Recording to a different drive

Hello,
I've been recording for over a year on my default hard drive - the one Logic is installed on. I just installed an additional new hard drive. Since Logic records projects to the Logic folder, I created one on my new hard drive and also created an Alias of it to put in the default drive. The new projects are recorded to the new drive as planned. Now I'm finding a latency issue while tracking. To remedy it for now I'm turning on Low Latency mode. This works but I would rather not use it (maybe I'm wrong. Maybe this is fine).
I still have an empty Logic folder on the default drive and when I Save As to it I get no latency issue. It only happens when recording to a different drive than Logic is installed on.
I would please love some advise so I don't twist my system into a knot. I have some clients coming in next week and I would like to be on solid ground again - but also use my new drive.
I'm hoping NOT to hear that the only solution is to install Logic on the new drive.

So, your additional HD is in your Mac Pro, yes?
What sort of drive is it (spin speed etc). It's not a 'green' drive is it? You don't need to alias a project folder back to your boot drive. I have 4 7400 speed (not 'Green') in my Mac Pro and have no issue.
Drive 1: System and Apps (inc Logic, obviously)
Drive 2: Logic Projects
Drive 3: Samples for EXS etc
Drive 4: Backup
You wouldn't want to install Logic on your new drive because you'd have to put a whole system on that drive and boot from it which would defet the object of having a second drive.

There are hundreds (if not thousands) of references to registry files in \Windows\System 32 from within Reader. The registry keys likewise point to a program in the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader folder.
Unless you are capable and willing to go in and rewrite the code for each and every single reference in every last file of the program so that they reference a registry on a separate drive from the program itself, and vice-versa, you will find that it won't work, and if it does it'll keep crashing, and giving you errors all the time.
There are portable readers which are designed to run without the registry references (like from a Flash drive) but they won't function as well as Reader in every case.
You might want to try running your disk cleanup, defragmenting your C:\ drive, and running a compression to free up file space.
Another thing I like to pass along is a"deep cleaning" Disk Cleanup tool
Disk Cleanup can clear out a lot of old, unused, and junk files from your hard drive. Things that clutter up the drive, and make defragmenting take a lot more time than it should. Here's a neat way to clear up more unused files on your system than Windows™ Disk Cleanup utility will do on it's own:

Copy the code above and paste it into a document using Notepad or Wordpad (Do not use Microsoft™ Word™, or Corel™ WordPerfect™). Save the file as "clean.bat" (minus the quotes of course), a Windows™ batch file. To do this click, Save As instead of Save, and choose all files from the File Type drop down menu. Save it to your desktop.
Double click the batch file, and it will open a configuration tool for your Disk Cleanup utility. You will see a lot more checkboxes in the list than your regular Disk Cleanup shows. Check EVERYTHING. Don't worry, these are all files your system doesn't use.
Once you have clicked all the checkboxes, click OK and the window will close. You have now set your Disk Cleanup to thoroughly clean your Hard Drive.
Now we need to go back to the batch file. Right click it, and select Edit. It will open in Notepad or Wordpad, depending on which one you made it in. When it opens, go to the first line, where it reads "sageset", and change it to "sagerun" (again, minus the quotes, of course) and save it. You don't need to choose a destination or file type. Just save it.
Now double click the batch file again, and it will run the Disk Cleanup with your deep cleaning settings.
Copy the batch file to your documents folder and any time you need to run it, just double click it. Now here's another tip that will free up a lot of hard drive space on top of the deep clean.
Also:
If you open the regular Disk Cleanup (Start\All Programs\Accessories\System Tools\Disk Cleanup), when it opens there is a More Options tab at the top of the window. Click the tab, and at the bottom you should see a section referring to System Restore and Shadow Copies (Vista) or System Restore (XP).
Click Clean Up to remove the extra restore points and Shadow Copies of Windows™ that are stored on your hard drive for system restoration. Don't worry, this will only remove all but the most recent restore point.
You should see anywhere from 3.5 to 14 gigs of hard drive space freed up once you do this.
One last thing:
If you have a C:\ and a D:\ drive, the D:\ drive should ideally be used for file storage.
In other words, all of your pictures, movies, documents, saved e-mails, etc., anything that ISN'T a program... should be on this drive to keep your C:\ drive working better:
All of these files opening and closing on the C:\ drive will lead to fragmentation of your C:\ drive and that will eventually cause the whole system to slow down, and could kill your hard drive.
Additionally, you mention that you are low on space on the C:\ drive. That's another bad thing. I've learned over the years that you should never let a working drive (as in one that is running your operating system or even one that holds files you access daily) get below 25% free space. The caching of files as you work on them gets extremely slow if the drive has to jump back and forth between sides of the actual discs to record changes as you make them. This is much less likely when you have 25% or more of the drive free.
Your documents, pictures, music and movies will open from the D:\ drive where software won't always. It's easier to move your files to the D:\ drive to make space than to install a second OS and then reinstall all of your software.

