Recover a stolen Mac book

Good day to all, just last night my Mac book pro was stolen from the trunk of my car. I don't have any tracking apps loaded on it, which leads to my question. Is there any way to track down my MacBook? I do have the find my iPhone app on my phone but never configured the MacBook. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. (Now back to mourn for my MacBook)

Without Cloud to use to locate the Mac, you may be out of luck.

  • HT1366 Any way to retrieve a serial number for my stolen Mac book without the receipt?

Please tell me there is a way to retrieve the serial number on my stolen Mac book I purchased about 5 years ago so I no longer have the receipt

    Hello Jrose33,
Sorry to hear about your MacBook.  I found a couple of resources that might help with locating the serial number for your MacBook.
If you registered yoru MacBook when you purchased it, you can view the serial number in the Support Profile of the Apple ID you registered it to:
Although Apple does not have a process to track or flag lost or stolen product, you can use My Support Profile to find a list of serial numbers that have been purchased or registered with your Apple ID.
    Go to My Support Profile*.
Sign in with your Apple ID.
View your purchases in "My Products".
You can find the full article here:

If you never registered your MacBook with your Apple ID, you can also find the serial number on the packaging:

  • Can I track my stolen mac book pro if I did not have an i cloud account activated on it before stolen.

Can I track my stolen mac book pro if I did not have an i cloud account activated on it before stolen.?

You needed to have Find my Phone set up and activated/on (which is in iCloud).
PS: Since your profile shows you're running iOS - which iDevice do you have? Iphone, iPad, or ? Do you have it set up there? (iOS is the OS for iDevices; your MBP would be on Mac OS).

  • How to find a stolen mac book pro

i recently had a mac book pro stolen from me, it was locked and on. i have no serial number for it, and i was wandering if there is any way to track it?
    Please help.

Just about all of the easy methods of tracking a stolen Mac depend on you setting them up before it gets stolen. After it gets stolen, it is still possible, but for you to have any chance you would have to be a rather advanced network engineer who remembers a few key network attributes about your laptop and left some back doors open before the theft. And even then, it's a lot harder than if you had turned on anti-theft features before, not after, the theft.

  • Stolen mac book air

    Hi
I have just had my mac book air stolen and I have all the settings on to find my mac I have down loaded the app on my phone and shows my MacBook on there but cannot locate it I have turned on the email when located setting and was just wondering when the MacBook is turned on they won't be able to enter my login but could log into the visitor one and if they do and connect to wifi or the Internet would my iPhone with the find iphone app installed be able to locate it and show me where the stolen mac is? or email me the position of it?

Find My Mac can be used to email you once a location is acquired. Once you have a location, then you may want to consider the wipe. But know that a wipe may also be a tip-off to the thief.
What it comes down to really is the knowledge that a thief has in Mac security, and your ability to approximate that knowledge that will dictate your course of action here. Your options are:
    1) WIpe now, or later.
    2) Send a message, if you dare. (usually done if you just think it was an innocent "lost and found" case)
    3) Continually check for location (very unlikely to work unless you have lots of time)
    4) Have Find My Mac send a location when available, by email.
    5) Contact the authorities (always, and right now)
    Good Luck
p.s. Templeton is right. Without punctuation, we're just guessing at what you are asking.

  • Is there any way to recover a stolen Mac with iCloud?

About less than three weeks ago, my bookbag was stolen and inside was my MacBook Pro. I have an iCloud account and OS X v10.7.3 Lion is installed on the computer. So far, the computer or bookbag has failed to show up and I have already filed a police report, but since it was stolen from a hallway on campus at my college, there's no insurance to replace the computer that was stolen along with the bookbag. I have been keeping a close eye with the computer to see if it will show up on Find My Mac, but so far it has been shown offline. I went ahead and sent a remote lock and remote wipe once the computer is connected to the Internet to see if I can locate it.
I do remember someone telling me something about the remote lock feature and how it's hard to circumvent the feature, like if the person who stole the computer thought all you would need to do is replace the hard drive, but I was told that even replacing the hard drive would not work, because a remote lock is within the firmware or motherboard (logic board). Is this true?
So how would I be able to recover this computer? Also, are there any used, refurbished MacBook, MacBook Pro computers to get to replace this computer if it doesn't show up or isn't recoverable?
I was thinking about replacing this computer with an inexpensive Ubuntu PC laptop....
I did see a refurbished MacBook unibody white (last model) selling on Amazon for $749.

Used Macs of every description are always available on Ebay and Craigslist and from a plethora of online used-Mac resellers. Apple sells refurbished late-model Macs at 10-20% discounts with a new-computer warranty and the opportunity to extend the warranty with AppleCare.

  • How can I inform apple about my stolen Mac Book Pro?

I want to inform apple about my stolen Macbook Pro so that if they try to register it we can trace the computer. But apparently there is no reporting system. Is there another solution, an adress to  write an e-mail?

... well you answered your own queston. there is no reporting system..Apple doesn't track stolen equipment.. perhaps you bought Lojackforlaptops or turned on Find my Mac.. if you are at a college, you might want to ask your IT department if they can look for your IT via Mac's "MAC" address if you know it.

  • Is it safe to buy a stolen Mac book Pro or Air?

    Hey!
Someone is selling a Macbook Pro on a cheaper price and it is a used one. I dont knw if its a stolen laptop or the guy is in need of money thats y he is selling the macbook on a cheeper price. I just wana know if i can get in trouble if the laptop is a stolen one? If the laptop was a stolen laptop and i buy it, is it possible that the owner or Apple Inc can track me and i can get in trouble. Help would be really appreciated.
    Thanks

If the (original) owner had set up find my Mac and it was stolen, yes, he (and the cops) can find your location.
If that was not set up, you won't be able to do much with it because anything you want to download/upgrade/install will need the original Apple ID associated with it. You may not even be able to log in unless you have the administrator password.
If the seller is legit, then he would be wiping the drive and reinstalling the original OS which is then not associated with his Apple ID - that would be the only way to do it. Those are the questions I'd bring up with him and test: is it the original OS, can I log in, and can I get to the app store and update/upgrade using my own Apple ID.

  • Stolen mac book

My Mac IBOOK 12, was stolen from a hertz rent a car in Marseille France on Saturday 14 oct. I am worried because it contains my @mac, mail.
I can't find a way in this maze to contact Apple.
Should I do anything?, I'd hate to think Apple qould give help with finding my password.
    What can I do?
mac osx   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You may want to submit your MacBook to this stolen computer database. If you don't have your serial number, get it from Apple. Also, tell them it was stolen.

  • Stolen Mac Book Pro

Dose the FIND utility help to locate my stolen MacBook Pro?
What can I do to locate my laptop?
Does the laptop have to be on?

If you have icloud enabled in your computer with find my mac checked off you can log in to iCloud.com.
It will give you a general location on where your Macbook is - it won't give you an address but a close enough location...
Yes, your laptop has to be turned on in order for you to be able to get the general location/vicinity of where your Macbook is...See image below.
Good luck - I hope you find your Macbook.

  • Stolen Mac Book Pro - what to do

Stolen last week. They have logged on and changed the user name. I haven't remotely wiped or locked it yet, because I want to be able to track it. Can they disable the tracking? Should I simply remotely lock it or wipe it? Can I still track it? What can I do to make using it very miserable for them?

Notify the police that it was stolen.
Change all your passwords to things you accessed online such as email and bank accounts. They logged on and changed the username on what, the computer, your email, your bank account?
There is nothing you can do to find and retrieve the computer.
