Recording Music With Rock Band Drum Set

I can't seem to get a Rock Band Drum set to record with Garage Band.
When I first plug it in USB the X lights up for a second, and then quickly fades out.
I have heard recording with the Drum set can work, but not for me.
Thanks

he/she is not referring to midi support. Its probably not an equitable trade off to purchase a 600 dollar (piece of junk at that price) midi drum kit for a program as crummy as garage band.
They mean to use the controller as a keyboard keypad. There are drivers to use USB xbox controllers with osx. I too am having problems with them recognizing garage band.
My xbox 360 driver pane also freezes when selected. Possible that is the root of the problem. First program I've used on osx that kills the OS when selected. The controller is "on" and available in the pref pane. But does not actually "start'

  • Rock Band Drum Kit in Garageband

    Hi Everyone,
Yesterday as I was playing Rock Band, I was struck with the idea of trying to get the drum kit to register as a MIDI/electronic drum kit on my Mac. I looked all over on the support forums but didn't find a definitive answer on this. A quick google search produced this YouTube video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmXLBfrmJxM&e
Basically, after installing two drivers I was able to plug my Xbox 360 drum kit into my MacBook, and assign the drum pads to certain keys that you then use in the "musical typing" function of Garageband.
It works perfectly (although I can hear a bit of a delay, time for a RAM upgrade), and the Rock Band drum kit is sold as a standalone piece for only $80.

None of us are GarageBand experts here - try https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/garageband - that's where the pro's hang out.

  • Is there some sort of adapter that i can use to plug my electric guitar into, so that i can record music into garage band?

Probably but for that kind of expertise I would ask the experts in the GarageBand forum.

  • Recording Music With Audigy Platinu

I record music with my Audigy and I am trying to get it so I can record my guitar with effects. I can turn the effects on, but it turns it on for everything and when I record, no effects are applied.
I tried messing with the "source" for the effect with no success. I also tried switching my windows sound settings for record and playback...

    Voormis,
I think a EMU recording card is in your future. The entry level EMU card is the 0404 and can do exactly what you are looking to do. The higher end cards offer more inputs and better grade converters. Basically if you are looking for something for multitrack recording with effects processing, you should check these cards out.
Right now EMU is selling Factory Re-Certified B-Stock cards at good discounts. You can also check for the cards through many music retailers. Here is the emu website:

  • Recording music with MacBook Pro

    Hello,
Im upgrading but I am unsure whether MacBook Pro will suit my needs.
I want to be able to record up to 16 channels via a firewire audio interface simultaneously into Logic Pro.
I currently use an old iBook G4 with a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 audio interface but the iBook struggles to record up to 8 channels simultaneously. Im guessing this is because of processing power?
Does anybody know whether MacBook Pro will be suitable?
Does anybody use there MacBook Pro for recording music?
    Cheers,
    Liam

I have used my 15" Pro for recording music into soundtrack for some minor stuff but it records just beautifully. I would make sure that you get a Pro that is clocked in at a high processing speed. I would liked to have gotten the 17" since that model also has the extra graphics card (not that you need it for sound). Also make sure that the model you do choose has the right about of pins for the firewire. I believe they have changed since the Macbook models.

  • Recording music with onscreen keyboard (Like in garage band)

    Help!
I just went through the whole tutorial using the tutorial.iso and read through the manual in LE7. now when I start a new project. I can not get any audio from the on screen keyboard (caplocks key). I just want to compose simple music scores like how you can when recording in garage band using its on screen key board and when you record in GB you can actually see the notes painted on screen when you select the music instrument -ex: "reflective strings". Also when I go into the matrix window and I just want to "draw" notes onto the grid or press the keys in this screen, it won't even let me do that. Can someone tell me how I can get this to work and how I can get it to record on screen? Is anybody else having this problem? I Just want to do the most simple task as that. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Yes, but see the thing is, I am not getting any audio "at all" when trying to record any kind of software instument. I can hear sound in the tutorial, but not when I start a "new" project from scratch. Is there something I am doing wrong? I can see the meter registering the sound and some times notse will be writing on the screen in the audio object, but not sound emits. Can you tell me if it is the audio object I am on? Even when selecting the default instrument such as the violin or the piano, I still can not hear anything at all when using the on screen keyboard (caplocks key). If you or anyone can help that would be great.

