Recording Midi to a Sequencer

I have been attempting to record a midi file created in Logic Express 8 to a sequencer via the M -Audio Uno Midi interface. I am able to get the metronome to sound at the sequencer but the midi file information is not being passed. The M - Audio Midi in and Midi out leds are on indicating, the M Audio inteface software is up to date for 10.5.5, the midi out flashes when the metronone is on, but no midi data from the multi track file is being passed for recording. I have been able to perform this with a PC based free midi mixer previously.
It has got to be something simple can anyone help?
Is there a setting in Logic Express 8 that I need to change to pass the midi data for recoding on the sequencer?
Thank you in advance.
Mike.

I am having exactly the same problem. Using Garageband with 10.5.5. Tried the UNO, also tried a similar USB MOTO device -- neither worked even LED indicators showed it was working. I went back to the music store and was able to get MIDI to work properly by using one of their M-Audio USB Keyboard controllers, but I don't want to buy a new keyboard.
Any advice on getting a midi interface to work with 10.5.5?

  • I can record midi data from my Mason & Hamlin Piano Disc Pro Record through my MOTU Traveller into Logic but Logic won't send midi data out to the MOTU Traveller to the Piano Disc player

    Hello All,
I can record midi data from my Mason & Hamlin Piano Disc Pro Record through my MOTU Traveller into Logic Pro 9.1.8  but Logic won't send the midi data back out to the MOTU Traveller and thus to the Piano Disc player. I got it to playback one time but have no idea how and when it did it was looping or something because the velocity was way high coming back in and the damper pedal was slamming down. When I play a key on the piano the midi "in" light on the Traveller lights up. When I play the track back on my computer no lights blink on the Traveller and when I did the apple midi studio test in utilities when I play a key I get the confirmation signal noise and the Traveller blinks when I click on the down arrow of the Traveller in the Apple midi studio test the midi out light on the traveller never lights and the signal light on the piano does not blink either. No outbound signal at all...
I have messed with every possible parameter I can find and and have had help from one of Piano Disc's premier editors but no luck. The piano was prepped for me on Logic so it would work with my studio.  I'm positive it's my fault and I'm overlooking something really simple and stupid but what!??!
Somebody please help.  Thank you all in advance for ANY ideas you might have!

    Blues Piano,
I'm not sure if this will be a help or not.  I'm so Logic Pro wet behind the ears that I make newbies look experienced.  However, I'm not expecting many on the Apple support forums have a PianoDisc system, much less one with the new optical record strip.  While I don't have any record strip on my PianoDisc, I do have a PianoDisc iQ that's only a month old.  I've been playing converted paper scrolls from hundred year old player pianos through it via the MIDI in port of the PianoDisc CPU.  I've found I have to open the MIDI file in Logic Pro (10.0.4) then go to <Track><New External MIDI Track> then copy the existing track to that new external track.  Only then can I see in the Track inspector (defaults left side of screen with the Icon for the instrument) the "Port" parameter.  Then I can select my external MIDI device in that Port selector.
I've also encountered problems with the PianoDisc not using enough force on the notes or using too much force.  To get around this problem, until I understand Logic better, I've been setting minimum and maximum volicities.  To do that I right click on the track and select "Select All."  Then I right click again and select "MIDI" then "MIDI Transform"  then "Velocity Limiter."  In the resulting pop up window in the center is a drop down and you can play with the velocity from "MIN" to "MAX" along with "ADD" "SUBTRACT" etc.
I hope this helps.  I envy you your Mason & Hamlin.  If you need more help on this just email me at pfleischmann at mac dot com.

  • Recording MIDI and Audio at the same time....

I am having an issue recording a simple piano softsynth along with a guide vocal. Whenever I punch in, the audio punches fine but the MIDI/softsynth track hiccups, causing a lag in sound even though the MIDI info seems to record fine. Also, this does not happen when recording MIDI alone-everything punches in fine. Is there some setting I'm missing somewhere or is Logic not able to do this smoothly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Fred,
I bring you my wisdom...Yes there is hope.
What you need to do is set the part you want to bounce into cycle mode. Dont worry, it will not cycle, it just knows now where to start and stop.
Audio and Midi can be recorded at the same time, as long as the midi is from an AU within the mac and not from an external source.
    Good luck,
    Joe
    There is always hope

  • Can't recording  Midi  and Audio at the same time

I'm in GREAT need of help. I can't record midi and audio at the same time. I'm using an M AUDIO project mix I/O. I know this is VERY basic stuff but I can't seem to get it to work.I can record multiple audio at once. ANd I can record midi but not at the same time. PLEASE help . Is there a setting somewhere I need to change ? Thanks
    Tracy

    Hi!
Enable all audio tracks (R) you wish to record. Then make sure you select the audio instrument you are using on the left of the arrange page (track list). If you here your input, hold shift, then highlight (gray) the mentioned audio tracks you wish to record on. When R is red, and the proper tracks are grey, you can record. Hope that made sense!

