Recording voice over doesn't give "red light" feedback

In the documentation it says that when a voice over recording begins "A pulsing red light in the upper-left corner of the screen indicates that recording is in progress."
I see the red like graphic and what looks like an audio meter, but they are static--they don't blink or change or anything. So I don't get a visual feedback that it is actually recording or if my audio level is right.
I just installed iWork 09 this week and it seems to be the same results on the 3 different Macs I use around here.
Is this a feature in 09 or did I miss some setting someplace?

Yes, I've proven it is a bug with external sound cards/mixers. I switched to the internal audio on my MacBook Pro and the meter worked fine. I did report it, but who knows if or when it'll be corrected. Perhaps they have an issue with external devices that self-regulate the audio levels?

  • I use Garageband 09 to record voice overs via podcasting, female narrator noisy, but keep getting an intermittent clicking sound. It's not the metronome. I have a good quality external USB mic plugged in. Any ideas?

I use GarageBand 09 to record voice overs via the Podcasting then Female Narrator Noisy utility. I have a good quality external mic plugged in. I keep getting an intermittent clicking sound on the audio track. It's not the metronome as that is turned off. I have to edit out the clicking after recording. I can see the spikes on the waveline. Any ideas how I can prevent this happening?

Hi again and thanks so much for replying.
The 'mic jack' on the old mic is both wide and large, measuring about an inch and a quarter from the base (where it comes out of the black encasing) to the edge of the tip (sort of cone shaped). As I can't plug this in directly to any port in the back of the Mac, I thought it might be possible to to buy some sort of adapter so that I could plug in the jack at one end, with a USB connector at the other end to go straight into the Mac. But I see from your comment that you are suggesting a smaller jack itself (i.e., large size jack to small size jack and then plug in to the small round port, instead of jack to USB port)?
At the Mac shop I bought a USB adapter to connect up a second monitor (screen). I've just dug out the package and it's called a mini display port to VGA adapter. But back to the mic issue, I don't want to use the old mic really, I'm just trying to eliminate whether or not my usual mic, or its USB cable, is at fault and causing the clicking.
I looked on Amazon for a suitable adapter but there was mention of these little gadgets having a sound card. As the Mac obviously has its own internal sound card, I couldn't see the point of another (exernal) one, unless it was actually required to convert the sound from input to output (playback) or something. One review said sound quality was lost but the person had a problem with his speakers, not a ticking sound while playing back recordings - which is obviously my problem.
I do have a headset that I used to use for Skype. It has a pink and a green jack. I could plug one into the "headphones symbol' port and try recording again with Garageband. At least the jack is the right size. Again, this is just for the purpose of eliminating whether my good mic on a stand with the anti-popping sheild is at fault.
While my Mac does have both inbuilt speakers (I don't need external ones) and an inbuilt microphone, the latter is not of a high enough quality for voice overs, hence buying an external mic etc. But whatever is causing the clicking or ticking is obviously affecting the quality of my recordings. As you can imagine, it is very time-consuming to edit out the ticking spikes and if the noise appears during speech, you can't edit it out at all.
Please keep the suggestions coming. I am determined to get to the bottom of this for my sake and everyone else who is suffering from the same problem!

  • How Do I Add A Pre-recorded Voice Over to an iMovie Project?

I have an audio file with the voice over I want to add to my movie project (which has an insturmental music track I want to duck during the voice over). How can I add this pre-recorded voice over track to my project?

You can drag in the voiceover file and drop it on top of the clip where you want it to start. It does not have to be perfectly placed, because you can fine tune it later by dragging.
I would suggest putting your voiceover file in iTunes and dragging in from the music browser, but it also works to drag in from the Finder. If you drag in from the Finder, you must take care not to move it later, or the iMovie Project will not be able to find it.

  • Record voice over in 10.2.

How do I record voice over in iMovie 10.0.5? I cannot find the microphone icon!

Do you have an iPhone? IF so, use the Voice Memo app which comes default with all iPhones and record the narration. Tip: make multiple attempts as you'll need the find the balance of speaking tone/volume compared to how close you speak to your iPhone. Also, be sure to record your narration when there is no other background noise.
Then sync your iPhone to your iTunes; your voice memo clip should be stored in Voice Memo playlist within iTunes. Once the voice memo clip is in iTunes, go and import the voice audio narration clip into your iMovie project....presto.

  • Crackling and glitches when recording voice overs in premiere pro cc

    Hi,
I am trying to monitor my voice overs with minimal latency in premiere pro. I know that lowering the buffer size reduces latency, but adds strain to the CPU.
The problem that I encounter is crackling and weird glitch sounds when I drop the buffer size to 256 within the ASIO settings. I find it odd that my CPU can't keep up seeing as how the resource monitor doesn't show 'CPU Usage' higher than 10%.
When I raise the buffer to 512, the crackling and weird sounds disappear, but there is a slight delay present in the headphones.
There are no plug-ins or effects in use.
Would anyone know why this is happening, or if there's anything that can be done?
    Thanks!
    Equipment being used:
    Audio Technica AT-2020 (USB Mic)
    i7 3770k @ 4GHz
    32gb RAM
    NVidia Geforce GTX 670
    Win 7 Pro
    256gb SSD
    2TB HDD

Yes. The procedure I went through was the following.
    1) Add Mono Track (Audio 3)
    2) Click on Mic Icon in Audio 3, in the Audio Mixer.
    3) Click on Record Button. Watch it flash.
    4) Press the space bar to record.

  • Can't record voice-over...