  • Mixing a live recording of a rock band

    Hi everyone,
I recently just did my first mix of a live show and the mix sounds pretty good and the band is happy with it...... But looking back in hind site I'm wondering if I approached the mix correctly.
Here's the deal.... I have all the raw multi tracks of the band and also a stereo room track. The room mics were placed on the ceiling close to the stage and the venue is quite intimate and small (The Bitter End in NYC).... The Room track alone already sounds pretty good.
When I did the mix, I began with all the raw tracks and added the room mix at the end.
Today, just for fun..... I decided to re-mix it, this time starting with the stereo room track at unity, and then adding all the raw tracks one by one to match the room.
The difference in the two mixes is pretty drastic..... Not that one is better than the other, they just sound different, the first approach sounds more produced (but still has a "live" feel) while the second approach sounds much more "live".
Like I said, this was my first attempt at mixing a live show (for CD distribution), and I'm wondering which approach should be the "proper" way to do this. (If there is one)
All your thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated, especially from those of you who have experience in mixing live shows.
    Thanks
    -A

Nope, there's no such thing as "proper". You described two totally different feels for the mix. So one can't possibly be more "proper" than another except, perhaps, in the eyes of the client.
Suggest playing both for the client and see what they have to say. Then you'll know what "proper" is.
Or, be daring. Make a statement that reflects the vibe of the music you recorded, whatever you think that should be, and send that to the client. Get feedback and take it from there.

  • Recording music with T420

    Hi all,
I newly received a Lenovo T420. I would like to record some music.. How to record a guitar or a bass with a Lenovo T420? Where should I plug the audio input and with which kind of jack? I have tried using a normal jack to combo audio mini jack cable, plugged in the combo mini jack input of the computer, but there is no answer.
    Thanks!
    P

Well that is the jack and you'll have to get a spiltter adapter likely which takes the 4 pin 3.5mm and creates a separate Mic, & Speaker jack. I don't know why they did this and don't tell me this is a new standard. Thats a crock its a pain for generic audio connections and the space is always there. They have them on cell phones but its not as big an issue there on computers, discrete ports are needed. Fire that engineer and send him back to the back country working the rice fields.

  • Why doesn't Apple supply a simple audio recording app with the iPad? (Garage Band is not simple app)

I am going to be teaching an integrated media production course in the spring semester (creating an online college newspaper) and I want the students to use mini iPads to create images, videos and sound clips.   Images and video, no problem.   Easy to move to our iMacs in the lab for editing and inclusion in a college newspaper web site.   On the other hand, audio is a mess.   Sure, I can have them shoot video, import the video into Final Cut on the iMacs and then use Final Cut like an audio editor, but that is pretty lame.   They could download Garage Band but that would require all the students to have iTunes accounts, which is a real pain.   And moving audio recording made with Garage Band to the iMac is a real drag and way too much work.   Why the **** can't Apple include a simple audio memo program in the basic iPad app setup?   This is really old school stuff that was on computers way back when.   Using Garage Band for that simple function is like swatting flies with a sledge hammer.

  • Using a Shotgun Mic with Garage Band

I have Garage Band 09 on my MacBook Pro. I have a USB microphone that works great when I plug in into the laptop to record dialogue, etc.
What I'm trying to do now is use a Rode Video Mic plugged into the laptop and record dialogue with Garage Band. I have the Griffin iMic USB adapter that accepts the 3.5 plug from the Rode mic and then plugs into the USB port of the laptop. After making sure in my preferences that the iMic is chosen, I can only get a whisper of sound recording into Garage Band. I've tried the different settings on the Rode mic and looked through everything I can think of in the Garage Band preferences and can't get it to record strong, clear sound. I'm aware that a pre-amp mixer probably would do the trick, but I'm trying to find an economical version for now.
Does anyone have any advice on why I can only get a super quiet recording with this Rode shotgun mic?

    Hey Hang Time,
Yes, there's the Mic or Line switch on the iMic and it has to be set on the Mic setting when using the external microphone.
I've been playing with the set up again and it's possible I may have found the problem. I was looking at the Recording Level in the control section of Garage Band and adjusted the recording level up. Now I'm getting a good strong recording. I feel foolish to think it may have been something so simple and relating to "operator error."
If anyone has any other suggestions or thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

  • The "WHINE"--recording music & Logic

    Hey everyone,
I just found this website and the guy claims he was able to record the whine using Logic Pro WITHOUT even using a microphone.
    http://web.mac.com/paulthespecialist/iWeb/Paul%20Turner/MacBook%20Pro%20Whine%20 Sound.html
This is very troubling for me. I have a MBP with the whine and will be recording music with Logic. The thing is, I have learned to “accept” the whine and use various work-arounds (mainly the mirror-widgit and QuietMBP sometimes) to make the whine go away.
My QUESTION is this: If I record music using Logic AFTER I have stopped the whine using the mirror widget, for example, could the whine STILL be picked up when recording? (Say, somehow internally, or some other way?) This is very important because I bought my MBP solely for recording purposes and I’m getting ready to invest over $5000 on other music equipment to work in conjunction with my MBP. Please, anyone with any knowledge or experience with this, please respond! Thank you.

