version (2.3) twice now, and regardless the Typeit4me icon does not appear in the menubar - as it should - it does not show-up under the Input Menu section of the International System Preference, and no typed shortcuts prompt any typing.
Does anyone know of a fix, or a patch to allow it to work with the Intel iMac?
    Thanks.

Well, Typeit4me doesn't - that I'm aware of or have ever seen anyway. Of course, the MouseWorks software for my trackball doesn't work (that is a System Preference), but at-least I can see that.
Any idea on when such items will be able to work? I'm a little surprised Rosetta doesn't help here too.

  • Has anyone got HK iSub v1. to work with Intel iMac?

System preferences does not see the device at all. Have tried different ports with and without USB hubs both through a Series 1.0 and Series 2.0 with no luck. Any suggestions? Or is it time to retire the thing? Pity though it sounds great and still looks good!
    Any advice appreciated.
    -RG

I had the same problem and got it straightened out at the local Genius Bar! Did you transfer your folders from a previous Mac on your Intel iMac? The prefs transferred over too and may be corrupt.
    1) Create a new user and give it admin privledges
    2) Under "Library", drag and drop the Audio (which may not be necessary) and Preference folders onto desktop.
    Log out and restart.
Log back in as yourself and let it fly! By dragging the Prefs folder onto desktop, at restart your iMac rebuilds the Prefs and overwrites previous corrupted Prefs.
Now I need to figure out why my Sony CyberShot isn't recognized on my USBs! Maddening!

  • Is iMac G5 (no iSight) harddrive interchangable with Intel iMac (white)?

I have a new (used) Intel iMac, and I'd like to put the harddrive from an iMac G5 (no iSight) into it. Do both these computers use the same type of harddrive? Can I just swap them? Thanks.

I have recently done the same thing with no problems. They are both SATA drives, so there would be no problem with the system recognising them, my only concern because of the "close to the edge" limitations regarding iMac power supplies was whether the larger drive would draw too much current and exceed the safe limit for the system. I checked with the manufacturer's web site and they both drew the same power so there was no problem. I went from a 250GB to a 400GB drive.

  • Comparing MacBook Pro screen with Intel iMac

I'm wondering if anyone here that has a MacBook Pro has had a chance to compare its quality to another mac's screen. I've been working on trying to colour-calibrate my MacBook Pro using SuperCal, and I've noticed that the colour on the MacBook Pro is nowhere near as nice as on the intel iMac.
Obviously expecting a laptop screen to look as good as the larger iMacs is a bit much, but I was still very surprised at the difference in quality.
    Anyone else noticed this?

The MacBook Pro screen is not as bright or vibrant as any plug-in type LCD I've compared it to.
However, it is much nicer than any of my previous laptops (including an Aluminum Powerbook G4). It is significantly brighter, with somewhat better color.
It would be nice if the laptop had a better backlight that could turn on when plugged in, but that's probably up there with my wish for a 2nd processor that would turn on during plug-in as well...
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Adobe Acrobat InDesign Crashes with intel iMac

I have been having numerous InDesign crashes with no apparent pattern (sometimes it happens when I use key commands and other times it just shuts down). Any ideas/help? Thank you.

    Hi!
Not sure which version of InDesign you are using; and some applications
had issues when they were not quite ready for use in both Intel and PPC
Macintosh computers. An older version may cause a problem in a new Mac.
There may be several things not quite right; but there are several things
that you failed to mention (best stated in forum linked below) and those
could be: model, processor, RAM installed, OS X version (10.5.x, etc.)
[Something as basic as using Disk Utility (see folder in apps) and choose
it to run "repair disk permissions" may help; but it may be more involved.]
The question you have may be better and more accurately addressed in
    this Intel® iMac forum: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
Hopefully someone there more acquainted with these issues specific to
your hardware and the software you are attempting to use, has detailed ideas.
    Best regards!

  • Software compatibility with Intel iMac

I know it's rather early in the game, as it were, but does anyone know if Appleworks comes bundled with the new Intel iMacs. I don't see it listed, but could this be an oversight? Or is Apple getting away from it? I have used it for quite some time and I have many documents in Appleworks, but have no idea what I'd do with them if I got a new Intel iMac--sure, convert them, but to what? I don't look forward to having to "tweak" each doc, as I have had to do in the past when converting from one program to another . . . . Anyone know?

Not yet. Peggy, one of the Appleworks mavens here, is at macworld and is going to try to find out for us.

  • Which USB / Firewire ADC to use with intel iMacs?

Specifically, I want to hook my guitar up to my intel imac - and am trying to figure out what the available hardware options are. ( specifically, which units have working intel drivers )

it seems that this problem is greater than expected, I hav the same problem, my Nokia 6021 & Nokia Pc-suite doesn't work with IVT Bluesoleil, a friend of mine has the same problem, we can't find the answer...
anyone has an idea for us???

  • Trouble with intel iMacs and OD binding

When setting up 12 of our new iMacs at school this fall, I've run into a problem. Once bound to our OD server, the machines will hang intermittently during boot (before a login screen).
In this lab we have 16 eMacs running 10.4.7, and now 12 intel iMacs running 10.4.7. The OD server is 10.4.7 server.
All machines were first bound to our school's AD server and tested. All logged in for two days of students.
Then today the OD server was finally up and running for mcx settings. The 16 eMacs were added without problem. The iMacs were added, but now if they are restarted they often hang. Rebooting them may fix it. Sometimes they need to be rebooted several times.
Once an intel iMac makes it to the log in screen they act as they should. They authenticate first to AD, then get whatever mcx settings they need from the OD.
Tried: clearing out all bindings and caches and starting fresh.
Note: The OD master is not bound to the AD, The OD server's kerberos record is disabled as outlined in this help article (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300765)
    Any help?

You don't really need the old OS 9 printer utility - other than to know how many prints your printer has made. It prints fine in OS X at it's best resolution.
I am using this printer everyday w/ an intel iMac.
Of course ... you need to connect your 16/600 to your network through an ethernet hub.
In System Preferences - Network - make AppleTalk active.
Then go to the Print & Fax preferences and set up new printer.
The 16/600 will show up there.

  • HP Deskjet 990cxi crippled with Intel iMac

Has any one been able to get the above printer to be fully operational with an Intel iMac?
I have lost the ability to print in draft and have not been able to get two sided printing to work although it should(under Layout) using the Gimp Driver.
I have two versions of the printer installed one with HP's Driver 2.7.1 and the other with Gimp's 5.0.0 beta
Have also sent an E-Mail to HP with no reply as yet.
My G4 Powerbook with HP's 2.7.1 driver prints just fine over my wireless network.

According to the above article that I linked, the latest HP driver for the Deskjet 990cxi would have been included with the Tiger 10.4.4 that came installed on your iMac Intel:
"All included printer drivers are installed by default with Mac OS X 10.4.4"
I have the HP Deskjet 6840 and it is on the same list using that same 3.3 driver. When I open Applications>Utilities>Printer Setup Utility and then select (highlight) my printer, wait a few seconds and the "Show Info" button above becomes bold so that I can click on it, the report shows Driver Version: 3.3
I did not install 3.3, it was just there in the OS when I unpacked and started up the iMac.
Also, this list from the HP website indicates that the latest 990cxi driver was built into the Tiger software. I did the same search as you at the HP website and see the same thing you found, that it states that the driver is 2.7.1, however, in looking at the date, it is a 2005 date, so that is old, pre-iMac Intel information that I'm sure HP will someday get around to updating. As an enormous company, selling just tons of quality printers, HP has to closely cooperate with Apple to see that Mac users have available, through Apple, the latest updated drivers and software at all times.
