Recording With An External Microphone.

I have a microphone with a 3.5mm output, can I connect it to my MacBook Pro and record voice tracks? Also, if possible, what softwares are best for the recording process?
I bought my MacBook in August 2010 and the microphone is Azden SMX-10.
Thank you for feedback!
Cheers!

If it fits into the port, you can hold option and try to select the volume slider in the top of the menu bar to switch the headphone port to input.
That answer is incorrect I am afraid, the MacBook Pro does not have a microphone input, it has a line input which is significantly lower in gain than required for a microphone. That is why your microphone is not providing much level.
You should purchase a USB microphone interface, there are many and they are inexpensive.
Here are the MBP specifications:
Connections and expansion
MagSafe power port
Gigabit Ethernet port
FireWire 800 port (up to 800 Mbps)
Two USB 2.0 ports (up to 480 Mbps)
Thunderbolt port (up to 10 Gbps)
Audio line in
Audio line out
SDXC card slot
Kensington lock slot

  • Recording with an external computer mic in Garageband?

    Hi,
I am trying to record an interview for a podcast on location and was trying to use an external computer mic. This isn't a professional mic or anything, just one that goes into your phone jack or line-in. cheap little thing many computers come with. the problem is i can't seem to get the recording to go through the mic. when i use Built-In Line-In nothing records. If i switch to Built-In Microphone, obviously then it works, but is using the internal mic.
Can anyone help me in the appropriate setting to use with an external microphone NOT coming in through an Audiophile or similar set-up (i have used a professional mic as well with an Audiophile, but needed something more portable)
    thank you in advance!

thanks - i tried bulletsandbones and have to admit i'm not sure it helped me. But maybe i'm missing something. I changed the recording options to Built-In Line-In but still nothing was recorded. the second link just says "depends on your processor" so it's not too much help. Basically is there a way for me to record using a line-in Mic WITHOUT it being a Firewall or USB device?

  • How & why Record with an external drive?

Hi. Okay, in another topic I posted it was recommended that I record with an external drive and not the internal drive... I have a 7200rpm firewire 400 lacie drive... so how do record with it? Why and how will this improve my Logic Pro recording experience? I also have a FirePod firewire interface.
    Thanks,
    Bill K.

To record onto an external drive, simply go to the audio menu and choose "Set Audio Record Path..." From here set your recording path to be somewhere on your external drive.
In general, it best to record to a drive other than your system drive. Depending on what you are doing, the system drive can be writing/reading cash files, data files and doing other Logic/OSX related activities in the background, all of which slows down your disk. You of course can still use your system drive to access data, but because its doing other operations, you may not be able to run as many audio tracks at once as you could using a dedicated external drive.
Try both methods and see which works best for you and your system.

  • Can I record with an external mic via my DV camera?

I have a recording setup with a prosumer DV camera with an external mic. I have been using the voiceover tool in FCP to record VO, but now I have Soundtrack Pro and want to use that for recording VO. Can I do this? If so how? Also can someone tell me - does Garageband still have a place fro creating custom scores now that I have ST Pro? Thansk

Your Mac does not have a microphone input, only a line-level input (in fact, no Mac has included a microphone input in quite a while). So you'll need 1) a self-powered microphone that outputs line level, 2) a USB microphone, or 3) an external audio device that supports microphone inputs, either a mixer that will give you line-level output or a USB audio input device. One possibility for a USB device that works for many people and that is relatively inexpensive (ca $40.00 US) the Griffin iMic. It works with any standard personal computer microphone.
    Hope this helps.

  • HD 1080 with an extern microphone?

    Hello –
I’d like to buy the Live! Cam Socialize HD 1080.
But: Is it possible to record the voice with an other Microphone than with the integrated one? Or: When I plug in a special microphone in my notebook, will then the integrated microphone be switched off automatically or can I do that?
    (Sorry for my English)
    Best regards - Marc

Well, sounds like your RAID ARRAY is choking on the media. How fast is it rated for? 250MB/s? 300MB/s? What is the data rate of that captured footage? Seems like it would be MIGHTY HIGH if it is 4:4:4 1080psf.

  • Need help recording with an external mic on garageband!!!

I'm a singer and i'm trying to figure out how to record vocals on garageband with an external mic that can plug into the powerbook. However, when i record it uses the internal mic instead I have no clue how to change it so it will use the external mic. Please help!!!
    Thanks,
    Stef=)

You HAVE to use a Mic that is powered! Just plugging a Mic into the Powerbook and switching the input to Line-in doesn't cause it to work.
I believe Griffin Techologies makes an adapter that will work and there are some other one out there. Google powered mics and see what comes up.

If I am not wrong, you need data from SQL tables in form of
XML. Then you can get that straight from SQL by using FOR XML
clause. FOR XML modes can be of 3 types RAW, AUTO or EXPLICIT. You
can use the mode as per your need.

  • How can I record voice from external microphone and music on ipad

I am a hypnotherapist and I want to record my sessions.  I would like my clients to wear headphones and hear both my background music (playing on my ipad) and my voice THROUGH the headphones as I speak into an external microphone.  I thought that I could play the music and plug in a snowball mic and have both music and voice record, as well as have my voice come through the headphones (so that the client is hearing voice and music directly into their ears).  I am using the ap Voice Recorder.
Here are the two problems:  Using the external mic, I can record my voice, but the music does not record.  Also, when I speak into the microphone, it Voice Record records my voice but you can't hear it through the headphones (although you can hear the music).  Please help!!!

