Recording to MBP Firewire vs USB

I've seen discussions in favor using Firewire over USB 2.0 for recording with a laptop such as a Powerbook or Macbook Pro. However, I have a MOTU firewire interface and only 1 port. Can an external drive be daisy chained with an audio interface somehow or should I get a USB 2.0 drive for recording & storage? Is there another option I'm overlooking?
Even still, does the external drive need to be 7200rpm or would 5400rpm work as well?

The more GB you get the better.
Don't bother buying a USB hard drive, you have a good audio interface and a MBP don't do that to them, they will start complaining....:-)
As for what is a good deal...i will leave that to be answered by people in here that leave in your country.

  • Can I output sound from MBP via firewire or usb to DAC

I would like to output sound (iTunes) from my mid 2008 MBP to a digital to analog converter using either firewire or usb to play on my home stereo.
Is this possible and if so, could someone step me through how to accomplish this?
    Regards,
    Jim P.

This is posible, you need to do some reaearch to find out what will be the optimum converter that is compatible.  Off the the side of my head...I don't know. But it is doable.

  • Firewire and USB

In my process of researching to buy a new Intel Macbook I've discovered that there is only one firewire port, two USB 2.0 ports, and no pcmcia port.
Here's my problem. This laptop will replace my old powerbook that I use for recording audio. I need one bus for audio to enter the laptop and one bus to access my external hard drive to write the audio. I currently have a firewire bus card in the pcmcia slot and use the firewire port for the other bus on my powerbook. This optimizes the amount of data that Logic can process. My worries with the new macbook is that USB 2 is typically slower than firewire. So using the firewire and USB 2.0 ports may slow me down. I know the old powerbooks with USB 2.0 had issues with the USB 2.0 bus being really slow compared to PCs. Was this problem ever fixed? Does anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions? I know I could just buy a macbook pro, but I really didn't want to spend that much money.

Actually there's more than just another FW port. It's a FW800 port, ExpressCard/34 expansion slot, faster and better GPU with more VRAM, faster CPU, more RAM, bigger hard drive, and higher resolution screen.
You're buying a business computer. That means you are making an investment. You can write off the investment which reduces taxes. Doesn't it make better sense to be dollar wise rather than penny foolish? Over a three year write-off period you're bartering over $250 per year.
The MacBook has no expansion future whereas the MacBook Pro does.
However, this is ultimately your decision. All I wanted to do was point out the benefits of the MBP over the MB. I should probably stop here lest I sound like I'm making a sales pitch - which I'm not. I own a MacBook and two MBPs. I like them both.

  • Capturing Hi8: How do I do this if my camera has no Firewire or USB port?

  • Firewire to USB?

I probably already know the answer to this question but i would like to be sure.
I have an external firewire drive that i used in the past to make a bootable clone of my MacBook Pro, using SuperDuper. The MBP developed some serious problems so in early 09, i replaced it with a new MacBook (2.4Ghz). I didn't like the lack of firewire but i was really tired of struggling with the size of the MBP and wanted the cuddly quality and one handed convenience of a 12", like the good ol days of my powerbooks. Who knew Apple was going to come up with a 13" MBP?
So now, i need to have a bootable copy of my MBP. I have one on the firewire drive which i made before i got the MacBook. My question is, is there any way of being able to connect this drive to my MacBook through some kind of adapter or hub so that i can boot from the MBP clone?
Or, is the only way i can have a bootable back up of the MBP that i can use from my MacBook to do a new SuperDuper backup on a USB 2 external drive?
In other words, is my old backup/clone on the firewire drive completely useless as far as accessing it through my MacBook goes? (as i suspect). I searched this forum for the answer but most of what i found was about video transfer/editing. There was something about a hub, but it didn't make sense to me.

Thanks lyssa--that doesn't sound too difficult or expensive, putting the drive in a USB enclosure.
BTW, i have a couple of those external drives that are dual, both firewire and USB. So the bootable backup should work with either connection, right? that is, IF i had the back on it which i don't. But maybe there is some way to transfer the copy i have on one firewire connection drive onto the drive that has both? I don't suppose i could just drag the stuff from one drive to another while both are connected to the MBP? Is there any easy way to get the data wiht its bootability from one drive to another? Probably not, i know, but have to ask. thanks

  • Firewire and USB as a Power Source Problem

I understand that I should be able to power an external device using just the firewire or USB ports. However, I just bought a MacBookPro (I had a PowerBook G4 previously) and it appears that when I connect my Blackberry to my USB port it no longer gets fully charged. And now, I just connected my Firebox recording interface (with Firewire)and it only works with the external power supply attached (whereas it worked fine on my G4 with just the firewire cable). Has anyone else experienced something similar, or is there a problem with the PowerBook?

Okay I got it to power by HD but It still won't power my PreSonus FirePod. I've read some other post and it would appear that the FirePod is incompatible with the Mac Book Pro. How could this be? I thought Macs were the best? Somebody please help.

