Recording using an audio interface or audio cable?

Hi everyone,
I am a newbie with Garageband and home recording in general and I just wanted some advice about the best way to record songs I have written on my Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer onto Garageband 09.
So far I have been using a basic audio cable which is connected to my apple Imac from my Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer to copy the songs I have written on my Korg Triton Extreme synthesizer to Garageband and it sounds ok but I just wondered whether I should buy an audio interface and connect that to my Korg Triton Extreme synthersizer and my apple imac and Garageband and whether this would give me a significantly better quality recording of each song?
All advice is welcome.
Many thanks.

You can record audio with a cheap cable for a few bucks or use an Audio Interface worth a couple of thousand bucks.
Do you get a better quality for you money ... definately yes.
Do you hear the difference ... it depends
At the end, it comes down to your needs.
In your case, you use a synthesizer that outputs line level. If you setup your level correctly (sending and receiving), then you might be ok and maybe not hear a difference with an expesive device. Even if you would hear a better sound in an A/B comparison, at the end it comes down to the following question: If you could hear only one solution (cheap or expensive) and you can't hear if it was recorded with the cheap or the expensive equipment then it doesn't matter.
At the end, your money might be better spent on better speakers (that let you judge what you hear) or thrid party plugins that give you more production value.
Recording a guitar signal or microphone - that is a completely different story.
Hope that helps

  • Noise coming through Firewire audio interface (M-Audio Firewire 410)

I have an Intel 20 inch Core Duo iMac with an M-Audio Firewire 410 audio interface attached to the 800 Firewire port. The Firewire 410 seems to be working fine. However, I have a very annoying problem with noise. A fairly loud hum is coming through.
I'm pretty sure the noise is originating in the iMac. If I press on the LCD monitor or squeeze the case around the middle of the iMac, the hum diminishes. Sometimes when I do this, the hum diminishes but a buzz then becomes audible.
The iMac and the Firewire 410 are plugged into the same outlet.
I have a friend with the same setup who claims his is dead quiet. Does anyone here know what could be causing this and how I can fix it?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Any more news on this? I have the exact same problem, and the problem exists with a couple of firewire devices. I'm currently using a Behringer F202 (or something similar), but I had the same problem with a Firewire 410. I'm running Leopard, but I know the problem isn't related to the OS.
See - I have my FW interface hooked up to an external mixer - when I plug it into my iMac, I get the noise..this happens EVEN IF MY iMAC IS SHUTDOWN. I've tried using the external power supply for my Audio Interface, as well as running off of bus power to no avail. It is definitely a problem with the iMac itself.
I've ordered a FW Hub, and I'm going to try using the audio device through that next. I don't want to do this, but I also have a USB Audio device that I use for other things, and I found that it behaved much better when connected to a hub vs the the USB port on the back of the iMac directly. It seems obvious to me that the iMac has some weird power-shielding problem or something of that nature, so pulling it off to the hub which has its own power supply will hopefully help.
I do have AppleCare protection, so, my next step is to call them out.

  • I have a G5 power PC dual 2ghz  10.5.8 and my recording interface stopped outputting. I used 2 different interfaces and changed cables, neither solved my problem. With everything plugged up i can hear playback through the internal speaker.

I have tried System preferences, input and output. I have tried the midi controls in utilities. With everything hooked up correctly I cannot get the interface to playback through the box or record now. When i hit play I can hear the playback coming through the internal speaker on the tower. The interface previously worked fine, bought a second one and it is doing the same thing. Must be a system issue. Please help!

  • I have a very high pitched constant sound coming through my monitors when my iMac 2013 is plugs into my audio interface (Komplete Audio 6) this doesn't happen with when using the same set up but with my macbook powering the interface

Hi i was wondering if anyone could help me out with regards to this high pitched noise- i am assuming its coming from the imac as when i swap that with my laptop in the exact same setup all high pitched noises are gone.
Any help would be greatfully appreciated its actually driving me a bit mad now

  • Two audio interfaces but different uses in one system

    Hi,
I have already got an audio interface for recording and run smoothly.
Recently I get another audio interface (M-Audio Firewire 410). I want to add it to my system as a standalone mixer in which the outputs will be connected to 2 another active monitors, the inputs of this "mixer" are connected to audio outputs of a DVD player.
So, I can control the DVD volume by the knob on the Firewire 410 and by the M-Audio software in my Mac but my original audio set up doesn't change.
I mean, the DVD audio signal pass to the Firewire 410 then output to the newly added monitors only,my original monitors will not be affected (no DVD sound).
At the same, if I play mp3 in i-tunes, the music will output to my original monitors only.
Just like two independent audio set up in one system, is it possible ?
Thanks for any help in advance.
    Cheers,
    edtayin

You need to give complete details of the audio, exactly what is it, how many tracks, what's the channel configuration?
Can you post screen shots of what you're doing and what happens?
In expanding audio components in the timeline I can see what looks like an extra audio clip married to this one on a different track which has no signal, but I can't delete that additional audio clip.
Let's see this and the channel configuration in the audio inspector.

