Recording onto external hard drives

I have been having trouble recording guitar with direct input. (I am probably getting the apogee one soon) The sound is in perfect time when I record it but when I play it back it is off time, and needs to be nudged to sound correct again. I have also been recording onto an external hard drive lately, will this effect the problem in any way? Do any of you record onto external drives or do you use the computers built in hard drive?

Sorry for the miss communication, the off timing occurs when I record onto my macbook pros internal hard drive (and that was with garageband but I am now using logic express). I don't know what the rotational speed is, but I have three external hard drives, is there a way to tell? Do you record onto an external drive or the built in drive?
Thanks, Jv-

  • How do I put pictures from iphoto onto external hard drive

I would like to transfer most of my pictures from iphoto to and external hard drive to free up space.  I was sold a WD elements and said its a plug and play then drag onto drive.  When I try to drap photos to the external drive it won't let me.  Anyone have any suggestions?

This is a brand new drive? Make sure it is formatted so you can read and write from a Mac. (Plug and Play could mean P&P on Windows.)
With the drive connected, run Disk Utility. It's in Applcations / Utilities. Select the drive (on the left) reformat it. This will erasse everything on the drive - but I assume it is empty since you could not write to it.

  • How to install Snow Leopard onto external hard drive.

I'm currently running on 10.5.8, and I just bought the Snow Leopard installation disc to update to 10.6.3.
My mac has been running on an external hard drive for about a year. The internal just stopped working.
I want to  install Snow Leopard onto my external hard drive, but all of my files are on there, and I read that if I do the install, all of the data will be erased.
If I used time machine to back up the files before I do the install, are they at risk of being erased, since they will be back-uped on the external?
This is probably super obvious, but I want to be very careful with this.
Any help is very much appreciated!
    ^__^

    1. The data won't be erased unless a problem occurs.
    2. The Time Machine backup should be on a different drive, as drives can fail.

  • Moving iPhoto library onto external hard drive

I would like to transfer all of my photos over to my external hard drive as my MacBook is filling up fast.
I followed the directions on moving the iPhoto library onto my external hard drive. I can see the iPhoto icon on the external drive. I no longer see it under Me/Pictures.
If I select the iPhoto icon on my external hard drive to open iPhoto, it opens without any photos. If I press "option" while opening iPhoto from the icon at the bottom of the screen the only option I have is from the following: Users/Me/Movies/iMovie Projects.localized/iPhoto Library. This option does open iPhoto so that I can see my photos. There is an option there to "Create New" so I added my hard drive. But if I use that as my default, I get no pictures.
A couple of questions. How do I complete this process? Where are my pictures now? I'm assuming they are on my external hard drive. I didn't delete them from my MacBook so I'm also assuming they are there but not visible.
    Thanks

As we're not sure what you have done exactly it's hard to be certain how to progress.
This is how you move an iPhoto Library
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
There is no way you've done that if you can no longer see the Library at Me/Pictures.

  • How to move all of itunes onto external hard drive?

Right now, I have my music library connected to iTunes on an external hard drive. iTunes is installed on my desktop computer. What I'd like to do is have iTunes wholly on my external hard drive so I could move it back and forth between a laptop and my desktop. I edit a lot of tracks and to make sure the edits carry over, I'd just like it all on the external hard drive instead of downloading iTunes onto both devices. Also I add and delete different playlists with regularity.
Plus my iTunes runs sluggish (freezes for several seconds every time I click on something) and after a google search, one reason might be because my massive music collection is on a different drive, so I'm curious if keeping it all on the external would help.
I've searched around on how to do this, but all I find is how to move my library onto the external (its already there). I'm using Windows 7.

See Make a split library portable.
The larger the library and the more playlists you have the longer it takes to process each change in the database.

  • How to backup files onto external hard drive if my MacBook's graphics card is broken?

