Recording Narration for Keynote?

According to the KN User Manual, each KN slide can be narrated with an audio file so that the audio plays for that one slide only and stops when that slide leaves the screen. But the user manual does not say how to record this narration. Is there a way to record narration, one slide at a time, using a UBS mic, directly into Keynote as I'm building the presentation?
Right now.... my procedure is to export the KN, no audio, presentation as a QT movie: DV NTSC Low Quality compression, at 8fps. (Any other frame rate and the QT movie is not the same length as the Keynote Presentation. I made a one minute test of this and only changed the frame rate settings. 8fps gave me a 1:00 QT movie, but 29.97fps gave me :58. Over time, this two second loss can really add up!)
I then imported that low video quality QT into Final Cut and used the voice over tool and a USB mic to record narration as each slide rolled by. I then exported just the audio track, since the video was just there as a low quality guide, and I then put that audio track in iTunes.
I then went back to the original high quality Keynote presentation and dropped the narration track into the first slide with the media option. For at least the one minute test, everything was in sync through ten different slides.
Is there an easier way for me to get narration into a Keynote presentation?
Thanks, Steve

Thanks Richard,
I did what you suggested, but instead of using QT pro, I used SoundStudio, which will also allow me to record through a USB mic. I then added an audio file to each individual slide. I did this for a ten slide test, but for my wife's 100 slide presentation I can see how that would take up a lot of time!
Still, your system of audio files (builds) added to each slide worked fine although I'm still testing out the refinements. It seems that once the audio is on the slide, the preference is towards the audio. By that I mean if you have a 12 second slide and you add 14 seconds of audio then the slide will stay on for at least 14 seconds before it makes a transition. Even though you may have set the slide to transition after 12 seconds. The audio won't get cut off. The other thing I see is that after the audio stops playing, there's too much of a delay before the transition kicks in.
I'll have to look into that.
The other route I took was making a Keynote presentation, exporting it as a low quality QT self playing movie, importing that movie into Final Cut Express, adding voiceover to the total running time of the presentation, and then exporting just the audio track as an aiff auido file. I then took that aiff audio file, went back to the high quality Keynote and dropped that track into the audio well to sync up with the first slide. All worked well with everything in sync, in Keynote. I then exported both audio and video as a QT movie and the audio fell out of sync. After 60 seconds the audio ended up 2 seconds longer than the video. Over time this could kill the project.
So..... if I have to do a lot of narration on slides I might buy QT Pro and drop the audio in as build objects for each slide. Hopefully I can work the other timing bugs out.
Any idea what went wrong with the sync when I exported a QT movie out of Keynote?

  • Can Keynote 3 record narration for slides (like PowerPoint)?

Does anyone know if it's possible to record narration for selected slides in Keynote 3? Unfortunately, this much-desired feature was lacking in Keynote 2 (it could only play one audio file through the entire presentation). FYI, PowerPoint has this feature already, but it is then limited by an inability to export to Flash or QuickTime... Thanks!

Thanks, nanotechmama! On your lead, I looked up the User's Guide and found this additional clarification:
    "Adding Narration and Other Audio
You can add music—a file or playlist from your iTunes music library, or any other sound file—to a Keynote document. You can add sound as a soundtrack for the entire slideshow, or you can add sound to a single slide.
If you add a soundtrack, the music starts playing when the slideshow starts. You can specify whether to play the audio once or repeatedly (or you can turn it off ).
If you add a sound file to an individual slide, the sound plays when the slide appears and stops when you move to the next slide. You could, for example, record narration for each slide as an MP3 file; this technique is especially useful if you plan to export the slideshow as a self-playing QuickTime movie. (For more information, see “PowerPoint” on page 167.)
Note: To make sure that the audio plays on other computers, “Copy audio and movies into document” must be selected in the expanded Save dialog. This option is on by default."
So it looks like it might be possible to add a different narration file to each slide. I've therefore ordered a copy of Keynote 3, and I'll confirm in a week or so (once I receive it) whether this is indeed so.

  • Can I record a voiceover narration for keynote ios

I want to record a voiceover narration for keynote ios or transfer my existing presentation with voice from keynote 09?  Is there a easy way to do this?
    Thanks

I just saw correct answer, so I clicked on it for hang time's answer.  I don't know anything about Internet forums, or anything technical, so, I'm sorry about the points!   Thanks again, hangtime, you really made my summer!!!

