Recording Software Instrument as Audio

Hi,
I am trying to record (re-route) a software instrument to a audio track for live audio (not midi) recording. Is there any one who could help me out here?
Thanks.

another way ( worx for me) is to send sound out to your outboard and record it on a "track".
advantage, is amoung other that you can send sound to analogue aoutbord that gives a "certain" sound".
It will be delayed, but can be synced after.
My reason for doing this is also that i often have external instruments ( synths+sound FX boxes) playing in to lap8. And instead of wiring synth -> fx box -> lap8 I go staright in with synth, send to fx box and record ( or even keep it as midi)( compensated for i/o delay) ( have +20 in and +20 out, so I dont mind using some "inputs/outputs" for sending audio i/o)

  • Can't record software instrument track to an audio track

I'm frustrated at the moment. I'm sure this has worked before.
I have a project that contains external MIDI tracks, software instrument tracks and Garageband instrument tracks. All tracks play when I unmute them. The external ones play thru a Roland synth and audio comes back via ADAT thru my Firestudio interface.
I created an audio track for each MIDI track. I can record the output of each synth track as audio one at a time. But if I unmute one software instrument track, send it's output to channel 1 and 2, set the inputs of my record-enabled track to 1 and two I get no audio recorded. I know it's gotta be something simple that's wrong, but can't figger it out.

If you want to record an internal software instrument to audio you can just select the track and use the "export track as audio" command from the file menu. Or you can select the regions and use the bounce in place feature or solo the instrument in question and use the bounce command and import the resulting file. Logics INPUTs 1 and 2 are not the same as Logic's OUTPUTS 1 and 2. If they were you'd get a feedback loop. If you are careful and MUST do it this way, you can cable from outs 1&2 to inputs 1&2 but you must first disable the output the track you are recording on to to avoid feedback.

  • Unable to hear and record software instruments

I can only hear and record my Korg TR Music Workstation instruments. How can I hear/record the software instruments (from Logic Express 9, Garage Band/Jam Packs)? I have my Korg connected to the computer through an M-Audio recording interface.

    You can hear them by:
    1. Making sure your midi input is functioning   (see a little movement in the transport box)
    2. Selecting a virtual instrument in the box just above the 'out' box above the track volume slider
    3. Play the chosen instrument from midi keyboard,   or draw a region, open,   play vertical keyboard on Left side with mouse.
I hope you don't really try to record instruments in the Jam Packs because they're not instruments.
As far as I know , they're loops.

  • Won't let me save as archive nor change software instrument to audio track

You were able to do both of these before iLife 09. Also, I see the option to archive, but it won't let me select it. Anyone?

One: Locking a track mixes it down to an audio track (hidden in the project package in a folder called "Freeze Files") that is being used on playback, so the computer doesn't have to render the software instruments.
Two: If by "sound modules" you mean the software instruments - no, they are not included in a "Save as Archive" file. As I said, it's the audio loops and copied regions. Try adding a blue audio loop to your song, and the "Save as Archive" option will appear!

  • Way to do THIS? Record MIDI instrument as AUDIO?

I know freeze makes an audio file but it would be cool if there where a visible pool to see the bounced audio so you can mangle it more if creating soundscapes and such.
Is there a way to record what you here (via instrument for example) via a BUS onto an AUDIO track?
    Thanks!

Hitbirdparis, just can you detail the way to
set "soundflower" cause I could not make it work in
LOGIC to record audioinstruments to audio, do I have
to select in "hardware and audio driver"?
    Thanks for your help
sure.. it can be a little crytpic to set up in the first instance, but it works just fine.
you need to obviously download and install soundflower. then, in audio/midi setup, you must create an aggregate audio device, and in this device you include whatever audio interface you have, built in audio if you like, and soundflower. now, in logic you have to choose the aggregate audio device as your audio interface, in audio hardware/drivers.
then, at least in my case, the rest was a little bit of guesswork. I created an audio instrument and made some midi recording on it, and put it in a loop so it was playing something. then I created an audio track, turned off it's output (by selected no output on its fader strip) just to avoid any possible feedback loops. I record armed this track, and then I just started selecting different input channels one after the other until lo and behold, I saw audio levels coming in that was the output coming from that audio instrument track. you also may need to change the output channel on that particular audio instrument track till you find the right one that goes to soundflower, which will then come back into logic on the input channel that comes out of soundflower.
audio/midi setup isn't the most helpful thing in all of this because it doesn't show you a table of what your i/o channels actually are.. but once you poke around and try the channels you'll eventually find the right ones. in my case, for some reason I have had to launch the soundflower bed application to get the audio to start working, not sure why. so if you have no luck, you can try this also.
once it's all set up, it works like a charm.
of course, the other option, being the noisegate plug in sidechain trick, also works perfectly too.
still, I look forward to a total overhaul of OSX core audio and logic so that this stuff can be set up without needing tricks and 3rd party add ons.. and while they're at it, destructive plug in processing directly on audio regions in the arrange would be a nice thing to have too.
I've already written to logic feedback to request these things, if you like you could add your voice to the requests.. the more the merrier..

