Recording Vocals 10.0.3 - Missing Live Performance Feature?!

Hey Guys,
I bought a new MacBook Pro, trying to record vocals on the updated version of GarageBand and the sound quality is less than ideal.
I used to use (LIVE PERFORMANCE) Vocal feature on version 6.0.5 which sounded great. Now with this update it has less then relevant options for a person trying to record demos and audition pieces...
Options like "Bright Vocal" or "Natural Vocal" sound poor next to backing tracks and live instruments.
Does anyone know of a recording setting on the latest version that mimics the 'Live Performance' setting of the old version... or maybe just a good setting in general for recording vocals in the latest version.... Kinda annoyed.

Make a backup, before you start to modify the Instrument library. You will need to move system files around.
All instruments are stored in the Instrument library - search for a folder "Library" at the top-level of your Macintosh HD.
/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/
Your "Live Performance" should be here:
/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Real/Vocals/
Or
Copy all files over to the corresponding folder on your new mac, that are missing on the new Mac.
You may also want to transfer the old loops from /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/
Then restart the mac.
In your hidden User Library are corresponding folders.
~/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Real/Vocals/
That is where your custom instruments will be saved.
After restarting your Mac and opening GarageBand again you need to reindex the loops, if you installed the old loops as well. At the top of the Lopp browser is a pop-up menu to select a loop library. At the bottom of the panel you can select to rebuild the Loop Index.

Yes, the app has a feature to playback the concert. I missed London Grammar and Imagine Dragons, but watched Coldplay. They were really excellent. Do love Apple for bringing this to us.

  • Recording vocals, vocal pres

alright this is for people who are experienced or no what they are doing when using Creative soundblaster x-fi platinum soundcards. I have several concrens one such as when i record vocal tracks ( singing and screaming) using defualt sound options from the concole launcher the playback quality is really bad screams just sound like crackling and singing has a lot more bass and less high than how it actually sounds in real life.
the soundcard is not the problem for the most part tho, i beli've a lot higher vocal quality can be achieved if i changed the setting in the creative console laucher. This is where you viewers who know how to use this can come in handy. If you know some settings and presets you have made when recording vocals and works almost how the sound is naturally without recording i would be happy to know. Also if there is a site or page that has presets you can download for free then please give me some information on that also. If you have any other ideas that could help out at all thanks.

There a quite a few parameters you can adjust including reverb, compression, eq etc. Each of these features is almost infinitely adjustable. You can add echoes, and even pitch control to take care of those off key notes. Of course, using the proper microphone and placement of same is critical. I use both a Shure Beta 58A dynamic mic (for live gigs and also for some recording). When I want a really clean sound I use a Shure condenser mic (KSM27) for vocals. It takes some getting used to and experimentation but the vocals I get are really pretty good (even though I do perform and write and I am not a great singer). Another technique that really helps to fatten the vocals is to record on several tracks. Record the vocal on one track and then duplicate it to a second track. That's one trick that most pros use and it does work. You can add pitch control to one track and leave the other dry to get some pretty cool effects. Usually I wind up with about three vocal tracks and anywhere from two to four instruments. Record the vocals dry (no effects) and then play around with all the effects available in GB and you may be quite surprised at the improvements you can make. Of course, if you are just not a good singer or are using poor mics don't expect much. Good luck and don't give up. Experiment and have fun and you may be quite surprised.