  • Can anyone help!! with Edirol FA 66 Audio interface and Logic Pro 7

    Hi I really need help!!
I have Logic Pro 7 and just have brough tnew Audio interface. I have connected it up via Firewire and my Mac has recognised drivers for interface.
I am plugging midi keyboard up to interface using two midi cables but cant get input signal through logic
    PLease help someone!!

I have connected my Keyboard to my Edirol FA 66 Audio Interface
    via midi cables
Ok, so you should be able to use the Casio to play Logic's instruments.
I would like keyboard to play into Logic and then be heard as an
    output through my external speakers.
Well that's your problem, you've only connected it via MIDI cables - MIDI IS NOT AUDIO.
MIDI does not carry any audio signals at all, you cannot record audio via MIDI cables. You need to connect the stereo outputs of your keyboard into the audio inputs of your audio interface in order to record the Casio as audio, and/or to pipe it's audio through Logic.

  • Problems with USB Audio Interface

My Behringer mixing board came with a USB Interface so I can out put the audio from the board into my laptop via USB. The trick is though Logic recognizes it and I can record say microphone audio from the board on Logic, I cannot hear the tracks that already on Logic. For instance, say I want to record a vocal track onto something I have created on Logic. Logic will let me record the microphone vocal but it won't allow me to hear the track, rendering it useless. It is a very simple USB interface and I have been thinking of upgrading but I am wondering if it something I am doing wrong on Logic. Any thoughts?
    Ken

when you select , lets say the USB device in your audio preferences, it will be used as the input and output device. You can use the USB interface's audio outs plugged into your mixer, and use speakers or the headphone jack. When you create an aggregate device, using the USB device and your built in audio, and choose it in your audio preferences, this allows you to use the inputs and outputs of both the USB interface and your built in audio from your mac. So now you can record from one device while listening back on another. meaning you can record the audio from the USB device and listen back using your Mac speakers or from headphones plugged into your mac.
if you get a better audio interface, one with mic inputs, you will still need to connect it to speakers or plug in headphones to it to hear audio. If you have the budget, a dedicated firewire audio interface will usually give better results, in audio quality, than a behringer mixer and a usb interface.

  • USB Audio Interface with bad latency problems under bootcamp

    Hi everyone,
I am currently running an Edirol UA-25 USB audio interface under Mac OS X for my normal music-listening needs. Everything works fine, and there is next to no latency when messing around in Garageband .
However, when I switch into bootcamp to use Cubase SX 3 for audio production and sequencing (has all my windows-only VST instruments), the interface pops and crackles extremely. It's almost as if the USB interface is losing sync..?
When I turn the buffer up on the drivers, this stops, but it is annoying as I like to have low latency when recording for direct monitoring.
Can anyone give me any insight into why this might be happening?
I know this is an audiophile-type question, but I thought I might as well give it a go. Or heck, if you wanna direct me somewhere where they might be able to help me!
    Cheers!

  • Mainstage not working with audio interface

    Hi,
I'm having problems in using Mainstage with my audio interface, a Tascam US-600.
Mainstage does not receive any input signals when I connect a microphone or a guitar into the Tascam and use it with Mainstage. I selected the audio interface as audio input and tried with all the inputs (from 1 to 6) that the channel strip let me select. For the audio output, when I select the built-in output I can not hear nothing; when I select the Tascam outputs, I can hear just the NON-PROCESSED sounds.
I don't know what to do, because I realized these other facts:
         - Mainstage works with a MIDI device directly connected to the Mac with a MIDI-USB cable;
         - The Tascam, as written above, receive the input signals. Using it with GarageBand it gives me no problems, with the same instruments (both                microphones, guitars and the audio interface) and connections!
         - Also if it gives me problems with feedbacks and noises, the built-in microphone seems to work with Mainstage - at least MS recognise input signals.
Thanks in advance for your answers and sorry for my English if it's not so smooth.