  • Recording software instruments?

Well i love logic 8 and theres loads of instruments to play with and so easy to use, but when im playing aorund with an instrument with the built in piano roll, how come when i enable the track for recording and hit record then mess about with the piano roll nothing records?
I can definatly hear it but its not recording?
Also im not sure how to connect my keyboard as a midi controller?
It has midi out and ins onit and i have an audio interface with out and ins is this enough? Should logic recognize them when all plugged in then i can play and record the sofware instruments? (my audio interface only has one midi in out/firepod)

command-click in the track to create a region, you can then use the track editor to add notes to that region.
to make a loop repeat, grab the bottom right edge and drag to the right.

  • Live Recording with mics and Software Instruments

Has anyone used the Software Instruments in GB to play live, while recording the Software Instruments direct and live (Real Instruments) as well?
I'm thinking about getting a FirePod or similar, to record my band live using several mics and playing and recording Software Instruments all at once. I'm concerned that this set up might have too much latency and make the Software Instruments not playable with my band live, and perhaps all this might make my iMac G5 bog down.
Anyone have any experiences with any or all of this kind of use of GarageBand with an audio/MIDI interface?
    iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey Hang,
Sorry if I'm talking in circles. That post was early!
I'd like to be able to use the built-in Software Instruments live and record that MIDI as well as the live tracks at the same time. However, I could deal with using my own keyboards for the live sounds and just record the MIDI from them while recording the live tracks too, if that makes the system work. For instance, if the part I wanted was a piano, and the Software Instrument piano used too much processor power, I could "record" with a smaller instrument that wasn't such a hog. Then, in mixing, I'd use the Software Instrument I wanted for the keyboard part. Live, my real keyboard could provide the piano for all to hear.
    Am I making sense yet?
I suppose one thing I could do is something I was thinking of doing already. I could get one of the $40 MIDI-to-USB interfaces to record with the band. Right now, I'm just using a stereo mic set up to record stereo into GB. I could add MIDI and see what happens. Heck, I could enable 6 more real instrument tracks at the same time and see what happens! Then I would know it was possible on the iMac at least.

  • Can't hear Midi Software Instrument & Audio won't record

I have used Logic in a basic way for years and have never had trouble but I reinstalled logic onto a new macbook and using a new interface.
On launching a new project, I selected software instrument, and chose a yamaha piano studio. I can see that the MIDI signal is being received in Logic and will record but I cannot hear any sound.
When audio track is selected, I can hear the sounds being picked up from the microphone in my headphones and can see it on logic...but when I try to record, no sound is recorded.
Is this to do with output settings?
I know its probably something very straightforward but I have been searching the forums for hours and can't seem to resolve.
    Interface: PreSonus AUDIOBOX USB.
My keyboard (YAMAHA P-80) is connected correctly to the audiobox which in turn is connected to the computer.

Do I have to get a pre amp or something to boast the volume of the USB keyboard?
you're recording MIDI, not audio, you can't "pre-amp" the digital signal.
you can raise the instrument volume a bit more:

  • How do you record an external Midi Instrument + Software instrument track down to a combined Audio track ?

I have two piano sounds I'm trying to blend into one. One is an external MIDI module set up as an external instrument within Logic and the other is a software plugin instrument (Ivory II). I'm trying to record the blended pianos into a single audio track so I can ditch the midi track and more so the CPU intense software Instrument track (it's killing my setup....). For the life of me I can't figure out how to assign both these entities as inputs and get them to record simultaneosuly onto an audio track.
My setup is a Presonus Studiolive 16.4.2 with the following assignments:
The external MIDI module's audio output is routed stereo directly into channel strips 9 and 10. By default the firewire output of this channel strip is returned to firewire outputs 9-10 on the studiolive, but this really doesn't matter since recorded audio is being monitored thru the main output buss assigned to channels 17 and 18.
My software plugin (Ivory II) is routed to output channels 17 and 18 which is the default setting for routing the output to the master buss for the Presonus.
On my audio track that's setup in Logic I can assign the inputs to 9 and 10 and I get the external midi module's output to record, but I cannot find any way to get the software instruments output into this mix because there is no input assignment for this.
Is there any way to combine these two entities and assign them to record onto a single audio track or am I missing something here? If there's no simple way to do this, can somebody offer any tip or ideas on how to accomplish the same thing here. I really need to ditch the software plugin. My setup only seems to be able to handle one plug in at a time on the software instrument side. Not sure why that is because my setup is not that old and the memory on my MBP is maxed out at 4GB....but that's another topic of discussion
Any suggenstions would be much appreciated...