  • BPM from (externally recorded) Midi recorded drums at incorrect tempo when importing into Logic?

    Hey there
Yesterday I recorded midi drums to a click track for a song into my iPhone using an IK Multimedia iRig Midi.
I had the click track playing from my iPod (that I had recorded as an mp3 at 148pm) and I recorded the drum beat for the whole song at 148bpm into my iPhone using the iRig Midi Recorder app.
I exported the file from my iPhone to my Mac.
    Just to note:
When I play the file through QuickTime it plays fine at 148bpm OK.
If I import the midi file into iTunes, iTunes plays it at 148bpm, and even if I convert it to an mp3 using iTunes, iTunes STILL plays it at 148bpm.
So, if I right mouse click the .midi file>open with Logic
It opens in Logic (With the project set to 120bpm) and the midi track plays at 148bpm, with the metronome playing at 120bpm.
If I then change the BPM of the project to 148bpm, it then changes the BPM of the midi drum file to 183bpm, with the metronome playing at 148bpm.
So, I've tried it another way
Create a new Logic project, set the BPM to 148bpm, then IMPORT the .midi file.
But the midi track plays at 183bpm, with the metronome playing at 148bpm.
So there still the same problem.
I NEED this to line up perfectly with the click track at 148bpm, otherwise I many as well just recorded it live and not to click.
Any suggestions on whats going on here, because something isn't right.
    Thanks

    Just to note
Ive tested the bpm of the song using a little program called VOX (from the exported iTunes mp3 file) and Vox states its 91.51bpm (Making it 183.02 bpm in my mind)
(I initially tested the bpm manually using http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm, so I'm not bad only being 0.02 bpm out)
I've had just tried the following but its still not right.
I imported the midi track into Garageband and set the project initially (Before importing) to 183bpm and assumed I could just then change the projects bpm to 148bpm.
    This doesnt work either.
Upon import of the midi file to GB with the project set at 183bpm, it then plays the midi drum file at approx 227bpm. So its actually sped it up. (tested manual BPM test using http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm )
If I take the projects BPM down to 148bpm, it then plays it at 182bpm (tested manual BPM test using http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm )
If I take the projects BPM down to 120bpm, it then plays it at 148bpm (tested manual BPM test using http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm ). Ah-ha! You might think, so thats fine. Well, yes it plays the drum beat at approx 148bpm, BUT the system still thinks its 120BPM, so it wont line up to the click track at all.
I NEED this to line up perfectyly with the click track of 148bpm, otherwise I many as well just recorded it live and not to click.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  • How to record midi into iPad

Which components do I need to record midi from my keyboard into the iPad (including midi app?)?  I just want to see the recorded sheet music.  The keyboard does have midi output.

Create a master folder to contain your photos. Organize your photos the way you want them putting each group into its own folder inside the master folder.
Then start iTunes on that computer and connect your iPad.
Select your iPad in iTunes on the computer.
Select Photos in the row of tabs on the right side of iTunes.
If you select the master folder, the folders nested inside will all become separate albums on your iPad after you select Apply or Sync.
Instead of copying all the albums to your iPad you can select individual folders to sync to your iPad.

  • Recorded midi file with Garageband keyboard-only the beginning of it plays

    Hi,
When i play a recorded midi sound from the jampack with the midi keyboard included (world music instrum.), once the track is recorded, if I start to play it and press stop in the middle of a long note, and press play again, the last part of this note isn't heard. It's no big deal, but for editing it's a pain in the neck because in order to hear the sound I have to go back to the beginning of that same note. Anyone here knows what this can be due to?, Ive checked the garageband help and not much is said about that...
    Thanks for the help.
    Patrick.

It's not a GB problem, but inherent to midi - the data consists only of "note on" / "note off" events, not continuous information about a key being pressed down. So if you start playing your song after the "note on" event, the program has no way of knowing that the key was pressed earlier. It then just ignores the "note off" event.

  • MIDI Setup - I can record MIDI but not hear it.

I have reviewed other posts on the site. No luck getting this going yet. I can record MIDI but can't hear the sound on Playback.
Here are some pics showing my setup. I am using a Roland XP 60 through a Midisport 2X2.
    http://www.guitarpsycho.com/helpwithlogic/
I can see the data was recorded from the keyboard but am not getting any sound when I play back.
This is probably simple but I am not finding the answer here. Any help is appreciated!!!

