Recording sound with correct earbuds?

With the new 3.1 update and the addition of voice memos, if I get the earbuds with the built in microphone, will that function even work?

I can't imagine your can't. Haven't tried, but I have been using the cheapy headset/mic that came with my blackberry on my 2g ipod touch for Skype - works great

  • Recording sound with Soundbooth

    I managed to record sound with the system 'sound recorder', but when I try to record sound in soundbooth with the same mic (simple cheap mic) there is nothing showing on the meter and nothing records. Can somebody please explain to me what is the problem?

    While Premiere and Soundbooth both support a Windows audio standard called ASIO, both also include a driver that will let you use audio devices that do not support this format.  The driver is configured by default, but may not always select the proper input port - depending on the audio device and what Windows reports to the application.
    Fortunately, it's not too difficult to tinker around and find the right setting.  In Soundbooth, choose Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware...  In the dialog that pops up, you should see a drop-down labeled "Default Device"  If you are running Soundbooth CS4, you should see "Soundbooth 2.0 WDM Sound" listed here.  Click the Settings button, and in the new dialog, click the "Input" tab.  Here you'll see a list of input ports for your selected audio device.  Make certain your microphone port is enabled, and click OK a few times to get back to the main program.  Click the Record button and make sure the microphone input is selected in the Port: dropdown.  Try recording and see if this solves the problem.
    If it still does not record, or you do not see the proper input to enable, you may need to verify the proper audio device is selected, or if you're running Windows Vista, that the input port you want to use is enabled in Window's Audio settings.  You can find this by right clicking on the speaker icon in your system try and choose "Recording Devices."
    Good luck!

  • Distorted / choppy recorded sound with Audigy 2 ZS and Vista 64-bit

    Hi, I wonder if anybody has any idea of why this issue is happening. First let me give you my PC specs:
    CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 @ 3.0 GHz
    Mobo: Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 rev. 2.0
    Graphics: 2 x BFG GeForce 8800 GT 52MB
    RAM: 4 x GB G.Skill PC6400 @ 800 MHz
    Sound: Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS
    TV Tuner:? Hauppauge WinTV PVC PCI II (26xxx)
    OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP
    ?So here's the deal. I have no problems whatsoever with audio playback with this sound card. The issue I am having is while recording sound with it. When I record my voice via a Microphone with the Windows Sound Recorder and then play it back, my voice sounds very choppy. It sounds as if I was talking in front of a fan. The same happens with any program I try to use. If I use Audacity to record sound, the playback is also distorted / choppy. The main problem is with Skype, as I cannot use it to talk to people because they cannot understand what I'm saying because of the issue. Does anybody has any ideas why this happens? My PC is a dual boot PC with Vista 64-bit and XP 32-bit, and this issue only happens with Vista. Sound recorded plays back fine under Windows XP.
    I am using the latest drivers available for this card from the Creative site.
    I'd appreciate your help,
    Daniel

    A little bit off topic here, but 64bit does not mean more performance at all lol.
    Sure, but there are in some cases drastic performence diferences. Under a fresh installed Vista X64 i have less CPU usage, as under 32 bit. But of course X64 uses more RAM (some tasks are double 32 and 64 bit).But the main reason I have more performence is, that the games I often play, get almost a boost. Dont ask me why, but under 64 bit EAW and FOC have the same FPS as under 32 bit. But under X64 I use a bit more Details and a higher resolution. (both are 32 bit games, so its a bit funy )?______________________?Sure there are other ways to install the drivers. But if some Setup dosent work, the first thing I try is to get it via Divice Management. And as this worked for me, I dont waste time to try other methods (Had bad experience, you can break the driver faster than install it *G*)?______________________?Some Questions I have left (after a few hours undr X64 with Creative Drivers):?Could it be, that the driver causes sometimes havy CPU usage?Could it also be, that the driver causes some lags, after you copy a file (the end sound, copy is finihed, but takes more time for "final finish", than without the drivers) - I know that Vista has some problems, on some PCs with copy, and that MS has an inoficial Patch (but dosent help for my PC so far)

  • Recording Sound with video

    I was previously able to record sound at the same time that I captured video, now I can't. I use the on board camera to capture video and an external mic. I need to know how to capture video and sound simultaneously.