  • Update of 10.4.9 not compatable with audio interface

the update of 10.4.9 from 10.4.8 made my audio interface (m-audio 410 firewire) undetectable. is it a good idea to reistall the original software into my macbook? how does this effect my software (logic pro 7, iomega harddrive)? should i remove my software first?
    any recommendations greatly appreciated

After going through this another hour I was able to get it to the login screen and now my websites are back up. At this point I am afraid to fully login.
What worked, not sure if it had anything to do with it was I was able to hold down option and then select the second drive. It then either rebooted like it was supposed to or it did the same thing and died and reboot, hard to tell actually.
Is there cases of the drive volumes getting changed or something like this? I was counting the last 10 restarts, between 5 and 15 seconds before it rebooted. Usually it didn't seem like it had any time for the OS booting to get started.
please help if you have seen this if there is anything I should do?
For the time being while it is up, I am going to update my new server, my second server and set it up.
    thanks.

  • Using a camcorder to record video and an interface to capture the audio

Here is what I am trying to do:
Use my camcorder to record the video and use a mic connected to an audio interface to record the audio portion of the video.
Here is how my set up looks like:
I have an M-Audio firewire audio interface connected to my MacBook Pro. I have a mic connected to the interface, and I have a firewire cable connecting the camcorder to the interface.
I am able to make this work using iSight but not with the camcorder.
Recording with the camcorder works fine but the mic connected to the interface will not work. I can only hear the mic connected to the camcorder itself.
    Any suggestions?

... hmm, probably beyond the concept of this nice consumer app...?
iM is meant to work with miniDV camcorders.. all audio+video come via that single firewire "line"...
I've heard about an "internal software router", which claims to route different sound inputs to diff. apps...
it's free, so give it a try: Soundflower

  • For guitar, vocals, keyboard/drumpad controller, what is the best audio interface to use/record quality sound in Logic, Mainstage, Garageband, etc. (lowbudget)?

So many to choose from. im really just trying to record clean sounding electric guitar tracks now vocals in the future and keyboard/drumpad controller near future..(irrelevant but thought i should mention im in the market for a keyboard and drumpad controller combo hopefully will be usb or something) but i need a quality audio interface to use with Logic Pro 9 and all the stuff that comes with it (mainstage, etc) and also Garageband. I have heard so many different reviews about this or that but all in all i dont think i can afford an apogee except maybe the apogee One but it at 249 or whatever i feel like i could get alot more bang for my buck. Ive heard alot of good things about m-audio gear but i heard mixed reviews as well. If someone can just tell me what is the best interface in the 100-200$ range for the needs ive listed above...Any responses or advice greatly apprecitated.
    Thanks

    hi mm
there are so many different sound cards out there these days it seems - ill just say that one that i got alot of use out of was the tascam 122 (http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-122.html)
it has 2 decent phantom powered XLR inputs, some midi stuff, a place to plug a guitar into and some nice big knobs.
the next level would be something with more ins (8 or 10) and probably firewire, and also around $400 i think.
oh, and your computer should be more than sufficient to handle what you want to do.

The basic answer is that Apple has not programmed the capture routine with this capability. As such, you can always send QT feedback requesting this feature be added as a future enhancement.

  • What recording audio interface to use with iMac G5 1.9 1GB

    Hi,
I need an audio (USB or Firewire) interface to start using my new iMac in my home studio. That's why I ordered my G5 17 inch 1.9 Ghz with 1GB of RAM.
There are many on the market like Digidesign's Mbox 2, Motu traveler etc., but what can I expect from my G5 performance-wise? If it's limited to two simultaneous tracks because the hard drive can only cope with that, I don't want to spend a lot on an audio interface that supports a lot more.
I'm sure there are lots of mac users out there who record music.
My goal is primarly home studio use, but if I can track my band with four microphones in the practicing room, that would be nice, but not essential.
But minimally I need to record two or three simultaneous signals while playing back up to four/five already recorded tracks.
I would appreciate any tips (as well as on the software, Garageband is too limited already after a couple of weeks of use to get used to my new Mac, which by the way is great).
    THANKS!!!

Since it appears you need multitrack recording capabilities, I suggest searching for that kind of software on:
    http://guide.apple.com/
    http://www.versiontracker.com/
    http://www.macupdate.com/
You might also want to check the various Pro and Applications software Apple makes to see if it does what you need:
