Recording vocals seperate from main music Mac

I do most of my music on a Mac Pro, running Logic Studio 9, but the location of the computer really isn't a suitable space for recording vocals in.
I can't keep lugging the Mac Pro about, so ideally I'd like to record the vocals in a suitable (different) space on to a laptop, then import the resulting audio files to the main project on my Mac Pro.
The idea is that I'd do a stereo reference mix of the music in Logic Pro, bounce it and copy that audio file to a project on the laptop (using Garageband or Logic Express to save cost).
With that project set up at the same tempo and sampling rate, I'd then record the vocals using the laptop. From there I'd copy the vocal audio file(s) and drop them into the music project on the Mac Pro, where I'd add any effects, processing and do the final mix.
First question - would this work? As long as I recorded the vocals in a project set to the same tempo and sampling rate as the music, would I have any timing or sync problems when adding the vocal audio files to the original music project?
Second question - if so, can anyone recommend any portable, Firewire 800 audio interfaces which would be suitable for recording the vocals on to the laptop? It would ony need to be 2 input channels maximum, but with at least one XLR input and phantom power.
Any advice gratefully received!

Is there any other room that would work better at your location? If so, consider buying a snake.

Or reinstall Logic Pro on your laptop, but without all the content. Your license permits this, as you're not using two copies at the same time.
First question - would this work?
Yes. I do this often. Just be sure that both files begin at 1 1 1 1. Additionally, as I usually have many takes tracking o'dubs, I always record to WAV (BWF) files so I can use the 'move to original record position' command to align less than complete audio files.

Most FW interfaces are FW400. Just get an [adapter.|http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html] and buy an interface which can be separately powered. There are dozens of suitable FW interfaces: one inexpensive box which I like is the [AudioFire4|http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/AudioFire4/index.php] which is 6in/6out - they make an Audiofire2 but that doesn't have XLRs. Apogee, Focusrite, Presonus etc. all have small interfaces which you might like - just [search around|http://www.sweetwater.com/c683--FireWireAudioInterfaces/low2high]. Personally, I would avoid M-Audio.
Good luck.

  • How do I record vocals with an existing music soundtrack?

I have been asked to sing for a funeral tomorrow. It's my grandfather's funeral and it's just not possible emotionally for me to get through it. I am attempting to use a music soundtrack which I've purchased to record the song and vocals in GarageBand. For some reason the vocals don't record with the music and vice versa. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated. The service is tomorrow.

Check, if you have set any effects on your Master Track (Track menu > Show Master Track. Then click the Smart Controls icon. )
I started my sample project from an empty project to avoid any presets.
Check, if selecting a "Voice" patch for your vocal track will help.  Select the track, then open the Library and try the different "Voice" patches. Perhaps "Classical Vocal" will sound good for the occasion.

    Thank you.

As i browsed thru the net...that is all i get...JavaSound cant work on MAC.So now i am doing using QuickTime Java. But i get an error when i run the applet...java.lang.SecurityExecption: Only able to capture media with security settings when class is signed.

  • Recording  radio  programme  from  video  to  mac  to  dvd/cd

Hi-I have just aquired 66 and a half hours of the late great UK DJ John Peel radio show. They are all on video with just the sound.I would like to record them into the mac and then transfer this onto CD or DVD if I can.I have Sound Studio installed and have managed to record some Lp's and transfer them onto CD.So maybe i could use that-although i saw in a magazine recently that you can use Garage Band to record stuff on (although i have not bought the magazine yet).My geuss is that i would have to record them into/as MP3-which would mean i could get more onto CD or DVD.Does anyone have any pointers about the easiest way i could do this and if i would get 66 and a half hours onto one CD or DVD ? As I have never attempted to do this before. (or how many Cd's or DVD's it would take to store 66 and a half hours ?).Any tips please would be much appreciated
    thanks

ps- i have been told that the recordings are of high quality mostly-so any pointers about the quality of recording i would need to make it do it in for the quality to remain high ?
pss-i do not yet have a device to connect my video recorder to the computer-but my geuss is i would be able to connect it via the sound output plugs-if their are any on the video recorder ?