    Go to your Sound in the System Preferences and see if it is set up properly and you can test the microphone there. Then open up iChat prefernces, Audio/Video and see how that is set up and see if your audio works as you speak there. there have been some problems with that, and i think you fix it by resetting the PRAM or NVRAM

  • IMovie not recording sound with iSight image

    In system preferences > sound, I have Built-in microphone selected. But Audacity won't record sound (never works anyway) and iMovie will record image from the iSight, but no sound.
    What am I missing?

    You're welcome. After further investigation, not only does the volume in the system preferences affect the mic, the actual "voice over" (microphone icon) does as well, even though I'm recording with iSight and not, specifically, a voice over.
    However, fantastic YouTube video diaries or whatever they're called must be done on a PC or a Mac that knows how to shut up. If there's one thing right now that's about to make this computer fly through the air, it's the fans that rev up to 6000 and even an external mic picks up the noise. Not much I can do about it. Maybe Snow Leopard and iLife '09 solved the issue.

    I'm looking to record something with a microphone, phase shift it (up to 180 degrees), then play it into a speaker.
    Is there a way to do this in Labview?
    I have various DAQ boards (NI 9233) and a microphone, the Sound and Vibration suite, and a PC with speakers.

  • How do you record sound with Apple headphones Mac Pro?

    (2008 Mac Pro)  I'm trying to record a voice over on iMovie, and it won't record sound no matter what option I use for the sound input.  I'm plugging my apple headphones into the headphone jack like I do on my MacBook (which works).  I know  that the Macbook has an in/out in one jack, but is it not the same for the Mac Pro?  I've tried sticking the headphones in the back audio out where I can plug my stereo in and it wont even plug in.  Also I know its not iMovie because Quicktime doesn't work with audio recording either.

    The Mac Pro is not compatible with analog microphones.  Its headphone jack is for output only.  It does not work with headset microphones.  Its audio in jack is line-level, so would need a pre-amp to work with most microphones.
    The simplest solution is a USB headset or microphone.

  • How to record sound with Java Sound?

    I just want to record a clip of sound and save it to a WAV file. I exhausted the web but didn't find a tutorial. Would someone be kind enough to give me a tutorial or a sample code? The simpler the better. Thanks.

    Here's the code I used to record and play sound. Hope the length do not confound you.
    import javax.sound.sampled.*;
    import java.io.*;
    // The audio format you want to record/play
    AudioFormat.Encoding encoding = AudioFormat.Encoding.PCM_SIGNED;
    int sampleRate = 44100;
    byte sampleSizeInBits = 16;
    int channels = 2;
    int frameSize = 4;
    int frameRate = 44100;
    boolean bigEndian = false;
    int bytesPerSecond = frameSize * frameRate;
    AudioFormat format = new AudioFormat(encoding, sampleRate, sampleSizeInBits, channels, frameSize, frameRate, bigEndian);
    //TO RECORD:
    //Get the line for recording
    try {
      targetLine = AudioSystem.getTargetDataLine(format);
    catch (LineUnavailableException e) {
      showMessage("Unable to get a recording line");
    // The formula might be a bit hard :)
    float timeQuantum = 0.1F;
    int bufferQuantum = frameSize * (int)(frameRate * timeQuantum);
    float maxTime = 10F;
    int maxQuantums = (int)(maxTime / timeQuantum);
    int bufferCapacity = bufferQuantum * maxQuantums;
    byte[] buffer = new byte[bufferCapacity]; // the array to hold the recorded sound
    int bufferLength = 0;
    //The following has to repeated every time you record a new piece of sound
    targetLine.open(format);
    targetLine.start();
    AudioInputStream in = new AudioInputStream(targetLine);
    bufferLength = 0;
    for (int i = 0; i < maxQuantums; i++) { //record up to bufferQuantum * maxQuantums bytes
      int len = in.read(buffer, bufferQuantum * i, bufferQuantum);
      if (len < bufferQuantum) break; // the recording may be interrupted
      bufferLength += len;
    targetLine.stop();
    targetLine.close();
    //Save the recorded sound into a file
    AudioInputStream stream = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(new ByteArrayInputStream(buffer, 0, bufferLength));
    AudioFileFormat.Type fileType = AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE;
    File file = new File(...); // your file name
    AudioSystem.write(stream, fileType, file);
    //TO PLAY:
    //Get the line for playing
    try {
      sourceLine = AudioSystem.getSourceDataLine(format);
    catch (LineUnavailableException e) {
      showMessage("Unable to get a playback line");
    //The following has to repeated every time you play a new piece of sound
    sourceLine.open(format);
    sourceLine.start();
    int quantums = bufferLength / bufferQuantum;
    for (int i = 0; i < quantums; i++) {
      sourceLine.write(buffer, bufferQuantum * i, bufferQuantum);
    sourceLine.drain(); //Drain the line to make sure all the sound you feed it is played
    sourceLine.stop();
    sourceLine.close();
    //Or, if you want to play a file:
    File audioFile = new File(...);//
    AudioInputStream in = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(audioFile);
    sourceDataLine.open(format);
    sourceDataLine.start();
    while(true) {
      if(in.read(buffer,0,bufferQuantum) == -1) break; // read a bit of sound from the file
      sourceDataLine.write(buffer,0,buffer.length); // and play it
    sourceDataLine.drain();
    sourceDataLine.stop();
    sourceDataLine.close();You may also do this to record sound directly into a file:
    targetLine.open(format);
    targetLine.start();
    AudioInputStream in = new AudioInputStream(targetLine);
    AudioFileFormat.Type fileType = AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE;
    File file = new File(...); // your file name
    new Thread() {public void run() {AudioSystem.write(stream, fileType, file);}}.start(); //Run this in a separate thread
    //When you want to stop recording, run the following: (usually triggered by a button or sth)
    targetLine.stop();
    targetLine.close();Edited by: Maigo on Jun 26, 2008 7:44 AM

