Recording movie back to DV tape is Camcorder, no video?

I'm attempting to record my movie onto a DV tape back in my camcorder. It's a Panasonic PV-GS500, so that shouldn't be the problem. The camera is responding and the movie is being recorded, but the video isn't showing up, just the audio and a black screen. Any thoughts?

Guessing - camcorder set on Playback? Does another used tape play properly? You could export your movie to a QuickTime movie and then export that back to tape. That also gets around some rendering problems that can cause your video and KB stills to change the video format between 16:9 and 4:3 during export to tape.

  • How to use camcorder to record direct to laptop (bypassing tape)

I tried to record a movie directly from my Sony handycam DCR-HC28 onto my laptop. It did record the movie, but seemed to cycle through various alterations of the image. For example, for a few minutes the image would appear in negative, then little boxes would cover the image, although the audio was unchanged. I would like to record without tape directly to my laptop. I used a firewire and there was no tape in the camcorder last time. There is nothing about how to do this in the camcorder manual. Any suggestions? Thanks!
    J.B.

Some camcorders automatically enter demo mode if they're set to Playback (VCR mode) but with no tape in the camcorder.
Try setting it to Record mode, instead, with no tape in the camera.

  • Importing into iMovie from camcorder movies backed up on DVD

Each time that flashmemory of my camcorder is full I make a backup of the content on a DVD by copying all the files on a DVD (or two for 8GB flash). I have some camcorder backup files which are not on my iMovie library and I would like to transfer them to iMove, but there is no way that I can do this. The import does not recognize the CD/DVD drive. I have not tried copying the DVD back onto the flash and import it as if it is from the camera yet, because there are quite a few DVDs and copying each movie back onto the flash and then transfer it to the iMovie takes quite a lot of time. Is there anyother way? Thanks

Hmmm.... Depending on how you made the DVDs it might be possible.
First, open DISK UTILITY, from your Applications/Utilities folder.
Create a new disk image. Set a custom size that is at least as big as your flash card, say 8GB.
Set the properties of the Disk Image to be readable and writable. Give it a name.
You should now have an 8GB disk image. Mount it on your desktop by double clicking it. You should be able to see a blank folder in the Finder.
Now copy the contents of your DVD to the disk image. You will need ALL folders from your camera. Try to make the disk image look identical to the SD card. If you only have the .mts files, this will be more difficult. Let me know. If you have all the files from your camera, this is a simple copy operation.
Now, with the Disk Image mounted, open iMovie, and it should recognize it as a camera and you can import.

  • Record movie from Canon camcorder in high definition?

I would like for Quicktime Pro (7.6.2) to record high definition (HDV) video directly from my Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder via firewire. I noticed that QT will record regular DV when I switch the camcorder to the regular DV mode, and it recognizes the presence of the camcorder when the camcorder is set into HDV mode, but I won't record video (it gives the error msg "Recording failed because no data was received"). iMovie '08 will record video from the camera in either DV or HDV modes. Does anyone know a way to get QT to record high definition video from this camcorder? Is there a plug-in that might work? I have already installed Perian.
[My ultimate goal is to enable a third party program called LabChart to record HDV video, which uses Quicktime to capture video, while also recording data from the USB bus. This is why I can't just import HDV with iMovie, since it can't sync the video to signals coming in via USB}.

With HD being the new standard, do you imagine that they might make QT able to acquire HD soon? Seems that since it plays HD, it should be able to acquire HD too. thanks for your help!

  • Backing up to tape- not successful

I am running iMovie 6.0.4 and have a movie that I want to back up to tape on my camcorder (Canon HV20) I am running 10.4.11 on a Macbook Pro. I was able to import video from the camcorder to the computer with a firewire cable just fine, but when I try to reverse the process it gives the message "Cannot export to camera. Your firewire camer is not powered on or is not available. This can happen if you have added or removed a device from FireWire. Please try again." I have the camera in play mode and use the share menu/video camera. I have plugged the firewire into the camera in the only place I can find, which is that same place as the output to the computer. I have restarted many times and have the camera plugged in to ac power. Is there a compatibility issue?

