Recording to disc

I am wanting to buy a tv series off of itunes. I don't even have my appletv hooked up yet so I am asking before trying. Will I be able to burn this series to disc so I can watch them elsewhere?

No, definitely not.
All iTunes video purchases are currently protected by DRM (digital rights management) so you can't play them except on authorised iTunes apps on computers (up to 5) or apple devices eg iPod/iPhone/AppleTV.
You will however be able to make a backup of the file onto optical disc, but it won't play in a DVD player. It's essential you keep a backup of any purchases on optical discs or external drives in case the copy in iTunes is lost eg after a drive failure.

After multiple attempts with "Staples Brand" DVD-R (up to 16x Speed) and DVD-RW (up to 4x Speed) Recordable & Rewritable Disc. I tried every disc in the package (12). None of them will burn? The DVD player still functions. So I don't think it's a hardware problem. Any body got any ideas?

I have burned to "Staples" media in the past (about a year ago).
Staples, and many other 'big box' stores, buy their own brand media from low bidders and so it can come from many sources.
If it was dust, wouldn't that also effect the read ability?
    Not necessarily.
I was leaning towards the "Cheap Media" as the main problem

  • IDVD Error: "Insert a recordable DVD disc"

I created a project in iDVD ready to be burned but each time I insert a disc, before any burning begins, it is ejected with this error message: "Insert a recordable DVD disc". I have tried several different DVDs but nothing works. I came across this problem in a lot of forums but with no successful answer. Does anyone know what to do in this situation???

iMovie doesn't do any authoring of the disks, so of course it has 'no issue.' iDVD is the authoring program that actually accesses the DVD disk with a direct burn. Disk Utility recognizes almost any disk, but it also is not an authoring program. When using DU for burning, you are burning from the disk image created by iDVD.
For the best burn success, follow all the others' advice. I use only Verbatim DVD-R disks, burn at 4x or less and have never had a burn issue. My disks play on all DVD players that I have tried. The only issue has been a particular brand of DVD player that misreads some audio tracks, but the other players read all of it just perfectly.

  • "Insert a recordable DVD disc"

No matter what I do, iDVD keeps saying "Insert a recordable DVD disc."
I've got DVD-R and DVD+R discs, but it won't take either.
    This is a brand-new iMac.

call support. If its new you must see if it is a problem with the drive itself.

  • Can imovie 08 record to disc more than 2 hours?

    just curious...

This is dependent on your DVD burner, not on iDVD. If your DVD burner can handle dual layer, then iDVD will too.
from Apple support document:The new SuperDrives built into the Power Mac G5 (Early 2005), iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) computers, and eMac (Early 2005) computers now support DVD+R DL media, which means in addition to reading Double-Layer DVDs, they can write to a DVD+R DL disc. While single-layer recordable DVDs hold up to 4.7 GB of data, Double-Layer discs have two layers of data, allowing the SuperDrive laser to read and write on both layers, almost doubling the storage to 8.5 GB.
With iDVD (5.0.1 or later) or DVD Studio Pro, you can author discs with over three hours of MPEG-2 video on one DVD+R DL disc. The new SuperDrives can also read and write to DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-R, and CD-RW media.
To determine if your SuperDrive is capable of burning Double-Layer DVDs, do the following:
Open Apple System Profiler (from the Apple menu, choose About This Mac and then click the More Info button).
    Select Disc Burning under Hardware.
Click on the Burning Device (SuperDrive) name.
In the DVD-Write section, if you see an item that displays "+R DL," your computer is capable of burning Double-Layer DVDs.
    Also from Apple Support document:
With iDVD 5.0.1 or later (including iDVD 6.x), you can burn Double-Layer DVDs with the SuperDrives installed in most new computers (Find out if you have a DL capable drive). Double-Layer (DVD+R DL) discs have two layers of data, allowing the SuperDrive laser to read and write on either layer, which almost doubles the storage to 8.5 GB.
Before burning your DVD, be sure that you have at least twice as much free hard disk space available as your project uses to allow for encoding and burning; you can track your DVD project size in the Status pane of the Customize drawer. For example, if your project size is 8 GB, you need at least 16 GB of free space on your hard disk to encode and burn the project to disc.

  • "Disc Insertion - Insert a recordable DVD disc"

I get the above error message when trying to burn a project to a DVD. Our eMac will does not 'recognize' DVD+R discs. Says disc is unrecordable. (We upgraded to Tiger 10.4.6 just so we could put movies on DVDs.) We have tried 4.7GB Verbatim and 4.7GB Maxell with no luck. This is the information from the profiler on the CD/DVD drive:

There's your problem. It says it will only burn DVD-R, not +R. The only solution I know of is to get -R DVDs instead.