It works very well for me, and appears to have had no ill effect on my computer. It's the best solution and is used by many on this forum. So the decision's yours. Until Apple decides to build this fix into OSX this is how we do it...:) It completely distracted me until I found the answer on here. Hope it works for you, should you decide to try it.

  • Beginner! Need help getting started with recording music.

I am the definition of 'new' at the moment. I want to record my own music at home and I've been told that using an Apple Mac is one of the better ways to go about it at home.
I have a number of questions, most of which have probably been asked before (apologies!) starting right from the beginning.
    1. What type of Mac would be best suited as a dedicated tool for recording music? Obviously speed and memory are big factors, but are there any other considerations here (available inputs, drivers, sound cards etc)? I'm hoping to keep the cost below AUS$3000 if possible.
    2. Do i need any other hardware for this application? (this is where you can tell how inexperienced I am haha) such as mixers etc? If I should need a mixer, is there a particular type or brand of mixer that works well with Macs?
    3. Will plugging a guitar amp into the mac improve sound quality over plugging the guitar directly into the Mac? I bought a Griggin Garage Band guitar cable a while ago to record some background music for a friend's DVD, and I found it worked well, but I'm looking for the best quality sound now.
    4. What would be the most effective software to use? I've briefly used Garage Band and found that to be simple and useful, but I've heard that there are better software packages available.
I'm hoping to be able to record guitar, bass and vocals directly on to the Mac, and create drum tracks using samples and loops. I know how to play music but as you can tell I know very little about recording it! Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
    Thanks..

I would presume one line level input will suffice?
Close, you need a Line Level AND Mic Level input since you'll want to record vocals.
Thanks for the link to your Q&A page, I found some very useful info there.
It's showing its age, and will hopeful get updated soon, but most of the info is good at least for a background.
Anyway, I think I might recommend this Presonus INSPIRE over the FireBox, it'll save you about $100 and since PreSonus makes excellent equipment (and we have an active member here that uses the Inspire), I'm confident that it offers great quality.
I think the firepod that you use looks great, but might be overkill
I agree, the FirePod would be serious overkill for your needs. Again, an awesome interface, but you'd be paying for all those Mic PREs, and using 1. That wouldn't make sense, and since the FP isn't cheap...
my talent and engineering knowledge is quite limited
Then I would strongly suggest GB as the software, and then do lots of reading. The weakest link in music production is your engineering skills. Mixing and Mastering (especially the latter) are art forms. A bad engineer using a $10,000 bit of software and hardware would make a fantastic performance sound like garbage. With good engineering skills you can make a pro recording with GB.
The learning curve with something like Logic is dramatically increased, and again, without the skills to take advantage of what it offers, your recordings are not going to sound any better. At the very least, start with GB to learn the skills of Recording/Editing/Mixing/Mastering. The "price of admission" is low enough that if in a year you find that you need a feature GB doesn't offer, your money will not have been wasted, it will have been valuable learning time.
Hope those more specific answers help

  • Recording a bands live set has distorted audio

Previously I have recorded many bands live set (small hardcore bands, all legal, don't worry) using the Camera app on my iPhone 4, 4S, and 5. Always got very high quality recordings thanks to the automatic gain control (I think?). Now with the iPhone 5S and iOS7 I get very distorted audio. Not sure if it's the software or hardware change. Sadly I do not have my old iDevices to test them again, but a lot of my old videos are on youtube. Any thoughts or solutions?

    1. What is the maximum number of tracks that can be recorded at one time in Garageband?
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/GBFAQ.html#maxnumrecordabletracks
(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
I read somewhere that Garageband can only record 8 live tracks{...} Is this true?
yes, however that 8 tracks is 16 channels, explained briefly here:
    http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/TricksHacks.html
    and 1 MIDI track simultaneously.
    correct, there is no workaround
    2. Optimally I would like to have 10-12 real recordings
doable if the interface supports it, and you're up for the extra work in post
    and 2 MIDI
    not doable with GB.
    3. I plan to record to a 1 TB external USB drive so that I don't run out of disk space. Would GB play nice with recording to an external drive over USB?
to record that many tracks, you want FireWire, not USB.
    4. If no, should I record each song, save it, then copy it over to the external? or record the entire set in one recording?
trusting an entire performance to a single recording is not a good idea no matter what you use. saving each song would be wise no matter what.