Be sure to connect the camcorder directly to your computer. Don't chain it to any other devices.
I think Canons have more problems with this, but I have run into the problem a few times with my Sonys, including recently when I was exporting and just changed the DV tape in the camcorder. Suddenly I got those messages about the camcorder not being connected, check that, camera is off, etc. I just kept closing iMovie, turning the camcorder off and on, and finally restarted my Mac. That seemed to do it and everything then worked.
If you cannot get the Canon to work, can you borrow another digital camcorder and try with that?

  • What format camcorder for video editing. Making movies?

My 14 yr old son is into making movies. He needs a better camcorder. He makes stop motion movies as well as scripted movies with props. He edits them on his computer and some are really good, especially after he ads special effects to them.
I want to get him a better camera for filiming. Preferrably not over $600 or so. What is the best format video camera for editing on the computer and one that is good for shooting movies. It should have a spot light on it I assume for low light contitions, even though he sets up lights sometimes when he shoots.
Any suggestions as what I should get him? Thanks in advanced.

The HF200, along with all other decent high definition camcorders that use flash memory, DVDs, or hard drives, uses AVCHD.  And yes, AVCHD is difficult to work with for two reasons:
    1)  Many software packages didn't/don't support it, but this has changed dramatically in the past year.  Apparently Windows Live Movie Maker in Windows 7 supports it.  (Not in Windows Vista or earlier.)
    2)  It requires a lot of CPU power compared to what systems are currently capable of to work with, just like standard definition video did back in 1998-2000.  This will also get easier over time.
Both of the above are the price you pay for being on the cutting edge in terms of video quality.
Tape-based HD camcorders use HDV, which is MPEG-2 based.  This is somewhat easier to work with, but I would not reccommend a tape-based camcorder (motor noise, ruggedness, cost of media, etc.)
*disclaimer* I am not now, nor have I ever been, an employee of Best Buy, Geek Squad, nor of any of their affiliate, parent, or subsidiary companies.

  • Tape based camcorder is giving me an error. Import was aborted due to dropped frames

Importing into imovie. Tape based camcorder is giving me an error. "import was aborted due to dropped frames" There are spots on the tape that have no image. the tape must have been fast forwarded so some soptes are blank. I just want to capture the video and burn to a dvd disc. Importing into iMovie.
I just wast to record into imovie and burn the home movie to dvd disc. i have done this with other tapes. What do i do? Please help.

the built-in webcam doesn't deliver standard video with a 'clocked' time-base, such as 25 or 30fps.
I assume, when the frame-rate starts to flow too much, FCPX interprets this as a drop-out.
I would suggest to use the Quicktime Player X app to record first, and use a converter tool such as Mpeg Streamclip to 'convert' it into a regular, with a fix timecode, stream.
    Plan B)
from my box of silly advices:
give this a try: rise the surrounding brightness - lower frame-rates are used by webcams to compensate low-light conditions.
in general: I would never suggest to use FPCX as a 'recording' tool .......

  • In Lion, sometimes clicking on close button or tabs doesn't respond as if the buttons aren't there, i have to move the cursor away and move back to make them work again, anyone can help me?

I'm not sure if anyone had run into this issue. Clicking the same place on the display sevral times will cause the click to stop working. For example, if i open safari and click on the Show Reading List button, it will work the first time i click it, but stop responding to my command as i click more, as if the button is not there, i have to move away the cursor and click somewhere else and move back to click the button to make it work again. And it happened everywhere, not just the show reading list button. The scrolling and moving are normal.
In fact, I have my trackpad replaced in an apple store for this issue but it turned out this is not a hardware problem, and it is not only my problem. Ironically, i found the same issue on several of the demo Macs inside the apple store. So anyone can help me here? Thanks.

Hi manni394, what version of Firefox are you running now?
Firefox 22 has a new way of setting the default zoom level: it is based on your Windows font size setting. So, if you set Windows fonts to 125% (enlarged 25%), your Firefox pages also will be enlarged 25%. On pages that do not adjust their layout, you may get a horizontal scroll bar.
To reduce the zoom on a page, hold Ctrl and tap the - key (the one on the numeric keypad or the one on the number row of the keyboard). The zoom should be reduced for each tap.
If you want to globally adjust your zoom level to be lower, you can use either of these add-ons:
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-fullzoom-level/ Default FullZoom Level]
    * [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/nosquint/ NoSquint]
If you already have one of those add-ons, check the default/global zoom level in case it needs to be adjusted.

