Recording Satelite program to macbook pro

Hello,
Can I record video/audio from a satelite receiver using it's Dvi/Toslink outputs into a Macbook pro?
Does Apple have any type of software to support this?
Could I have the Laptop wake up at a certain time and record whats coming in from it's Inputs, to a certain folder?
It seems silly to me to buy a PVR when Apple is so Media friendly.
thanks for your help,
Vance

Are you putting that mic in front of an amp? You should specify what that "good (expensive) mic" is (condenser? dynamic), but you'll probably have an even harder problem getting its sound into the computer, since mic level is lower than line level.
I'd suggest trying to plug the Strat in directly and play with GB's amp models. If you can't get enough level, you should pre-amp the guitar, for example with a mixing console, or get an audio interface.

  • Record television show to Macbook Pro

    Hey everyone.
There is a show tomorrow on my television and I really want to record it to my Macbook Pro.
I don't know how to record from tv to my Macbook Pro. It's my first time.
    I just got my Macbook, a tv and this mini-display port(Mini-Displayport-Male-to-Male-Cable-with-Gold-Plated-up-to-10-8gbps-Video-Bandwi dth.jpg)
Do I need some software or some cable or some other thing to do this recording?
I really want the easiest and cheapiest method to this recording.
    thank you.

If you read the website, the instructions are there.
In a nutshell, you need to purchase a TV tuner and the software.  The tuner is inserted in a USB port and connected to cable or an external TV antenna via a coaxial cable.  The software will allow you to record a TV program which creates a file.  That file can be viewed again and if you wish, edited to remove sections that one might not want.  It will record and play HD TV.
I have a slightly older version of this:

  • Voice recording on a 2011 MacBook Pro?

How do I make a voice recording on a 2011 MacBook Pro?

I've upgraded the same model to Mavericks without any issues or problems. If you are worried, then make a backup before you upgrade. Simple enough precaution. If you find you cannot access your external data drives, then erase the internal drive and restore your backup. You can make a cloned backup using the Restore option in Disk Utility which will also clone the Recovery HD that you would need should you decide to restore the backup.

  • Transfer of programs from Macbook Pro to Macbook

Hello friends, I purchased from apps store,  pages, Mac OX  and some more programs for Macbook pro which I borrowed from a friend. Now I own a Macbook model 7,1 aI have two concerns: 1. Is there anyway I can transfer or reload the programes that I bought earlier and installed on say Machine no.1: to Machine 2?
I bought latest versions of all programs, will they be compatible with Macbook 7,1 model?
Thanks in advance for your attention and effort to reply.

If you are returning the MacBook Pro to the friend, legally you must erase the Mac and restore it to the version of OS X that was on the Mac when the friend loaned it to you. The OS and all the apps that you bought are yours, your Apple ID is encoded in them and they can only be updated with your Apple ID. To leave them on the MacBook Pro is to assist your friend in software piracy.
To install apps that you have previously bought, as long as the apps are still available in the Mac App Store (MAS), open the MAS on the Mac, sign into your account (Store menu), go to the Purchases pane and download the apps.
MAS apps are sometimes restricted to a certain version of OS X or higher, so the version installed on the Mac  that you bought will determine if you can use the apps that you previously bought.

  • Any outdated Mac Programs on MacBook Pro '09 that I can or should delete to save space?

There are some Mac Programs that came with my late 2009 MacBook Pro that I **think** are outdated / unsupported and I am wondering if I can or should delete them to free up critical space. (I use my MacBook Pro for genealogy files and kids' photos and videos so I often get a critically low on space issue -
like down to 25GB or less out of 250GB).
Some programs I have never really used, but I hate to delete anything that came with the Mac that I might one day have a use for or want if I was to sell it or
trade it, but I think some programs are no longer supported.
Among these that I have questions on are iWork '09, iWeb that I think may no longer be supported. (Never used them anyway really - I have pages and Numbers that may be part of iWork, but I also have the Mac version of Office installed). I have 2 different versions of Pages. I think the old version
(which I had created some documents in) was the old purplish ink jar icon and the newer one looks like a piece of paper with a pencil or pen icon.
I have created files in the old version, but not the new version. Can I safely delete the old icon / app without affecting those old files?
I never used the old version of Numbers or Keynote, so I already deleted the old icons for those.
Others that I am not sure if I need or what came originally with the Mac vs. downloaded later (like from the app store) include:
Apple Script, ArcSoft Connect Suite, Automator, Dashboard, Dictionary, DVD Player, iDVD, iMovie, PanoramaMaker, PhotoBooth, Tech Tool Deluxe,
    the Unarchiver, VirusBarrier Express.
GarageBand came with, but I have never used it. Hate to delete it unless I really can't afford it.
To my knowledge, I have never used any of those except perhaps DVD Player or iDVD, whichever one can or does play a movie unless it will play a movie
    without either of those.
If any of the above are critical or recommended to keep either for proper functioning in general or to do certain recommended things (like play a DVD and I must have one of the DVD / movie ones in particular), then I need to know that as well as what I can safely delete without either significant issue or
    shooting myself in the foot.
I mean, a Dictionary would be nice to have in theory, but probably not at the sacrifice of space because I usually just Google a word for the definition anyway.
Unarchiver is apparently an unzipper, but not sure I have ever used it unless it was seamless and not obvious. Does Mac have some internal unzipper utility
that could be unzipping my files behind the scenes without my being aware of it.
By the same token, if there are any others that I would / should have on my computer that are known to be useless (GameCenter?), please advise as well.
These are the kinds of things I need to know as well as what some of these are / do.
    thanks