  • Best Way to Record Narration for Slides

    I'm new to Keynote.
    1. I have created a 20 slide presentation.
    2. I have recorded a 5-minute narration for the presentation in Garage Band.
What is my best option to put the two elements (slide show and audio) together so they sync perfectly? I'd like the end result to be a flash file that I can upload to YouTube and embed on my website.
Here are a couple possible work flows I thought may work. Am I on the right path? What would you suggest?
    A. Cut my audio into 20 files and add those files to the individual Keynote pages. Then somehow turn the Keynote with the 20 audio files into a flash file.
    B. Wait until Camtasia for Mac comes out next week. Then, add my audio track, import the Keynote slides (if possible), and tweak the timing in Camtasia so that the slide show and narration match up.
What do you think? Would either of these work? Am I forgetting some other obvious solution that would be easier? Thanks.

I have no experience with Flash or Camtasia, but I have used iMovie to create QuickTime slideshows that are suitable for most websites. This may be another option for you.
It's easy in iMovie to match up narration or music, or both, with individual slides, apply various effects and transitions, and export the results in formats for DVDs or websites. I have not tried importing an entire Keynote presentation into iMovie and do not know if that's possible. Keynote offers title and transition features that iMovie lacks; so the choices you make really depend on your end goals, which will determine which tools are best to get there.

  • Best way to record narration for 200+ slideshow?

    Hi All,
I've got a long narrative to record to a complex slideshow of over 200 slides with transitions.
    What are your suggestions?
If it's done in Screenflow- is there a loss of resolution/ quality? Another alternative I thought of was recording the narrative for each slide in Audacity and then attaching it to each slide.
I want to export the whole to Quicktime/ Flash when done.
    System: Macbook 2.16GHz running 10.5.3 and iWork08.
    Cheers

<<I guess I could time the narration for each bullet point (build) on the slide, and then manually set the build time accordingly.>>
That's about it. Setting an appropriate Delay for automatic Builds is what I had in mind. However, it is important to remember that this often will "slip" slightly during playback - especially if the presentation is designed on one computer and played on another because the playback speed (duration) of all Builds and Transitions is dependent on the processor speed of the playback computer.
It is not a perfect solution, but until Apple fixes all of the various audio deficiencies in Keynote, we will have to live with the various work-arounds that are proposed in this forum.
    Good luck.

  • Recording narration with keynote

I've got a big keynote presentation of about 90 slides with plenty of compositions and transitions, and all my narration is written down in comments. I've already given that presentation but now I would like to publish it so that people who couldn't attend can catch-up. The first thing I'd like to do is a video of my slides with my narration on top of it.
I thought it would be simple but I can't find a simple way to do it.
So how can I actually record both video and audio output when playing this keynote and produce a video out of it? Of course exporting in flash or quicktime doesn't work because I can't control when slides are changing.

I highly suggest that you try out Profcast. I have been using it to record narration with my presentations and I am pleased with the results.

  • Recording narrations in keynote does not erase old narration

When I use keynote to record a presentation for distribution as a video, any changes DO NOT wipe out the old narration but double up.  I have looked everywhere for this, and it is supposed to automatically get rid of the old recordings and use the new recording moving forward.
I think the software is not programmed correctly as it didn't work in old OS and it is not working in Mavericks.
    Any help or similar frustration?
    Thanks,

  • When using the record function for narration in Keynote 09 version 5.1.1., the recording continually gets off sync with the slides even if nothing has been altered on any of the slides.

I am trying to record narration for my slideshow in Keynote 09 version 5.1.1. I put the transitions on automatic and hit the record button, then read the slides as they advanced. The program allows me to record my voice, however, when I play the slideshow back the recording continually becomes more off sync with the slides with each play. Is there a way to fix this?

     Hi,
One of my ex-colleagues has installed a NI-DAQ 6.5 in our system. [And I do not see any other naitional instruments card in the CPU of the computer, may be he removed it] I deleted the account and all his files in the system. When I am trying to install version8.0, its not getting installed and giving me a message that I should uninstall the previous version by going to Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
I tried doing that, but the "Change/Remove" button does not seem to work...[There is no response and so unable to install the new version...]
Any idea how can this problem be solved?
It is a windowsXP operating system with SP2 installed on a machine with P4 processor.
    Thanks

  • Any hope for KeyNote's QuickTime export to get stable?

