Recording to iDVD

I was wondering if I hook up my VCR to my G4 using the Mini-DVI-Video Adaptor, could I record my old VCR tapes to a DVD in the laptop?
Thanks

As a quick aside, if you got yourself some method of importing your video...
(this is something I first thought when I started using iLife, as well as most that I've talked too)
iDVD it meant only for taking video footage you already have on your hard drive (or created) and putting it in DVD format. iMovie, on the other hand, is your ticket. Importing directly into iMovie allows you to set chapter markers and edit what you're working on before putting it on to DVD.
So the workflow is more like this:
Source -> iMovie -> Edit in iMovie -> export to iDVD -> DVD Created, to Set-top box.
Or in slightly more techie language, it's not for creating content, it's for formatting content you've already got.

    Hi Jeff,
    welcome to the forums,
next time you post instead of using only generic words like "footage" just add specific information about this footage like codec, frame rate etc. also sequence settings (Hit Command+Zero).
So...by taking a shortcut through the wild forest of Guess-land I think you are dealing with a delivery (MPEG2 or 4, H.264, FLV or other) not an editing codec (i.e ProRes, DV...Or another one listed in EASY SEYUP).
It might be possible that you have only the audio to change in order to match FCP requirements and for this reason it is worth to mention that FCP likes AIFF, 48kHz, 16 bit (Again Hit Command+Zero to check). If your audio is not as I said above you need to convert it using QT or MPEGstreamclip or Compressor, whatever suits you best.
Replace then the offensive audio track and all the weird happenings should disappear.

  • Slideshow in iphoto not accurately recorded in idvd

when a completed slideshow, synchronized with a music playlist and created in iphoto 8 is sent to idvd to record, some of the transitions are changed and the music goes out of sync. Sometimes it doesn't. Why?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
When you send a slideshow to iDVD it is converted to a Quicktime Movie, and frankly, in iPhoto 08 and earlier sometimes that doesn’t always go as planned. I know of no fix for the issue. Workarounds include making the Slideshow in iMovie or an app like PhotoToMovie, or in iDVD itself.

  • IDVD will burn but will eject before burn ends

I used to use iDVD a lot few years ago to make home videos DVDs. That time, iDVD burned almost all DVDs, when it didn't burn my DVD I could put a new DVD on the driver and start all over again and would burn. That time I used those normal 4.7 GB DVDs. Now I went to buy those dual layer DVDs because I have a big project to record (3 dual layer DVDs). I put the DVD on the driver, put it to record on iDVD, wait about one hour and then it randomly eject the DVD and on the screen the DVD was still burning. I thought it was like those times take I would put a new DVD to the driver and start all over again and it would burn, but I tried three times now and lost three DVDs now and nothing seems to work. But I'm concerned about one thing. In May the computer broke, they had to replace all the keyboard and trackpad part and also said to me that the internal HD had a physical problem and if I didn't change that HD the computer would stop sometime. As i had spent much money on the keyboard/trackpad change I said that I didn't wanted to do that now. Until today it have been very nice with that supposed "broke" HD. It imported and exported about 14 videos big videos (20 minutes to 50 minutes), have done the time machine when I want, etc. I'm very desperate and have to record those DVDs until next week. Sorry for the long text.

    OK
So You made an .img file
Double click on it and You find a new Hard Disk alike icon containing two folders - VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS
Then in Your Program/Application folder You'll find DVD-player tool.
Run this and test the Virtual DVD (Hard Disk look alike icon)
    Then if all is OK
    Start - Disk Util tool
Then select the .img file (on left hand side)
Click on the BURN sign (Yellow/Black Circle)
When asked - Insert new DVD disk
    Now set DOWN BURN SPEED
    OK
Good Luck - Yours Bengt W

  • Recording both PAL and NTSC versions of same project

I am importing a series of movies to iMovie in PAL format. I understand that it automatically sets the format. What steps should I follow to ensure that I can have both versions of the same footage correctly (PAL and NTSC)? On my first attempt to record on iDVD I had not changed the setting to PAL (even though iMovie project is PAL). A warning message showed that there were conflicting formats but I recorded the DVD and now it works on my NTSC TV and DVD. Then I changed the iDVD setting to PAL and made another copy. When I check the DVD's under Window>Movie Info (Quicktime) they seem to be in the correct format. It happened by accident but I understand that you should export your movie from iMovie in the new converted format in order to record a DVD in such format. I accidentally bypassed that step and I wonder if the quality has been lowered. Has anyone experienced this also? Should I do the same to save me an extra step? Thanks for feedback on this.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The conversion from PAL to NTSC (or NTSC to PAL) is a non-trival task.
In the case of PAL to NTSC, not only must the frame size be changed from 720x576 pixels to 720x480 pixels (fairly easy resizing), but the frame rate must be changed from 25 frames/second to 29.97 frames/sec (this frame rate change is NOT easy). iDVD/QuickTime seem to simply duplicate an occasional frame to go from 25 to 29.97 fps (or delete an occasional frame going from 29.97 to 25 fps) - this technique can cause the converted movie to be rather jerky.
You will probably get a better conversion use JES Deinterlacer at http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html as mentioned by Bengt

  • Exporting Master File to iDVD - interlacing problem?

