Recording TV Shows directly from cable...

With Windows Media Center, I was able to hook my cable up directly to my computer and record tv shows for later viewing. Am I able to do the same with Apple TV? Or does it only allow me to purchase tv shows?

Depends on what you mean by "used in conjunction with".

The ATV should play any mpeg4 content iTunes can load. it appears that the TubeStick can record a Mac and export in an ATV friendly format for later syncing.
I don't think it is possible to record directly to the ATV.

  • Recording tv shows from dvr to my pc

I have a brighthouse DVR and want to record some of the show's from it,I have a HP 9500y pc equiped with burnning/labaling abilty but no idea how to hook them together,or if it's even possible. any info would be great thanks

Couple of things to keep in mind here.
    1) Your PC does not have a BlueRay drive.   DVD native resolution is NTSC, ie: low def, not high def.  While
software exists to convert you lose resolution and the show is going to look terrible.
    2) Your brighthouse DVR I suspect is the one supplied by your cable TV provider, brighthouse?
If that is the case then almost certainly it is not going to have any way for the typical consumer to
make archival copies of TV shows because they want you to fill up your DVR so you have to delete
your old TV shows and get more from them (and continue to pay them, of course)
If you really want to record TV shows off brighthouse cable then this is what your going to have to do:
    1) Scrap your DVR
    2) Buy a PC that has Windows 7 on it.
    3) Buy a TV tuner card (There's an inexpensive USB one for about $50 that works great)
    4) If you subscribe to premium cable (ie: encrypted TV) then you will have to buy a
TV tuner card for the PC that has the slot in it for the cable-company supplied decryption
card.  Once you get it working with unencrypted cable you call the cable company to
come out and plug in the decryption card.
    5) Download a number of free conversion and video editing programs.  Project X is one of
the best free ones out there.
    6) Record your TV show then convert it from the .ts file to a AVI file using a codec of your
choice.  Popular ones are MPEG4, DiVX, etc.    This will not only shrink it down but it
will put it in a format that allows you to edit it to crop out the commercials.
    7) Buy more hard drives.  You will quickly find it much cheaper to create a library of
external USB hard drives (1-2 terabyte jobs) then to try to burn shows to optical media.
Have you priced blank bluray media lately?  Not to mention the burners.
You need Win 7 because earlier versions of windows do not allow TV tuners to decode the
Cable TV standard off the cable line (at least, not for the cheap tuner cards, the expensive
ones contain software that will do it)
Keep in mind I do not have brighthouse, I looked at their website but I decided not to
waste a lot of time on it since it's not clear what exactly kind of content provider they are.
If they are not a cable provider but instead your getting stuff over the Internet from them
to your DVR, then a TV tuner card isn't going to do much good of course.  If that is the
case then short of taking apart the DVR and taking the hard disk out and sticking it
in a PC to get the raw files off the DVR, your pretty much screwed.

  • Do thumbnails show in Bridge CS5 if connected directly from a DSLR (via USB cable)?

I have a D90 and none of my thumbnails for my files show in Bridge CS5 when connected directly from the camera. This includes ALL types of files (JPEG, NEF, etc). It shows the thumbnails when I use a card reader though. Is this common with DSLRs?

If you have—misguidedly and unfortunately—done that already, first back up the image files on your computer, then immediately format the card in the camera, which will erase everything in the card and format it to a fresh, pristine state.
What ever possessed you to do a thing like that?
Had you done that to the card containing the raw files you can't open?
Do not be fooled by what the camera shows you anyway. The preview you see in the back of the camera when chimping* is not a preview of your raw file at all, but of the embedded JPEG that the camera creates right after you shoot and records inside your raw file.  The histogram it shows you in the camera is not based on the raw data at all either, but on said embedded JPEG.
The same is true when you review or playback the images later on the LCD display in the back of the camera.
*Chimping is a colloquial term used in digital photography to describe the habit of checking every photo on the camera display (LCD) immediately after capture.
The phrase is most likely derived from comparison between the sounds and actions some make while reviewing images and those of an excited primate (Oooh! Oooh! Aaah!), or when a photographer is completely absorbed in the act of analyzing, admiring or proudly displaying a shot to others.

  • Recording a show after it starts.. you only get a recording from that spot...not the beginning

(as it says on page 19 of User Guide)
I fear I have made a major mistake switching from Direct TV... this feature worked flawlessly on their DVR (to which I had a 1TB external drive attached) .     I may eat the $400 termination fee and go back..  I think a week on FIOS is about all I can stan.

