Recording Podcast / Using Garageband on Macbook Air

Hi guys,
Quick computer question, I currently record my podcast on a Macbook Pro - 2010 model - 2.4Ghz intel core 2 duo processor, 8GB RAM, NVIDOA GeFore 320 256MB.
I've been offered a chance to upgrade to a current MacBook Air at work. I'd quite like an Air as I carry my computer around, etc. I record using Garageband and a USB microphone, but I've had some issues with the system crashing in the past.
Would a current MacBook Air be OK to record and edit podcasts on? If so, which current model would be best suited to this?
Sorry if this a really obvious question, I just want to make sure I make the right choice!

I've been offered a chance to upgrade to a current MacBook Air at work.
A new MacBookAir with Mavericks will come with the current GarageBand 10.0 version and not GarageBand '11. And unfortunately, GarageBand 10.0 does not support the podcast feature. So be aware, that you will need to find a way to install GarageBand '11 on the new MBA. If you have installer disks for iLife '11 or the system install disks with the bundled iLife applications, create disk images, while you still have a mac with an optical drive. The MBA has no longer a CD/DVD drive.

As long as it's USB, any one will work (If you're only using it for your Mac, then use Disk Utility to Partition it as GUID/HFS+).

Why my Toshiba mobile hard drive (1TB) can not be used in the macbook air?

If you are speaking of the USB 3.0 Canvio, you are not alone. Call Toshiba and check on their progress in alleviating the problem. I heard they are blaming Apple, but since theirs is the only drive that exhibits this problem, I think the burden is on Toshiba.
Some users have reported that by using a micro USB 2.0 connector (see bottom picture), instead of the 3.0 that comes with the drive, that it is a workaround. Notice that the 3.0 connector has sort of a "dual head" nature to the construction. One part of it is 2.0 USB micro compatible. I've never tried it myself though.

Saving as a PDF file for some users have been a problem.  If you boot into  Safe Mode and run iPhoto you can create undamaged PDF files.  We don't know why the problem but this is a workaround.
This problem prevents many from ordering books, calendars and cards since iPhoto creates PDF file of them for uploading and printing.  Booting into Safe Mode lets them successfully order those items.

  • What is the best projector to use with a macbook air

Need a trouble free projector to use with my macbook air for showing photos and business documents , excel eyc.

If you don't mind connecting the projector directly to the Mac with an HDMI cable, any projector with an HDMI input will work. There are a very large variety to choose from. Projector People is a competent vendor that I have used and can recommend. They are knowledgeable about Macs. Describe your needs and they will make recommendations. Their prices are as good as you are likely to find anywhere else.
You will also need a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. Purchase one from Monoprice. They are less than $10.

i have purchased (veranda magazines) for my IPHONE which I would like to use on my macbook air. Do I have to repurchase these app or is there some way to get them in my macbook air with no charge?

Veranda Magazine is a free app available for iOS devices in the iOS App Store.  You then purchase a Veranda Magazine subscription from within the app.  In other words, the app itself is free, but the contents are not.
There is no way to duplicate or import this to a Mac.  Your Mac runs a totally different operating system.
iBooks can now import to Mac since OS X Mavericks came out about a month ago.  But that does not apply to magazines or iOS Newsstand publications.

Keep in mind you can also use the optical drive of another computer to upgrade OS X. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2129 has information on how to do that. This works on a Windows PC as well as a Mac.

  • For Garageband Use only - RevA Macbook Air 1.6 80Gb HDD or 1.8 64Gb SSD?

    Hi,
I'm about to buy a refurb Rev A Macbook Air for only using Garageband. (Reasons for choosing it over Macbook are portability and screen quality).
Am I going to notice any difference between the 2 models (1.6 80Gb HDD and 1.8 64Gb SSD) for pure Garageband use?
    - I'm mainly going to be using the software instruments/loops (but might on a rare occasion record in an audio track - never more than one per song though). I don't think I'd ever get to more than 16 tracks, probably maxing at about 8.
    As they are $300 apart.
Also am I going to be able to run Garageband with an ease comparable to running it a new low-end macbook? As I know the RevA's get hot under the collar with some apps. I tried Garageband on the white macbook today and it was fine - quick, smooth and easy - but obviously there were no RevA Macbook Airs instore to compare.
Final question - as this will be my first mac and I have only tried garageband on a few occasions - what is the size of an average Song file with no audio running about 8 tracks of midi (so I can figure out how many I can get on the harddrive).
Many thanks for any opinions/answers/comments - all input is much appreciated.

Since you haven't mentioned how you attempted formatting the drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Best digital audio interface for Garageband on Macbook Air?

Hi everyone, fairly new to all this stuff. I'd love to record some songs in garageband using my electic and acoustic guitars, and a microphone for vocals. I soon learnt for this I'd require a digital audio interface so I began my research.
I'm on a Macbook air so I saw I'd need one that runs from USB... and after a bit more searching I found Apogee seem to be a recommendable company.
Can anyone point me in the direction of one of their products (or any companies' product) that will do the job of recording my guitar (from a standard jack cable) and my vocals (from a standard band-style microphone) that will 100% work with Garageband on my Macbook Air via USB? I'm on a budget of as cheap-as- possible, but I'd like a fair amount of quality in the product, so any price you can reccomend will be considered.
Any help is greatley appreciated, apologies if this is not the relevant section or even site to ask this question.

You can have the best or you can have cheap but not both. Good interfaces start around $80 and great ones can be several thousands.
I bought several items from sweetwater lately and really like them. So here is a link to usb interfaces. Any of the other big music supply store will have equal deals.