Thanks.  I'll take a look.  Maybe I can use a powered USB hub.  Someone else mentioned this on another forum so that she could record karaoke and hear her voice and the music at the same time.  I think if I plugged the both a usb microphone and a headset into the hub, maybe...just maybe?  I can hear the music through regular earbuds.  I dunno.  Worth a try, though.  What do you think?

  • Recording video with an external microphone

Hi, I have been looking into buying some equipment for location recording and I just wondered if anyone had the answer to a little question that's niggling away at me.
I want to record videos using the Ipod Touch (5th gen) camera but I want to use an external mic rather than the built in mic to record the sound for the video.
I will be using the Apogee Duet plugged into the lightning connection of the Ipod Touch and I just want to know if the Ipod will default to using the Apogee for the sound while I record videos.
If anyone has any experience or just knows a little more about this I would be very grateful for an answer. I just don't want to spend all that money just to discover that I have to record the video and audio seperately.
    Thanks

I thought so but I wasn't sure seeing as how the Apogee connects to the lightning connection rather than the headphone jack like some other audio interfaces. On closer look at some other audio interfaces it seems they tend to connect to the 30pin or lightning connection so it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for your help aqu8!

  • How to record with en external mic instead of built-in in iSight

    Hi,
I just want to record simple videos with the webb cam iSight. I want the audio to sound better and use an external mic during the recording.
After testing I see that iMove uses only the built-in mic, there is no difference if I connect the external mic to the computer with USB or 3,5mm blug mic.
How can change that iMovie would use the external mic instead of built-in?
The audio sounds really bad I want to sound better with the mic. For sure now in iMovie 11 there's an equalizer which makes a difference but I still can't make the sound more "close", it sounds more like eco.
    Any audio tips?

Your built-in iSight is only a camera. It has no mic of its own, so you started with your Mac's built-in mic.
iMovie lets you select among connected mics in the "Voiceover" pane as shown here:
When you click on the "Voiceover" choices bar, you will be able to select among all mics available to your system. (The only reason that this picture shows "iSight" as the "Record from:" mic is that I captured the image while using an external iSight, which does have its own built-in mic.)

    (1) Like you, I use the Logitech USB Desktop mic for my voiceovers. It offers sound good enough for me at a price I can afford.
    (2) Note that other apps that allow you to select various audio sources each have their own way of doing so. For instance, FaceTime changes mics with a FaceTime > Video menu command as shown here:
You can also record A/V in Snow Leopard's QuickTime Player, which lets you select mics in its "Preferences..." as shown here:
    (3) The Help menu of any Mac app that lets you select among various sources may give info on how that particular app lets you select which microphone you use.

  • Can't get sound to play back on Movie Maker when recording with internal webcam/microphone

I have a Windows 8, 64-bit  Envy notebook.   I tried using Google Hangouts but there wasn't any sound (the camera was fine).
Later, I decided to test the  internal microphone myself by  creating a Movie Maker file,  and clicking on Webcam and making a recording.  The camera worked but it played back in total silence.
I checked the settings for the microphone and the internal mic was properly set as the default.  I turned up the volume to the maximum.   Then I found directions for doing a sound check, and I was able to do the Sound Recording check and get audio when I played the file back.
But when I tried again to make a video,  i got zero in the playback.
    Any idea what's going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Pat

    Hello Myerspat,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I have read your post on how you are not able to get sound from your notebook computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To restore the audio to your notebook, I recommend following this document on No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8). This should help with the playback on your system.
In addition, you can also follow @SuperMario1's thread on Troubleshooting Guide: Audio does not Work after a Certain Period of Time. This guide should help with your notebook's audio output in regards to a recent Windows Update.
For more assistance, I will need to know:
The Product and Model Number of your notebook computer.
If your computer has completed all of its important Windows Updates.
If you have updated your HP drivers using the HP Support Assistant.
If this is an on-going, or recent issue.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, as well as the requested information above. I look forward to your reply!

  • Recording with built-in microphone.

I'm recording a conversation (in GarageBand) with the built-in microphone and there is weird static. Any ideas how to fix this?

(The settings while recording don't matter at all, since GB records dry and everything else is added after the fact.)
    True,
but I am more comfortable with the recording, when I hear the dry recording on playback until I am satisfied with the take - then I add the effects.

  • Record with an external camcorder

I have a handycam plugged via USB cable, and I want to use it to record in iMovie, but it doesnt recognize, in the list of cameras, it only shows isight and not my handycam, is there anyway it recognizes it
    it is on recording mode

I believe you may need to connect the camera by firewire to do that.

  • Extreme Problem with Disconnecting External Microphone and Headphone.

I just got my first Toshiba A355D-S6921 6OCT2009 Display. I can not remove External Head or Mic without a High Pitch Squeal since their is no External Volume control. Fixed only by Powering down the laptop. I could not take my external out to add someone elses. Could cause a person to wreck if your kids were using the computer in your car. What can I do to fix this problem?

That knob is indeed a volume-control dial. It's electronic; so it has no stopping point. Apparently, yours is not working.
Pressing Fn + Esc should mute the volume.

  • Recording with Zen V P

I am interested to get a Zen v plus. But I would like to know
    a) Whether its Line-in can record with an external microphone (without an amp)? What's its maximum single (without split) recording-time if it is on 60 Kbps? (say on a Gb zen v version)
    b) Is it true that its voice recording feature can "captures audio in WAV format at only 8 kHz"? Again, what's its maximum recording time if of this format?
    cheers

I tried rercording with an external mic via line-in and it did not pick up anything. An amp is definately needed.
