Recording Macbook audio on Garageband for a podcast

Me and a friend have started a gaming podcast and I can't work out if I'm able to record audio playing on my Macbook pro directly into the recording.
A basic example would be to play a video on Youtube and have the audio from that record whilst being able to talk over the audio using microphones. It would also be nice to be able to play the audio introducing each segment and not have to worry about dragging the pre recorded files into the timeline.
An alternative would be to play the audio on an ipad and have that record using a mini jack cable plugged into the headphone/mic input on the Macbook.
Can this be done? I don't seem to be able to find anything using Google.
I'm using Garageband 11 (ver 6.0.5)
Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011
OSX Maveriks 10.9.3
Many Thanks

Download a free (great app) called Soundflower, which enables routing audio from one app to another.
When you install this app you get new virtual audio inputs and outputs in your operating system called soundflower 2ch and soundflower 64ch. For most purposes you'd use the 2ch option. Go to system preferences>sound>output and set it to soundflower 2ch.
Now your audio from youtube etc. goes into this virtual output rather than to your speakers or headphones (so you won't hear it just yet). Next in Garageband, open up the preferences dialog box and go to the audio/midi tab. Set the input to soundflower 2ch (now GB is getting the audio sent in from the other end of the soundflower virtual channel) but if you want to hear what's going on make sure the output is set to either headphones port, internal speaker, or something that you'll be able to listen to.
Soundflower is available at

  • Record Keyboard MIDI using GarageBand for iPad

See this video using GB4iPad to record keyboard MIDI:-
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQlbjFxdxGE

I just discovered the arpeggiator feature today, and indeed, as gb 1111 mentioned, it doesn't work via MIDI input!!!! An incredible oversight! Perhaps an option to allow this can be added in an update, Apple?
I am forwarding gb 1111's concern to the GarageBand for iPad feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/garageband_ipad.html. Let's all do the same, in the hope of further improvements and refinements to GarageBand for iPad by Apple!

  • Will we ever be able to send iMovie audio to GarageBand for editing?

I shoot music videos by filming myself playing guitar in iMovie, shift the audio over to GarageBand to add drums, etc. and then bring it back into imovie. I've been doing this via my pc and iTunes transfers, but it would be sweet if I could do it all in IOS. (The recent update allowing GB audio to be imported into iMovie has reduced my transfer issue by half, but it would be great to allow transfers both ways.) Anyone have a workaround for now?

This would be great to eb able to do.
Then we could add fades and layer sound.
Please do bring this up to Apple:

  • Recording audio on garageband

HELP! I've recorded audio on garageband as a podcast using the female voice and it sounds pretty good when I export it to my itunes. I tried emailing it to someone else though and they said they couldn't open it in itunes or windows media. They were finally able to open it in QuickTime but the volume was so low even when they turned it up they could hardly hear me speaking. I need to save it as a normal mp3 i think so I can send it to people and they can listen to the audio in whatever program they use but i dont know how to do this and make the volume louder. thanks for the advice!

Go to share in menu and choose Export to disk and choose mp3.
To make it a little louder you can try boosting the track volume and master volume some. But if it's loud enough when you play it in itunes it should be the same when someone else listens to it in itunes.

  • How to I synchronize video from Imovie and audio from garageband?

I recorded the audio in Garageband and the video thru my video camera. I then captured the video in Imovie and attached the audio to the project from garageband. I can't seem to be able to synchronize both.I clicked on the green area and clicked "trim" and when the waveform appeared, I moved the handle back and forth, but video and audio never synced. I also went to my project and tried to pull the video or the audio back and forth, but it also never synced.
What are the steps to take to achieve this?