I am trying to record a voice-over and seem to have a harder time than expected... I have done it in the past on the same machine but seem unable to repeat it.
Anyhow, here's how it goes: PP 5.5 on a 2011 iMac. My external lapel mic is dead so I want to use the internal mic. The internal mic seems to work fine (Finder Preferences shows the sound recording levels go in the max region).
When I try to select the audio hardware in PP (Preferences>>Audio Hardware), I am stuck with "System default input/output", even when I choose "built-in mic/built-in output". I can select "Built-in input/Built-in output" but that's not what I am looking for (I think).
Anyhow, back to the Audio mixer, I select my audio track for recording and only have one hardware choice: "Built-in input: Line 1/Built-in output: Line 2"
Of course (?) when I try to record anything with these settings, the recorded track is empty.
    What gives?

    Eureka!
I finally got it (using the built-in mic, which is of course not the best solution).
For those interested, here is how it goes.
First, you have to pause when reading this link: the "Utilities" mentioned there is not a hidden menu somewhere in PP, it is the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder on your Mac, in which there is, indeed, an Audio Midi Setup application. Here is how it looks on my iMac (Lion OS) after I selected the Built-in microphone:
I didn't change any of the default settings.
The point is that once back in PP and after having selected built-in mic in the Preferences>>Audio Hardware pull-down menu, selecting this in the Audio mixer in PP worked out fine.
Note that I discovered this by chance, looking ahead for what I would have to do once I had purchased a USB mic...

  • Recording Voice-Over via Final Cut Pro and Recording Via Pro Tools?

    Hey all,
I'm recording some voice-over for a documentary shot on DV.
Here's my question: all other factors being the same, is there any disadvantage in terms of audio quality of recording into Final Cut (through an m-box2) using the voice-over tool, or recording into M-Powered Pro Tools using the mbox 2 (and then bringing the file to Final Cut)?
Pro Tools obviously allows for a far more sophisticated treatment of the sound after it has been imputed - but in terms of using it for capture?
I know that Pro tools allows 24bit recording, but I'd probably record at 16bit anyway so as to match the sample rate of the rest of my audio in the project.
I'd be using the same mic-xlr-mbox2 set-up and the same computer, does anyone have any views on the difference in the quality of the recorded audio?
    Thanks

actually an in point by itself won't help you
a valid recording range needs both In and Out point, or simply a clip in the timeline which by its presence denotes the recording range
the recording range must be less than 5 minutes
in a blank timeline some like to throw a slug in there to mark the recording range, i find it easiest to just enter a duration in the canvas (i type 4.. in the duration field at top left of the canvas and it automatically marks a 4 minute range)

  • Blackberry 8220 Flip phone gives red light, then shows clock and repeats...... forever....!

Hi I have a blackberry pearl 8220 flip that's bricked. It goes from a long red light to the clock loading screen and continues until by battery is dead.
I have tried reloading the current OS available (v4.6.0.174) through the latest blackberry desktop manager several times, and I did select the options to completely wipe all data on the pearl. I got the desktop manager to detect the phone by taking out the battery at first, and then putting it in. The reload worked properly, everything got wiped off and the os was reinstalled. It worked for a couple of hours, but the problem pops up again. I've even tried reloading an older os (4.5) but it doesn't work either.
    Please help...

Hmmm...OK, then you might need to completely wipe it out first and then reload the OS...see this:

If that fails, then you are probably ready for warranty support -- from your carrier.

  • How to add record voice over for a video file

I have a video file (wmv) already prepared, and all I would like to now do is record a voice over for this file using Soundbooth CS4.  My hunch is that I need to import the video into a multi-track file, and then I expect I'll export the multitrack file back to the WMV when I'm done.  The problem is that when I hit the record button, I'm expecting to see the video playing but I don't.
Is there a way to add a voice-over / narration to an exisiting video file (in this case a video file without an audio track at all)

When you are recording, you are creating a new audio track and not playing the video, so you won't see it advance.
Best bet is to open the video in WMP, and record your audio in SB while it plays, to get the timing right, then open the video in SB and past the recording into it.
I'm not sure, but I believe the reason you can't play the vid and record at the same time is in case someone is recording new audio for a clip that has audio in it already, the old audio would play at the same time the recording is taking place and would screw it all up, so it either records one or plays the other, but not both at once.

  • Recording Voice over a track

I was wondering if I could use the interanl mic to record my voice over a instrumental track located on my computer using garage band? Is this a feature on the updated garage band (ie GarageBand 2 Garage Band 3) Any info would be helpful..

sorry if this is a highjack of the topic but I thought it was relavent......
I have 2 files, one is pre-recorded vocals and the other is an instrumental beat. I am trying to import both files into GB and play them simultaneously. So far I was able to drag both files into GB. They end up being two line on top of one another. The problem is when I press play GB plays the instrumental fine, but at the same time it crosses the vocals is speed them up and sound like a chimpunk. If I delete the instrumental track the vocals play just as they were recorded, no chimpunk effect. How can I fix this so that I both files will play simultaneously and sound like a real track; vocal and instruments?

  • Found white powder in earphone connection and sound doesn't work, red light coming thru hole

I found a white powder accumulating in the earphone port which after cleaning out delicately, the sound on the computer is grayed off and a redlight comes thru the hole...what is happening, please help, thank you

It sounds as if you're 'stuck' in optical output mode. The usual 'fix' for this is to gently clean the port with a toothpick, until the red light goes out.
No idea what the white powder might be - you haven't spilled something around the port, have you?

  • Voice Over won't give me the specifics.

Ever since I got my 3rd gen. shuffle, Voice Over has worked but It won't tell me the song names, artist names, playlist names, etc. It simply refers to all playlists as "playlist 1, playlist 2" until 10 then all playlists from 11 on are called just "playlist." Please help, its a pain not knowing what I'm listening to.
