Recording Sermons with an iPod

Hi Mike Hughes here. I am a full time preacher and currently use a computer (PC yuk) with a wireless, naday lapel microphone, to record sermons. I would like to purchase an iPod to do this with. Either connect a lapel microphone to the ipod and record or connect the wireless microphone receiver, I would have the transmitter with me and someone else operate the iPod. Any ideas what would need to buy to do this would be appreciated.

  • Does anyone know how I can record continuously with my Ipod Touch 5g?

Hello everyone, I'm trying to make my ipod touch as a dash cam for my daily drive. I wanted to my ipod to atleast record for 40 minutes while driving, but it keeps stopping using the regular camera app. Even with dash cam apps, they still give me problems, or they are set to certain recording time. Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Too little for what?
Do a test to see how longe 18 GB lasts. Based on Apple_iOS4Life 180 MB/min that would get you 77 minutes.

  • I want to record a concert with my iPod touch

    Hi!
I've got one iPod touch 4G with 8GB and I'm going to a concert on December and I wanted to record the audio of it with some quality, at least medium quality.
Do you know any application that I can use for it? Or should I record it with an other device?

You might want to check here, to start off:
    http://forums.ilounge.com/misc-gear/241804-recording-concerts.html
There's even an app, though you'd best advised to upgrade your mike:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/concert-recorder-cd-quality/id338045354?mt=8
So much depends on your criteria for a tolerable recording; I don't know what "medium" quality is. Realize, however, that the best live recordings are taken off the sound board, or were specifically mixed for a live concert. Otherwise, there's going to be a problematic level of ambient noise.
You might find it more instructive to record live gigs at clubs as a test before you do the final recording in December.

  • Audio recording with new iPod

Looking at the specs for the "enhanced" fifth-generation iPod, I see no "voice memos" in the "extras" index. Does this mean this new edition of iPod no longer has the ability to record audio with an external mic?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Is it at all possible to voice record with the new ipod?
Yes, it's possible. The roadblock at the current moment is that no recording accessories have been developed and released yet.
This thread has a lengthy discussion on voice recording:

  • Recording with your iPod

iPods are brilliant little machines, but I wish they supported recording. As an audio engineer who does on-site recording, I'm totally frustrated at the lack of options when it comes to recording set-ups. If someone wants to record something with 4 or 5 channels, I have to schlep my computer, monitor, preamps, and audio interface down to the session so I can record it. Even the hard-disk based recorders are either unprofessional & gimmicky or just frickin' huge (like the Alesis HD24 -- you can't monitor with it without a mixer!!). If it's only a two-track job, I could get off the hook by using a DAT machine, but then I waste a lot of time having to re-import the audio back at the studio. I just want to be able to walk into a room and record good audio on a small device. Is that too much to ask?
iPods are fully digital, they are highly portable, and they have lots of hard drive space. Wouldn't it be brilliant if you could hook up a small audio interface (firewire or USB) that had decent preamps in it and be able to record multiple tracks? I would be in heaven. Even being able to record 2 tracks at 48khz 16 bit would blow DAT recording out of the water because I wouldn't have to transfer anything.
I know 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation iPods could use Linux to do this -- http://ipod.hackaday.com/entry/1234000147025394/
but what about the newer ones? Does anyone have information about this type of capability on the current iPods? I'm salivating here... chomping at the bit... and no one seems to be developing anything.

That would be excellent!!!!!!!!!!! But you know what would be better????? If my iPod didn't erase my pictures that I just added. Do you know how to fix this problem?? I added 128 pics and then went to add 100 more and iPod told me it was deleting my 1st 128 I had already added then it had the nerve to add the next 100?:?#$%$%$##^ I don't get it! Just venting sorry....John

  • Are there any voice recorder adapters that work with the ipod touch?

  • A session could not be started with the ipod

My ipod touch 3 won't sync.  I get a message that says "itunes could not back up the ipod "xxx" because a session could not be started with the ipod."  I tried the recommendation of going to edit-->preferences-->devices and deleting the 'back up' file, but there IS no back up file.  I've updated my security software.  I've run the diagnostic for syncing and it said it passed.  I've shut off and restarted my ipod.  Not sure what else to do.  Don't really want to restore to original settings.