  • How can i control my new mac mini using my new macbook air? Thanks

Hi, I would like to control and even file share my macmini using my macbook air... the mac mini is plugged into the family 50inch plasma... so getting access to it is not always easy! I'd like to play itunes, films, file share, just about do everything from the macbook air as if I was on and in front of the macmini... i'm hoping to do this from any country using wifi!
I've looked at screens - vnc client, but can;t find anywhere where it says I should download the app... is there a master to download to the mac mini, then waht do i download to the macbook air to enjoy control... also am i expected to download twice and pay twice?
I'm very new to the mac world... loving it, but lots to learn! Appreciate your help, thank you
    Chris
PS... bonus if I can also control the mac mini using my iphone4 and ipad 2 (yup, my bank balance took a major hit.... apple certainly got me hooked!)

Sceen sharing is built into the OS  go to your help in the finder and type in "screen sharing"
To set up screen sharing: (on the mini)
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
All users: Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
Only these users: Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.Click Add at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Accounts preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list and click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen: Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password: Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen.
It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • Can I use a USA macbook air in the UK without issue?

    Hello all
I am acutely aware of the customs and taxation issues that occur with buying from abroad, but I wanted to know if there are issues with:
Voltage; US sockets are 120v and UK are 240v. I know the macbook air's tech specs state that they can handle line voltage of 100-240v and a Hertx rate of 50-60Htz, which should make it ok, but not sure...
Software; apart from converting everything into proper english (), will I be limited in the compatability dept (e.g. can I download from UK Mac App store and install UK software without issue), etc.?
Repairs; can I take it to a UK Apple store and will my warranty still be valid?
Thanks, hope you all enjoy your mac as much as me !
    Regards,
    Mohammad Syed

All you need is a suitable adapter to allow the 2 pin power prong or 3-pin cable to plug into a UK outlet. Apple sell an international adapter set (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/B?fnode=MTY1NDEwMQ) which, at $39, is really a bit overkill for travel to one location, when a quick search on Amazon for 'UK Travel Adapter' provides a number of options closer to $5.... and which would do the job perfectly well - you can find the same adapters in Amazon's UK store too, so you can get them once you arrive there if you prefer.
Software; apart from converting everything into proper english (), will I be limited in the compatability dept (e.g. can I download from UK Mac App store and install UK software without issue), etc.?
You'll need to create an account in the UK store, but there is nothing to prevent you installing and using UK-sourced software along with already installed US applications.
Repairs; can I take it to a UK Apple store and will my warranty still be valid?
Yes. Apple warranties on laptops are international. Make sure you have proof of purchase with you and you should be good to go.

  • Bootcamp, A2DP using Vista on Macbook Air ( How To )

    Hi,
Thought I help those out who've recently picked up a Macbook Air and get them running on Bluetooth/Windows. People complain about the 1 USB, but who cares, the only thing I've got in the USB (when needed) is the Superdrive and everything else running off Bluetooth! Yes streaming A2DP on Vista on your Macbook Air !
What is Bluetooth A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile). Allows streaming audio to your A2DP compatible headset without the hassle of wires or having to plug in USB or stereo cables. If you've got the AIR this is a must do, it's just plain cool right? LOL.
    Here's some tips:
    Bootcamp
    1. YOU NEED THE SUPERDRIVE. I tried several other brands (i.e. LG) they work as regular drives but NOT for Bootcamp/Windows install.
    2. XP and Vista run great but please note, as this was such a hassle, you must use XP with SP2 (don't try installing with any other version then attempt to update, let's just say "pain in the ***"). If using Vista (and have the 5 cd version), make an .iso of cd1, then import the /source files from the other 4 discs into the /source dir on cd1 iso then burn to DVD.
    3. Don't freak out on first startup, insert the DISC 1 the came with AIR. It'll stick all the proper drivers.
    4. I installed Vista SP1 last night, ran fine except I initially lost my soundcard output (not input, weird), but simply reinstalling the bootcamp drives resolved that issue.
    *Bluetooth on Windows*
    1. Following basic mouse/keyboard instructions worked flawlessly no issues with Wireless Apple Keyboard (from G5 series). I wish Apple would release the new thin model WITH keypad (hint hint). Using Microsoft 5000 bluetooth mouse no problems.
    2. Here's the pain in the ***, A2DP. I'm using a Jabra BT8010. Vista picked up my device and 4 services (Audio Sink, Handsfree Teleophony, Headset, Remote Control) whereas XP didn't have any services. Yes I tried broadcom, bluesoleil on XP, but could not find my bluetooth device, thus I went with Vista. Now for those four services above, Windows kept pointing me to Broadcom site for drivers and I've tried some google hacks without avail.
Then I found success using the following Dell drivers: http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R142181.EXE
Extract the .exe. When windows asks you for drivers for your Headset Services, point them to \BT350A00\32Bit\Drivers\
3 of 4 services installed flawlessly, I had to initiate the Headset Audio driver install a second time to make it work and voila! I have full streaming audio, Skype, MSN, Youtube, Winamp....etc!
    Hope this helps anyone out.
    Cheers,
    Nolan

Wanted to check this out...so played with BT on Leopard via iTunes. I have to say that the 'use as headphones' option plays quite clean (bass/treble presence, almost similar with wired headphones) not like listening to music through a cellphone call as the typical 'use as Headset' bluetooth option sounds like.
It's probably not audiophile clear but sounds pretty **** good.
Update: For kicks fired up Fusion with Bootamp (Vista), fired up Windows Media Player and it was playing through the 'use as headphones' bluetooth off host, pretty wild (both in single window and unity modes).
Curious, has anyone got A2DP on Windows XP bootcamp?