I am trying to play the Roland sounds. I was able to use the keyboard as a controller using the Quicktime Template which was pretty cool but I want to access any of the Roland sounds.
Are you saying that I should only run the keyboard in and not have a MIDI out connection?
Anyway Thanks! I will check the multi-instrument setup after work and let you all know what I figure out.....hopefully tonight.

  • Can't Record Midi and audio  Simultaneously

I just noticed that I cant record audio and midi simultaneously. I wanted to record a audio vocal track as I was recording a midi piano track but it wouldn't record. If I selected the audio track, the midi track wasn't heard. If I selected the midi track, I could hear the piano, but the audio wouldn't record. Weird. I had to record the midi track, and then go back and arm 2 audio tracks for recording. One for the vocal and the other to convert the midi track into a audio track. I don't understand why I can't record midi and audio at the same time. I am using a MOTU 896HD for my audio, so I can record up to 8 audio tracks at a time.
Does anyone have any clues as to how to set this up to record midi and audio at the same time?

Setup your audio and midi tracks and then hold the shift key and hit the record button on each of them. Both audio and midi will record.

  • Audio recording also recording midi mute events. How to remove

    Greetings...
I new to Logic, recent convert from Cubase. Anyway I have an odd problem. When I record a stereo audio track and Logic seems to be recording Midi control data events as well. To be specific I have a Tranzport controller that I use to start and stop, mute record etc. Anyway I have an audio track that sets the mute when I start playback, all by itself. Then after a bit it turns off the mute. Seems to be midi commands that were captured as part of the control track that associates with the audio track.
Anyway my problem is that I can't find where this midi mute even is stored in the project. I just want to remove it but I'm at a loss as to where it is stored. I had a control track that I found and removed that and it seemed to take out most of the midi control events but not all of them.
Sorry if my terminology isn't quite Logic but as I said I've come from a different environment.
Anyway I hope this makes sense enough to have one of you point me in the right direction.
All in all I'm really enjoying Logic Express!!

    Hi...
I checked the automation display and it shows 0db throughout so that is not what is muting the output.
However you said "In the midi track did you search in the Even List Editor". Well that is kind of my problem. I don't have a midi track. Only audio takes in a region. When I play back the region the output starts muted (mute light on) then the mute goes off (light off sound on) for a measure and then mutes again for another two measures. Then mute goes off again and the recorded music plays back normally from that point on. This is why I think Logic has captured my control surfaces Midi mute events. I had one take where I pressed the mute button on my Tranzport a couple of times at the start of the recording. These events are captured and repeat each time I play back the recording. I just can't find where those events are stored. The event list only shows the Comp and two takes, no midi control events.
I hope my description makes sense. I'll keep looking. The midi data must be somewhere in there, it's just sitting there laughing at me.
    Thanks..

  • Editing parameters while recording midi?

How do you record midi while changing software instrument parameters, such as resonance drive or modulation, with a control surface? When I try to the changes don't get recorded in the track and arrange area, only the midi notes themselves are recorded and the parameters remained permanently altered. In other words, how do I record the midi and the parameter changes within a track?

    Welcome to the Logic Forum
You can control software instrument parameters a couple ways. After your midi performance is recorded you can go into track automation and draw in the desired changes. or you can do it in real time with a midi controller. you will have to set up the controller assignments but that is really easy to do by using automation quick access. read page 825 in the manual. basically all you do after you turn on learn mode is click on the parameter to want to control, then move the slider or knob on your midi controller you want to use and your done. you can get more involved in setting up your controllers in control surface preferences>controller assignments
    hope this helps

  • How do I select a midi input device and record midi?

I have several midi input devices connected to my computer. I use them regularly with Digital Performer. I am trying to record a single midi track in Garage Band using an Oxygen 8 keyboard. In the preferences GB says that it sees 7 midi devices. How do I route midi with Garage Band and how do I tell Garage band which midi device to record from? When I create a midi track (well...I think that it is a midi track) and I try to record I do not see any midi notes being recorded.
Searching the help file for midi provided surprisingly little information. I am sure that this is simple stuff...perhaps so simple that I am missing something obvious.

Yes, if the controller sends the right MIDI messages
What do you mean by "the right midi messages"?
I have a virtual instrument (with for example) a delay effect knob. I would like to turn a knob on my midi controller and adjust the delay in the virtual instrument (as I can in just about any other sequencer). Can GarageBand do this, if so, how?