I had this problem and found the solution (for me anyway). After looking in Logs I found a lot of "could not create file in All Users/Lockdown". On this XP computer it is here (and hidden):
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple
So I moved the files in the Lockdown folder out of there. Then I got another error about the "pairing record missing" and searching that, found to move the .plist files out of the Preferences directory (all of the above with iTunes shut down i.e. not running of course). These were located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Joanne\Application Data\Apple Computer\Preferences
Then I launched iTunes and all was well again. Maybe you can just delete the .plists out of Preferences, I dunno.
Hope this helps you or anyone else searching on this somewhat maddening problem. I encountered the trouble upon updating iTunes to 10.5 and then trying to sync my iPod Touch v4.3.1. The backup has to work of course before I can update to iOS 5.0.

  • Black screen - can not get in touch with my Ipod Nano

I have an Ipod Nano, latest model. After a short time the monitor shuts down and turns black / standby, can ths be disable?
I use my Nano with the Nike Ipod censor when I run, and it is diffical to get in touch with my Ipod Nano, when the screen after a short time have been black.
Should I see my  runningdata or to stop the censor when I'm finishs running, and press the screen nothing happens.
Press I on / off button, so either I get a voice that tells a lot about my run, or push me 2 times on / off button toggles track.
If I press the + or -, I change the volume.
Keeps press on / off button, turn off my Ipod Nano and all my recording of my run is lost ...

    Possible causes:
    1. Your antivirus is blocking access to gs.apple.com.
    2. Your phone is jailbroken.
    3. Your computer has been used at some time in the past to jaibreak some iOS device (not necessarily the phone with the problem), and its network database was corrupted by the hacking software that was used.
    4. Apple's activation servers are down (very rare, and never for more than an hour or so).
For 1. try disabling your antivirus.
For 2. & 3. you need to go somewhere other than an apple forum for help. Although you can try deleting lines containing gs.apple.com from your "hosts" file on your computer.

  • Compatible microphones with normal ipod?

Can someone tell me what high-quality microphones are compatible with the ipod? I need to do interviews with my ipod and want to buy the highest quality there is. Those little attachments don't have very good ratings and I wanted to buy something professional. I haven't bought the ipod yet, because I see that the newest one doesn't even have a mic. So I'm gathering info... any suggestions? thanks!

It depends on what you will record... only voices, ambient noises, in a studio, etc. But here is some basic information.
Use a low impedance microphone. It's the only way to get a really clean signal. Your options here are Dynamic or Condenser.
Dynamic: If you record mostly voices, a Shure SM58 is a good dynamic microphone. It's the one with the ball-type end that most singers use on stage. It has a little more mid-range in the sound, which makes voices sound more like the radio, but that may not be desirable for other sounds. For voice and other sounds (and what I prefer in a dynamic mic, even for voice) is the SM57. A little flatter sound profile-- better for a wide variety of sounds. They're both bomb-proof... they take rough treatment in the field and come back for more.
Condenser: If you're in a studio, and the mic will not be subject to rough treatment, a large diaphram or a ribbon microphone is best. These all require an isolation mount, because they will pick up room noises and vibration through the stand. An AKG 3000 or BULS; Oktava, Shure, Sennheiser, Marshall, Rode, Neumann... all of these make wonderful large diaphram and ribbon mics.
In more of a traditional, straight microphone shape, the Sure SM81 and the less-expensive PG81 are good choices. They both require power (an AA battery fits inside) and must be turned off when not in use, but they have a wonderful, clear signal and would do an excellent job on a wide variety of voices, music, and sounds.
One thing you WILL need if you use a low-impedance microphone is a Shure A96F XLR to 1/8" transformer. It plugs into your mic on the XLR end and into your iPod on the 1/8" end. They cost about $45.00. It gets a clear, powerful signal into your iPod (or into a Camcorder) and is required when using a low-inpedance mic.
One very important thing to consider is that the iPod only records at a maximum of 44mHz (16bit). For my money, I'd go with the Shure PG81 and the A96F transformer. They're not expensive, they're tough, and high quality. And, if you remember to carry some extra AA batteries, you'll get excellent results. If you have more money, the Shure SM81 has a little wider range... a little more of the very lowest and the very highest sounds -- more than most stereos and certainly all MP3 players and reproduce.

  • I have bought a docking station and my iphone works fine but my ipod mini seems to fit on the connection but only works intermittently. Is it a different connection or is there a problem with the ipod?

I have bought a docking station and my iphone works fine but my ipod mini seems to fit on the connection but only works intermittently. Is it a different connection or is there a problem with the ipod?

I think that is happening is that the microphone is on during this recording.  If you play the music through the iPhone speakers, it will record this sound, albeit at very poor quality.  If you say anything (or laugh uproariously as I did while watching the app in action, then that, too, get recorded.
I am still looking for the solution we all want, which is to save the audio in reasonable quality.
Anyone out there with some ideas?
    Cheers,
