Recording vocals, vocal pres

alright this is for people who are experienced or no what they are doing when using Creative soundblaster x-fi platinum soundcards. I have several concrens one such as when i record vocal tracks ( singing and screaming) using defualt sound options from the concole launcher the playback quality is really bad screams just sound like crackling and singing has a lot more bass and less high than how it actually sounds in real life.
the soundcard is not the problem for the most part tho, i beli've a lot higher vocal quality can be achieved if i changed the setting in the creative console laucher. This is where you viewers who know how to use this can come in handy. If you know some settings and presets you have made when recording vocals and works almost how the sound is naturally without recording i would be happy to know. Also if there is a site or page that has presets you can download for free then please give me some information on that also. If you have any other ideas that could help out at all thanks.

There a quite a few parameters you can adjust including reverb, compression, eq etc. Each of these features is almost infinitely adjustable. You can add echoes, and even pitch control to take care of those off key notes. Of course, using the proper microphone and placement of same is critical. I use both a Shure Beta 58A dynamic mic (for live gigs and also for some recording). When I want a really clean sound I use a Shure condenser mic (KSM27) for vocals. It takes some getting used to and experimentation but the vocals I get are really pretty good (even though I do perform and write and I am not a great singer). Another technique that really helps to fatten the vocals is to record on several tracks. Record the vocal on one track and then duplicate it to a second track. That's one trick that most pros use and it does work. You can add pitch control to one track and leave the other dry to get some pretty cool effects. Usually I wind up with about three vocal tracks and anywhere from two to four instruments. Record the vocals dry (no effects) and then play around with all the effects available in GB and you may be quite surprised at the improvements you can make. Of course, if you are just not a good singer or are using poor mics don't expect much. Good luck and don't give up. Experiment and have fun and you may be quite surprised.

guess what it says java file. So yes i'm sure. Sarcasm. Not the best way to encourage a total stranger to help you. Then there's
Sorry if i wasn't more clear but was that response needed? No it wasn't needed, but I'm not the one asking for help so I have the luxury of not worrying too much about it. It's extremely frustrating trying to drag relevant information out of someone, and makes one less inclined to bother.
Anyways, there's still nothing in this thread that actually explicitly says "there is a file called VolcanoApp.java in the directory where I'm running javac from" and I really can't be bothered banging my head against the wall any longer. You've made a silly mistake, or a false assumption. We all do it from time to time. My advice is, take a break, go for a walk and re-visit this in a while. You'll probably spot the mistake right away.

  • After using the loop to re-record, all vocal gone  ?

    Hi there,
    Something terrible happen to me.
I was recording a vocal of my friend singing. After, we play back, he requested for one short section to be re-recorded as he was choking.
So, I click on the loop button on the bottom, I define the loop areas (length & location) with a yellow rectangle.
But my friend cannot get the timing right because the loop section was quite short & we happen to re-record that section many times as the CTI keeps repeating that yellow section which I defined earlier.
But to my horrow, what happen after that was the whole track becomes a purple colour with a horizontal line instead of a wave-like graph. When I playback, there is no sound, how come ? What happened ? How come other areas other that the loop section are also affected ? I clearly saw the CTI only moves from the beginning of the yellow section to the end of the yellow section & then back to the beginning of the yellow section. So what happened ?
I also notices that there is a number "8" inside a yellow circle appeared on the extreme top right of the track.
What actually happened ? And how to I undo the action. I tried Control-Z but it doesn't undo anything ...
    HELP HELP HELP ...
    Thanks

Actually what happened is you were using the multi-take function - it recors a new version every time the region repeats. So you have done 8 versions, often the last one shows a flat line, but the others are still there: click on the number, you can listen to all of them, and finally you can pick the one you like best and discard the others. Then the number will disappear, and it's an ordinary region.
Nothing outside the yellow area should be affected by this technique.
Thanks Chris, will try that when I get home. But I have saved the file, will the original version & all the 8 version be still there ?
P.S.: One day you'll tell me why you call the playhead "CTI".
Oooops .... I am used to the Final Cut forum where the playhead is usually termed as CURRENT TIME INDICATOR, thus the short-form CTI. I forget 2 things, one is that I am in garangeband forum & two I forget the simpler word "playhead" as I am too used to calling in CTI. My apologies ...

Check the output settings in GarageBand's preferences > Audio/Midi pane.
And in the System Preferences > Sound  panel.
Also check the settings in Audio Midi Setup Utility.

  • Recording Good Vocals in GB?

Hi guys, quick question...I have a couple of good mics and having trouble getting good vocals in GB. When I hear profession recordings they have a lot of vocal depth...kind of like the sound when you are singing in a bathroom.
But I cannot get the same effect in GB? Do I need a mixer to separate the voice from my acoustic guitar so I can "fiddle" with the voice? If so what would be a good mixer?
    Thanks in advance!
    Chris

Hi Chris. The best way to do post recording processing of your vocals is to record them separately. This will ensure that you have just the vocals to work with and no guitar 'bleeding' into the vocal track. This can sometimes be a frustrating process for a guitarist/singer who is used to holding/playing an instrument while singing. Depending on your equipment, you may be able to get away with not using a mixer or audio interface as you will be recording only 1 track at a time. (A list of your gear and description of how you use it would be very helpful).
Once you have tracked your guitar and vocals separately, you can then add some effects. With a basic guitar & vocal project you can typically do 1 of two things. With the 'Master Track' tab highlighted you can add some of the Reverb effect to the whole project. Reverb is the effect that will give you the sense you are sing "in a bathroom" or a larger room. Experiment with the amount.
The other option is to selectively add reverb to you individual tracks. This allows you to set differing amounts for the vocals vs the guitar. Presumably you have used the "Real Instrument' option to record your vocals. With that tab selected (next to the Master Track tab) and the actual track channel you used to record your vocals highlighted/chosen, chose the edit tab in the info pane. At the bottom you will see a Reverb option/slider. Alternatively if you have a third party reverb AU you can click an empty slot and load it for use on the track.
    Hope that helps.