If you want the video and audio to automatically sync, Final Cut Pro X is the tool of choice, but it is more expensive than iMovie, and it has a big learning curve.
With iMovie, you can still do this by showing the wave forms and lining them up visually. There is a nuance that in iMovie, you must have video. You cannot have sound that exists outside a video element. For you, this means that if your GB track is the same length or longer than your iMovie video track, you cannot shift it side to side. This is easily fixed by adding some dummy clips before and after your video so there is room to slide the track back and forth. You can find these "Black Background" clips (and others) under the Maps tab.
I recently had to sync up some audio with video. Here is a post that explains in detail how I did it. It may help. Unfortunately, in my case, I was syncing the audio from 2 cameras. This is easier than syncing video with an audio track, but some of the tricks may still apply.
If anything still does not make sense, please ask.
One more thing. When you have an audio track like one created in GB, it is not simple in iMovie to delete a chunk of it and delete the corresponding video at the same time. Once again, this is a task better suited for Final Cut Pro X.  It is possible to export your movie to the Media Browser and then continue editing it in GB, so that may be an option for you.

  • Can't record Audio while recording an Audio Instrument?

Okay, so I never expected this to be a problem. I've just recently begun recording multiple tracks at the same time (all audio-only until this point). I'm sure there's a really simple solution to this, but I can't seem to find it.
Today I wanted to record a few strums on my guitar and then play a few chords on the keyboard, going back and forth. I armed the track for the guitar (it will record by itself, by the way) and then armed the track for the keyboard (which will also record by itself). I hit record, did my thing, and the audio for the guitar just didn't record. All I had was MIDI.
Both tracks appeared armed for recording.
I had the Audio Instrument track currently selected, so I figured maybe it got priority. If I selected the Audio track though, the Audio Instrument track was no longer considered armed.
Is this just something I can't do? Or maybe there's an option I can change for this in Preferences or something?
    Thanks in advance.

Yes. I'm 100% certain that I'm getting the signal from the guitar. The levels change as I strum both before and during recording.
-If I have the guitar's track both selected and armed, it will record.
-If I have the guitar track armed with a different audio track selected, it will record.
-If I have the guitar track armed with an Audio Instrument track selected, only the Audio Instrument records.
-I cannot arm both the guitar track and an Audio Instrument track with the guitar track selected, because as soon as I select the guitar track, the Audio Instrument track(s) become unarmed.
This is not a matter of me getting no sound out of the recording- there is simply no recording. (And during recording, the little dialog box doesn't pop up to tell me that audio is recording.)
It does seem simple enough, and yet it doesn't work. I can record multiple audio tracks, but for some reason once I throw a MIDI track into the mix I can't record audio simultaneously.
I have no reason to believe this is anything other than Logic as I can record both separately (without altering the configuration of how I have things plugged into my computer at all). I just can't seem to do them together.
Surely Logic can be used to record something like... MIDI keyboard and vocals simultaneously, right? This has to be a feature.
If you don't quite get what my problem is, open Logic and test out the bullet points at the top of this message. That should help you understand.

  • Any free video hosting services meant for iTunes podcasts?

Any free video hosting services meant for iTunes podcasts? I have found free audio hosting ones for iTunes podcasts, but are there any videos ones? THANKS!

The best I found was after searching YouTube for, how to prepare a video podcast to submit to iTunes Directory.
Several instructional videos come up that are worth watching. The two I initially found are recommended are podbean.com and podomatic.com.
I tried podbean.com, which easily generated the RSS feed iTunes requires, which I was able to successfully copy into the iTunes store line on Submit a Podcast to the iTunes Directory. Podbean has many helpful instructions on how to use their site and submit your video to iTunes.
Since I wasted 3 weeks trying to understand https://discussions.apple.com/message/23110806#23110806, other apple.com insructions, searching the internet, calling senior advisors in Apple Care (none of whom knew or could read this apple.com page either) I was really happy just to find one way to be able to do it. And easily too.
The only way you can possibly get an answer from Apple is to email [email protected], the iTunes Store says, since there is no phone support. Then I was told to wait 10 working days for a reply.
Thank goodness I finally searched YouTube. (There were many other confusing and difficult instructions on the internet.)
After uploading small video files onto my new site at podbean.com, at least I got 3 short videos onto iTunes that show in my computer's iTunes podcast subscriptions and they downloaded successfully. I understand I must wait a few days to get an ID from iTunes directory, which will then list my videos to the pubic as available in ITunes.
Podbean.com does have up to 100 mb free web hosting. (No video can bemore than 30 mb.) But it does allow everything iTunes needs, including a cover photo and description. All future feeds will be automatiically seen by iTunes through the podbean url that was given you, that you pasted into iTunes when you first submitted your podcast. So you only have to do this once, I understand.
Podbean wants to entice you to purchase more space so they show various prices.
I'm still wondering if somehow I could link my existing youtube videos (or facebook, myspace, vimeo, Flickr duplicates) in a field somewhere and link to them. Maybe?
Now that I know to use a web host that generates all the xml and RSS feed behind the scenes (since I don't know how) I'll explore these options, and the other site, podomatic.com.
Let us know if there are other good, free ones for video.
(One YouTube video said mypodcast.com is good for mp3 audio podcasts, FYI.)

  • How do you record video with usb mic and have the audio from garageband be the sound when recording and not just your normal voice but garage band effects for youtube?

    Hi Life93,
What you describe would be possible by recording your video, then removing the audio from it and adding audio from GarageBand once the video is in iMovie (I presume here that you are using iMovie for your video production. Other applications may need different methods.)

  • Recording iChat Audio for Podcast

I'm struggling to find a solution for recording audio for podcast interviews and am thinking that perhaps there's an easy answer I'm overlooking.
I have no problem connecting to an interview subject using iChat, however, my voice levels are only 50 to 75 percent as strong as the subject's. This same situation occurs when I'm using Skype. I have all of my input levels set to maximum.
Tests with Ecamm Call Record and Audio Hijack Pro have a similar problem.
Also, is there a way to record audio directly from iChat with these third-party apps?

    Umm, a Pretty problem.
I would first test with several Buddies to get their opinion on how loud you seem to them.
I can turn up my volume but it still requires that I speak as loud as I would in a conversation and face the Mic. If I sit too far back from the mic I get too quiet no matter how I talk.
I find this with people who test with me who confirm they have System Preferences > Sound > Input volume cranked up. (the worst are Australians sitting outside on the veranda for Breakfast and trying to show me the view with a laptop)
As I have two Macs sitting quite close to each other I do get feedback if I connect the two in a Chat so I have to pay attention to the volume setting.
Having said all that if the resultant recording seems too low in Volume at You end I would personally use iMovie 6 to teak the volume up when I spoke - either by Extracting it and cutting it up and increasing those portions or by using the purple and yellow dots to do so.
The Eccam page actually says this...
    Create a Podcast
Conference Recorder makes it easy convert your QuickTime movies into MP3 or AAC format. Simply drag a recorded QuickTime movie to the included "Convert to MP3" or "Convert to AAC" utilities, and let them do the work for you. Additionally, Conference Recorder records each side of the conversation on separate tracks, allowing for easy post-editing. The included "Split Movie Tracks" utility will automatically export each movie track to a separate file.
This would mean that you could turn up the track for your Audio in Quicktime Pro
Launch the file but not Playback
Go to the Window Menu > Show Movie Properties
    Select the Audio Setting tab.
Increase the Volume db on one Audio track and see if it your speech by playing.
Adjust as required (Change track if required).
Save File to save the adjustment.
    Hope this helps.

  • MacBook Audio Output Not Working, Except for Garageband?

    Good day everyone,
I have a 13-inch MacBook '08, current version 10.6.8 (can't upgrade to OS X Mavericks – hardware is too old), and I've had a serious problem, and I feel that I've tried EVERYTHING to fix it.
My Macbook audio output does not work AT ALL while trying to stream video (i.e. YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) or listen to music. When I play with the audio adjustment buttons, it doesn't even make the "popping" sound. It DOES however have audio output when I open Garageband and play the instruemnts i.e. Grand Piano. It also plays the "start up" sound when I boot my MacBook up. Otherwise, the audio seems to not work at all.
I've played with the "Sound" settings on "System Preferences." I've played with the audio jack (note: there's not red light, so that's not the problem), I've blown into the hole, stuck paper clips in there and fiddled around... nothing. Please help, I'll take any advice!
    Thanks in advance.

Well, even though the input jack had no red light, I performed the actions demonstrated on YouTube in the video "How to fix macbook red light head phone jack" and the problem is fixed.

  • Problems recording audio through garageband

Hello Mac world, I'm completely new to the Mac computers, and just purchased my MacBook Pro with a 2.3 ghz quad-core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and 512 GB SSD, so I don't think specs are the problem to my issue. I purchased the Mac to record audio, and also purchased an audio interface to record through (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2). I have downloaded the most recent drivers for that. I connected my guitar through the instrument input, connected the interface through USB, and connected headphones into the headphone jack. I can hear the audio playback while I play through the headphones, but my problem relates to the actual recording process, as well as the audio playback.
When recording, I get the following error: "Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI - Sample rate 41068 recognized. Check conflict between GarageBand and external device". I read that GarageBand requires a sample rate of 41000, but I don't know how to check/change that. I also can't hear the metronome or the count in while I play/record. My input source is Mono 1 (Scarlett 2i2 USB), instead of Stereo (Scarlett 2i2 USB) in both my GarageBand preferences and my System Preferences.
Next, I have a problem hearing the audio playback after recording. Again, I can hear the guitar while I play, but not after I record. Also, like I mentioned above, I can't hear any metronome or count in.
I also successfully recorded using a MIDI controller when connecting directly from the controller to computer using USB. Again, I don't think that my system specs are an issue, but I am completely new to the Mac side of things, and am not sure where I am going wrong with this.
Does anyone have any clues as to what the issue may be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Adam

WO HOO I answered my own question.
I found this little gem of a tutorial:

...which outlines how to route DV audio into garageband using soundflower. Worked like a charm!

  • Alternative to GarageBand for creating chapters in podcasts?

Now that GarageBand no longer has podcast-creation-specific features, I'm wondering if there's another way to create chapters in podcasts. Anyone know? I know I can just keep using the old version, but I'd like to find a solution that hasn't been discontinued.

    Hi Photosphere,
Apologies for the delayed response, my daughter was born on Sunday.
Thanks for taking the time to try our product.
Could you please explain what podcasting features you feel are missing?
Some of the podcasting features that many thousands of our professional and amateur podcasting customers appreciate are:
    * Create chapters (which is what this thread started with)
    * Auto-leveling of recording based on Loudness
    * User-friendly interface
    * Voice Profiler that analyses your speak and sets the EQ and compression for you so you sound the best every time
    * 1-click podcast allows you to upload your podcast to multiple destinantions (SoundCloud account, Podcast server, FTP etc) with one click in the correct format, amnd updates your RSS feed at the same time
    * Extremely fast support response
You might find more of the features you are looking for in our Video Tutorials: http://hindenburgsystems.com/training-videos
    Addressing your comments:
    - Regarding pricing - unfortunately the podcasting and radio markets are not that big. Selling it for "a decent price and getting more customers" assumes that there are a lot of people that actually would buy software to make a podcast. Our analysis is that this is not the case - if we lower our price we will not sell significantly more copies of our software. $95 for a highly advanced software tool is not much compared to the price of a microphone or whatever recording device you use for your podcast, is it?
    - "Your website is out of date, the registered trademark of your company site is 2011" - Normally a trademark date is the date a trademark is registered - it doesn't really change. I'm not quite sure what you are refering to.
    - "I find it hilarious that you chose the company name to be Hindenburg Systems... Hindenburg crashed and burned" - A little radio history, the event of the Hindenburg crashing is one of the most important daes in radio/recorded story history. It was the first ever mobile news report and the first ever report broadcast coast-to-coast. Besides that, Hindenburg is a surname, so there are other connotations than the limited history of one event in Lakehurst in 1937.
I hope that clarifies things a bit?

  • Can Garageband for iOS record 24bit? (24-bit)

Can garageband for iOS record 24bit? I see other competitors can so wondering if Garageband? Would be a shame
if it can't as of the whole scaling up opening sessions in Logic for further work..
    Thanks!

I can't find a defitive support docuemnt from Apple, but as far as I can tell the camera kit can handle 44.1 or 48 kHz 16-bit audio. No evidence of 24-bit support in GB for iOS, either for import or export. Uncompressed audio input files are expected to be in 44.1kHz/16-bit.