  • In an HDV sequence can I "scrub" the timeline and record it via FW to tape?

In an HDV sequence can I "scrub" the timeline and record it via FW to tape?
In standard definition I used to be able to do this via Firewire to my mini-dv deck. But now I am working with the Canon Vixia30, an HDV camera. I'd like to be able to scrub the time line back and forth at varying speeds and record this scrubbing live (rather than doing it with Motion software.) Is there anyway to "record" this action, either onto tape or digitally, while maintaining the HD resolution?
If possible I'd like to figure out how to do this without buying extra equipment. I understand I could get a Matrox MO2 Mini box ($450.) to output the live HD signal, but then how to record the HD signal from the Matrox box? (my camera only has HDMI out, not in.)
    Thank you for your input.

And if you capture your footage as ProRes (as I see discussed in another thread), you cannot output to HDV via firewire. It would be pointless. To go from a lossy format to ProRes to edit...then convert back to HDV. Typically people who shoot HDv never master back to HDV, as it isn't a mastering format.
And yes, the MAX is totally worth it. Compression times faster than RT (meaning less time to compress than the timeline is long...I did 90 min timeline in 75 min yesterday). Worth it? Depends how much your time is worth. TO me, I'd like to have the compression done in 75 minutes opposed to 3-4 hours.

  • I had all my old home video's and super 8 movies converted to DVD's. Since I will move back to Europe I asked the company to convert them to PAl system.

I had all my old home video's and super 8 movies converted to DVD's. Since I will move back to Europe I asked the company to convert them to PAl system. I just got all the DVD's for a lot of money, but I can not play any of them on my MAC book.(I think that is because they were burned on zone 1 dvd's and my lap top works with zone 2.
I wonder how I can make them work on my macbook..? I intended to start editing those movies so I need to be able to play them on my mac. Is there a way to copy them to zone 2 DVD's and or to zone 0 dvd's and where do I get those free zone or zone 1 recordable dvd's?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The Apple TV 2 will play all the content in your iTunes library that your Apple TV 1 does. It can no longer sync any of it but can stream it all just as the older model did. Airplay is a different feature that lets you stream from an iPad/iPhone, the Apple TV 2 has Airplay the first didn't.
You can still sort and search content by genre, it still marks content watched and unwatched and mainly still lets you organise much as the Apple TV 1 did, with one exception. It doesn't do nested folders, so the ability to tag a movie as a show (ie James Bond) and have all the associated movies in a James bond folder has gone and it lists all these movies individually.
It has a similar situation with TV shows. It will put all TV shows in a series in a folder as the older one did, but the new one lists each series separately whereas the older model would put all the series in one folder.
Not nesting folders is a bit of a pain with large libraries and whilst I don't like it, it's more or less the only compromise I have to make and of course I get additional features too.

  • How to transfer edited FCP project back to miniDV tape

Hi to all. I'm trying this for the 1st time, and it didn't work. I have a feeling I'm missin some connection between my Sony GV-D1000 miniDV deck and the G5 computer.
I'm trying to get back to tape my edited version (non-compressed).
From FCP I went to File - Print to Video. The software recognized the deck and it seemed to be recording, but when rewound the tape and played it back, nothing was there.
Any assistance of course is highly valued and appreciated. Currently, I'm connected to the computer via a firewire cable (to the back of the deck with a DV connection.

Make sure you can SEE it on the Deck first.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • HT1529 I accidentally reset my iPad, how do I get my movies back?

I purchased a Mac pro today and when I went to sync my iPad I rest my iPad accidentally and now don't know how to get my movies back?

If ... you live in the U.S. - you can download some movies again fro free if you use the same Apple ID.
Go to the purchased tab of the iTunes app on the iPad. Tap the View button in the upper left corner. If "Movies" appears in the resulting window - tap that. You should now see all of your purchased movies. Tap the movie and then tap the cloud icon to download it again.

    Help, please.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