  • Using Garageband for live performances

I would love to hear from anyone who uses GB for live performances. I'm especially interested in how you store and play your music; ie direct from your computer drive, on flash card or thumb drive etc. I'm a one man show with guitar, flute, and keyboard. I'm really new at this and any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey Gillermo... I might have to eat my words. I had a good think about this last night and I have come up with a plan. Just shooting from the hip and so might need some refinement, but here goes...
The problem as I saw it with Garageband was two fold...
    1. how to lay out several songs or groups of pre recorded tracks and tracks with effects on them for my vocal and guitar and
    2. lack of an easy to use controller of some sort that worked with GB to minimize mouse use, speed up transfer/choosing between songs and organize my set layout with a structure of some sort.
As a result of mucking around with my Korg NanoKontrol and using the plugin for GarageBand, I can now envision a logical system for using GB for Live performance as a one person show.
The NanoK has the ability to control 8 tracks at a time. You have use of Volume, Pan, Mute, Solo as well as the transport buttons when using scene number 1 on the NK. It has the ability to scroll through groups of 8 tracks at a time with dedicated buttons on fader bank 9.
As a simple example, lets take 4 tracks 1. a track dedicated to vocal with some effects on it to taste 2. a track dedicated to guitar with some effects to taste 3. prerecorded bass track (file bounced down to mp3 or similar) and 4. a drum/percussion track set up like track 3.
Now what you have is the use of 4 tracks for your performance ( there are a few other options though). Now if you load tracks 5-6 with the bass and drums of another song and 7-8 with the tracks of yet another song you now have 3 songs you can play/sing from the first fader bank set. These are all visible on the laptop screen.
Now thinking in groups of 8 tracks, the 2nd set of 8 tracks (tracks 9-16) is set up in a similar way with tracks 9-10 duplicates of 1-2 (vox & guitar) and 3 sets of bass and drums (or what ever). You would name each set of bass and drum tracks with the name of the song so you could always find out where you are. You could also apply instrument icons for easier identification.
So starting with fader bank 1 and tracks 1-4 un muted, you would have muted all the other tracks in the entire set ( before you started your show obviously). Hit play, sing your song... hit stop. Hit rewind, mute tracks 3-4, un mute tracks 5-6, hit play when ready and away you go with song No.2. Repeat for song 3. Once you have completed these 3 songs and made sure all of the tracks are muted via the Nano, press the button that moves the controls to the next set of 8 tracks or 3 songs.
Now in terms of performance there would be some trial and error needed to find out how big the project file could be before there were computer performance issues. I read somewhere there was an upper limit of approx 240 tracks in GB. In reality you would be thinking in terms of how many songs there are in your sets. So in this scenario if you had 15 songs in each set you would only need 40 tracks or 5 sets of 8 fader banks.
To minimize performance issues with projects getting on the large side, in between your sets you could close the project with set one in it and open the project file with set 2 in it.
A couple of other layout options would be to use an entire bank of faders for each song. You could have between 5-8 tracks usable per song. You could have a combination of audio, .wav/mp3, electric guitar and software instrument tracks. Simply go through the mute/unmute process as you scroll through your songs.
You could also lock/unlock the odd track for another level of performance optimization, but you would have to use the mouse pad for this as it can't be done via the NK.
The pro's for this type of system are
    1. Complete control of mixing vol & pan for the venue you are in
    2. Very simple control at your finger tips, 2 or more faders at a time, limited mouse use
    3. A logical frame work to create your sets.
    4. You can stay in GarageBand, no need for another software program.
    5. Very cheap investment.
The Con's would all revolve around your computer spec's.
    1. Max out your RAM.
    2. Be selective with effects
    3. System HD speed.
Note, I am assuming my vox and guitar are going through and audio interface with outs to an amp or PA of some sort.
I am going to have to try this out. I really DO NOT LIKE Ableton Live. It is heavy on CPU and gets really deep very quickly. If this works then I will have an Live Serial# for sale.

  • Edit Pre-recorded vocals

I have been trying to work out how to edit pre-recorded vocals using the Voicelive 2 and Logic Pro. I have managed to figure out the settings on the voice live 2 but I cannot work out what to do on the logic side of things. This is what I have been told (see below), but I dont understand what this means.
In LOGIC you have to set up a SEND (to VoiceLive 2 via MAUDIO SPDIF out LEFT!!! CHANNEL ONLY) for sending the dry Vocal track and RETURN the processed signal on a new stereo track (from VoiceLive Rack / input source = MAUDIO SPDIF input L & R channels). Don't forget to record enable the track. To control harmony / detecting automatically the key, you may SEND any audio signal (i.e. your instrumental, piano/ rhodes chord track etc.) via MAUDIO SPDIF RIGHT!!! CHANNEL to VL 2.
Would anyone be kind enough to explain what this means and what I need to do? ( i am trying to post edit pre-recorded vocals using voice live 2, logic 9 and m-audio fast track ultra).
    Thank you

Open GB, drag the AIFF file from the Finder onto the GB window
    Hey presto!

FCP X?  Then you need to use a different forum...This is the FCP 7 and earlier forum:

FCP 7?  Did it look like it captured normally? Everything go smoothly?  Stop normal?  Did an error occur at any point?  Can you open the file in QT?
In the future...do not rely on ONLY FCP for this task. Get a reputable recorder that can record to ProRes. AJA KiPro, KiPro Mini, Atmos Ninja, Decklink Recorder...lots of options.

  • Logic & Live Performance

    Hey Guys,
So i work and compose electronic beats & tracks in logic and have for some time. I just recently started working with a vocalist & drummer who are playing live to my tracks. I want to know from all of you what is the most effective way of doing this? I recently had a rhrsl and bought a usb to xlr connector to plug into the pa to play my logic track along with the drums and vocals, but the connector didn't work. I guess i just want to know how to utilize the pre made track with the live performance as best i can. Let me know if you want more info!
    thanks again,
    appreciate any suggestions!