  • Record vinyl discs to a Mac - how???

Let's say I got a turntable and a Mac. How do you connect the two and what programs do you use to record the files into computer's memory?
P.S. I DO NOT TOLERATE MPS, I want only the highest quality files, Apple Lossless and the like only.

There are several ways to get the audio input into a Mac. I got a Sony turntable (low-end model) on sale a while back, but it DID have USB output as well as the regular line level output. It did not say it was specifically Mac compatible and came with Windows-only software, but the USB connection worked fine with audio recording software I already had. Mac OS X recognized it as an audio input choice in System Preferences Sound pane Input tab.
If the turntable provides regular line level output (that does not require a pre-amp), you can convert from the pair of red/white RCA connectors to a stereo mini-jack using a commonly available adapter and connect it to the audio input port on the back of the iMac.
If the turntable provides output that requires a pre-amp, your can first connect it to something provides the pre-amp function (such as a stereo receiver), or connect it to a Griffin iMic.
    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic
Once you have the sound coming into the iMac, you can test-listen to it through the iMac's speakers using a simple program called LineIn
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18987
which +plays through+ the audio input to the iMac's speakers.
To record the audio input, you will need to use an audio recording program. Once you are running an audio recording program, you no longer need to have LineIn running because the recording software should provide a play through function.
There's a free program called Audacity, but when I tried to use it before, I found the interface somewhat difficult.
iMic comes with a basic recording program called Final Vinyl
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16442
It may be usable with any audio input, even if you don't have a Griffin audio input product.
Another one is WireTap from Ambrosia Software
    http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/wiretap/
I have an older version. It works well and is easy to understand.
You should be able to save the initial recording as AIFF, which is a lossless format.

  • You can not export: lightroom does not support the recording of discs on this computer

I can not export my images

Probably because you moved the files to a new location using Explorer or Finder and LR doesn't know where they are. Or the path to the files has changed (for instance, a usb drive has been plugged into a different port and now has a different identifying letter) and LR's old listing of the path is no longer valid. Or the drive is off-line. Right click on the question mark or exclamation mark icon, select "Find missing file (or folder)" and navigate to it.

  • Reading DVD Recorder Discs

    Greetings,
My iBook G3 is a great little workhorse and I am hoping I can get more mileage out of it. Hopefully, this forum can set me straight!
I want to be able to play discs burned from a DVD recorder hooked up to my television on this iBook. The recorder we have is a cheapie TruTech DVD+RW. Much to my dismay however, the laptop isn't recognizing the burnt discs. It just spits them out. (My 17 inch Powerbook is doing the same, btw). The DVD players in my home read the burnt discs as well as a low end Compac laptop. Argh!
    My questions are these:
Can the current DVD-ROM drive in my iBook (MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8176) read burnt DVD+R discs or not?
Would the currently installed drive be able to read burnt DVD-R discs?
Do I need to purchase an external DVD drive for my iBook in order to read burnt discs? I'm hoping to avoid an external device if possible.
Would a new DVD-R recorder burn discs that are readable by the current drive? Would this be the cheaper route than buying an external DVD drive?
So many questions. I am thankful there are smart, helpful people out there that can set me straight.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Ruben

    Hi Ruben,
All DVD-R's rely on some sort of recording "dye" , even if the colour isn't apparent to you. Different ones, use different types of dyes. They also have different forms of reflective coatings. Some work better in some drives than in others.
Memorex discs can actually come out of a variety of different factories. Some of these seem to be amongst the most problematic of all in Macs.
Head to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia , type Memorex into the search field and hit return. You will see that while some Memorex discs fair quite well, others have pretty mediocre performance.
I think you should try a different brand of disc before assuming there is anything aactually wrong with your computer. There may be, of course, but disc incompatibility is so common that it is worth eliminating first.
For my part I've always found that TDK and Verbatim disks work well in all of my optical drives.
    Cheers

  • I've burnt a slideshow of my photos onto a DVD disc but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays ok on my acer laptop. I burnt the same disc with slideshow from my old dell computer

I've burnt a slideshow of my photos on my Apple Mac to a DVD+REW disc but it will not play on my DVD player or on a combined DVD/TV. However it will play on my wife's Acer laptop. I then erased the disc & burned another slideshow from my ancient Dell computer onto the same disc &it played just fine on everything. So it seems the problem ids somewhere in the Apple Mac process. Any ideas?