    Hello,
I have a 15" 2012 Macbook pro with 2gb of ram, i7 processor, and a 250 gb Hard drive. In the middle of using my computer, the screen went black. Upon rebooting the computer, I noticed gray and white horizontal lines running across the screen, but I was still able to see the apple logo and loading indicator in the background. As soon as the login screen appeared, the screen went black again.
    Genius Bar Diagnosis:
A few days later I took my computer to the apple store to have them diagnose the computer to determine if the hard drive was corrupt or if it was just a display issue. They found that the hard drive was still functioning properly, so no information was lost. The problem was that the graphics card needed to be replaced. So they offered to ship my laptop to an Apple repair facility in Houston, Texas (nearest one to me) and replace the graphics card, as well as any other parts that seemed to be damaged, for a flat rate of about $315. They recommended that I back up my hard drive just in case they found an issue with it (despite nothing showing up in the diagnosis at the genius bar) because the technicians at the repair facility will just swap it out for a new one.
    My dilemma:
The employee at the genius bar gave me a list of Apple Authorized Service Providers that could help transfer the data from my macbook's hard drive to an external hard drive. I got a quote from them for $150, plus I would have to pay for a new external hard drive because my other one is full. In an effort to save money, I want to see if there is a cheaper way for me to backup the hard drive by myself. I have a pc laptop that still works fine, so I have been using that since my MacBook Pro died on me. Is there any way I could use that other computer to somehow backup my macbook's hard drive? Or would I need another mac to do the transfer? I have looked into buying a hard drive sled, but I don't know how those work, and I may not have all of the right equipment for it. If that is something I have the right tools for, and it's cheaper after buying all the accessories, then I would much rather go that route than taking it in to get serviced at an AASP store. Please help!
I'll give good ratings to those who give me useful advice.
    Thanks,
    Matt

Hello mafrerichs and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Simplest way is to use Target Disk mode:
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
and hook to another Mac and use CCC or SuperDuper and clone your HD to another drive.
You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

  • Backed library onto external hard drive, but after transfer, playlists, playcounts ect haven't saved?

On my old laptop I backed up my music on to an external hard drive ready to transfer over to my new laptop.
After copying the folder from my external to the new laptops' own drive, I duly followed instructions to restore the library.
I thought all was well and good but I noticed that it only copied the songs.. no song history or playlists. I added a new album to the library (an annoying experience after the new update in Feb) and noticed that when I went to sync my ipod (classic), all it did was charge my ipod.
So basically all my itunes is, is just a brand new library with my songs pasted in. Theres no history of song playcounts or playlists.
Needless to say im very irritated, as I have had no problems in the past and seem to have lost over EIGHT YEARS of history :/
The old laptop has been reformatted and wiped so I can't even go back and start again. Is there any way of moving my info from the ipod itself to the laptop?!! Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Ah sorted it. Basically I had renamed my iTunes folder in the hard drive, so when I transfered to My music there were two folders. I have since renamed and deleted the original iTunes folder and it works now. Thank you

  • Backing up Everything onto External Hard Drive

I've just bought a Western Digital My Book external hard drive to back up everything on my iMac. How do I go about doing this? Can I just drag and drop?

Time Machine may not provide a bootable backup, but it does provide a backup process that is automatic and up-to-date to within ONE HOUR of active use. A clone is only as good as the last time you bothered to run a backup, which is a time-consuming process that you initiate manually. Although you cannot boot off the Time Machine backup disk, you can boot off your Mac OS X installation disc (for Leopard or Snow Leopard) and run the utility to do a complete startup volume restore. Unlike a clone, which can only be restored to the +last look+ (that may be a few weeks old), you can restore the complete volume using Time Machine to within the last hour before failure or to ANY past archived state.
Although I did not trust Time Machine initially as my only backup, I now treat it as my only backup for most of my personal data. I would trade the automatic +set it and forget it+ background process and the +restore to within one hour+ recency of the backup, to the backup being "bootable," any day. I do keep a separate backup (on a separate drive) of my most critical files, not because I don't trust Time Machine, but because it is possible for the primary drive and backup drive to both fail at the same time.

