Recording separate audio and video to iMovie?

I have been experimenting with recording video directly to iMovie with my DV camera instead of using a tape (saves time, as I'd have to import it anyway). I was wondering if there is any way I could record audio from a different source (I have a digidesign MBox) at the same time. This way, I'd have better audio quality and not have to worry about syncing it later. If this isn't possible in iMovie, is there a program that it is possible in (preferably not an expensive program)? Maybe Quicktime Pro can do this?
Thanks.

I like Bengt's suggestions. You could try experimenting by opening a second program and record the audio using both iMovie and the microphone input. Since you can mute the camcorder audio in iMovie after syncing, the last challenge is the sync. Seems like a clapboard would work.
Otherwise, look into a video converter box or something where you can mix the audio and video externally, and have it come into iMovie over Firewire at the same time.
Or, check over in the Final Cut forum to see about those capabilities.
Portable hard disk recorders for pros could have separate video/audio inputs.
Bengt's plugin mic is sounding pretty good about now.

  • How do I combine separate audio and video files into one Quicktime movie?

I have DVDs that contain separate audio and video files in folders marked Audio_TS and Video_TS. I would like to know how to combine these files into a single Quicktime movie. Is there inexpensive or shareware software that imports and unites these files reliably? A simple solution is preferred, rather than getting into complex media editing applications.

Doug - the VOB files (in the VIDEO_TS folder) are MPEG-2 files. MPEG-2 have the video and audio mixed into the one file - there are no audio files to combine.
The rest are directions to a DVD player (e.g. the BUP and IFO's) . The AUDIO_TS folder is used for DVD Audio discs and on video DVDs is always empty.
Many people use Handbrake or iSquint to convert VOB to iPod video though MPEG Streamclip is the best - open the first numbered VOB and it will prompt you to open all of them. ALWAYS fix timecodes when it asks. You can then edit/trim and export to MPEG-4.

You can use the Flash Media Live Encoder to both stream Live video or as a simple recorder, by unselecting "Stream to FMS" and checking "Save to Disk"
It's free, works well... get it here:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder/
There is also a section here in the Adobe Forums dedicated to the software if you need more info.

  • Does QT Pro for Mac allow webcast recording of Audio and Video?

While watching a webcast, say from NY Times, I'd like to record both audio and video via QT Pro (for later viewing). Before I spend $$ to upgrade to QT Pro, can this be done?

If the file being viewed is loaded via the QuickTime browser plug-in (part of the html page code) then the file can be saved (after it has ben downloaded). If the file isn't loaded by the QuickTime browser plug-in then it can't be saved (locally via the Pro upgrade).
QuickTime Player Pro can't "record" the screen (QuickTime X can, but only at the screen resolution).
Look in the Help menu of QuickTime X to learn more about the options.

  • Separate audio and video feeds?

Can I record video into iMovie from one source, while using another source for audio? I'd like to use my Canon ZR80 as a video source, but it has no audio input jack, so I have to use a lav or some other mic for audio.

Can I record video into iMovie from one source, while using another source for audio?
Are you trying to input the audio and video simultaneously or is the audio something you can do as an overlay? If the latter, then you can use the mic input or import previously recorded audio files from the "media" menu after you finish the video capture.

  • Separate audio and  video inputs for Quicktime Broadcast?

I want to produce some real time streaming via Quicktime Broadcast. My audio will be coming from a Mackie mixer with firewire interface, the video will be coming from my video switcher which has a firewire output. Will I be able to combine the audio and video firewire feeds in the computer (or software), or must I combine the audio and video into one firewire feed before it hits the computer?
    Thanks!
    Rob Cook

I just did my first feed Monday night. I used a video mixer and Mackie board myself. I feed the audio and video(component) into my DSR-20 VCR, which I also use for a tape backup recording. This then feeds the QT Broadcaster. I don't think you can feed anything but a firewire machine or iPhoto camera into Broadcaster. Might work with an USB camera/vcr???
I feed H.264 video, at 320x240 with mono 16 bit audio. Hint... don't do disolves, as they increase the frame rate. simple cuts-only seems to be the best. We also fed keynote slideshow into switcher... carefull there, as it produces saturated colors that will effect the signal... the switcher will think the super saturated video is sync and glitch the video. red is the worst, of course. Next week I am going to use a little proc amp to drop the chroma a bit.

  • When exporting separate audio and video streams, the audio drifts out of sync

So this is my first slightly larger project in Final Cut Pro X.
When I export my finished project (around 12 minutes long) straight to quicktime, it plays back perfectly.
When I export using compressor, the resulting audio and video streams are two different lengths. The audio comes out a full second longer. If you try to lay them down in a program like Adobe Encore, the audio starts out perfectly in sync. Two minutes in you notice the video is slightly out of sync with the audio. By the end of the video it's comically bad, over a second out of sync.
What's even more vexing is if I try to take the quicktime file that IS in sync upon playback, and try to convert it burn that to a dvd or blu-ray using toast, the problem re-emerges.
I triec searching around, but most of the suggestions that came up were vauge, like, "Upgrade to a real program like Final Cut." (This was in reply to people who were using free software programs.)
I did see one idea surface where 44 and 48 kHz sampling rates don't play well together. So I combed through my project and found all the 44.1 songs that were used, and swapped them out with upsampled versions. Nothing changed. It didn't sound like it would fix it, as people usually said it was a specific amount of frames off, not something drifting out of sync.
So the question is, does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing this? Thanks! :-)

Project settings can be accessed and changed by selecting the project and pressing command-J. Then, in the inspector, click on the little gear in the lower-right hand corner to access the settings.
Why are you trying to output video/audio separately? If the content plays in-sync when exporting a quicktime movie (using current project settings), you could try separating the video/audio using MPEG Streamclip as a second step instead of using compressor. For audio, don't change the sample rate from the project settings, and use uncompressed audio (AIFF) as the output format.