    Hi,
I am finally at the stage of exporting our school play recording to iDVD (is there a better alternative?). Anyway - I have read many posts on the matter here - and the consensus seems to be that I should export a Master File (this is a massive 52Gb). I have done this, using the default settings. The picture is clear - but fast movement causes a funny distortion - stripes almost. A friend who is versed in Handbreak told me that it was a interlacing issue. What should I do to combat this? Hope someone can help

    Hi,
Thanks for this. I have create an empty project which is 1080p. How do i safley move my finished 1080i project to the 1080p project. Apologies if this is a very basic question.

  • Export from iMovie to stand-alone DVD hard drive

I want to preserve camcorder home movies edited in iMovie. The DVD recorded from iDVD won't play on my existing DVD player. Could I use the hard drive of a stand-alone DVD recorder/player to import from iMovie? I don't currently own one.
iMacG5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Tapes from miniDv Canon Optura 60

A key consideration is the amount of free space on your boot hard drive. You will probably need a minimum of 15 to 20 GB to complete your project in iDVD. If you will have this amount of free space after copying over the files, go ahead.
BTW, if you plan on making several copies, make your first 'burn' to a disk image on your hard drive (it's an option under 'File' if I remember correctly).
Verify the disk image with Apple's DVD Player and then burn the copies you need with Apple's Disk Utility. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42724 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006

  • I live in Australia, should I use PAL or NTSC settings when creating my DVD?

I am new to creating DVDs and I am not sure what settings will give me the best quality when I burn it to DVD. I live in Australia, should I use PAL or NTSC settings? Any other hints?

    Hi
My best Guess is - PAL
Does Your electicity current use 50Hz or 60Hz
    Sweden 240V 50Hz - TV - 25 frames per sec = PAL
    USA 110V 60Hz - TV - 29,97 fps = NTSC
    AND
Then it comes to HOW the Video was recorded - AS iDVD does not convert in a very good way. I use JES_Deinterlacer to do this when I need to send a DVD to USA. and it's free on Internet and even very expencive converters doesn't do it any better.

  • Failure to share back to tape

I have just installed iMovie HD and find I cannot share my movie back to miniDV tape. It worked on iMovie 4. Both the screen on the computer and on the camera turn black and record only black on tape. I can record to iDVD.
Sometimes I get the message saying contact with the camcorder has been lost.
    Is this an iMovie problem?

    Hi Victor:
    Welcome to the forum!
    Look at these links:

    Sue
    Hi Sue,
My problem is in exporting to tape. Both the computer screen and the camcorder screen show black, like the 5 seconds never quits. The tape has black on it, too. I have looked at the export help, but it doesn't address this problem.
I can export older movies to the same tape and the same camera setup. (I changed cables, and think the lost connection problem is solved.)
I have spent a lot of time putting this movie together, and was able to put it on a DVD, but have never been able to back it up on tape. (It is 49 minutes long.)
What else can you suggest? The camcorder is in SP mode.

  • Can anyone explain me this problem

I have a superdrive that has been barely used and all of sudden I wanted to make a copy of a disk to disk one using a lacie external dvd drive and the other the superdrive, I have been getting some errors only using Dual Layer disk, now before I recorded perfectly fine with the same batch of dual layer disk, now when I want to record on iDVD a movie with the same batch of dual layer disk it would not complete the recording of the disk, by all means with the Lacie DVD recorder I have it works perfect why is that with the superdrive back then it worked fine now it does not, is this a mechanical or firmware problem should apple be on this case with their superdrive, I am using a MediaRange DVD+R DL disk and it works fine with the lacie but not with the superdrive still it use to work fine before but this was just right after using toast which now I am never going to use because I had the same experience with a Lacie DVD recorder I had before and it did the same until i had to repurchase another DVD recorder from Lacie.