  • Really confused on how to record vocals over music, how can I?

Hello. I currently have the adobe audition trial it just says Adobe CC. First off I know this isn't part of my question but is CC good enough or should I look into another verision: I am trying to make songs.
I upgraded from audacity and am confused on the simplest thing. In audacity I was able to record through my mic and while recording listen to my music in the back, with my headphones and record like that. In Adobe Audition it seems I cannot record unless my input and output are my mic, which confuses me too ( im a begginer), The only way I can record is if my mic is my input and out put so I can't hear anything I record or any music I put on there.
I can hear the music if I switch my output to my headphones but then I can't record.. I am just so confused I just want to be able to listen to the music through my headphones and record with my mic but I can't record unless my output is my mic. One thing I read was to try with multitrack, but when I open a multitrack session the recording symbol fades and I cannot click it to record.

To expand a bit on what Steve says...
Yes, Audition is completely up to what you want to do and, because it's professional software, a ton more.  The trouble is, this makes the learning curve much steeper than simple (but far more limiting) programmes.  Just to give an example, on my own set up I can record 32 simultaneous sources (in multitrack) and set up multiple different feeds to monitor.  With this versatility comes complexity though and I strongly suggest you spend a few hours with some of they tutorial videos available by searching.
To give you a quick overview of what you need to do to get started:
Go to File/New/Multitrack Session, set it up for the bit depth and sample rate you want, stereo or mono (likely stereo) and all that sort of thing, then give it a name.
Go to Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware and tell Auditon to use your mic as the default input (you may need to go to your Windows Audio control and set it up there if you mic doesn't show up on the Audition list).  Then set up the default output to be your computer speakers or headphone output.
On the multitrack screen, pick the track you want to record into (I'll assume you already have a music track that you've opened in a track) and make sure the input source is your mic--input is that box with the right-facing arrow in the area to the left of each track.
Click on the red "R" at the left end of the track to enable recording--just in the track(s) you want to record to, not the ones with existing material).  If you want to hear your voice via the computer, click the small "I" next to the "R".  This routes your input back to the output but, as Steve says, your computer might introduce latency.
At that point clicking on the red record button in the main transport controls should start you recording with playback going to your computer output.
Now, that's the basics but you have a ton of options (and a ton of shortcut keys if you choose to learn them).  Why so complex for a single track?  Simply, if you have the external gear to record multiple tracks at once then you need to be able to tell Audition which source to put in which track.  Once you get going, you can create a "session template" if you want to use the same set up every time.
So...give that a try but I strongly suggest you watch some tutorials for more detail--and I'll second Steve's comment that, whatever DAW you eventually decide on, a priority purchase should be an external sound interface to bypass the one built into your computer.

  • Cannot record vocal from interface  help!

Im using logic pro 8 on an imac 2.66 ghz dual core with a m audio pro fire 610.. for some reason im not getting signal from the pro fire into the logic record enabled channel. it shows up strong in the mixer section of the pro fire but nothing on the logic screen.  I did upgrade to snow leopard before i have done and vocal work but the main thing is that it looks strong at the outputs of the pro fire.
I'm using a Nady vacuum mic with it's own transformer and a M audio pre amp before it gets into the pro fire and again everything looks good coming out of the pro fire.
I'm creating the track as an audio track. The pro fire is configured in the audio preferences of logic as required.
    I'm stumped!!

my m audio tampa pre amp has a very nice compressor set up so i go from there into the line in's of the pro fire and as i said the signal shows up just fine on the pro fire mixer software, but i agree with you, i must not have the right input selected on logic.
    Here's what I do:
I hit the + sign which creates a new track
I choose it to be an audio trac in mono
i've record enabled it as well as monitor enabled it
I  click the red R on the track and click the round record button in the transport
all i get is a flat line in the region when recording.
I've done all this on my existing project as well as creating a new project just with vocals
    but still nothing.
I really believe it has to do with logic... I'm stumped, I've recorded vocals so many times this way but now nothing
    I appreciate all suggestions.  thanks,

  • I am trying to transfer my itunes library from my old Mac to my new Mac; however, all that transfers is the music I downloaded from itunes.  It does not transfer the music I downloaded from my cd's.