  • How do I use my web cam to record audio and video? I can get the video to work but no sound.

I want to record both audio and video at the same time. The video works fine but not the audio. I do use Skype without any problems using both.

    PwmBoat,
This made me smile, because things like this do make me smile...  I never make videos on YouCam, but I did this time, so I could test this one out.
You did not say what webcam software you are using...
    ======================================================================
Video and audio recording works on YouCam V3.5.1.4606
Make sure you have turned on a working microphone in Settings:
    YouCam > Right-Side   Settings >
Right-Side, Lower-Right, Select a working Microphone from the Drop down list
    AND
    CHECK "Capture with audio"
    OK
You can also buy (for $38 US) YouCam 5.0 from the Cyberlink.com website and it has audio/video and all sorts of other goodies, too.  (They have 3.x as well, but why buy what HP already gives you?)

  • Consolidating audio and video

I created a movie using separate audio and video from three separate disk drives.  I would like to consolidate all media used on one of the drives.  Will the consolidate media do this or does it just consolidate video?  Can I leave my original media where it was originally or will it be move with the consolidation?

You choose Comsolidate Media for a Project. When you do, it will Move (or copy) the events used in the Project to the same drive as the project. It will also copy any audio tracks from iTunes or photos referenced in the project to the same drive as the project. This is a good command to use when you want to edit a project on a different computer, because it puts everything you need in one place.

  • Synching audio and video not working

I recorded a separate audio and video clip of an interview, and I marked the start of the clip with a clapperboard and spoke the take number and contents to make life easier, as I usually do. The gear is borrowed from the college, and for some reason the audio that came out of the Canon 5Dmkiii was really low. This could be the reason why, when I put both the video and audio into their own bin and right click and merge clips, (with the syncronisation point as audio, and under audio tab checking the box to remove audio from AV clip) that the clip doesn't seem to recognise the snap of the clapperboard or something maybe? Is there any way I can correct this, or do I need to synch it manually? If so, is there any quick and easy tutorial on youtube or something that is recommended?

I discovered that if I put markers manually on the point where the clapperboard snaps, and select marker instead of audio as the synchronisation point, then it synchs up the clips properly.

  • Audio and Video on the same page.

Is it ok to have a separate audio and video file on the same page?  Both are set to auto play with no controls but when I try this set up the audio seams to override the video, stopping the video a few seconds later.
I guess I could try and embed the audio into the video but if I did not have to I was not going to.
Any suggestions or help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ryan.

You can't play both the audio and the video simultaneously, you'll need to merge them.

  • Relinking Audio and Video

I unlinked my audio from my video and now when I select all of my separate audio and video segments in the timeline and go to the modify menu, the link option is greyed out. Apple + L also does not work. If I select an individual video and audio segment I can link those, however, they do not become linked with the rest of the segments of audio and video. How can I relink everything back together?
    Thanks.

on the whole, FCP does a handy job of keeping everything in sync for you, however there are a couple things you can do for more peace of mind:
Whilst FCP doesn't have any specific grouping command for linking multiple elements together, it does have something called "nesting". With nesting you are collapsing any selection of items into a single clip item ... actually you are taking those multiple elements and saving them as a separate sequence, then replacing those elements in the original sequence with a single clip item which references that new sequence. You can read up about nesting in your manual, or take a look at this tutorial over on lafcpug's site: http://www.lafcpug.org/tutorials/basic_nest.html
And DUPLICATE YOUR SEQUENCE OR PROJECT BEFORE YOU START ANY MAJOR MESSING ABOUT (excuse the caps, i got carried away) ... but you should make a copy of things before you make major changes so that you can easily revert if necessary, autosave is great and all, but knowing you made a copy is never a bad thing.

  • Problem with merging incmoing audio and video source

I am trying to record incoming audio and video data but i ran into a weird problem. The datasources merged fine but during playback of the recorded file the video sometimes turns white while audio still goes. For example, if the audio duration is 10 mins , the file length will be 10 mins but the video shows only like 2 mins and then the rest of file is white with sound in background. i am not sure why its happening... i also tried merging the files after recording audio and video individually but still no\ luck. does anyone know why this is happening? thanks

I am working on Audio/video conferancing . Before sending Audio/Video data from my side
to other side I am setting SendStream's setSourceDescription with my own name for CNAME . On reciving side some time i am getting correct CNAME which i set to SourceDescription ,but some time it gives default CNAME which is username@computername in steed of giving CNAME set to my name .
Can you help me to solve this problem

  • I'm trying to record audio and video simultaneously using iMovie and an external mic and the computer is picking up the audio but when I replay the video there is no sound. Any ideas?

Can't get iMovie to record audio and video at the same time using the built in cam and an external mic.

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

i have a samsung hd camcorder. it records at 40 fps, but iMovie will not play the clips at the proper speed and the audio and video do not match up. I have tried to record at standard quality to no avail. Help. thanks in advance.

im guessing that is the speed it records at due to the fact imovie puts a blue 40 at the top left corner of every clip i import.