You can change the computers region "only 5 times". Then it's locked in the 5th version/region (until you erase your HD & start all over.).

New PC and want to move library to a different drive location from original PC

I've just built my self a new PC and would like to move my iTunes music to my new PC.
I know this is a pretty straight forward thing to do as I have done it on more than one occassion before without any hassle.
It's a little different this time though, I need to move the libary to a different drive from the default location as my C: drive is an SSD and can't fit my entire libary on it.
I've got my iTunes music folder backed up on an external drive, I thought it would just be a case of installing iTunes on my new PC copying my music to the drive I want it on and telling iTunes that this will be my new storage location.
After a bit of playing around I managed to get iTunes to see all my music again.
I'm having trouble getting it to find my cover artwork though and my old ratings and playlist count.
Does anyone know how to restore these?
Also do I have to have 2 iTunes fodlers on the computer? 1 in the stanard C: drive loaction and 1 where I now have all my music. Can I not just have it all on the 2nd drive?
If I copy the 4 libary files from my backup into the new folder it gives me my old ratings and playlist count back but loses all the artwork and most of the files have broken links to them.

In iTunes under Edit > Preferences > Advanced turn off Keep iTunes Media folder organized, then click OK.
Use Edit > Preferences > Advanced to change the media folder location to D:\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media, then click OK. If iTunes asks to consolidate or move any files at this point say no or cancel.
Open the menu File > Library > Organize Library... tick Rearrange files in the folder "iTunes Media", and click OK.
In iTunes under Edit > Preferences > Advanced turn on Keep iTunes Media folder organized, then click OK.
Open the menu File > Library > Organize Library... tick Consolidate files, and click OK.
This should rearrange the media folder into the current structure with the minimum amount of physical file moves.
At this stage you should find that iTunes is now looking for your mobile apps at D:\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications. Check the properties of a single app just to make sure. If all is well you can reclaim the space on C:.
If it were me at this stage I would now close iTunes, then copy the library files and album artwork folder from wherever they are on C: into D:\Music\iTunes then shift-start-iTunes and choose the library at D:\Music\iTunes. It is at this point that the library is now truly portable.
Having made that work I would then close iTunes, move the iTunes folder up to D:\iTunes and shift-start-iTunes to open it, but that's my preference.

Needs Ability to Configure AutoSave To Different Drive than Scratch

If you edit a large document with limited memory, and are exercising the Photoshop scratch file, a coincidental auto-save can really slow things down because the drive then begins to thrash.
It would be great if the AutoSave could be configured to go to a separate drive than that selected for the Scratch file.
I mentioned this on a recent Connect session, and I'm putting it here as well. I believe it's something Adobe needs to consider by CS6 release time.
On a system with a sufficient number of separate drives at the point where scratch file activity picks up this could make a HUGE difference - between Photoshop usability and UNUSABILITY.
Possible workaround:
Because Adobe has had the good foresight to use a subfolder, it's possible that the auto-save folder could be redirected to another drive through a file system link. I'll be checking into whether this helps the throughput, as I'm not sure how much the link itself being on the same drive as the scratch files could be a bottleneck.

I have an SSD dedicated for use as a scratch drive. So far I haven't noticed a performance hit with background save active, but I've yet to get into really intensive processing with large images.
Since there are so many different drive and drive bus limitations, it's hard to say that Photoshop would be less bogged down using different drives for scratch and auto save. You may find a dedicated SSD is a real boon to performance as I have.