Mac's used to be supplied with iDVD authoring software but Apple discontinued it in 2011.
Thanks for that.  Will need to check iSkysoft out.  I am in the process of looking for a VisualHub replacement/backup.  Especially when it comes to ease of use.  Toast is ok.  Just looking for something along the lines of VH.

How do I record music from a music cd to my MacBook Pro?  Up until this morning I would get a pop up window that asked if I wanted to play or record the disc I just put in.  That screen no longer appears - a disk starts to play.  I can stop the auto play but how do I add the music to my existing music collection?

Do you mean "how do you rip a CD to iTunes?" If so, just insert the CD into the optical drive of the MBP, launch iTunes, edit the ID3 tags to show what you want, then click the "import" button in the lower right corner of the window.

  • Keep getting error code -50 when trying to burn a disc. how do I solve this?

Does anyone know how to solve the problem of getting "unknown error" code (-50) when trying to burn a disc? I don't know how this happened

    marobinson58 wrote:

It's an error thrown by Mac OS X's DiscRecording framework (as opposed to an error communicated by the drive's firmware). The message is (as you probably saw)
"The burn failed because of a medium write error."
Could this be a dirty lens issue in the drive.
I don't think there's one single cause for this error. It might be a dirty lens. It might be something else. Not all recordable optical discs work well with all burners. Try a different brand.

  • Strange disc error message- OS 10.4.3 upgrade attempt

In attempting to upgrade from OS10.2.8 to 10.4.3, I get the following error message when running the Disc Utility- Repair Disc from the installation CD-ROM: "Incorrect number of thread records" The disc repair fails and so does the OS installation. This error did not show up when I ran Disc Utility from my original OS Installation Disc.
I have an aftermarket RAM chip installed. Is that the problem? If not, any ideas?

Actually I have just checked my problem and as soon as I start Disc Utility I get a message: ' Disc Utility started, but a background process needed in disc utility didnt start properly' so I may have to ask a Disc Utility question.

  • VO Not Recording CS5.5

I am trying to record a voice over in Premiere Pro 5.5 with and external mic fed through an audio mixer into the computer. I can see my levels from the mic registering in Premiere's audio mixer. I activate the "Enable Record" icon, press the red record button and then press the play icon. I see the playhead playing in my sequence as if the system is recording audio, however when I press stop nothing actually gets recorded. There is no audio clip in the sequence or in the bin. I have tried adding an in & out point in the timeline and this to gives me the same result.
Seems to me like the issue is with Premiere not actually recording a new media file. The audio record scratch disc is set to the same folder as my project. I have looked to see if an audio scratch folder is being added in the finder but there is nothing.
I have watched all the tutorials and read all the forum posts I can find but still can't get it to work. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you.

    Hi Richard,
yes I just ried it again to make sure I am recording onto a mono track and I still get the same result. The problem is that premiere isn't actually recording anything, even though I see the playhead moving as if it is.

  • Can't Burn Dual Layer BD Disc with Share Option

I burn bluray discs from FCP 7 using the "share" option, and each time I do it, it's a crapshoot whether it will work or not, particularly with dual layer discs (50GB) as is the case now.
Bacially, after waiting the 15 hours for the files to output, I am greeted with the following message: "There was an error burning your disc.  Please check to see if your boot volume has sufficient space."  At that point I try reloading the disc and click "Try Again", but the same thing appears.  I know I have more than sufficient space on my hard drive, as well as on the bluray itself (the H.264 video file is only 26gb).  I also load the BD disc proir to starting the Share as I've been told that this is how the program knows you have a large enough disc capacity.
Here are the specs of what I'm using.  Perhaps they can offer some insight:
iMac Intel Core Duo with most recent Snow Leopard
Buffalo BRHC-6316 Bluray/HD DVD Combo Drive
Verbatim Dual Layer Recordable 50GB Disc (6x speed)
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

SHORT ANSWER: Try a different BRAND of BD-R. Worked for me!
LONG ANSWER: I wanted to be sure to post on this older thread because I just experienced this same error/problem burning blu ray out of FCP7 through the share function. I've been doing it successfully for years now, so when the "error" popped up (and kept popping up) I was surprised and dismayed. The GOOD NEWS is I found a solution. After trying the operation on several Macs (Mac Pro tower and a MacBook Pro), and after getting the error in both places, I was quickly of the mind that it couldn't be a boot memory issue. Neither of the Macs had any memory deficiencies. So, my next guess was it was the media itself. I purchased some Memorex single layer 25GB disks and... problem fixed. For your information, the disks that gave me the error were WINDATA BD-Rs (they don't say how many G they are) purchased at Micro Center. I will say they were cheap and the Memorex were not (so I suppose in this case it is true you get what you pay for). Hope this helps somebody!