  • IPhoto onto External Hard drive

I am trying to be able to completely remove iPhoto from my internal hard drive and move it to my external hard drive. I have over 8000 and have no plan on stopping soon
I want to be able to open iPhoto from my external hard drive and see my sorted folders I have already created while it was in my internal hard drive.
I have backed up my iPhotos by copying my iPhoto library to the hard drive, but this does not allow me to actually use iPhoto once it is on the hard drive and/or see the photos as they are saved as a mass amount of unnamed .jpg files and I can never find what I need.
I have read that you copy pictures file to external hard drive then hold options key to select iPhoto to use, but I do not have the iPhoto logo anywhere but in my applicatons folder and not in my pictures file. Am I doing this wrong?
Please help, computer is really starting to run slow!

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag it intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - _*fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)*_
Deleting the iPhoto library from the internal drive, of course, deletes it and frees up the space. And note that you need a minimum of 10GB of free space on your boot drive for OS 10 to work properly.
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
What if I only want to move my oldest images, and keep say, all 2010 photos on my computer? Is there a way to move only part of the library to the EHD?
Then you must use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - it is the only current way to move portions of a library intact.
Finally, once I have move photos over and deleted originals from my computer, is there a way to continue to "see" them, perhaps in the form of thumbnails, or will they only been available via my EHD now?
No - iPhoto can see one and only one library at one time - you select a library and iPhoto uses it until you select a different library
You can make suggestions to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

  • Copying songs onto external hard drive

So I am trying to put all my songs on to an external hard drive because I have too many songs and it slows down my computer.  My goal is to have all 25,000+ songs on a external drive as well as keep a couple albums on my internal drive just for when I want to play something from my computer (but these couple albums will also be on the external drive, to make it easier to sync the ipod when plugged in).  I am struggling in doing this.  Several people from the boards have tried to help me out.  First someone suggested this website (http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected) but in order to do this I need iTunes 10, which for some reason I can not update to (I have tried to but it keeps saying my iTunes is up to date and no downloads are needed).  Then I found this tutorial
(http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/) and have tried to follow it to transfer the songs over, including consolidating the files, etc. but I can't get that to work.  Next someone suggested following these steps:
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
Which worked in copying songs over and getting my iTunes to choose only the external drive folder but now I can't open iTunes without my external drive connected.  As I mentioned my goal is to be able to plug in my iPod and external hard drive in at the same time, and sync the ipod that way, while having just a couple albums in iTunes to be able to play without having the external hard drive plugged in all the time. I hope this all makes sense. Is this possible and if so, can someone please help me, I have been trying to accomplish this for weeks.
    Thanks!