    1. First you'll need an Audio Interface that has at least 3 outputs. 2nd you'll need to put a click track on a seperate channel for the drummer, and send it to her/him on a seperate output. So basically the music goes on track #1, and send it to the stereo output (outputs # 1 & #2), and then the Click track goes on Track #2, and send it out to another output, like let's say output #3.
    2. You can also use iTunes and make the track stereo with the music on the left channel and the click on the right channel. Then send the left channel (Music) to the P.A. System in Mono, and the right channel (Click) the Drummer on a deticated output.
Note: You can use logic to make your tracks, and then bring your tracks into Sonar (PC only). Sonar has a song list feature like no other. Logic does not have any way to play different Projects/Songs on the fly. Below are some other alternatives that may work well for you.

  • Shall I buy a 3D television for live performances???

Couple of day back I got an idea to buy a 3d TV for watching live performances; at times its bit hard to book the tickets on time and hence, we missed out many of the live concert due to the unavailability of tickets. In near future we are planning to join few of the concerts listed below:
    1. GMA concert series.
    2. 2012 Toyota concert series
How many of you would advise me to buy 3D TV for doing the same? I thought as per the advertising statements if we bought any good 3d TV we could feel our programs as real, isn’t?

    harold_odalis wrote:
I prefer my LG passive 3d TV for watching sports as live and you want it for live concerts then again it’s a similar thought like mine. Take some demos of LG LM series TV. They offer exceedingly bright PQ with high refresh rate with almost negligible input lag. These models have sound zooming feature too which will make you feel your concerts as good as live, you would feel like as if a singer is performing right in front of you. I have experienced LGs sound zooming feature and it was breathtaking!
Has LG fixed the color accuracy issues on their LM series yet? The OOTB presets on this series are way off.  Both the 7600 and the 9600 seem to have the same problem:

Let's not even get into the wishy washy blacks and the lovely halo effect on the 9600 caused by the low number of LED in the back.

  • Need to transform CC7 to CC11 in live performance

I need to Transform CC7 messages to CC11 in live performance of organ plug-ins.
My MIDI controller has a single CC Pedal jack, labeled Volume, to which I have a CC pedal connected. It indeed controls the volume of my plug-ins.
I need to build a Transformer to change CC7 volume messages into CC11 expression; but have been unsucessful.
Can anyone explain the steps in doing this?
    Thanks,
    William

The easiest way to do this is to open the Environment and find your way the the "Clicks and Ports" layer. From here you should at least have a Physical Input Object (Logic's way of saying "Communicate with the driver for this MDI interface") and a Sequencer Input (an extra step that makes the end user tell Logic "Hey, I want you to record all incoming MIDI data"), something most other pieces of software do automatically.
Now, create a new Transformer object and cable it between the Physical Input and the Sequnecer Input.
The routing will look like this: Physical In -> Transformer -> Sequencer In. In this example we will be destructively changing ALL CC#7 messages into CC#11 which will then be sent into the Sequencer where they can be recorded if you so choose.
Double click on the Transformer Object and make the following settings. In the Top Row of the Transformer set the Status field to "Control", leave the Channel Field on "All", and change the -1- Field to 7. What you have done is told the Transformer to look for incoming messages that are Controller #7 on any MIDI channel. Now we need to tell it what to do with these messages.
In the Bottom Row you can leave the Status as Thru (this will cause the output message to be the same status as the input. In our case "Control"). Again, leave the Channel Field as "Thru" but change the -1- Field to 11.
This will cause the Transformer to take any incoming CC#7 message on any MIDI channel and convert it to CC#11.
    Hope this helps.

  • Recording Vocals in Logic 8

I am using my Digi003 to record vocals. I have my MIC (SM57) in input 2 of the digi. WHen I create a new audio track and set it to input 2 nothing happens. I have tried to change mics and cables and nothing works. Is there a trick. I should be able to hit record and should hear sound right?
    So frustrating!

Did you select the device in the audio preferences of Logic?
Did you arm the track to record before hitting record?
Not sure if you've done either of these things as you didn't mention them in your post.
    Good Luck!

  • Can you set up a template for live performance in GarageBand for iPad Air?

II'm trying to set up a template for live performance using GarageBand on my iPad Air. Can anyone advise? Thanks.

QuickTime is AppleScript aware and has its own "dictionary". Many scripts and droplets have already been compiled and you can download them from this link:
    http://www.apple.com/applescript/quicktime/
Some need further editing to update them to version 7 features but it's not difficult using the Script Editor app.
Tiger's new Automator app could also be used but its feature set is rather basic. Newer actions are available for download from the Mac OSX Downloads page.