Download and install VLC. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html and get rid of DivX.

  • Trying to install InDesign (Adobe) but when I double click the Install it calls up FTP Client Ultimate?? What is the install program for MACBook Pro?

I'm new to MAC, that said I really haven't had much trouble with it except today I am trying to install Adobe InDesgin but it keeps trying to use FTP Client Ultimate  to do so.. What is the installer that it should be using? I was hoping it would auto start and install but no such luck..

Thanks, I have posted to Adobe regarding their program, but my question here ( I'm new to Mac world) is what install program would normally install this? For some reason my MacBook pro keeps calling on FTP Client Ultimate to do the install and clearly that's not the right program to install a program..
I Love mu Mac, but getting help is a it frustrating...
i'm sure Apple has a program similar to InDesign, but have no idea what it would be..

  • Question RE: Security/Virus Program for Macbook Pro

    Greetings,
I was wondering if you would recommend Avast 2014 Antivirus Software protection for the macbook pro. If not, is there any other programs and/or other applications I should know about or use to help with viruses and security? I was also considering Norton.
Thank you in advance for any help and/or any advice.
    Christian

    Hi Christian,
I was wondering if you would recommend Avast 2014 Antivirus Software protection for the macbook pro.
Absolutely not. Older versions of Avast were garbage that would do nothing beneficial. Their most recent version is arguably malicious. Norton / Symantec is worse. Install none of that junk.
You may be considering them due to a familiarity with their equivalent PC products, in which the case for advocating their use may be entirely different - I'm assuming that is the case since no knowledgeable Mac user would ever consider either product. For all I know their Windows PC products may be reputable.
is there any other programs and/or other applications I should know about or use to help with viruses and security?
"Anti-virus" software serves no purpose on a Mac and is a common cause of problems reported on this site. OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Automated means of protecting your Mac from malware are an ineffective defense against that threat. At best, they will provide a false sense of security, a threat all to itself.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

I don't really know about the new models as far as typical operating temperatures. The ones you mention are not meaningfully high to me. My 2011 13" MBP with an i5 CPU typically idles near 50º C.
As for the speed issue that is hard to evaluate on the basis of personal opinion. You can download and run GeekBench benchmarks and compare the results to those reported for the same model configuration. You can use CineBench to benchmark video performance.

  • Macsafe 85w still not enough when running Heavy program on Macbook pro 2011 Quad Core

Is there any official announcement from apple on how macsafe 85w works & design flow or diagram..??
We know the magsafe 85w is not enough to run macbook pro quad core i7 and their family.. But there must be some reason why apple only allow maximum 85w only.. rite
I run this multiple test on my Macbook Pro early 2011, 17" 2.2 Quad core i7, 8G ram, to proving that the 85W is not enough.
-Im running this test on both OSX & win 7
-the battery capacity is 20% when i running this test
-the power adapter "macsafe" is plugin when i run this test
    1) macsafe 85w turn to green to stop charging when rendering HD movie in Final Cut pro 7 in OSX ( but then it will turn to orange to charged again after you cancel the render)
    2) macsafe 85w turn to green to stop charging when playing high graphic game such "Razor F1 2010" in Win 7 ( but then it will turn to orange to charged again after you quit the game)
    3) macsafe 85w turn to green to stop charging when editing AVCHD on Sony vegas Pro 10 in Win 7 (it will turn to orange to charged again after you quit the program)
    4) when the baterry reach 100%. then I run all of 3 heavy program above.. the baterry will drain slowly until 93% then it turn to orange to charging again.
(this will happen only when you run heavy program) 85w macsafe itself also not enough to run these program.. still need little battery support..
As i know this will happen to all macbook pro since before Quad core model. You must run heavy program, then you can determin this systoms..
Lastly, I really hope that all of this symtoms are the "macsafe work design", & not the macsafe fault... & really hope this symtoms will not damage the battery because regullaly charge on & off.
Maybe This is why new macbook pro design,, you cannot take out the battery... It still need the battery support also, while plugin..
    Thanks &
    Sorry broken english..