A few questions about mobile recording (RME & MH & Hard drives)

in a couple of months i will have enough for a laptop and a firewire interface.
after quite a bit of obsessive research, it has come down to the metric halo MIO 2882--which i now favor as an option--and the rme fireface.
I favor the metric halo because it is bus powered. this is actually the only thing that tipped the scales in favor of the metric halo, as the fireface has better preamps (apparently the 2882's pre's get hissy with high gain.)
this brings me to my questions.
1) if i run my rig off of battery power, i will not be able to use an external firewire drive. would i get acceptable stability from tracking to a 7200rpm internal drive? i understand that tracking to the system drive is ill advised, but what else is there to do?
2)if it is ill advised to track to the internal hard drive, why shouldn't i just get the fireface and run everything from a power outlet? what use is having a bus powered interface when i can't track properly witout plugging my drive in anyway?
3)how many owners of the 2882 track off of the powerbooks battery, and what has been your experience with this?

Get anExpressCard/34 with a Firewire 800 input and run an external Fw800 drive off of that. (I assume that the ExpressCard isn't on the same bus as the FW400, but you might want to investigate that...) Before you get an external, do a few tests and record on the internal drive. See if the internal is adequate for your needs.
Also, be sure to upgrade your MPB to have a 7200 rpm drive, the standard drive is the 5400 rpm.
Concerning battery life... There isn't a lot of info on the new MBP battery life. In fact, you have to get to the specs page to get a mention of the battery info.

I suggest doing a thorough search if this is a real concern. You can dim the screen and that dramicatically increases the battery life. I am not sure if the MPB have the same battery as the Powerbook, but for the old Powerbooks, you can purchase "tricked" out batteries that have a higher energy capacity.

import has nothing to do with actual drives.. Just ensure the classfiles / archive is on classpatha and import those as you would any classfile

Recording to external hard drives - Firewire 800 problems

Ok so i did post a similar thread on this in the "mac mini" part of the website so im very sorry for double posting but I thought since this problems pertains mostly to recording and specifically recording on garageband, that I would try posting here as well. Heres my deal:
I am a musician working with garageband and I have always been recording to my internal drive until recently. I was unaware until I read some posts here from the good people like you guys, that that is not a good idea to record to your internal drive. So, I got an external firewire 800 drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DGZ05A) and this cable (http://www.amazon.com/2M-Firewire-800-9PIN-Cable/dp/B000XQILWK/ref=pdbxgy_e_imgb). When I received it, I first used disk utility and reformatted it for Mac OS Extended Journaled. Then I proceeded to move a couple sample libraries and my entire "Garageband" folder (with my saved songs in it) to the external. I instantly knew something was wrong. The files were taking forever to get written over. It took about 15 mins for a 5GB folder to be moved over. I was already discouraged. Anyway, I plugged in the USB cable that came with the external (the drive has hook ups for both USB 2 and firewire 400/800) and tried moving the same files and it was MUCH faster. The same 5GB file was moved over in a matter of minutes.
I then tried recording to the drive (using firewire again) and it would hardly even PLAY the song without stopping every couple seconds (too many effects error, and yes ALL the tracks were locked). Tried to record as well and i'd get even less time before garageband would stop the song with the same error. So I disconnected firewire and went USB. Thru USB the song didnt stop once, not on playback OR recording. Then I moved the songs back to my internal and played them (and recorded) with no problem either.
I ran a couple tests on the drive using AJA system test and came back with these results:
Basic test of read/write speed using firewire 800:
write - 14/mb sec
read - 21/mb sec
then, using usb 2.0
write - 18/mb sec
read - 37/mb sec
both these connections seemed to be running slower then they should ..but at least the USB connection would actually let me play a song and record to it without stopping
I manually copied over a 2.04GB file and via firewire 800 connection it took 2 mins and 20 secs. Via the USB 2 connection it was 55 seconds! ..also, while i transfered the files i noticed that the USB transfer was nice and steady with tiny increments of the file being transferred. Firewire, however, was speedy then slow, speedy then slow. Very inconsistant transfer speed throughout the process. kind of choppy
So what gives? I cant figure out if I'm doing something wrong, or if my external HD is bad? Or the cable is bad? Or maybe the firewire port on my mac mini is bad (i've never used it before for anything other than this external drive). Or i'm thinking maybe my processor isnt strong/fast enough to record to the external firewire drive? Im working with a mac mini 120GB internal HD and the 2ghz intel core 2 duo with only 2GB ram (i know thats not ideal for recording and im planning to upgrade at some point, but i have been recording to the internal just fine with the RAM i have now and never had a problem until trying to record to the firewire drive). I was going to go out today and get a new cable and see if that was the cause of it. Anyway sorry for the book-length post! But PLEASE SOMEBODY help me here! ..as i said, im not very computer literate and only just started producing music using computers so please use dummy terms lol ..thanks in advance