    Thanks for the reply....
I actually tried freezing the software instrument track and that had little if no effect on CPU. I then read in the book or somewhere that the freeze function really only works on effect plugins. Don't know if that's true in all cases, but that seems to be what's happening.  Still would like to combine these tracks and I'm guessing I'm going to have to get creative with bussing or subgroups to make this happen. Unfortunately I think the fact that my Presonus board has hardmapped output routings for all the inputs makes that difficult, but haven't actually tried yet. I'm thinking if I can reroute the midi modules audio output input into the Presonus to a subgroup and then route the software instrument plug in to the same subgroup that I can then mix/capture this and hopefully route the audio's input to the subgroup to pick up the mix.
Does this make sense to anybody reading this?
We'll see and I'll post the results if it works....
    thanks...b

  • How to convert a software instrument recording to an audio recording? Logic pro X

Hey I'm having serious trouble converting a software instrument recording to an audio recording. I'm trying to record this drum beat, then convert it to an audio file so i can chop it up and sample it on the EXS24. could anyone possibly provide any helpful insight to my dilema? Thank you very much!

im sorry i should've clarified a little further. it is on the drum machine feature in Logic pro X. i want to sample  the 808 kick so i can change the pitch of it in the exs24 but whenever i go to "bounce in place" this message pops up:
""Bounce Regions" in Place can only process regions on audio tracks and/or software instrument tracks. Click      “OK” to deselect all regions on other tracks and continue."
do you have any answers to this specifically?

  • Audio recording changes software instrument timing

I haven't used GarageBand in years and started using it again today. After putting in some MIDI drum tracks (software instrument track) I recorded something with the guitar. At this point the MIDI notes actually changed time in the drum track. If I remove the guitar track the notes go back to normal. If I move the guitar track it changes the MIDI tracks of that it overlaps in that time frame. As you can see in the screen shot the notes have actually moved around, totally destroying the track.
Is this some crazy bug or an even crazier new feature? Thanks.

  • I record a midi keyboard track and it sounds fine as Im recording it, however, it won't play back in time no matter what I do, seems awfully useless to have all these "great software instruments" and not even be able to use them, one problem after another

I record a midi keyboard track along with a song, it sounds great, then, when i go to mix, playback, the midi track is behind the beat and out of sync.. i've tried every setting I can think of.. the strangest thing is that I've used this exact keyboard in the past with this exact computer, running the same version of logic pro, and it worked fine, now it just doesn't work.. it seems an awful waste to have all these "great software instruments" but they are essentially useless now... it is beyond frustrating to have this so-called "great technology" that doesn't even work and to spend more time TRYING to get it to work than actually doing some work with it...

After re-reading the first post, I don't think it would be quantize, either, sorry about that.
There are a couple more places to look:
Look at the highlights, one is for track, one is for region.  Notice how I have it on MIDI thru (top part).  That has a delay value.  When you select a region, you can have a different value there, as well.  Also, the Track part has a place with a delay value.  These are three delay values that are in addition to the audio preference Recording delay.

  • Convert software instrument tracks to audio

I'm trying to get up to speed with Logic after having been a Digital Performer user for years. One place I'm struggling is trying to convert a track that's basically MIDI controlling a software instrument into a new track that contains the underlying audio (with all effects) of the software instrument.
I used to do this in DP by sending the software instrument to a bus and then "recording"
The bus structure on Logic is quite a bit more confusing (to me) compared to DP and the manuals have too much information to find the answer quickly.
Hoping that someone can point the way.
    Thanks
    D

Either route that Instrument track to a Bus and select that Bus as an Input for an audio track (now possible in Logic 8) and record in realtime (enable software monitoring in your Audio prefs and use the Input monitor of the new track to monitor the recording, select "no output for the recording Bus) or use the normal "bounce" function which will bounce your Instrument also in offline mode which is faster ("solo" the Instrument before bouncing!). After bouncing import that Audio file onto a new track. I presonally prefer the Bus recording method as the waveforms are created whilst recording.

  • Audio / Software instruments - slight pitch mismatch ?

Each time I tune let's say an analogue (audio) instrument to a sampled Grand or any other software inst for that matter, what was in perfect pitch PRIOR to recording, upon playback seems slightly out of tune. As an example: meticulously tune an acoustic guitar to the Sampled Grand of EXPS24. Lay down the acoustic guitar track. Go back to the sampled grand - the very same one I just tuned to - and it is slightly off pitch. I have checked:
    Sample rates match - ok
    Song preferences - Software Instruments - A440 - ok , not detuned.
    Master Keyboard not detuned.
    No tempo changes.
This seems to happen on all songs, all instruments.
    Out of guesses - anyone ? Using Logic 7.11, Motu 828 G5 2 Gig

Checked with your microtuning settings? Logic will report microtunings to plugins-plugins are made to respond to these events. The guitar is fixed at equal temperment-100cents per semitone for each note and octave (assuming it is manufactured and designed well).
Is the sampleset recorded in stretch tuning-is there an option to dis/enable it? Many pianos are uned to stretch tuning-this sounds a bit better to most people as a solo instrument (but can wreak havoc if integrated with equal tempered instruments), basically each octave is more than 1200 cents apart with stretch.
Are you tuning with your ear or a tuner? Your ear will often decieve you from equal temperment because a 'real' perfect fifth isn't exactly 700 cents. Set everything to equal temperment/no stretch tuning. use a tuner to tune. Intonate your guitar-run the piano through the tuner as well.