  • Automatic Bkup Failure--Firewire vs USB

I've been experiencing regular Timemachine backup failures to my WD 500 GB Firewire/USB external from my iMac G5. I've used the firewire connection, and since installation of Leopard 10.5.2, the auto TM backups clank after the first automatic backup completes, requiring (usually) a physical disconnect of the external HD, a power down of the external HD, and a reboot of the iMac G5. Manual backups worked normally...
My Powerbook backup system uses a USB connected external HD, and I haven't left it connected to do automatic backups. Tonight, as an experiment, I left the Powerbook connected to it's USB external HD for several hours, and discovered that auto backups worked perfectly.
So, for grins, I disconnected the firewire from my iMac and started using the USB connection, instead, for TM backups. To my surprise, the backups (auto and manual) have been working perfectly (no glitches showing up in Console).
Anyone else have this experience? Has a common thread been identified by Apple (or anyone out there) that can pin down the problem with Time Machine after about 10.5.2?
    Thoughts? Thanks!
    Bob

Well, after a few more automatic backups, TM is back to it's usual hijinks with auto-backups failing.
Once the backup fails the external hd won't unmount. After I force an unmount and try a disk repair I get the following messages on Console:
    /dev/rdisk1s3: (S,"Checking multi-linked files.",0)
    /dev/rdisk1s3: (E,"Incorrect number of file hard links",0)
    /dev/rdisk1s3: (S,"Checking Catalog hierarchy.",0)
    /dev/rdisk1s3: (E,"Invalid catalog record type",0)
    /dev/rdisk1s3: (S,"Volume check failed.",0)
A few repairs later, all's well (until the next automatic backup...).
So, it 'don't' matter if the hd is firewire or USB as you-all said...

  • Firewire or USB 2? Faster?

    Hey
Which will transfer songs faster? Firewire or USB 2?
    im using an iMac G5
    cheers

Curiosity led me to test this with both my PC and Mac last spring. It was actually started when one of my students bragged about how fast his USB 2 flash drive was. FireWire is rated at 400 Mbps while USB 2 is rated at 480 Mbps but this is only part of the picture because these are the theoretical peak speeds. Actual sustained transfer speeds are a good deal lower for USB than FireWire. Further, using the same USB 2 devices, Mac systems routinely see slower speeds than PC systems.
Bottom line: If you are transferring multiple GB of data when you sync, FireWire is going to be faster but if you routinely sync your iPod to change only a handful of CDs worth of music and to update playcounts, etc, USB 2 and FireWire differences are too close to call. At least on my G5 tower and PowerBook.

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Capture Question (Firewire to USB Converter)

Does Premiere Pro CS3 support capture through a Firewire to USB Converter?  More specifically, we have one particular PC laptop that does not have a firewire port, only USB 2.0.  So we were thinking of getting a firewire to USB converter.  Will that work for capturing footage from our Mini DV camera?
Camera is Canon XH-A1S HD and a firewire cable will be running from this camera to the firewire to USB converter, then a USB cable will be running out of the converter into the dual core laptop with Windows 7, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 460M video card.
    Thank you!

Might work then again it might not. Have not heared of any positive results. In other words imo its a waste of money.
You need a real firewire connection.

    tyler57,
it would be better to direct that question to Gary Loftis, since my MacBook Pro doesn’t have a Thunderbolt port.

  • Firewire to USB adapter?

I recently purchased a iMac 27 i5. Love it. But it has only USB and thunderbolt ports. My beloved Nikon 4000 film scanner only has firewire connectivity. I found a firewire to USB adapter online and purchased one. It came from China. When I plugged it into my self-powered USB hub, I got a message saying a USB device was drawing too much power and it shut down one or more other USB devices to protect the computer. I couldn't print. I realized the adapter might be the problem and when I disconnected it, my printer came back online.
Q1 -- has anybody found a firewire to USB adapter that works?
Q2 -- is there another workaround to connect firewire devices to the new iMacs?
Q3 -- is it possible to have a USB port put into the scanner hardware?
    George

Thanks, Niel. That makes sense ... should have thought of that ... assuming that will reduce the excessive power draw?  I see Apple sells the 400-800 cable.

  • I  want to record a keybord connected by usb in an IMac and only           sound like an ambient microphone. What is wrong?

I want to record a keyboard connected by usb port and only sound like an ambient microphone. What configuration is wrong? Thank you

The optimum choice is to format it ExFAT, but do so on the PC, not the Mac. Alternatively, you can make two partitions - one for the Mac; one for the PC. Partition the drive using GUID when you make the two partitions. Format one using Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Format the other on your PC using NTFS if you won't need to write to it from the OS X side or use ExFAT if you do.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) you will use for Windows from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to MSDOS.
    6. Click on the Erase button.
When you connect the drive to your PC reformat the PC volume to either NTFS or ExFAT.

  • Firewire to USB or Thunderbolt cable

Need to get an adapter to bring video from firewire to USB or thunderbolt.  Suggestions?

Apple has announced (on 6/11/12) a Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter for use on the Air, but it is not in the Apple Online Store as of yet. This would seem to be the most practical solution.

  • Is out there a firewire to usb adapter?

    Hello,
I am looking for a firewire to usb adapter, so I have a third usb port on my macbook pro late 2011. Does it excist?

Keep your eyes open for the Thunderbolt hubs and adapters that are starting to come out  Some of them have multiple jacks with USB 2, USB 3, Firewire, etc all sharing the Thunderbolt port.  Some even have internal disk drives and one has a Blu-ray DVD drive.  Some are kind of pricey, but gives you lots of options for connectivity.