"Maybe This is why new macbook pro design,, you cannot take out the battery... It still need the battery support also, while plugin.."
Yes — but only when you're working the machine very hard. Most of the time, 85W is ample.
"But,, we need the official announce by apple regarding this issue"
No you don't. That's how it works. What good would an announcement from Apple do you?

  • Running windows 7 & additional programs on macbook Pro

    Evening all,
Im in the process of getting a new computer and very keen on finally getting on a macbook pro as do fair bit of design stuff etc(and i really want one!). Only problem is if i brought one i would also not have enough money straight away to replace my windows only programs like photoshop, indesign etc so would need to use windows on it with these programs.
Has anyone got any experience of doing this and is the performance affected? or will using photohshop via windows 7 on boot camp(think thats the name of it) be as quick, responsive as using mac version of photoshop?.

Mac's have been able to run MS Windows on them for several years now. You have several options for doing so, first is using Boot Camp which essentially turns your Mac into a PC. Boot Camp is included in OS X therefore the only expense you will have is for a license of MS Windows if you don't already have one. The upside is it provides the best performance, the down side is you cannot run MS Windows and OS X simultaneously. Another downside is as with any Windows machine that portion of the machine is susceptible to Virus's and other Windows malware so you need to protect it.
There are also virtualization applications that allow you to run Windows side by side with OS X, meaning you can run both simultaneously. The most popular options are using Parallels or Fusion which are direct competitors that do the same thing. The upside of this solution is the ability to run Windows and OS X at the same time, the downside is if you are playing 3D games, doing 3D virtualization or CAD/CAM performance will be slower than a stand alone Windows machine. Again because you will be running Windows that portion of the Mac is susceptible to the same problems any Windows box is. I would think you would have excellent performance using this solution with Photoshop and would recommend taking this route. I would also upgrade your RAM to 8 GB (don't buy it from Apple though) this will help performance too.

  • College Programs for Macbook Pro

I am starting College in August and just bought a Macbook Pro for school. What are some programs that would benefit me greatly. I need a program for writing papers, and a program that would allow me to take notes while I am in class. Please give me any suggestions that you have. Thank you.

I used to take notes in outline form using OmniOutliner, though it wasn't always as easy as I felt it ought to be to use that for notes.  I've heard good things about Evernote, but haven't really used it, so I don't know if it would be appropriate.
For writing papers, if you're going to need to exchange files with folks, you probably need something compatible with MS Office.  If you're just going to type stuff up and print it and maybe every now and then give someone an electronic copy to look at, you could get by with something less MS Office compatible like Pages (which can still export to MS Word files but that support is not flawless).

  • Autodesk programs on Macbook Pro?

    Hello everyone!
I am starting school again for animation really soon and will be using programs such as Autodesk Maya, max, mudbox, Zbrush, Adobe Photoshop/illustrator, etc...I already own a Macbook pro (new, retina display!) and was either considering trying Bootcamp or getting a PC. I've been reading countless fourms on Bootcamp and still am not too sure if I should try it. I am concerned that the programs won't run smooth, or will crash often. If I bought a new PC my main concern is having to spend the money to purchase it, it would probably bee 800-1100$ just to get something to run the programs with no faults or lags and wouldn't take a million hours to render completed projects.
Does anyone out there have any input that could help me out? I'd really appreciate any help on choosing and I hope that since this is an apple forum I won't have people being bias about choosing striclty mac.
    Thank you all very much!

I run, and much prefer, Windows 7 Pro. I played around with Win 8, but I strongly dislike the interface (yes, it can be changed, but... it's nothing that I felt like messing around with). Boot Camp will run either 7 or 8... I would suggest Windows 7 Professional. You can but the System Builder disc for about $135USB (or lower - I bought mine from Amazon). The trasition from XP to 7 was relatively painless for me (I'm also running Office 2013 - again, I hate the interface, but I'm becoming accustomed to it).
Go for Windows 7 - I rather like it!