How do I transfer my itunes library from my old Mac to my new Mac?  When I try all that transfers is what I downloaded from Itunes.  It does not transfer the music I downloaded from my cd's/.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
2011 Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information, particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick  solution above. Unfortunately it uses the single term "transferring library" for two very different moves; relocating just your media (not recommended unless you really need this configuration) and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • Transfering music from pc to mac using iPod as a hard disk drive

I just got MacBook Pro and iPod which I have formatted for a mac, however, I want to get the songs from my IBM thinkpad to my mac. I transfered a bunch of them with a friends external hard drive, but forgot about all my purchused songs from the music store. I am pretty sure there is a way to use the iPod as a hard disk drive but everytime i attach it to my thinkpad it asks if I want to format the iPod and then won't transfer. So I guess my question is can I do this and if I can do I have to format it to windows and then transfer the files to the iPod and will I be able to put the files from my thinkpad to my mac?
    thanks!!!

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. You can reformat your iPod on Windows if you want to use it on both platforms as Macs can read Windows formatting, then you could enable it for disk use on the PC: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

  • After getting a new dell laptop, I was able to easily move my itunes library from my old mac to my new laptop, however now when I try to sync my music to my iphone,my songs have an exclimation point next to it and cant sync most of my music. HELP!

I recently was given a new dells windows 7 laptop. I then was able to successfully move my itunes library from my old mac to my new dell. Now I am trying to sync my whole library of music back onto my iphone 4, but when I try it says most of my music can not be located. I have exclimation points next to the majority of my music (I have 368 songs in my itunes acount). Please help me be able to sync my songs to my iphone. I am only able to sync about 31 of my songs.

Copy them from your old computer, or your backuo copy of your old computer. to your new one.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  the exception is itunes purchases.

  • I have a new iMac - how do file share my music and photos from my old mac to my new mac?

I want to transfer my music and photos from one Mac to another - but I don't want to transfer anything else - what is the best way to do this?
    Thanks

the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from /users//music on the source to /users//music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
do the same with your iPhoto library. see this support article for more information (except, you won't have to option-launch iPhoto)

  • How do I transfer music and photos from my Power Mac G5 to my new iMac. Have an old FireWire but it does not fit the new iMac

I am trying to transfer photos, music, etc from my Power Mac G5 to my new iMac. The Power Mac is too old for the migration assistant to help. I have an old Firewire but it does not fit the new iMac. Any suggestions? If a Firewire is the best option which one do I need? Thanks.

You need a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter or cable or a external USB 2/3 drive (self powered) it can default to the old USB the G5 uses 1 or 2.
    Format the drive info here.

  • My entire music purchase has vanished, bar one , from my new mac. I have searched via finder/music/library etc and it aint there. It still is on my phone and ipad though

All my purchased music has vanished from my new mac. it was there before, it still is on my phone etc?

    Hello Fin Hall,
Congratulations on your new Mac!  I am sure you definitely want your music available on it.  I found an article with steps to get your music back on your Mac:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
I would recommend following the steps under "Apps, Books, Music, Movies, or TV shows on a computer."  I hope this helps get you back on track!
    Best,

  • Switching from PC to Mac Itunes purchased music

Having recently made the move from pc to mac I backed up all my music on my old pc and transferred it onto my mac. All the music shows up on Itunes but when I downloaded it onto my 5G ipod the music purchased from Istore will not download??? any clues would be appreciated!!

Play one of the songs purchased from the iTunes store while connected to the Internet; this will authorize the Mac to play the music and enable its transfer to the iPod from the iMac.

How do I record music from a music cd to my MacBook Pro?  Up until this morning I would get a pop up window that asked if I wanted to play or record the disc I just put in.  That screen no longer appears - a disk starts to play.  I can stop the auto play but how do I add the music to my existing music collection?

Do you mean "how do you rip a CD to iTunes?" If so, just insert the CD into the optical drive of the MBP, launch iTunes, edit the ID3 tags to show what you want, then click the "import" button in the lower right corner of the window.