yah my lacie works fine but I think the superdrive stop recognizing the media when we updated to the new OSX which is now 10.6.8 I think apple needs to update the superdrive firmware, because my lacie recorded two disk with out a hitch, and using iDVD but when I use the superdrive with the same media, it starts to record then it fails that means either something is not right with the firmware, or the DVD was damage with Toast, and this has not been the first time it has damage a DVD recorder. But the funny thing is that the superdrive records perfectly all the single layer disk with out a problem so I am guessing its a firmware or the drive is damage. The way it was damage well it has to do with toast and the mechanism getting stuck and thus damaging the recording head.
This could happen, and no I do not have applecare in Spain bad thing about this is either I have to drive to Barcelona or madrid with a 27 inch iMac and have them check it there. If they tell me that the drive was damage and need a new one I for sure would post on blogs for people not to support Roxio software, because the first time I had a drive that was damage by toast was with a DVD recorder 16x dual layer +and - DVD R and same thing only records single layer but dual layers of any kind would not record this was once with toast that just out of the blue was recording a dual layer disk gave me an error and you could hear the spindle spinning but the recorder was not recording and if you leave it after the error is closed out and the disk is spinning the head recorder would get damage.
I told roxio this problem and they said its not their problem, guess what its not going to be my problem anymore because I wish for more people to stop supporting their poorly made product.

  • DVD Burner not working in Mac Mini

My mac mini (running OSX 10.7.5) all of a sudden stopped burning/reading DVDs, however CD burning and reading still works.
I ran my system's disk utility and corrected some problems and tried again to no avail. I tried a previously burned DVD which did not work either. However, after trying several DVDs, I got the burner to work (or at least it appeared to as it went thru the usual messages of recording my iDVD movie, but when the recording message showed DONE, the screen appeared to freeze there (typically, at this point, I usually get a message that asks if I want to burn another) --I was able to hit cancel to exit the program. Anyways, the DVD did not burn. At this point on the plus side, I can now read my previously burned DVD... so I tried again to burn my iDVD Movie again but it just spits out after 15-30 seconds.
I saw on some boards that I should try cleaning the burner? Do I have to take my system apart to do this? Do I use a cleaning disk? If this is the case, will my DVD acknowledge it if it isn't working? Or do I just spray compressed air into its slot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is for a job that I need to get out.
    Thanks so much!

Yes use a CD/DVD cleaning disk

It could be that the burning laser died. Different lasers are used for CD and DVD burning

  • "out of disk space" error with Quicktime export

Hi - just trying to export a fairly small (3 minute) video sequence to record via iDVD. When I try to export the sequence as a Quicktime movie, I get an "out of disk space" error. I don't understand why - the video is not that big, and I have over 30 GB of free disk space. I suspect I'd be able to do it if I deselect the "self-contained" option - but I don't understand why 30 GB of disk space isn't enough.
    Other details: FC Express 3.0

Well, I thought everything had been rendered, but I'd missed a couple of transitions. When I tried to render those, I got another "out of memory" error. Turns out I'd misinterpreted what the "minimum scratch disk size" setting meant - it was set to 32000 MB - I thought that meant that 32 GB would be available for storage, but I guess it means that the 32 GB will NOT be available for storage.
Anyway, I changed that minimum to 10000 MB, and now everything works....
    Thanks!

  • PLEEEEEEASE HELP!!!!! Burning dvd problems

ok, i had the imac g4, and i was burning dvd's perfectly fine with it, using idvd. i'm using dvdxdv to transfer from my dvd recorder, put it in to imovie, then record off idvd. now my dvd's are incompatible with my dvd player.
do i need to use a different program to tranfer from dvd to my mac?
    what am i doing wrong?
    thanks

    Robert,
This really doesn't sound like an iDVD issue, but a disk burning issue. Don't be too surprised in going back to iDVD5 doesn't help.
Burning at a slower speed on other media is the first thing to try, along with a proper cleaning of your DVD burner.
But let's look at your image first. When you mount the image file and view it with the Apple DVD Player, does the video look good there? Or is it still jaggied?

  • DVD length

Ok, I'm ready to record my class reunion onto IDVD. I'm confused about the length of recordings that DVD's can handle. A single layer DVD+R can hold 2 hours. So I decided to divide my 2 hours and 34 minutes into 2 DVD's. Now as I'm reading more about DVD's, it looks like I could get my entire movie onto one double-layer DVD. Would this be a good idea? When I originally tried to record in IDVD, it said my original 155 minutes wouldn't fit even on a double-layer DVD, which was what I had it set for.
So what's the answer?? Or would two single layer DVD's be better? And what's the most efficient way to copy these DVD's to sell to classmates? I'd like to pass them off to someone else to copy.

    DVD's use MPEG-2 compression.
Compression is "variable" and adjusted by the encoding to "fit" a standard DVD media.
A "short" media source (say under an hour) will allow less compression than a 90 minute DVD. A two hour DVD is compressed to the "max" (to make it fit on the DVD media).
You may want to reconsider your goal. Not all DVD players can handle dual layer media. And, Blue Ray is right around the corner.
Your current plan is to break the 154 minutes into two DVD's. Better than using dual layer media (cheaper, too).
But you may get even better quality DVD's by breaking the source into three parts (52 minute "parts") because the compression schemes have more DVD "space" and the MPEG-2 file compression is even less than trying to fit on other media.