I recently recorded narration into KeyNote while giving a seminar (47 mintues long).  Plays back everything fine, but if exporting to QuickTIme it becomes a mess (horrible audio/video sync - up to 3 minutes off at the end, missing last slide entirely).  I have several imported MP4 clips and this seems to be the main cause of the problems, but transitions and move builds also seem problematic.  If I remove all my clips, export the talk to QuickTIme, then things are pretty close and I can add the clips via QuickTIme Pro 7.
My problem: Searching discussions I find these types of issues going back for years, yet there is no acknowledgement that there are limitations on KeyNote's export function.  Are there things that are just not supported, or are these things just bugs that may never get fixed?

  • Keynote recording narrations question

I need to record a timed narration in Keynote, I know the correct way to do using record slideshow. Problem is the narration is very long and there will no doubt be mistakes in the narration if I didi it live that I would have to go back, edit etc. Is there a way for me to record the narration outside or inside of Keynote, editv export( if I could do inside Kn) and save the final copy, import back into Keynote, record the slideshow while hearing the audio back live and THEN forward the to the next slide as needed?
    any help?

I know that GB does this but that is not the question, which is :
Can I import a narrated audio track INTO Keynote, then use Record Slideshow?
Will Keynote let me do this or can I only do it WHILE I'm recording a narration live, follow?

  • Rerecording Narration for a Single Slide

I've recorded the narration for a long slideshow (without Keynote) and I need to rerecord the narration for a single slide. When I read the help files, they read as though I will wipe out everything after the slide I record. Please tell me that's not true and that there is a way I can record new narration for a single slide. Thanks.

The term "narration" has a very specific meaning in Keynote: it refers to a spoken (usually) track that accompanies an entire slideshow, running through all of the slide changes.
If you want to record a "voice-over" (VO) track for a single slide all you need to do is record this off-line (for example in Garage Band or any other audio production application) and then import this as an audio file into the individual slide. Use the Inspector > Build-in > start audio to initiate playback within the slide.
Caveats: 1) This will play only while the specific slide is on the screen. IF you change the slide, the VO track will stop. 2) It will play simultaneously with any Soundtrack or Narration tracks you have assigned to the overall slideshow, and you have no way to control the relative balance between them. So, if you do have either (or both) a Soundtrack and Narration for your program, you will need to record these such that they leave room (either by fading out/in or reducing level) for this specific VO track.
    Good luck.

  • How can I record narration with no video or beyond the end of my video in iMovie?

I have a question about recording narration in iMovie.
I wrote a script to read as the narration for a movie I'm making. My thought was I could record the narration first, then add video to match the spoken words.
I've done this before in Sony Vegas on my PC and it worked out well, better than trying to speak to what was going on in the video after I record the video.
Unfortunately, if I try to record narration in iMovie without any video being there yet, it won't record. It appears I need to put a video clip on the timeline first.
If I put a short clip in and try to record narration beyond the end of it, iMovie quits recording at the end of the video clip.
So I went to quicktime and recorded my narration there and have 10 audio files (since I just don't seem to be able to read this whole script without making mistakes).
I then tried to add all 10 to my movie and I think it made me add a video clip first, but after I did, iMovie overlayed all 10 audio files on top of each other.
If I try to drag them over one at a time, I still can't get them to go sequentially unless I add more video to my movie.
There must be a way to add audio files or create narration without having to create a video file longer than your audio first.  Isn't there?
I just can't seem to find a way to get the audio files layed out one after another without more video.  Very frustrating.
At this point, I really want to know how to add audio files beyond the end of my video since I have them all recorded.
But I'd also like to know how to record narration beyond the end of the video too for future projects.
    Thanks!
    Brad

You could insert a bunch of placeholders in the timeline before doing the voiceover.
You can find a range of placeholders (they are actually templates used in iMovie Trailers) in the Maps, Backgrounds & Animatics browser. This is the last browser at the end of the centre toolbar, after the Titles and Transitions browsers. Click on it and scroll down to see all the animatics (aka placholders or templates). Drag a number of these into your project timeline - as many as you think you need to cover your audio.
When you've finished the voiceover, drag photos directly onto the animatics and select Replace from the pop-up menu. Adjust the timing by using the Inspector (double-click a photo to open the Inspector, then change the duration).