    Hello Everyone;

    Hello,

Try muting the track that you are recording onto I think.

Does your sound card have a headphone output? If it does connect a female single to double jac adapter so you can attach 2 pairs of headphones.

  • Recording audio (vocals and acoustic guitar) on logic for youtube.

hey guys, im looking to post some videos on youtube, but instead of just simple playing into a camera, i want the audio to be recorded into my mic.
an example of what i'd like to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieu3jSr_CDA
then i can input the audio into the video.
how do i play my guitar live with my vocals though?
    please help me !!!

    The poor man's way:
    1. get your mic and guitar plugged into separate channel strips in Logic (I think the guy in the YouTube video had a pickup in his acoustic, and was running that into his DAW, and the vocal mic was a separate track
    2. have your camera set up and ready to go, and Logic ready to record the vocal and guitar
    3. start record on video and Logic
    4. clap your hands a few times before starting your song .... helps for syncing up later
    5. mix down and bounce your logic audio to a stereo file
    6. in iMovie (or the like), with your video track open and in place, import your audio track
    7. manually "slide" your logic audio back and forth in time until it syncs with your video
    8. post online and wait for MTV calls

  • Cannot record any vocals

I have beats with a built in mic and I cannot get garage band to record any vocals. I have tried going to preferences and changing the audio input to built in input but still no luck. I even went back and tried to record with just the built in mic on my mac book and it still didn't work. I tested my mic using the text dictation, so I know my mic is working just fine. Anyone have a solution?

When I push record it just records silence. I read that there should be bars on the track that let you know when it is picking up any sound, and they are not showing that any sound is being received. I am not recording any instruments, just vocals.
Have you checked the system Preferences Audio pane? Is the input level set to a high value, and do you see any signal there?
If you have "Ambient Noise reduction" enabled, turn it off for a test.

The one posted in this topic is evem more unhelpful than some of my curt replies.
Bad idea, most of Logic's problems are not covered by support articles.

  • Recording live vocals using loopback

I would like to record live vocals through mainstage2 using the loopback plugin. Hoping to record multiple loops to play around with layering vocals and harmonies. Is this possible? I'm a brand new mainstage user and have no idea how to do this. If this is at all possible, can someone give me the step-by-step process on how to set this up?

Firstly, I have no ideal whether you want to perform a live broadcast. If so, you may not need to save the content as a file, but you will need a rebroadcast server.
Ok, for your encoding problem, if you are using JMF to implement your application, please notice that JMF does support a limited set of AVI payload/encodings. If the encoding doesn't match with the playing client, then obviously it can't be played. Try go to JMF page to see the supported encodings you can choose.

  • Recorded new vocal into "varispeeded" project; get rid of artifacts?

    Hi,
    Original bpm: 120.
All tracks recorded in MIDI except my vocals.
Bump bpm to 125 with varispeed.
    I like this tempo.
Now, I record vocals with varispeed ON. They sound "warbley" and watery. I guess this was a big oops.
Is there any way to get rid of the artifacts? It seems like with varispeed on, new audio actually gets recorded at the old speed, and is then sped up.
I turned varispeed off and brought the whole project up to my new tempo of 125. I ticked the follow playback on all the audio tracks.
Do I have to rerecord the vocals, or is there a way to salvage them (like changing a playback property for just that track (like changing the algorithm for just that track). The audio track does "follow tempo" when I tick the box in the Inspector, but it's just that the algorithm is not transparent enough to be used on an upfront main vocal.

Did you resolve the issue of varispeed not working properly. I.e. when returning back to normal tempo the recprding track is at the normal tempo and correct pitch?

  • Equipment for recording guitar/vocal/bass into Garageband

    Hi Everyone!
I really want to get into recording in Garageband and need some opinions on some gear to get.
I would like to record an acoustic guitar, some vocals and possible an electric bass guitar.
What do i need inbetween the instruments & my mac?
I am guessing I will need a USB device that takes Balanced XLR in (for the mic), standard guitar jack (whats the proper name for one of these???).
At least I would just like to record the acoustic guitar, a crappy microphone (unbalanced over mini jack) and the bass guitar
    Thanks!
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
I was in the same situation 2 months ago and I finally bought the M-Audio Firewire 410 recording interface. Wow. You have four inputs (2 XLR, 2 jacks) and 10 outputs. It's perfect for home recording. Electric and accoustic guitars, vocals, basses, or any instruments you like, this machine will do the job. The quality is impressive for the price (between 300 and 400 canadian $). I would say to you to purchase a firewire interface instead of a USB one, because with firewire you wont have latency problems and the overall quality will mainly be better than USB (larger amount of information passing throught the wire).
    Hope it will help you

  • Why the saving and all these machinations when i record a vocal

i took an older song from gb 09 put it into 11
    i have vocal track
i am editing it adding new vocal
everytime i record a little snippet of vocal it starts saving or the blue line fills up
i do not have star pressed on the groove tk
    or its own tk
why cant i be left alone while recording
why is it always interrupting and quantizing by itself
dont yell at me explain what to do about it please

Go to Preferences/Audio   Make sure the "Recording Delay" setting is at 0 <zero>  samples.
Did you change this? The default is 0 others have reported this being randomly reset.
It's actually a long standing bug and shows how easily Logic's display of a waveform does not necessarily mirror the audio, the waveform should be present no matter what the Recording Delay setting.