  • Recording to external hard drives - Firewire 800 problems

Ok so i did post a similar thread on this in the "mac mini" part of the website so im very sorry for double posting but I thought since this problems pertains mostly to recording and specifically recording on garageband, that I would try posting here as well. Heres my deal:
I am a musician working with garageband and I have always been recording to my internal drive until recently. I was unaware until I read some posts here from the good people like you guys, that that is not a good idea to record to your internal drive. So, I got an external firewire 800 drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DGZ05A) and this cable (http://www.amazon.com/2M-Firewire-800-9PIN-Cable/dp/B000XQILWK/ref=pdbxgy_e_imgb). When I received it, I first used disk utility and reformatted it for Mac OS Extended Journaled. Then I proceeded to move a couple sample libraries and my entire "Garageband" folder (with my saved songs in it) to the external. I instantly knew something was wrong. The files were taking forever to get written over. It took about 15 mins for a 5GB folder to be moved over. I was already discouraged. Anyway, I plugged in the USB cable that came with the external (the drive has hook ups for both USB 2 and firewire 400/800) and tried moving the same files and it was MUCH faster. The same 5GB file was moved over in a matter of minutes.
I then tried recording to the drive (using firewire again) and it would hardly even PLAY the song without stopping every couple seconds (too many effects error, and yes ALL the tracks were locked). Tried to record as well and i'd get even less time before garageband would stop the song with the same error. So I disconnected firewire and went USB. Thru USB the song didnt stop once, not on playback OR recording. Then I moved the songs back to my internal and played them (and recorded) with no problem either.
I ran a couple tests on the drive using AJA system test and came back with these results:
Basic test of read/write speed using firewire 800:
    write - 14/mb sec
    read - 21/mb sec
    then, using usb 2.0
    write - 18/mb sec
    read - 37/mb sec
both these connections seemed to be running slower then they should ..but at least the USB connection would actually let me play a song and record to it without stopping
I manually copied over a 2.04GB file and via firewire 800 connection it took 2 mins and 20 secs. Via the USB 2 connection it was 55 seconds! ..also, while i transfered the files i noticed that the USB transfer was nice and steady with tiny increments of the file being transferred. Firewire, however, was speedy then slow, speedy then slow. Very inconsistant transfer speed throughout the process. kind of choppy
So what gives? I cant figure out if I'm doing something wrong, or if my external HD is bad? Or the cable is bad? Or maybe the firewire port on my mac mini is bad (i've never used it before for anything other than this external drive). Or i'm thinking maybe my processor isnt strong/fast enough to record to the external firewire drive? Im working with a mac mini 120GB internal HD and the 2ghz intel core 2 duo with only 2GB ram (i know thats not ideal for recording and im planning to upgrade at some point, but i have been recording to the internal just fine with the RAM i have now and never had a problem until trying to record to the firewire drive). I was going to go out today and get a new cable and see if that was the cause of it. Anyway sorry for the book-length post! But PLEASE SOMEBODY help me here! ..as i said, im not very computer literate and only just started producing music using computers so please use dummy terms lol ..thanks in advance

Strictly my opinion, and more than happy to be educated with facts and convinced otherwise... but, there are no dangers.
Bottom line is this... does your specific computer setup encounter ANY problems during recording or editing with your chosen software and current workflow? If not, then there is nothing wrong. Simple as that. Further, if you are having problems, then its more than likely dealt with by upgrading RAM amount and internal HDD speed and size. If you have a slightly older machine that is pre FW800, you will find by bench marking your HDD's that an upgraded internal system HDD will significantly outperform any external HDD read/write spec's. Even with FW800, comparing apples with apples, your system HDD will more than likely have better spec's. Please however, do not take my word for this, but try it out for yourself. Make sure you have facts about your own system rather than believing my claims or anyone else's claims. I used Intech's Quickbench http://www.speedtools.com/QuickBench.html to get some facts about my machine.
There will be an argument made that you will be putting strain on your hard drive by recording to the system drive because it not only has to deal with this function but also with other functions related to your audio programs and OS. Apparently you may be working it on the 'hard' side and shorten its life span. Probably technically correct but practically speaking you will more than likely never even notice any such strain. If you are worried about a system HDD crash or death because you are working it too hard then the answer to this is a well planned back up regime. You should have one anyway, regardless of setup.

  • Slow start when record to external hard drive

I'm new to this so bare with me. When set up to record multitrack to my external drive, (via firewire 400 connection) it takes several minutes to start on my macbook. Seems to start ok with internal hard drive. Also experiencing disc too slow error about 40 minutes into recording. Any help would be appreciated.

Open up Disk utility. It's in your Utilities Folder.
Select your external disk in the left column.
In the lower left corner, you should see this, which will tell you how it's formatted:
If it says Mac OS Extended, you're OK, and there's another problem.
If it doesn't (it might say FAT32 or NFTS) then _backup all the contents of that drive first_, and after you're sure it's backed up, format the drive, following the instructions in Disk Utility.

Have made 4 movies with IMOVIE 6 saved them as dv files and want to export them off the laptop but am unable to do so, message appears (Error 0). there is nothing wrong with the external hardrive as I have exported avi files, photos and music to this drive, so am confused as to why I cannot do this simple task? and need to get export to clear up space on the laptop hard drive, can anyone help me out here? I have downloaded VLC Lan player, thought this might help, but still no success.

Check the file format of your drive.
Most ship formatted for Windows and you should use the Disk Utility app to properly format it for Mac use.