Strictly my opinion, and more than happy to be educated with facts and convinced otherwise... but, there are no dangers.
Bottom line is this... does your specific computer setup encounter ANY problems during recording or editing with your chosen software and current workflow? If not, then there is nothing wrong. Simple as that. Further, if you are having problems, then its more than likely dealt with by upgrading RAM amount and internal HDD speed and size. If you have a slightly older machine that is pre FW800, you will find by bench marking your HDD's that an upgraded internal system HDD will significantly outperform any external HDD read/write spec's. Even with FW800, comparing apples with apples, your system HDD will more than likely have better spec's. Please however, do not take my word for this, but try it out for yourself. Make sure you have facts about your own system rather than believing my claims or anyone else's claims. I used Intech's Quickbench http://www.speedtools.com/QuickBench.html to get some facts about my machine.
There will be an argument made that you will be putting strain on your hard drive by recording to the system drive because it not only has to deal with this function but also with other functions related to your audio programs and OS. Apparently you may be working it on the 'hard' side and shorten its life span. Probably technically correct but practically speaking you will more than likely never even notice any such strain. If you are worried about a system HDD crash or death because you are working it too hard then the answer to this is a well planned back up regime. You should have one anyway, regardless of setup.

i underestimated the space i needed for my itunes library. at the time, i thought 75gb is more than enought for my 60gb ipod, then the videos and movies came along. although i cannot put them on my 4th gen ipod, but i did downloaded a bunch of free tv shows and video podcasts.
i thought i was simply gonna delete some already-viewed files as i push the limit, but then the recycle bin on my ipod specific drive screwed up. i can no longer delete anything off that drive. since the partition i had earlier was kind small for my ipod drive, i think i want to reformat the drive to a different partition.
of course, i need to move my itunes library first. can someone please teach me how to move my itunes library to a different drive? thank you very much.

Upgrade from sqlserver 2008 to sqlserver 2014, can I put software into different drive other than C: ?

Originally my sqlserver 2008 software was installed into E:, but I didn't see any drive selection options available during the upgrade steps, so now my sqlserver 2014 is installed into default C: drive.
If there are any ways to specify different drive ?

I didn’t see a place to change it in the upgrade process.
I don't want to uninstall sqlserver 2008, I just want to upgrade from 2008 to 2014 and be able to put the sqlserver 2014 software into the same drive (not C:) as my sqlserver 2008 is.
If previous version was on E drive upgraded version should remain on E drive as well. AFAIK there does not comes an option to specify different drive letter when doing in place upgrade how ever if you do side by side upgrade you can install new instance
of 2014 on what ever drive you like
In side by side upgrade you have to first install SQL Server 2014 and then move databases using backup and restore then migrate logins and jobs using scripting method.
After you are sure your upgrade process is complete you can uninstall 2008 instance.
How do you check your SQL Server 2014 is installed on C drive. Please note even if you install SQL server on some other drive(like D,E..) some binaries always go on C drive thet nature is by default , if you are looking at binaries then its wrong to
deduce that your SQL Server is on C drive.
Can you go to E drive can you see program files..Microsoft SQL Server ?

How to install Acrobat Reader in a different drive?

Hello!,
I was just wondering if anyone out there knows how can I install Acrobat Reader in a different drive than just directly in C:. It goes by default there whenever I try to download it from the site, and there's no option anywhere to choose where it will install the program. I need to change the drive cause my C: is too full and dont have much else to delete from it, but have plenty of space in D:. Is it possible somehow to install the program in a different drive than c:? Please help!

Download the full installer from http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/
When you run the installer, use 'Change destination folder' at the bottom of the panel
If you already have Adobe Reader installed on the C: drive, you must uninstall it before installing a new version on a different location.

We are in the process of building our IDM systems and want to install the MSSQL DB on a different drive than C:. Has anyone else done this and what changes to the _SqlAuth.vbs & SQL4SAP.vbs (which _SqlAuth.vbs called during installation) are required to facilitate this.

I am not sure what the problem here is.
The MMC files can be installed whereever you want.
Where the DB files are located is controlled by SQL Server.
If you already have the DB on C:\
Just detach, move and attach again.
That should do the trick.