Your 100% correct, Direct TV can only record the entire live program if you were already tuned to it, not if you just change to it. I never said that Direct TV could do that and Direct TV never says or implies that either.  Verizon on the other hand explains it this way...verbatim from page 19 of the Verizon FiOS user guide:
"HERES HOW TO RECORD LIVE TV
To record a show that's currently playing:
o Press the REC button on the remote
Got to the show late? No Problem: If you start recording after the show has started, the DVR will actually record the show from the beginning. So you'll have it all.
To schedule recording of an upcoming program........"
The limitation with Direct TV is obviously because it automatically is buffering channel feed, usually as long as the last couple of hours.... you can even go back and record the previous show if its in that window.  By a sat feed.
Verizon has a fat fiber-optic cable pipe plugged into my house carrying internet, phone and tv with room to spare. Sadly,  I am not the genius you obviously are, Mr. Faraday,  so I'm not certain that Verizon doesn't do something like buffer this stuff on their end and then push it down the pipe to me if I want to see it from the beginning.   Would be an easy qualification in the manual don't ya think? You know ".....Got to the show late? No Problem, as long as you are have been tuned that channel....... "
Oh wait... this is the same company who matter-of-factly told me caller id would work on my tv, all I had to do was enable it.    Kewl.. I enabled it.   Nuthin.  Called support. Told me it takes 24-48 hours to kick-in.  No prob.  I can wait. Couple days later.. still nothing, called support back.  This time got someone who knew something and they informed me that you need Verizon's Call Assistant and Visual Mailbox for on-screen caller id to work.  Evidently only Verizon, well at least some in Verizon, know  this little tidbit.  (as I'm certain you do as well, von Goethe) Dummy Me, I didn't know that.  Gosh.. maybe a couple lines in a manual or on screen....you know for us nitwits.... would that kill them?
So you are correct, Mr. Wittgenstein, I am a **bleep**. I'm a Verizon customer aren't I?

  • Save TV Shows From Cable Box?

this is kinda random but I have a cable box from Verizon and on the back it has a usb port, I was wondering if I could connect it to my external hard drive and record tv shows. does anyone know if this is possible at all or if I daisy chain my my cable box, hard drive, and macbook, would I be able to control the cable box somehow with the macbook and then record to the hard drive?
even if theres some software I could download that would allow me to use just this equipment whether its for Mac or XP?
this would really great to be able to do

You said cable box, not DVR. So are you trying to record live television or transfer recordings from a DVR. If you want to transfer recordings...good luck, unless you have firewire on your box you will probably have a useless USB port. It might as well say service port. If you do connect to it there's always the slimmest chance it will show up as mass storage.
Now, if you want to timeshift television there are a ton of products to help you do that. Try: http://www.miglia.com/ and http://www.elgato.com/ . If you need to decode the cable (it's digital, but not Clear QAM) then you need to use the RCA or S-video outputs from your box to connect to any adapter/breakout box you choose. Controlling the box would then be done with a time. I don't know what you would do for an IR blaster to control it with your Mac, but there may be an available product and it's theoretically possible that you could do so with the built-in IR port.
    Good Luck,
    -j

Update:  I was able to have the correct photo show in my email as received on my iPad2 by changing a setting on my IMac prior to sending the photo on the email.
On the iMac, I went into iPhoto > Preferences > Email photos using > Mail (in lieu of "iPhoto").  This seems to have corrected the issue.  I'm not sure why.  Now the correct photo shows up when received on my iPad2.

  • Recording sound directly from the web?

I have Adobe Soundbooth CS3, and I'm trying to find a way to record a sound directly (on the wire) from a web page. I've been unable to do this, being relegated to the built-in microphone.

  • Recording direct from PC, Xtreme Gamer

Hi all, I know this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find it in a forum search, so I don't mind a link to a previous answer to this, and that is; how do I record directly from the PC and not the microphone. I am using Jing Pro to record the video and I would like to submit a song with it on You Tube that comes direct from my PC for cleaner sound. I have the Sound Blaster X-fi Extreme Gamer? with driver version 2.20.65
My PC specs are Windows 7 64-bit and I am using Logitech G5 5. sound system.
    Thanks for your help

I managed to solve the problem But I don't rly know why it's working for me now:S Because I reinstalled the newest drivers for couple times and it's worked at least... I read somewhere that this card doesn't work fine at Windows 7 x86/x64 Ultimate (best of 7th version is propably Professional), I have both on student license, but I was too lazy to reinstall the systemD

  • Recording audio directly from YouTube?

    I'm curious here:
Working on a film.  Producer wants to do some sequence tests.  Producer wants to use, for the tests, a particular Vivaldi piece from YouTube.  I can easily buy other versions of that same music from iTunes, but he wants to use THAT version.  This is a test.  The film is well financed and he plans to pay for a license for the music if it works for him, once the film is edited.
I'm trying to think of a way I could 'rip' the audio from the YouTube piece (directly from YouTube) for this test, using Logic perhaps?  I don't want to record it off my speakers.
Is there a way to record something like that internally in the computer ... or feeding it out and back in through a simple M-Audio Fasttrack Pro?  Hate to display obvious ignorance here ... but would love to know if, and how, one might do this?
    Ben

    Hi Jim,
Most perfect.  What a lovely device.  Thrilled I am.  Works like a dream.  I'll buy a license.
    Very much appreciated, thank you,
    Ben