  • Recording sound with Mac Pro

    Now that I am well settled into my Mac Pro, which really is a super machine, I would like to use it to archive our high end analog record collection for The Anstendig Institute (www.anstendig.org, personal: www.anstendig.com) for the long run.
    Since we have ultimate record-playing equipment (cartridge, turntable and arm), we want to archive these analog recordings with the highest possible digital sound quality of the moment, so we won't have to redo everything when the next little advance comes out (that is what we have done for decades now: every time the record-playing equipment improved, we redid everything, and when analog RTR tape became unthinkable anymore, we redid that, etc. Record playing equipment will not outpace what we now have, so we want a digital format that is unquestionably beyond the argument about what resolution will be adequate, etc.).
    For just straight sound recording, without manipulation at all or editing at all, what would be the best ap/format/whatever to use with the Mac Pro at the moment. The ap does not have to be complex or multichannel, or etc. Just high sound quality and little more.
    Thanks,

    There are literally dozens of apps for both recording and editing sound. You will find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    My wife uses a Griffin iMic (inexpensive hardware interface for connecting a mic or sound input via USB) together with their Final Vinyl software. We use it to interface between her MacBook and the audio output from a tape player to transfer the tapes to MP3 or AIFF files. No editing abilities. Just basic sound recording. Works quite well.
    There are many other apps as well. For both recording and editing you can't beat the shareware app Amadeus Pro.

  • Recorded sound with mic too far from subject in a larger room.  Small echo challenge solvable?

    I recorded my actor speaking from a mic that was a little bit too far and in a room that gave a small slightly noticeable echo.  Is there anything I can do in Audition CS6 to reduce this "large room" ambiance and give my audio a more professional sound?
    Adobe Audition CS6
    thank you,
    Robert

    Nothing in Audition, no. You could try Zynaptiq's UNVEIL, but as with all of these tools, the results vary from a slight improvement to completely useless. Because the components of the reverberation are essentially of the same frequencies that you want to keep, anything you do at all, regardless of how complex the algorithm, is going to compromise the original signal. They don't even work very well on genuine reverb, where the original stimulus has stopped. I tried UNVEIL on a nice clean 5 second reverb, and ended up with... a five second reverb. There are rumours that it works better on less reverb - but you'll have to try it and see. It appears to contain a subtle masking system of some description, although on the website the description of what it does, like all so-called 'technical descriptions', is only really intended to mislead you.

    It's very easy to record through the built in microphone with Garageband. Just open a session, load a new INSTRUMENT track, turn off the metronome, and hit record.
