Recording songs on MBP 13' good? bad?

Would the second 13' MBP be decent for recording songs on garage band? I know it wont be spectacular but decent enough for a rough demo at least? Also is there a direct input for instruments, or do you use the microphone?

You can buy an old Logic version for example 5.5.1 which was the last one for PC ( hope you can find someone on Ebay ). This will do the job I guess...
2. and if not, is there a good recording software that works on both PC and Mac? I've heard good things about Ableton Live..
There are many DAWs on the today market which are based for MAC & PC, so it is your opinion what to get...

  • IMovie on iPad - cannot add recorded song

I just bought the iMovie for iPad. I have tried many times to add a recorded song which is in mp3 format from the iTunes library to the project I'm working on. But when I tap it, iMovie just has no reaction. It works fine for other songs, the dark green track pops out and wraps around the timeline. I would like to know why and how to make it work. If I can't insert recorded songs to the movies, iMovie just loses it's purpose for me. Thanks! =)

I just had the same problem, only with an aiff track.  On my mac I converted the aiff track I wanted to aac and then synced it to my ipad, and it works!  On your computer go to the advanced menu and click "create aac version."  Get that version onto your ipad itunes and it should now work in imovie.  Good luck!

  • HT1849 Get Albums (sometimes many incomplete)shown in Itunes to play/display all recorded songs other than Playlisting them?

I tunes occaisionally records songs from albums in unique windows folders or into unique I tunes "albums". The recording this way appears capricious and even if I subsequently move a song or songs from a disparate folder to the one in which it belongs Itunes never corrects  its Albums to include all the songs once it has imported them. This is particulary vexing with works like operas, symphonies and musical shows where the song sequence is critical.
Itunes habit of placing songs, even in from the same Windows folder, into unique I Tunes albums also adds significant clutter to Itunes. ISome times i have several different instances of  the same album covers being displayed one after the other like for songs 1,345, 2, 689, 7,10,11 and 12 etc.,
I have gone through several combinations of tryring to effect a cure: 1) manually assuring that a misplaces song or songs are in the identical windows folder as the the originals; deleting and double deleting songs and unique window folders before and after copying them into the original folder; reimporting the disk contets to a new disk drive after double deleting every version of the original album and and every copy of its contents (or partial contents) that I can find by searching my hard drives and back up drives and similarly cleaned up past libraries etc.,
None of this solves the problem.
I do not know how to clean up, or refresh the itunes catalogue and its items. I suspect that this is where my problems lie. I do not wish to turf the whole catalogue and scrub the disk drives where music is stored. The prospect of re-recording the music is daunting and will take a good part of my life time (and in some instances impossible), and I have no Trust that I tunes will not continue to build and organize the catalogue according to its own precepts and fancies.
Once in a whle, the problem appears to get corrected, or I can get a larger number of songs into one album. I have no idea what the magic solution is - though my  processes i think are consistent, my results are not.
I am not sure if this is an issue for Itunes, the songs remain on my drives, and playlisting works if I am choosing compilations from unique albums or downloads, but the I find it a royal pain to be unable to have songs together in the albums from which they were originally recorded to the computer.
Are there magicians at hand? Or is there some simple and relatively painless solution available that I have missed.?
    Help.
    Bob

I should mention that, for the first problem, I do make sure that my new tracks are stored in the folder where I told iTunes that my music is in. Also, when I say the cataloging of my library stops short of cataloging all my songs, I have tried leaving the computer unattended for days (my computer's sleep mode is disabled). It always stops before cataloging all of my music regardless of whether I am doing something else while iTunes is cataloging, or if I just let iTunes be the only program that's open during the cataloging process.

How old was this backup? It sounds like it was at least several weeks old.
You can look directly in the TM backup for the music.
    1. Connect to the external HDD the backup is kept on.
    2. Open a Finder window and select the backup drive in the left hand panel. Double click into the folders until you see a list of folders with dates.
These are the incremental backups. You can start at the top or the bottom of the list but I suggest you double Latest/<HDD Name>/Users/<Account Name>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music. From this location you can start looking for the "missing" music. When/if you find it you can simply drag-n-drop to ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music on the internal HDD.
If the music is actually not in the backups (for whatever reason) then you've got a problem.
You can download the uploaded files from the cloud by deleting the affected tracks from the iTunes library (but not the cloud!), highlighting multiple tracks at once, right-clicking and choosing "download."

  • How to visually separate elements in a pre-recorded song?

I'm hoping to use Audition in a research project to study patterns in music.  I just downloaded it last night and I'm using the trial period to evaluate if it will meet my needs.  I am running the program on a Mac.
As stated above, I'm hoping to use Audition in a research project. to study patterns in music.  I need to be able to do this with pre-recorded songs (songs downloaded from iTunes).  I do not need to actually separate vocals or other elements (i.e. only hear one or the other), but I am hoping to be able to visually see the vocals, melody, base, drums, other accompanying instruments separate from each others (see their separate frequency waves).  So for example, I would like to visually see the main vocals increasing in volume, changing from low to high notes, seeing a note sustained for a period of time, and noting how these patterns coincide with other elements in the song.
I am very much a novice so I am not able to describe this in "music terminology".  I have seen the "frequency displays" when playing a song that show the right and left channels - but all the elements are merged together making it impossible to really visually see any patterns.  I've tried to play around with some of the options in the effects menu (Amplitude and Compression; Filter and EQ), but I have not found an option that provides what I'm looking for.
Does Audition provide the feature I'm hoping for?  Can someone help point me in the right direction for achieving this?
    Thanks!!!!!

    Not really.
The only way to have visually separate elements is to have each element separate.  They'd exist this way in the original recordings prior to the mix but, as soon as they're mixed trying to split them out is like "trying to unbake a cake" (to use a common forum cliche).  If you think about it, this makes sense--440Hz from a human voice is the same as 440Hz from a piano--so in the display (which is a mix of amplitude and frequency) they show up as the same.
It MIGHT be worth you having a look at things in Spectral View.  This is a useful analytical tool for a lot of things and may show up some interesting stuff--but, even there, I doubt it would give all the info you want.
This isn't an Audition limitation by the way...I don't know of any audio software that can "unbake the cake" as you need to.
If it was me, instead of downloading finished songs from iTunes, I'd be approaching hobby musicians and asking/begging for copies of their original, pre-mixed tracks.  There are various home recording forums (indeed, one called "Home Recording") and some there might be able to help.  However, even with the original tracks, be aware that they don't necessarily show the levels graphically--typically there would be a display of the original track plus some sort of automation system (which may show you a line going up and down) indicating what is happening to the levels.

  • Oracle 11g R2 Instance Caging on Linux 64-bit? Good, Bad, Ugly.

    Hello everyone
I hope this is the correct forum, if not please advise best place to post this question.
I am thinking of using Oracle 11g R2 Enterprise Edition running on 64-bit Linux server (Oracle Linux 6.x or Red Hat Linux 6.x) with Resource Manager Instance Caging feature enabled to consolidate about 20 databases on one larger Intel-X64 server (40 cores, 512RB RAM, SAN). RAC is not needed but RAC One Node may be one other possible option as will also be Data Guard 11g R2 for HA/DR.
I am looking for opinions from those who have used and implemented Instance Caging feature in production on 11g R1 or 11g R2 on Linux/UNIX 64-bit OS - please share your experiences - good, bad, ugly ?
Any recent whitepapers and studies on 11g R2? I have seen some information dating back to 11g R1 (~2009), hoping there are some 11g R2 updates on this topic for 2010-2012.
Please provide pointers if you know of any.
Has anyone implemented Instance Caging on RAC One Node (or full RAC)? Opinions?
    thanks.

  • Good, bad or average

Okay, I have established a network using four AP Extremes. Three are extended off a base station that is connected to Comcast.  Distance between extremes are about 50 feet each.
The length of the need for a network is about a football field with two story condo buildings along the sideline.  I have placed the Extremes in the window stills in direct line with either other.  Using 2.4 GHZ with automatic radio.  Buildings are concrete with windows that are length of room.  I have encourage folks to get extenders to place at their windows to extend beyond the front of the window.
If I am right we are talking at least 300 feet total, if that's the length of the football field.
Two of the units seem to get weak and give off poor signal.  We have problems with the signal going in and out thus causing some outage and gaps in the service.  It appears its worst at night.
Good, bad or average?  Any suggestion on improving the network's signal so people don't have gaps in the signal?  Is there another source of devices that can be used that not a commerical grade (expensive) and can be easily installed?
    Thanks.

Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details on how to best place each of your AirPort base stations.

Start writing your LOX for the lates and collections.     Make sure they have all your documents within the first week.   The monthly payment for a 100 year old house is too high.  I think you all should wait to get your score up for a better rate.  5% for the amount you're borrowing is too high compared to the average APR being 4.04% now.  Ar you planning to live in the home forever?  May be hard to sell a home that is 100 years old unless you do some extensive remodeling.

  • Honest Iphone 3g poll....Good,bad,ok?

Hi, I am debating on getting a iphone but still on the fence. I would like to have anyone who owns one please give me a Good,Bad or Ok experience with the iphone, and your city and state. I would like to see if it is as bad as the forums say. I don't see any positive discussions about it. So here is your chance. Voice your opinion. Tell us if you like the iphone what you use it for and would you recommend it. Please be honest. Oh my main reason to get one is for the games and ipod soo any ipod touch info would help too..
    Thanks

    100% honest, I promise.
I love it, I really do. Every day I'll be reminded how good it is when I see how easy it is to do things on it. Granted, I don't browse the net much on it but I do pick up emails via POP3, check the weather and download the odd App and it's great. Also, since 2.1 my 3G connection is a lot better than it used to be.

  • Field recording HVX200 and MBP

Just wondering of other users results with capturing this way and any suggestions. I am recording a concert(~2hrs) with my HVX200, with Neumann & AKG mics along with the onboard camera mics(using all 4 channels) tethered to my MBP.
I have done some 20 min tests in the office and all seems well(720p60 & 720p24). Although in FCP I had to set the device to non controllable to allow live capture, is this right? When I set it to DVCPRO HD Firewire device I keep getting waiting for timecode.
I am using a eSata cardAdapter into a external drive, Aja speed tests show ~79MB/s so I think I'm good.
Will I just end up with 1 large file, is this ok?
So other then a UPS and required power adapters, all should just work?
I have the latest updates for FCS2.
    Regards
    _Eric

I do this sort of thing sometimes, and I would make four suggestions:
Make sure to turn OFF Abort Capture on Dropped Frames in FCP's Preferences.
If at all possible, do a quick start/stop in between songs. That way,
if there's a glitch, at least you won't lose the whole event.
It seems to me that the mic preamps in the HVX200 are a bit noisy.
If you're not using an external mixer, you should at least try to find a mic
that has a high output, like the AKG 480 (20 mV/Pa). Maybe if the music
is loud enough, that won't be a problem.
Also be sure to turn set Spotlight's Privacy Preferences to exclude all connected
    disks from background updating.
    Hope it all goes well.

  • Recording songs on my PC laptop and importing to Logic/Mac?

I have a Mac desktop and have started using Logic for my recordings. I have a very fast laptop that is unfortunately a PC.
I was looking at this software called Mixcraft which looks like a pretty nice GarageBand clone for doing some recordings when on the road. The only problem is that there is no easy way of importing the project to GarageBand (or Logic), the solution being exporting every song file as AAC/MP3/etc and loading them back up in Logic/GB. This is, obviously, very annoying.
    So my question is twofold:
    1. Is there any PC software out there that will allow me to transfer its projects over to Logic and GarageBand?
    2. and if not, is there a good recording software that works on both PC and Mac? I've heard good things about Ableton Live.. would purchasing a license for that allow me to install it on both PC and Mac and have the opportunity to transfer my projects back and forth?
I realize this is the Logic discussion thread but I couldn't think of a better place to ask this in the Apple discussions and you guys are without a doubt the most knowledgeable bunch I know when it comes to this stuff!
Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • MBP performance very bad

So I bought my MBP 13" this summer of 09. It's been less than 6 months, and my computer's performance has been pretty bad (since the beginning) compared to my white macbook that I bought in summer 08 and the white macbook that my dad bought afterwards with the nvidia 9400m graphics card.
    What is my problem?
My problem is that the boot-up is extremely slow (compared to the macbooks). It was fine when I first got it, but just randomly it's giving trouble. I have itunes helper, growl, and stickies running on bootup (just like my old macbook).
2nd problem is that I am seeing the rainbow ball more often for simple processes, like opening safari or an application like itunes. When I play games like call of duty 4 (on the default optimal settings) it plays fine and then it randomly starts lagging and keeps lagging unless you shut down the game and restart it. At first I thought the lag occurred when there were too many activities going on, but it should stop lagging afterwards. Nope! it still lags. In fact, it just starts lagging randomly even if nothing heavy is going on (like i'm just walking to get to the next checkpoint). The same thing happens to me when I play Farcry 2 on my windows partition. It would play fine and then randomly it would lag horribly.
    So what have I done?
First, I cleared some space in my disk (I have 160 gig hdd - 30 of which is for Windows XP) so that I had around 30 gigs free on my Mac's partition. It still did not solve the problem.
Next I backed everything up using Time-machine, and formatted my mac's partition and installed Snow-leopard 10.6.2 on it from Leopard 10.5.8.
    Results:
Bootup still slow (tiny bit faster)
Game still lags randomly (and stays laggy even when things "calm" down)
Performance slightly better, but still not good.
Can anyone guide me to what might be the source of the problem and if possible a solution please?

One of the first and easiest diagnostics to perform if something has changed with your computer, and that is what you complaint is as far as I interpret it, is to log in as another User. Create a new User Account and do this. This lets you know if your problem is system wide or user wide.
Also, and first actually, Repair Permissions and Repair Disk (at least verify) using Disk Utility. It costs nothing and might solve your problem.
If you used to have enough RAM you still do as RAM does not diminish. This of course assumes you are not using application that are significantly more RAM intensive than you used to use.
Leaving 10% of your hard drive free is only required if your hard drive is 20GB in total size. In other words, the amount you need free is not a function of the total amount that exists, it is a function of what your computer needs for swap space and that is a function of the particular apps you are running at any given time. After a clean restart, launch Activity Monitor and click the System Memory tab. See how much green unused RAM there is. Note that there will be little if any page outs. Keep Activity Monitor open and position its window such that you can keep an eye on the page outs. Go about your computing activity and note if or under what circumstances the page outs increase in a significant way.
Ideally you want zero page outs but realistically a few, such as a very small percentage of the page ins is acceptable. The thing is, if your RAM is too little it will show up as excessive page outs. If they are few, and brief, then adding more RAM will only save you the time that it took for the page outs to be incurred.
Unless I missed it, you did not mention how long it takes your machine to boot. That would be very useful information. Also mention how long you recall it requiring back when it was faster.
My suspicion is that you have some unwanted application or process going on taking up CPU time. This can be discovered in Activity under %CPU "All Processes" not My Processes. Nothing should be using double digit percentage except the app you are running and that depends entirely on the particular app.
Unlike a Windows PC you do not have a registry that is constantly filling up with garbage. You do not have a disk that is constantly getting more fragmented and needs tending. You do not have anything that should be constantly getting worse and slowing your machine, unless your hard drive is very very near full. I have tested this a number of times and you can fill the drive to the brim before it gives any measurable slow down with the apps I routinely run. Any slow down problem on the Mac can almost always be discovered and remedied without re-installs or any other extreme measures.

  • How to tell Good/Bad Index

    Hi there,
Please how can one tell an index is good or bad for usage??
    Thanks and regards.
    Texas!

-- When you put data into your table index makes oracle to do more work.
This is because oracle has to do extra work of writing down index information.
-- When you get data from your table index can (not always) make it easy for oracle to find your data.
This is because oracle can quickly search for the records that you want. But not in all the cases. FULL SCAN can be a friendly choice may times.
So a index being good or bad depends on the question "Why do i have it (the index) here?"
A table with lots of inserts happening an index there could be BAD for performance.
Usability is an important factor. Is my index used and used efficiently? This plays an important role in determining if you need the specific index or not.
These are few things that came to my mind when i saw this thread.
    Thanks,
    Karthick.

  • I am having problems syncing recently recorded songs to my iPod. I am using an ion program to record vinyl records to iTunes. The songs are in the iTune library and will play on the computer. When I try to sync they show up but do not play. help

I am using an ion piece of equipment to record vinyl reccords to my iMac and in turn save them in iTunes. I have recorded many records this way and have never had a problem until yesterday. I recorded three songs from records to iTunes and was successful as they are on the song list and will play on the iMac. When I tried to sync them to my iPod they showed up on the menu but would not play. The iPod just skipped over the new guys. Am I doing something wrong or has my ion program flipped out? Any help would be appreciated by this old man. Thankyou

This might sound weird, but here's an idea which worked for me re music that was newly added to itunes and showed up in my ipod but wouldn't play - I simply played the tracks in itunes first, just a second of time or so will do it, not the whole track, then connect the ipod and sync again and this time they played - hope this helps.