  • Recording vocals seperate from main music Mac

I do most of my music on a Mac Pro, running Logic Studio 9, but the location of the computer really isn't a suitable space for recording vocals in.
I can't keep lugging the Mac Pro about, so ideally I'd like to record the vocals in a suitable (different) space on to a laptop, then import the resulting audio files to the main project on my Mac Pro.
The idea is that I'd do a stereo reference mix of the music in Logic Pro, bounce it and copy that audio file to a project on the laptop (using Garageband or Logic Express to save cost).
With that project set up at the same tempo and sampling rate, I'd then record the vocals using the laptop. From there I'd copy the vocal audio file(s) and drop them into the music project on the Mac Pro, where I'd add any effects, processing and do the final mix.
First question - would this work? As long as I recorded the vocals in a project set to the same tempo and sampling rate as the music, would I have any timing or sync problems when adding the vocal audio files to the original music project?
Second question - if so, can anyone recommend any portable, Firewire 800 audio interfaces which would be suitable for recording the vocals on to the laptop? It would ony need to be 2 input channels maximum, but with at least one XLR input and phantom power.
    Any advice gratefully received!

but the location of the computer really isn't a suitable space for recording vocals in.
Is there any other room that would work better at your location? If so, consider buying a snake.
The idea is that I'd do a stereo reference mix of the music in Logic Pro, bounce it and copy that audio file to a project on the laptop (using Garageband or Logic Express to save cost).
Or reinstall Logic Pro on your laptop, but without all the content. Your license permits this, as you're not using two copies at the same time.
First question - would this work?
Yes. I do this often. Just be sure that both files begin at 1 1 1 1. Additionally, as I usually have many takes tracking o'dubs, I always record to WAV (BWF) files so I can use the 'move to original record position' command to align less than complete audio files.
Second question - if so, can anyone recommend any portable, Firewire 800 audio interfaces
Most FW interfaces are FW400. Just get an [adapter.|http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html] and buy an interface which can be separately powered. There are dozens of suitable FW interfaces: one inexpensive box which I like is the [AudioFire4|http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/AudioFire4/index.php] which is 6in/6out - they make an Audiofire2 but that doesn't have XLRs. Apogee, Focusrite, Presonus etc. all have small interfaces which you might like - just [search around|http://www.sweetwater.com/c683--FireWireAudioInterfaces/low2high]. Personally, I would avoid M-Audio.
    Good luck.

  • Monitor my voice my while recording vocals?

I have icore5,8gb ram and my Rode nta1 mic which is pluged into profire610 that goes to my pc with 6pin buswire and headphones comes out from my pc realtak jack. Now the problem is that I can't monitor my voice while recording vocals.I have done Edit>Pre>Audio Hardware and set the device class to ASIO and device it shows M-Audio ProFire ASIO.and select Release ASIO driver in background. It records everything and play. But while im recording I can't hear my voice in headphones.Still if I choose MME from Audio Hardware and go to Multitrack window click R and "I" then I can hear everything in headphones but then again I can't record using MME.Please help me out im going crazy here

Is there any reason not to just use one of the two headphone jacks on the front of the Profire 610?  That's what they're there for.
Trying to use the in built Realtek piece of rubbish at the same time as the Profire is frought with difficulties since the Profire works best with ASIO drivers whereas the Realtek is an MME device.  Even if you could get it working, I suspect that latency might make the monitoring less than ideal.
Edited to add:  you MIGHT be able to get it working the way you want if you download ASIO4ALL from http://www.asio4all.com/
I have no way of trying this and still think using the Profire headphone outs would be a far better solution...but if you have to use the Realtek for some reason, give ASIO4ALL a try.

  • Question regarding recording vocals?

Hi, I'm considering in purchasing an IMAC real soon. Will Garage Band allow me to record vocals while playing an mp3, wave, cd, etc, from an internal player within the mac? For instance, I currently have a WINDOWS PC which I use winamp to play the audio and use CoolEditPro to record that same audio as well as vocals simultaneously. Will I be able to do this using Garageband and an internal audio player which comes with mac?

  • Recording vocals

    I have an:
    -8800 shure stage mic.
    -M-Audio Ozone.
    -DX4 Audiophile studio monitors.
    -G4 mini mac (256 RAM).
Does anyone have tips on how I should set up to record vocals over Garageband music tracks I've made?

you might run into some problems with the RAM, 256 might not really be enough to run garage band quickly and without bugs with alot of real music tracks. However, with regards recording technique, set up the M-audio with he mic plugged in, and then get a pair of headphones. I dont know if your M-audio has a built in monitor or not, so plug the head phones in either through the M-audio or right into the back of the mini. Press record and lay down the vocals to the playback from the already created music tracks.
